Claude Max vs Google AI Ultra: the same limits at the same price, so pick code or video

In brief

Claude Max is the better buy for coding and long documents, and Google AI Ultra is the better buy for video, storage and Google apps. As of October 2026 both sell $100 and $200 tiers at 5x and 20x their $20 plans, with the same five hour and weekly limits. Claude Opus scores 58 to Gemini 4 Argon's 53.

Claude Max and Google AI Ultra cost the same and meter usage the same way

Anthropic sells Claude Max at $100 for 5x the usage of Claude Pro and $200 for 20x. Google sells AI Ultra at $99.99 for 5x the usage of AI Pro and $199.99 for 20x. We read both vendors' own plan and help pages on 25 October 2026 and built the table from them.

The usage rows match almost word for word. Anthropic's help center says Max 20x "includes 20 times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance", that the session limit "will reset every five hours", and that Max also has "a weekly usage limit that applies across all models." Google's limits page says your limit "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit", and its plans page sells Ultra at "5x higher usage limits vs. AI Pro" or "20x higher usage limits vs. AI Pro".

So each 20x tier costs about $10 per allowance of its $20 sibling. That's true on both sides. Neither vendor prints a message count for any tier, either. The meter can't decide this purchase. What comes in the box can.

Claude Max has the higher scoring model, and so does the $20 Claude Pro

Claude Opus is the top model on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.3.2, at 58 points, when we read it on 25 October 2026. The best model in Google AI Ultra is Gemini 4 Argon, at 53. Claude Sonnet scores 56, so even Anthropic's middle model beats Google's best one.

Neither top model needs the top tier. Anthropic's pricing page lists Opus on Claude Pro. Google's US plans page says "Includes Gemini 4 Argon" on AI Pro as well as Ultra, and gives Ultra "Highest access" to it. So the $100 to $200 mostly buys volume. On Claude, it also buys Fable, which Pro can only reach through paid usage credits.

Argon is cheaper to run, at least through the API. Artificial Analysis lists Argon at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output, and Opus at $4 and $20. Opus is the faster of the two, at 96 output tokens a second against Argon's 81. You don't pay per token on either plan, though, so the price only matters if you also build on the API.

Is Claude Max or Google AI Ultra better for coding?

Claude Max is the better coding plan for most developers. Opus scores five points higher, and Claude Code comes with every Max tier. Anthropic's Max help article lists "Access to Claude Code" for "terminal-based coding workflows with one unified subscription." Max also adds $100 or $200 a month of Claude API credit, which nothing in Ultra matches.

There's one catch on Claude. Anthropic's Claude Code article says the limits "are shared across Claude and Claude Code, meaning all activity in both tools counts against the same limits." So a long agent run in the terminal eats the allowance you'd use in the app. On Ultra, coding sits in separate tools. Google lists "Highest rate limits to agent model in Google Antigravity" on Ultra 20x and the "Highest limits" for Jules, its coding agent that works in the background.

Buy Ultra for coding if you already live in Antigravity or Android Studio. Buy Max if you work in a terminal or an editor that runs Claude. Both hold 1M tokens of context, so a whole repository fits either way. Claude Pro vs Claude Max covers when the $20 plan stops being enough.

Which has the higher usage limits, Claude Max 20x or Google AI Ultra 20x?

Neither has a higher limit on paper. Each 20x tier is sold as 20 times its own $20 plan, and neither vendor publishes how many messages that $20 plan holds. Anthropic says the number "will vary based on message length, including the length of files you attach". Google says its limits "factor in the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat."

They differ in what happens at the wall. On Ultra, Google's limits page says "you can continue your conversation with Flash-Lite", which is a smaller model, until your limit refreshes. On Max, you wait for the five hour session to roll over or for the weekly reset, which Anthropic fixes to one day and time for your account. You'll see that reset time in Settings, Usage.

Video and research cost more on Google. Its limits page warns that "Some features (like media generation or Deep Research) will consume more of your usage." Claude has no video to spend it on. Its Research mode runs on every Max tier. Claude usage limit reached explains each of Claude's limit messages.

Images are the cleanest split. Anthropic's help center says "Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do." It builds diagrams and charts in HTML and SVG instead. Google puts Nano Banana in the Gemini app and in Search, and Veo 3.1 video in Flow.

The bundle is the other split. Ultra comes with storage "starting at 20 TB", a YouTube Premium individual plan in over 40 countries, and Google Home Premium. If you'd pay for those anyway, Ultra costs you less than its price. Max puts that value into API credit. Is Google AI Ultra worth it works out what the video credits buy clip by clip.

Who should buy neither plan?

You don't need either one if you haven't hit the wall on a $20 plan. Claude Pro at $20 has Claude Opus and Claude Code. Google AI Pro at $19.99 has Gemini 4 Argon and the same 1M tokens of context as Ultra. Most people who compare the two big plans would get the top model from either lab for about $20.

You also don't need either if you want Claude and Gemini on one bill. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month as of October 2026, with Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and Gemini Pro side by side in one chat. Powerhouse is $49.99 for 10,000 credits and adds Claude Fable and the full 280+ catalog. Credits per message vary by model and can change. Whizi loses on every heavy row above. It has no Claude Code, no Veo and no storage, and each message caps input at 40,000 tokens, where both vendors take 1M.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Google AI Ultra cheaper than Claude Max?

Yes, by one cent at each tier. Google AI Ultra is $99.99 and $199.99 a month in the US, and Claude Max is $100 and $200, as of October 2026. Both sell 5x and 20x their $20 plan. Ultra also includes storage from 20 TB and YouTube Premium, which Max doesn't. Is Google AI Ultra worth it prices the bundle line by line.

Should I get Claude Max 5x or Google AI Ultra at $99.99?

Get Claude Max 5x if you write code or work with long documents, and get Ultra if you make video or want Google storage. Both are 5x their $20 plan as of October 2026. If you haven't hit a limit on the $20 tier yet, start there. Is Claude Pro worth it covers what the $20 plan holds.

How do Claude Max, Google AI Ultra and ChatGPT Pro compare?

All three sell a tier near $100 and one near $200 as of October 2026, and only OpenAI sells one at $500. Claude Max and Ultra both sell 5x and 20x their $20 plan. Claude Max adds Claude Code, Ultra adds Veo and storage, and ChatGPT Pro adds Codex and unlimited images. Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro covers the OpenAI side.

Can I switch from Claude Max back to Claude Pro?

Yes. Anthropic's Max help article sells the tiers "with the flexibility to adjust as your needs change", and Claude Max is billed monthly only, so you're never locked into a year of it. Moving from Max 20x to Max 5x works the same way. How to downgrade Claude Max walks through the steps and what you keep.
