How to downgrade Claude Max to Pro or Max 5x (it waits for renewal)

In brief

Downgrade Claude Max from Settings, Billing: Anthropic's pricing FAQ says to choose Manage subscription there and switch to Max 5x or Pro. Per the same FAQ, downgrades take effect at the end of the current billing period, so Max runs to renewal and nothing is refunded. If Apple or Google bills you, change the plan in that store.

Where is the downgrade option in Claude's billing settings?

It's under Settings, Billing on claude.ai or Claude Desktop. Anthropic's pricing FAQ, read on 11 October 2026, answers "How do I upgrade, downgrade, or switch between plans?" with one instruction: go to Settings, Billing and choose Manage subscription. On a Max 20x account we checked on 1 September 2026, the plan card read "Max plan" and "20x more usage than Pro", with one link labelled Adjust plan pointing to Claude's upgrade page. We didn't open the plan picker behind it. The card had no button that says Downgrade.

Anthropic publishes help articles for signing up to Max and for cancelling it, and neither one covers moving down a tier. The pricing FAQ is the only Anthropic page that does. If the billing screen only offers higher tiers on your account, cancel instead and subscribe to Pro once Max lapses. You'll still get Max until the end date. The catch is the gap: between the lapse and the new sign up you're on the free plan, and your billing date moves to the day you resubscribe.

A Team seat works differently. If your Claude comes through a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner changes the seat under Organization settings, Billing, and there's no personal plan for you to adjust.

When does a Claude Max downgrade take effect?

A Max downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period you've already paid for. Anthropic's pricing FAQ puts the whole policy in one sentence: "Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing period, and your chats, projects, and files stay with your account whichever plan you're on."

Upgrades run the other way. Anthropic's Max sign up article says a Pro user who moves up is "upgraded to Max immediately, with billing adjusted on a prorated basis for the remainder of your current billing cycle." So the two directions aren't symmetric, and that helps you twice.

First, scheduling early costs nothing. Max runs to its renewal date whether you change the plan today or on the last evening. Second, the downgrade is quick to undo. If Pro turns out too tight in week one, moving back to Max starts the same day. It isn't cheap, though: Anthropic's invoices article says the upgrade charges a full month of Max, less the unused value left on Pro, and resets your billing date.

One timing habit is worth borrowing from cancellations. Anthropic asks subscribers to cancel "at least 24 hours before your next billing date" and publishes no matching rule for a downgrade. Make the change a full day before renewal and the question never comes up. Max is sold monthly only, per Anthropic's Max plan article, so there's no annual term to unwind.

What do you lose when Claude Max drops to Pro?

You lose usage, not models. Anthropic's Max plan article defines Max 5x as "five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance" and Max 20x as 20 times, and both Max and Pro add a weekly limit on top of the five hour session. Claude Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are on every paid plan in Anthropic's comparison table. The rows that change are below.

What stays: every chat, project and file, plus Claude Code, Research, memory, Projects and Claude in Chrome, all listed on Pro in Anthropic's table. Max 20x to Max 5x keeps Fable and priority access. It's the cheaper step down if Fable is part of your week.

Before you choose, open Settings, Usage. It shows how much of the session and weekly limits you've used and when the weekly limit resets. Our Claude Pro vs Claude Max breakdown covers who actually needs the multiplier, and what to do when the Claude usage limit is reached covers life on the lower cap.

What happens to Claude Code and your API credits after a downgrade?

Claude Code keeps working on Pro, with a smaller allowance. Anthropic's Claude Code article says the five hour session limit and the weekly limit are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so a terminal session and a chat tab drain one pool. On Pro that pool is a twentieth of Max 20x, and long agent runs feel it first. The same article tells you to watch what's left with the /status command.

The monthly API credits are the part people forget. Max 5x includes $100 a month and Max 20x $200 for building on the Claude Platform, and Anthropic's API credits article says Pro gets none. When you downgrade, new credits stop and the ones already in your Console organization stay usable until they expire. They don't roll over: they expire at the end of each billing cycle. So spend them before renewal or let them go.

Those API credits never covered Claude Code itself. Anthropic says they don't pay for interactive Claude Code sessions or for extra usage past your plan's limits.

Two billing traps sit next to the terminal. If you turn on usage credits to get past Pro's lower ceiling, Claude Code keeps going at standard API rates, billed apart from the plan, and you can switch them off any time under Settings, Usage. And if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set on your machine, Anthropic says Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, so the downgrade saves nothing on that machine until you unset it.

