How to remove your card from Perplexity without a second bill

Quick answer

Open Perplexity settings, find Subscription, and click Manage Plan to reach the billing page, where Billing and Shipping Information holds your card. Never change Perplexity payment details inside the App Store or Google Play: its help centre says doing so creates a second subscription and charges you again.

First work out whether Perplexity has your card at all

Perplexity sells the same Pro plan through four checkouts, and only one of them puts your card anywhere Perplexity can reach.

Where you subscribedWho holds the cardWhere you change or remove it
perplexity.ai on the webPerplexity, through its payment processorAccount, Subscription, Manage Plan, Billing and Shipping Information
The iPhone or iPad appAppleiOS Settings, your name, Payment & Shipping
The Android appGoogleGoogle Play, Payments and subscriptions, Payment methods
Samsung Galaxy StoreSamsungGalaxy Store, Menu, My page, where Samsung documents cancel and refund rather than the card

The web checkout is the only route where Perplexity itself has the details, and its help centre lists what it accepts there: credit and debit cards, Cash App, Google Pay and Apple Pay, and ACH transfer.

Check a receipt before doing anything else. The wrong door here is not a wasted click, it is an extra bill, for the reason in the next section.

The warning Perplexity prints in bold, and what it costs to ignore

Perplexity's Billing FAQ carries a sentence that no other AI provider bothers to write down: "Do not attempt to update your Perplexity payment information through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Doing so will create a new, separate subscription and you will be charged. Always update your payment method via the Perplexity website."

Read what that describes. A person with a web subscription and an expiring card opens the Perplexity app, taps through what looks like a payment update, and ends the day paying twice: once to Perplexity, once to the store, for the same plan. Neither charge is a mistake either company will spot.

The rule that avoids it is one line: change the card where the money was first taken. If Perplexity billed you, use the Perplexity website. If Apple billed you, use Apple. Never cross the two.

If a double charge already happened, the store side is the one to unwind, and the refund routes are in the last section.

Removing the card on the web, and the verb that is missing

  1. Go to perplexity.ai and sign in with the account being charged.
  2. Click your profile icon and choose Account, or go straight to the settings page.
  3. Under Subscription, click Manage Plan, sometimes labelled Manage Subscription.
  4. Scroll to Billing and Shipping Information.
  5. Add payment method. Perplexity documents adding and updating a card here, and says an update applies to future invoices only.

Notice the verb on that last step. Perplexity documents adding and updating a payment method. It does not document deleting one, which puts it in the same position as Claude: the practical way to get a card out of the account is to replace it, and the practical way to make sure nothing is charged is to cancel.

To cancel, stay on the same page and choose Cancel Subscription. Perplexity documents reactivating from the same screen, with Renew plan or Update plan, so the cancellation is reversible from where you made it. Our how to cancel Perplexity Pro guide covers what the free tier keeps and what it loses.

Two smaller facts from the same FAQ, both of which surprise people. Perplexity does not offer subscription pausing at all. Its Billing FAQ says it in four words: "subscription pausing isn't available." And an invoice that has already been issued cannot be changed, so a card update applies to future invoices only.

Delete the account and the subscription keeps billing

This is the most expensive misunderstanding on the page, and Perplexity answers it in one line in its cancellation article: "No, deleting your account will not terminate your subscription. Please ensure you cancel your subscription before deleting your account."

The account settings screen makes it easy to get the order wrong. The Delete account row carries a button labelled Learn more, which does not open an article. It opens a confirmation dialog headed Confirm Account Deletion, listing what goes: profile details, preferences and settings, search history, sessions and shared content, all permanently deleted within 30 days, with a note that a limited set of data may be retained where the law requires it.

So the safe order is fixed. Cancel the subscription. Confirm the cancellation. Then delete the account. Reverse those and you own a charge with no console to stop it from, and the fix becomes a support ticket for an account that no longer exists.

The same logic applies to a store subscription, only harder: deleting the Perplexity account does nothing at all to an Apple or Google subscription, because that billing never touched Perplexity.

