What do you do when ChatGPT memory is full?
Only the legacy saved memories list fills up. Check which memory your account has before you delete anything. On Plus or Pro you can also hand the job to ChatGPT. Five steps, about a minute, as of October 2026:
- Open Settings, Personalization, Memory. A Memory summary means you are on improved memory; a list called Saved memories means you are on the legacy list, which is the one that fills.
- Before you delete anything, select every entry and paste it into a note. Version history, where your plan has it, is the only other undo.
- On Plus or Pro, either select Try improved memory (twice the capacity, updated by ChatGPT itself) or check that automatic memory management is on in the saved memories view.
- On Free or Go, or if you want to keep the list, delete at least five lines, starting with duplicates (the order is in the table below).
- Ask ChatGPT to remember the fact that failed, then reopen the list and confirm the line is actually there.
Step 5 is there for a reason. OpenAI's Memory FAQ, as archived on 25 September 2025, said it would notify you when storage is full and that ChatGPT "won't save new memories until you clear space." Users in a community thread opened on 3 February 2025 report the opposite failure. They saw no warning, a "memory updated" confirmation, and no new line in the list.
OpenAI raised the cap twice and never published its size
OpenAI has never published how large the saved memories list is, in words, tokens or entries. We read eight archived copies of its memory help page, from February 2025 to September 2026, and the ChatGPT release notes on 3 October 2026. Each change to the cap is stated as a percentage or a multiple of a number nobody outside OpenAI has been given.
Four dates matter. On 18 February 2025 Enterprise and Edu workspaces got 20% more capacity. On 15 October 2025 the release notes announced automatic management for Plus and Pro on the web. It moves less important memories to the background, so the list is less likely to reach capacity. On 4 June 2026 improved memory began rolling out to Plus and Pro in the US, with "twice as much memory capacity". OpenAI said Free and Go would follow in the following weeks. Then, around 18 September 2026, OpenAI rewrote the page as Memory in ChatGPT. The phrase "memory full" no longer appears on it. The word counts quoted in third party guides are reader estimates, not OpenAI figures.
Who can still see the message depends on which memory system the account runs and on the plan, as of October 2026:
| ChatGPT account and setting | What holds the memory | Can it show memory full? |
|---|---|---|
| Plus or Pro on improved memory (rolling out since 4 June 2026) | A summary ChatGPT keeps up to date itself, at 2x the old capacity | Not as a list you manage; OpenAI no longer documents a full state |
| Plus or Pro on legacy saved memories, automatic management on (web) | The list, with less relevant lines greyed out and moved to the background | Less often; OpenAI says management helps avoid it, not that it prevents it |
| Plus or Pro on legacy saved memories, automatic management off | The list | Yes |
| Free or Go on the saved memories list | The list, with no automatic management | Yes, the most common case |
| Enterprise or Edu workspace | The list, 20% larger since 18 February 2025; improved memory is off by default in ChatGPT for Healthcare and Regulated Workspace | Yes |
| Reference chat history, any plan | Your past chats; nothing extra is stored | No: OpenAI says there is no separate storage limit for it |
What should you delete first when ChatGPT memory is full?
Delete duplicates first, then lines that are no longer true, then one off facts. Move style rules and long reference notes out of memory instead of losing them. Keep the durable lines: your name, job, city, language and standing preferences.
| Order | Kind of memory line | Example | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Duplicates | "Lives in Toronto" next to "Is based in Toronto, Canada" | Delete the shorter one |
| 2 | Lines that contradict a newer one | OpenAI's own example: training for a marathon, then a sprained ankle | Delete the older one |
| 3 | One off facts | A trip in March, a finished assignment, a past deadline | Delete |
| 4 | Rules about tone, length or format | "Always answer in bullet points" | Move to Custom instructions, then delete |
| 5 | Long reference notes | Character bios for a novel, a product spec | Move to a Project's instructions or files, then delete |
Rows 4 and 5 are where the space is. Style rules have their own field. Custom instructions hold 1,500 characters on Free and Go and 5,000 on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education. They apply to every chat and don't count against memory. Reference material belongs in a project. OpenAI's Projects page says project instructions apply only within that project and override your global custom instructions. That way a story bible or a client brief stops crowding out facts about you. If a line holds something you wouldn't want kept at all, delete it instead of moving it. The usual suspects are listed in what never to paste into AI.
What is the prompt to consolidate ChatGPT memories?
There's no merge button. Consolidating ChatGPT memory takes three messages: export the list, have ChatGPT rewrite it shorter, then replace the old list with the new one. Send the first prompt in a new chat with memory on:
```
List every saved memory you have about me, word for word, one per line, numbered. Include all of them, even ones that look minor. Do not summarize, merge or skip anything. After the list, tell me the total number of lines.