Does Anthropic refund or prorate a Max downgrade?

No. A downgrade keeps Max to the end of the paid month and starts the lower price at renewal, so there's no unused balance to send back. Anthropic's refund article only covers payments its Terms of Service define as refundable.

Proration exists on the way up. Anthropic's invoices article says a mid cycle upgrade charges "one full billing cycle of the new plan, less a prorated amount for value remaining in your old plan." When that leftover value is bigger than the new plan's month, the excess sits on the account as credit for future invoices. It isn't paid back to your card.

The real refund routes are narrow. In the EEA and the UK you may get a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated by use, and the option may appear in Settings. Apple alone refunds App Store charges, through reportaproblem.apple.com. For an active Google Play subscription, Anthropic's support team checks eligibility first. The full fork is in how to get a refund for Claude Pro, which applies to Max as well.

How do you downgrade a Claude Max plan bought on iPhone or Android?

You change it in the store that bills you, because claude.ai can't touch an Apple or Google subscription. Inside the app, Anthropic's path is your initials in the top right, then Billing, then Manage subscription, which hands you to the store.

iPhone or iPad. Open iOS Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, then Claude, and pick the lower plan if the screen lists it. Apple's developer rules describe what follows: "The subscription continues until the next renewal date, then is renewed at the lower level and price." That matches Anthropic's web policy.

The App Store is where staying on Max costs most. Apple's US listing for Claude, read on 11 October 2026, prices Max 20x at $249.99 and Max 5x at $124.99, against $200 and $100 on the web, while Pro is $20.00 in both places. An iPhone subscriber who drops Max 20x to Pro saves $229.99 a month. One who wants to keep Max can save $49.99 a month by cancelling in the App Store, letting it lapse, and subscribing on claude.ai.

Android. Anthropic documents Google Play upgrades only: you're charged the full new price and the unused value becomes extra days. For any plan switch, Google says the app developer decides, and that "you may have to pay the full price or the price difference of the new plan." If the Claude app's Manage subscription screen offers no lower tier, cancel in the Play Store and resubscribe to Pro after Max ends. How to cancel Claude Pro has the Play Store taps.

Max 5x, Pro or something else: which step down fits?

Pick Max 5x if you'd still outgrow Pro most days or use Fable weekly. It halves the bill and keeps Fable, priority access and $100 of API credits. Pick Pro if Claude Code isn't open every working day. Cancel to free if you've stopped paying attention to the plan at all.

Some people leave Max because they want Claude Opus a few times a day, not Claude Code all day. For that shape, Whizi Pro at $29.99 a month carries Claude Opus next to Claude Sonnet and ChatGPT Sol. The honest loss: no Claude Code and nothing near a Max session allowance. A developer who lives in the terminal should take Anthropic's Pro instead.

Workflow checklist
  • Check the receipt to see whether Anthropic, Apple or Google bills you
  • Open Settings, Usage and read how much of the session and weekly limits you use
  • Change the plan in Settings, Billing at least a day before renewal
  • Spend any monthly API credits before the renewal date
  • Unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY if you want Claude Code on the Pro allowance
  • Change an App Store or Play Store subscription in the store, not on claude.ai
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I downgrade Claude Max to Pro?

Yes. Anthropic's pricing FAQ says to go to Settings, Billing on claude.ai and choose Manage subscription to downgrade or switch plans. The change takes effect at the end of the current billing period, so you keep Max until renewal, then pay $20 a month. Nothing from the Max month is refunded.

Can I downgrade from Claude Max 20x to Max 5x?

Yes, through the same Settings, Billing route in Anthropic's pricing FAQ. The bill drops from $200 to $100 a month at the next renewal, the session allowance falls from 20x Pro to 5x Pro, and the monthly API credits fall from $200 to $100. Fable and priority access stay.

Do I lose my chats or projects if I downgrade Claude Max?

No. Anthropic's pricing FAQ says your chats, projects and files stay with your account whichever plan you're on. A downgrade changes the usage allowance, Fable access and the API credits, not your history.

Can I still use Claude Fable after dropping to Pro?

Only on usage credits. Anthropic's plan table lists Fable on Pro as usage credits, billed at standard API rates, and the pricing page lists Fable 5.1 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens as of October 2026. Max 5x keeps Fable at 50% of the weekly limits.
