Does ChatGPT train on your chats? Yes, until you flip one switch.
Free, Go, Plus and Pro chats can be used to train OpenAI's models by default. One ordinary message about a health result, your age, your job and your family gives all four away.
Find it in three taps
- Open Settings. On chatgpt.com, open your account menu and choose Settings. In the app, open the sidebar and tap your profile icon.
- Open Data controls. It's in the Settings list, on the web and in the app.
- Switch it off. Turn off "Improve the model for everyone". Your new chats stay out of training from then on.

Questions
Does paying for ChatGPT Plus stop training?
No. Plus and Pro start with training on, the same as Free and Go. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces and the API are the ones left out of training by default.
Does turning it off take my old chats out of training?
No. The switch covers new chats from then on. Anything already used in training stays there, and deleting a chat does not pull it back out.
Does rating an answer change anything?
Yes. A thumbs up or thumbs down can still let OpenAI use that whole conversation for training, even with the switch off.
Can I keep just one chat out?
Yes. Start a Temporary Chat. It isn't used to train models and doesn't appear in your history. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
What happens to chats I delete?
OpenAI schedules them for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless they were already de-identified or it has to keep them for security or legal reasons.
Does Whizi train on my chats?
No, on any plan. Whizi reaches ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini through their APIs, where your messages aren't used for training by default. The provider may hold a request for up to 30 days to check for abuse.