The trial card requirement, and the seven day timer on it

A large share of people searching for this are not subscribers. They took a partner promotion or a free year of Pro, and discovered a card was required anyway.

Perplexity's Billing FAQ is specific on one point: a valid credit or debit card is required for every promotional and trial redemption.

And the part with a clock on it: existing users who get a payment method prompt have 7 days from the original notification to add a card. Miss it and the account drops to the free version. Add a valid card later and the promotional access comes back, but the missed days are gone: "any missed days will not be added back to your trial period."

If you are on a promotional year and want out cleanly, cancel before the trial ends rather than removing the card, because removing it stops nothing and only trades a charge for a downgrade you did not choose.

Refunds, and how little time you get

Perplexity publishes its refund windows, and they are shorter than most people assume:

  • European Union, United Kingdom and Turkey: a refund if you cancel within 14 days of purchase, monthly or annual. State in the request that this is where you are.
  • South Korea and Brazil: 7 days, monthly or annual.
  • Everywhere else, monthly plans: up to 24 hours after the purchase date.
  • Everywhere else, annual plans: a full refund within 72 hours of the original purchase date and time, with "no exceptions for requests after this period."

On the web the request rides on the cancellation: perplexity.ai/pro, then Manage Subscription, then Cancel Plan, and the refund option appears with the cancellation confirmation. Apple purchases go to reportaproblem.apple.com. Google Play purchases are handled by Perplexity over email with your Play email or GPA number. Galaxy Store purchases carry a Refund option in Purchase history for roughly 48 hours.

Two more limits worth knowing before you write in. Perplexity says it cannot process a second refund request after a first has been granted, and an account terminated for a Terms of Use violation gets nothing back. Our refunds guide has the same table for every other provider.

If you are removing the card because the plan stopped earning it

Perplexity Pro is a search product that added a model picker. Most people who cancel it are not leaving AI, they are consolidating.

Add the real total first with the AI subscription savings calculator, then read Perplexity vs ChatGPT if you are choosing between the two rather than dropping both.

Whizi vs Perplexity Pro is the direct comparison and Whizi pricing carries the numbers: Pro is $19.99 a month billed yearly, $239.88 for the year, with GPT, Claude Sonnet, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek in one workspace and one card on file. The honest loss: Perplexity's cited answer format and its research surface are its own, and a general chat workspace does not reproduce them. If citations are the reason you pay, keep paying.

Workflow checklist
  • Read a receipt first and name who is actually billing you
  • Change the card only where the money was taken, never in the other place
  • Add the replacement card before expecting the old one to go
  • Cancel the subscription before deleting the account, never the other way round
  • Check the refund window for your country before it closes
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove my card from Perplexity?

Open Account, then Subscription, then Manage Plan, and use Billing and Shipping Information to add a replacement card. Perplexity documents adding and updating a payment method rather than deleting one, so the reliable way to stop a card being charged is to cancel the subscription.

Why did updating my card in the app charge me twice?

Because it started a second subscription. Perplexity warns that updating payment information through the App Store or Google Play creates a new, separate subscription and charges you. Always change the card on the Perplexity website if Perplexity is the one billing you.

Does deleting my Perplexity account cancel my subscription?

No. Perplexity states that deleting your account does not terminate your subscription, and asks you to cancel first. The Delete account button is labelled Learn more but opens a confirmation dialog, so it is easy to get the order wrong.

Can I pause Perplexity Pro instead of cancelling?

No. Perplexity says subscription pausing is not available. To stop paying you cancel from Manage Plan, and Perplexity documents reactivating later from the same screen with Renew plan or Update plan.

Do I need a card for a free Perplexity Pro trial?

Yes. A valid credit or debit card is required for every promotional and trial redemption. Existing users prompted for one have 7 days to add it, after which the account is downgraded to free until a card is added.

How long do I have to ask for a refund?

Fourteen days in the EU, UK and Turkey, seven days in South Korea and Brazil, and elsewhere 24 hours on a monthly plan or 72 hours on an annual one. Perplexity states there are no exceptions after the annual window closes.
