What does the Claude Max plan include?
Claude Max is Claude Pro with a bigger meter and four changed rows. On the 54-row comparison on Anthropic's pricing page, read 25 October 2026, Pro and Max match on 50, and Max 5x and 20x differ only on the API credit. Max 20x buys four times Max 5x's session for twice the price, yet Anthropic gives no weekly multiple for either. Fable can take at most half a Max week. Claude Code shares the chat limits, but Max may let it finish its step at every session wall. Pro gets that once a week.

Read the billing row twice. It's the one place Max gives up something Pro has. There's no annual Max plan, so nothing like Pro's $17 rate. The headline feature, the usage multiple, isn't a table row at all: it sits on the plan card ("Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro") and in the FAQ. Everything else on Max, Claude Code included, is on Pro too. Claude Pro vs Claude Max works out whether the $80 step pays for you.
What does 5x or 20x more usage than Pro mean?
It means 5 or 20 times Pro's allowance in each five-hour session, and Anthropic promises nothing firmer. Its Max help page says "Max 5x includes five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance," and Max 20x "includes 20 times." The pricing FAQ adds that "there's no fixed message count." What a session holds depends on how long your chats run, which model you pick and which features you use.
So the multiple is a ratio between plans. It isn't a quota. Set the tiers side by side and Max 20x gives four times Max 5x's session for twice the money. Pro is the baseline, and Anthropic moves it. On 22 September 2026, with the Opus 5.5 launch, it said it was "increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans." It didn't publish the new sizes.
The week doesn't scale the same way. Anthropic gives no weekly multiple for either tier, and its last weekly estimates in hours date from July 2025. Claude weekly limit has those figures and the gap they showed. Is Claude Max worth it prices each tier per Pro allowance.
How do the five-hour session and weekly limits work on Claude Max?
Max has two meters, and you stop at whichever fills first. The session limit refills every five hours. The weekly limit "applies across all models" and resets at a fixed time each week that Anthropic assigns to your account. Per the Max help page, "Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins." Settings > Usage shows both bars and the next reset.
Everything on the account draws from them. Anthropic's usage limits page says claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all count "towards the same usage limit," and Claude Code in an IDE does too. Max also carries a bar Pro doesn't have: a separate weekly limit for Fable.
Claude Code is gentler with Max at the wall. If a session runs out mid-response, Claude Code may finish the step it's on and show "Usage limit reached · wrapping up". Anthropic's Claude Code plan article says that on Pro "it applies up to once per weekly usage period." On Max, "it can apply each time you reach a five-hour session limit, within your weekly limit." Anthropic is still rolling it out.
At either wall you have four moves. Wait for the reset. Switch models if only the Fable bar is full. Turn on usage credits in Settings > Usage, billed at standard API rates. Or move up a tier. Anthropic also hands out occasional limit resets that refill the session or the week, and Claude limit reset explains how they work.
Does Claude Max include Claude Code and Fable?
Yes, both. Claude Code is on every paid plan, so Max doesn't unlock it. It gives it more room. You sign in to Claude Code with your Claude account, and it runs in the terminal and in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains IDEs on the same limits as chat. Watch one trap. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Anthropic says Claude Code uses that key "instead of your Claude subscription", and you pay API rates.
Fable is the model row Max really changes. Anthropic's Fable plan article, dated 2 September 2026, calls Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 "a standard part of your plan" on Max. You can spend "up to 50% of your weekly usage limits" on them. That's a cap inside the week, not extra room: "you can never use more than your weekly limit," and Fable uses it "faster than other Claude models." On Pro, every Fable message runs on usage credits.
In Claude Code, Fable 5.1 needs version 2.1.255 or later and Fable 5 needs 2.1.170. Claude Code usage limit decodes each limit message you might see there.
What are the monthly API credits on Claude Max?
Max 5x includes $100 a month of Claude Platform credit and Max 20x includes $200, added on 7 October 2026 according to Anthropic's release notes. Pro gets none. The credit is for building your own apps on the Claude API, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK. It doesn't pay for interactive Claude Code or for usage credits in the Claude apps.
To claim it, per Anthropic's API credits article:
- Wait until you've been on Max for seven days.
- On claude.ai in a browser, open Settings > Billing.
- In the API credits section, select "Link organization".
- Pick or create a Claude Console organization, review the Supplemental Credit Terms and link it.
Choose that organization with care. You can link only one, and you can't change it yourself later. The credit expires at the end of each billing cycle and doesn't roll over. If you subscribed on iPhone or Android, you still claim it on the web.
How do you upgrade to Claude Max or switch between 5x and 20x?
Open Settings > Billing on claude.ai, select "Upgrade to Max", pick 5x or 20x and confirm. New accounts choose Max during sign-up instead. Anthropic's sign-up article is plain about what happens to a Pro subscriber: "Your Pro plan is upgraded to Max immediately." The billing cycle restarts that day. You pay a full Max month minus a prorated credit for the Pro time you didn't use.
