What $80 more buys: a multiplier on the same models
Anthropic's pricing page, read on 22 September 2026, describes Max as "Everything in Pro, plus: Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro". It adds "Higher output limits for all tasks", "Early access to advanced Claude features" and "Priority access at high traffic times". Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month at $200 billed up front, and gives "at least 5x more" usage than free per five hour session. Max starts "From $100" for the 5x tier; the 20x tier is $200, the plan TechCrunch reported at launch on 9 April 2025.
Read that list twice. What's missing from it decides most purchases: no model appears in it. Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are on both plans. The one model row that changes is Fable: Pro reaches it only by buying usage credits, and Max includes it at 50% of the weekly limit. What you buy with the extra $80 or $180 is room: more turns per session, more sessions per week, longer outputs, and a shorter queue when Anthropic is busy.
| Claude Pro | Claude Max 5x | Claude Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $20, or $17 billed annually | $100 | $200 |
| Usage per 5 hour session | At least 5x free | 5x Pro | 20x Pro |
| Models | Opus, Sonnet, Haiku; Fable with usage credits | Same, Fable at 50% of weekly limits | Same, Fable at 50% of weekly limits |
| Claude Code | Included at limited usage | Included, 5x | Included, 20x |
| Output limits | Standard | Higher | Higher |
| Priority at high traffic | No | Yes | Yes |
Anthropic's Team plan sells the same multiplier as a seat type: a standard seat is $20 a month annual and a premium seat with 5x usage is $100, the same 5x for the same price as Max 5x.
The limit that pushes people to Max is tokens in one thread, not messages
Claude limits usage two ways: a rolling cap that resets every five hours and a weekly ceiling aimed at all day agent use. Both count tokens rather than messages, which is why two people sending the same number of messages have opposite experiences. Is Claude Pro worth it walks through the mechanism. A 100 page document discussed over thirty turns is re-read on every turn. That single habit drains a Pro session faster than a day of short questions.
That gives you a test before you pay. If your Pro sessions end in the limit message, look at the conversations that end them. Are they long threads with big documents or pasted code? Then try three habit changes for a week first: start a new conversation when the topic changes, attach the document to a Project once instead of pasting it, and write a handoff summary when a thread gets long. People who work that way rarely hit the cap on Pro.
If you already work that way and still hit the limit, you're a Max customer. The usual profile is a developer running Claude Code for hours, an analyst processing long documents all day, or anyone running agents that make dozens of model calls per task. For that person 5x is the honest starting point, and 20x is for the people who hit 5x too.
Who should pay for Max, and who is buying headroom they will not use
| You are | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Running Claude Code most of the working day | Max 5x, then 20x if you hit it | Agent loops are exactly the token pattern the Pro cap is built to stop |
| Processing long documents all day, every day | Max 5x | The document is re-read every turn, so the session drains in tokens |
| A writer, editor or consultant working in sessions | Pro | The habit fixes above keep you clear of the cap |
| Hitting Pro limits with one giant thread open all day | Fix the habit first | Most of these users never needed Max |
| Wanting a model Pro does not have | Neither, unless it is Fable | Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are on both; only Fable moves from usage credits to the plan |
| Wanting Claude next to GPT and Gemini | Neither | Max is deeper Claude, not wider AI |
The last two rows are the ones this comparison exists for. A surprising share of Max purchases are driven by the feeling that $100 must be the serious plan. Anthropic's own list says it is the roomier one. If the problem is which model answers, the multiplier won't fix it, Fable aside.
One external marker of who Max is for: OpenAI launched its own $100 ChatGPT Pro tier on 9 April 2026 at roughly five times Plus usage, and TheNextWeb framed it as a direct answer to Max at the same price. Both vendors price the same thing the same way: heavy agent use, five times over, for $100.
The alternative Anthropic does not sell: Opus priced per message
Between $20 and $100 Anthropic sells nothing. People often look at Max because they want Opus for specific hard tasks without a session clock, and never needed 5x Pro. That's a different product, and it exists.
Whizi charges a fixed number of credits per message on each model, from a monthly allowance, with nothing counted by the hour. Its Powerhouse plan is $49.99 a month or $34.99 billed yearly for 8,000 credits, and Claude Opus 5 costs 20 credits a message on it, Claude Fable 5.1 costs 100, and Claude Sonnet 5 costs 10. Pro at $29.99, or $19.99 yearly, carries Sonnet at 10 credits with a 2,000 credit allowance and no Opus. The same plans carry GPT-5.6 Sol, Gemini, Grok, Kimi and DeepSeek, which is the other half of the reason someone at the $20 to $100 gap looks here.
The losses are specific and they matter to exactly the people Max is built for. Claude Code is Anthropic's and stays there. Whizi has no terminal agent. Artifacts and Anthropic's connectors stay with Anthropic, and Whizi's own Projects are a different implementation that runs across every model. And a Whizi message caps input at 40,000 tokens per turn, so the whole book in one message workflow doesn't transfer. Whizi vs Claude Pro puts the two columns side by side, and the cheapest way to use Claude and GPT together covers the API route for developers who want Opus by the token.
A decision rule you can run this week
Count the limit messages on Pro for seven working days, and note what each conversation that hit one contained. Three or more hits from threads you had already split sensibly is a Max signal. Three or more hits from one giant thread is a habit signal. Zero hits and a wish for a different model is a signal to look outside Anthropic's ladder entirely.
Max 5x is worth $100 a month to someone who would otherwise lose hours a week to the cap. To everyone else it's $80 a month of unused room, and Anthropic is honest enough to say so on its own pricing page.
- Read Anthropic's Max feature list and confirm it names no model Pro lacks
- Count Pro limit messages for a week and note what each conversation contained
- Fix the three token habits before paying for a multiplier
- Buy Max 5x only if Claude Code or all day document work still hits the cap
- Price Opus per message elsewhere if the goal is the model rather than the room
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Claude Pro and Claude Max?
Usage, not models. Anthropic lists Max as everything in Pro plus 5x or 20x more usage per five hour session, higher output limits, early access to new features and priority at high traffic times. Pro is $20 a month or $17 billed annually; Max is $100 for 5x and $200 for 20x. Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are on both; Fable is on Pro through usage credits and on Max at 50% of the weekly limit.
Is Claude Max worth it over Pro?
Only if you hit Pro's five hour session cap or weekly ceiling in normal, well organised use, which mostly means running Claude Code or agents for hours a day or processing long documents all day. If your limit hits come from one long thread with a big document in it, changing that habit is cheaper than $80 a month.
Should I get Max 5x or Max 20x?
Start at 5x. It's $100 against $200 and covers most people who outgrow Pro. 20x is for those who hit the 5x allowance too, typically with several agents running through the day. Anthropic prices its Team premium seat at the same $100 for the same 5x, which is a useful sanity check on what the tier is for.
Does Claude Max include better models than Pro?
Not one Pro cannot reach. Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are on both, and Fable is the one row that changes, from usage credits on Pro to 50% of the weekly limit on Max. Max buys room: more usage per session, higher output limits and priority access. If you want a model rather than more of the same one, the multiplier doesn't help.
Is there anything between $20 and $100 for Claude?
Not from Anthropic. Whizi's Powerhouse plan costs $49.99 a month or $34.99 billed yearly. It prices Claude Opus 5 at 20 credits a message and Claude Fable 5.1 at 100 from an 8,000 credit monthly allowance, alongside GPT, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek. It has no Claude Code, no Artifacts, and a 40,000 token input cap per turn.