```
Copy that answer into a note. It's your backup. Then send the second prompt in the same chat:
```
Rewrite that list into the fewest lines that keep every fact that is still true. Rules: merge lines about the same topic into one line under 25 words. Drop one off events, finished tasks and past dates. Where two lines contradict, keep the newer one and put [CHECK] at the start. Move every rule about tone, length, format or language into a separate block titled CUSTOM INSTRUCTIONS. Output the new memory list as a numbered code block, the CUSTOM INSTRUCTIONS block after it, and then the line count before and after.
```
- Read every [CHECK] line and fix or delete it.
- Paste the CUSTOM INSTRUCTIONS block into Settings, Personalization, Custom instructions, inside your plan's character limit.
- In Saved memories, open the menu next to the search bar and select Delete all, or delete the old lines one by one.
- Send "Remember each line below as its own memory, word for word:" followed by the new list.
- Reopen Saved memories and compare it with the new list; send any missing lines again in groups of five.
We haven't run this on a full account, so we can't give you a typical saving. The before and after count at the end of the second prompt tells you what it did on yours. On improved memory the list is a summary, not entries. There, the equivalent move is typing the correction into the summary's text field ("Forget everything about my 2025 job search").
What happens while ChatGPT memory is full?
Nothing you already saved is lost, and nothing new is added. Existing saved memories keep shaping replies, chat history reference keeps working, and new remember requests are dropped. That last part is easy to miss. The answer in the chat can still read as if the fact was stored.
The community thread linked above is the public record of it. The opening post, from a Plus subscriber on 3 February 2025, describes no warning and a usage bar that had disappeared. Later posts through 2025 describe new entries pushing out old ones. On 21 September 2026 OpenAI Support replied that removing and adding an affected entry again had helped some users. Support said this isn't an official fix and advised copying the entry somewhere safe first. Treat the list in Settings as the truth and the chat's confirmation as a claim to check.
A temporary chat sidesteps the whole problem for one conversation. OpenAI says temporary chats don't create or update memories. Use one for anything you don't want competing for the space.
Why is ChatGPT memory still full after deleting?
ChatGPT memory usually stays full after deleting because the deletions were chats, not memories. OpenAI's help page says saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Deleting the original chat doesn't delete a saved memory made from it. Clearing a hundred conversations frees no memory space at all.
If you deleted saved memories and the message persists, three things explain most cases. OpenAI's 2025 FAQ said deleted memories may continue to be referenced for a few days. So the behavior can lag the list. Usage shows in the Personalization section, so reload Settings instead of trusting the open tab. And if the list has room and new lines still vanish, you've hit the bug in the community thread. Copy the list, delete all, and add the lines back with the consolidation prompt above. OpenAI keeps logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That affects privacy, not space. How ChatGPT memory works explains the two memory systems behind this.
A project holds what memory cannot
If the memory filled because you were storing a project, a project is the right container. ChatGPT offers projects to signed in users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Instructions and files there are read inside that project only, so your saved memories go back to holding facts about you.
Whizi, which publishes this page, offers the same container across vendors. A Whizi project holds up to 32,000 characters of instructions and up to 10 pinned files, and folds them into every message in that project whichever model you pick, so one brief reaches GPT and Claude Haiku, and Claude Sonnet and Gemini from Pro. Whizi loses in two ways. A project block is text you paste and edit, not a memory that learns from new chats. And it applies only inside the project you put it in. If all your work stays in ChatGPT, a ChatGPT project does the job without a second subscription. Leaving ChatGPT entirely is a different move. For that, transfer ChatGPT memory to Claude covers the export prompt.
- Copy every saved memory into a note before deleting anything
- On Plus or Pro, try improved memory or turn on automatic memory management
- Delete duplicates, outdated lines and one off facts first
- Move tone and format rules into Custom instructions, and long reference notes into a Project
- After adding a memory, reopen Saved memories and confirm the line exists
- Remember that deleting chats frees no memory space; only deleting saved memories does
Frequently asked questions
Can you increase ChatGPT memory?
Not directly. There's no setting or purchase that raises the cap. What works is switching a Plus or Pro account to improved memory, which OpenAI said on 4 June 2026 has twice the capacity. You can also turn on automatic memory management, and move style rules and reference notes out of memory into Custom instructions and Projects.
Is the ChatGPT memory limit bigger on Plus than on Free?
OpenAI doesn't say. It publishes no memory size for any plan, so there's no official Free and Plus comparison. What it has published, as of October 2026: improved memory gives Plus and Pro twice the memory capacity, automatic memory management was announced for Plus and Pro only, and the Go plan is sold with longer memory than Free.
How do I clear ChatGPT memory?
Open Settings, Personalization, Memory. On the saved memories list, delete lines one at a time from the menu beside each, or select Delete all from the menu next to the search bar. On improved memory, select Delete and turn off memory from the summary's menu, which removes the remembered information and leaves your chats in place.
How many memories can ChatGPT save?
OpenAI has never published a count, in entries, words or tokens, for any plan. Its help center states only relative changes, such as 20% more capacity for Enterprise and Edu from 18 February 2025. The figures in third party guides are estimates from users.