The upgrade clears the wall, too. "Your usage also starts fresh on the Max limits right away," the article says, so a Pro user who's hit the limit can carry on at once. The other plan changes follow their own rules:
| Plan change, as of 25 October 2026 | When it takes effect | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Pro monthly to Max | Right away; the billing cycle restarts | A full Max month minus a prorated credit for unused Pro time |
| Pro annual to Max | Right away | Unused annual time is credited; any excess over a Max month is kept as account credit if the billing address matches |
| Max 5x to Max 20x | Right away | Prorated for the rest of the cycle; API credit prorated at once, then $200 a cycle |
| Max to Max 5x or Pro | End of the billing period | The lower price from renewal, with no refund: "all payments are non-refundable" outside Anthropic's terms or the law, per its refund article |
| Any upgrade bought through Google Play | Right away | The full new price; unused value becomes extra days on the plan |
Downgrades are the slow direction. They wait for the end of the billing period, and How to downgrade Claude Max has the clicks and what you lose. The prices on this page are web prices. Anthropic says "Mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform," and Claude Max price by country shows how much.
What did Claude Max get before Pro?
"Priority access" has a track record you can check. Anthropic's release notes show Max getting a feature before Pro in four launches that give Pro's timing, with a head start of 2 to 24 days. A fifth, Cowork on web and mobile, started with Max and names no date for Pro:
| Feature | Max got it | Pro got it | Head start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory | 23 October 2025 | "over the next two weeks" | Up to 2 weeks |
| Claude in Chrome beta | 24 November 2025, "all Max plan subscribers" | 18 December 2025, "all paid plan subscribers, including Pro" | 24 days |
| Cowork research preview, macOS | 12 January 2026 | 16 January 2026 | 4 days |
| Cowork thread from your phone | 17 March 2026 | "over the next two days" | Up to 2 days |
| Cowork on web and mobile | 7 July 2026, "starting with the Max plan" | "more plans to follow", no date | Not stated |
Not every launch works that way. Anthropic opened the Claude Duet research preview to Pro and Max on the same day, 21 October 2026. And priority at busy times is a row of its own on the plan table, separate from the usage multiple. Anthropic doesn't say how it works.
Is there a free or discounted Claude Max plan?
Not for most people. The Max help page says "We don't offer standard discounted pricing for individual plans (Pro and Max)," and adds that "Our Support team cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons." Anthropic runs promotions now and then and announces them on its own channels.
The one free route is for open-source developers. Anthropic's Claude for Open Source program offers accepted applicants "6 months of free Claude Max 20x". Maintainers qualify with 500 or more dependent repos, 100 or more dependent packages, or 200,000 combined monthly downloads. Listed committers on projects like CPython or Kubernetes qualify too. So do people with 100 or more merged pull requests to repos they don't own in the last 12 months. When the six months end, the account returns to Free, or to your old paid plan at its old rate. Claude Pro free trial covers the other routes.
If you want Claude Opus in a chat window without Max's price, Whizi, which publishes this page, sells it by the message. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month, or $19.99 billed annually, for 2,500 credits, and Claude Opus costs 20 credits a message. That's 125 Opus messages a month, beside GPT and Gemini (Claude in Whizi). It loses to Max on volume and on code. Whizi caps chat at 60 messages an hour and 40,000 input tokens a turn, and Claude Code needs a Claude plan or an API key, so Whizi can't run it.
- Watch Settings > Usage for a week to see whether the session bar or the weekly bar fills first
- Start on Max 5x and move to 20x only if 5x runs out in normal work
- Unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY before running Claude Code on your Max plan
- Claim the monthly API credit after seven days, and pick the Console organization carefully
- Upgrade on the web if you can: Google Play charges the full new price and adds days instead
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Max unlimited?
No. Both Max tiers have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit across all models, and Fable can take at most half the week. Anthropic also says it may limit usage "in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion." Usage credits keep you working past the limits at standard API rates.
What is the difference between Claude Max 5x and 20x?
Usage and the API credit. Max 20x gives 20 times Pro's per-session usage against 5 times, and $200 of monthly API credit against $100, for $200 a month against $100. Every other row on Anthropic's comparison table is the same, Fable's 50% weekly share included. Move up to 20x if 5x still runs out in normal work.
Can you pay for Claude Max annually?
No. As of October 2026 the Max help page says Max "is currently available as a monthly subscription only," and the pricing table lists its billing cycle as Monthly. Pro is the only individual plan with an annual price: $17 a month, billed as $200 up front.
How many messages or tokens do you get on Claude Max?
Anthropic doesn't publish a message or token count for Max. Its pricing FAQ says usage depends on the length and complexity of your chats, the model and the features you use, "so there's no fixed message count." Settings > Usage shows your share as percentage bars. Claude Pro limits lists which plan limits Anthropic does put a number on.
