Claude limit reset: when each limit refills, the free reset button, and the 13 resets Anthropic pushed itself

In brief

Claude's limit resets on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans add a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. Anthropic also pushed 13 free resets between April and September 2026, and on 22 September 2026 gave Pro, Max and Team one "Reset for free" each, to spend by 22 October 2026.

When does the Claude limit reset on each plan?

Claude's session limit resets on a rolling five hour window on every plan, Free included, and the weekly limit on Pro, Max and Team resets at a day and time tied to your account, not to your billing date. Nothing resets at midnight. Anthropic's pricing page says "paid plans add weekly limits on top." We compiled each plan's reset clock from Anthropic's pricing page, help center and Claude Code docs on 18 October 2026:

Your own reset times show up in three places:

  1. Settings > Usage, on the web or in Claude Desktop. The Current session bar shows "the amount of time remaining in the session", and the Weekly limits bar says when the week resets.
  2. The wall itself. Claude Code prints the time after the word resets, as in "You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm" or "You've hit your weekly limit · resets Mon 12:00am".
  3. Claude Code's /usage command, which shows the plan bars with their reset times. On Pro and Max, a status line script can also read the rate_limits fields, which carry a resets_at time for the five hour and seven day windows.

Two people on the same plan can reset on different days. Anthropic's Pro plan page says "Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins." Paying doesn't move the clock either: the usage credits page says "Usage credits don't affect the reset timing of any of these limits." If you're at the wall right now, Claude usage limit reached walks through the message and the fastest fix.

How often has Anthropic reset everyone's Claude limits?

Anthropic pushed 13 free limit resets between 16 April and 4 September 2026. Ten covered every subscriber. The other three covered only some plans or accounts. Anthropic announced each one after it had already happened. We compiled them from the posts on Anthropic's developer account, @ClaudeDevs, plus one from Lydia Hallie of the Claude Code team, all read on 18 October 2026. The earliest we found is from 16 April, the day Claude Opus 4.7 came out. Eight of the 13 landed in the 45 days from 1 June to 16 July. Then nothing came for 47 days.

Four came with a model launch, counting Fable 5's return on 1 July. Five followed a bug, and four came with no reason at all. None was announced in advance, so nobody outside Anthropic can tell you whether Claude will reset limits today. Twelve of the 13 were posted on @ClaudeDevs, which makes it the account to check after a launch or an outage. The Max only reset of 4 September came from Lydia Hallie's own account instead.

The list also explains a theory that ranks on page one of Google. A GitHub gist logged one account's weekly counter from 9 to 20 June 2026 and concluded that the weekly limit "resets every 72 hours, not 7 days". Four of the five drops it logged came within seven hours after a @ClaudeDevs reset post: on 10, 13, 19 and 20 June. The fifth, on 16 June, matches no post. Read the gist as a record of June's resets, not of a hidden 72 hour week.

What does the "Reset for free" button do?

The "Reset for free" button refills either your five hour session or your weekly limit at once, depending on the offer. It's the only reset you can trigger yourself. Anthropic's limit reset page says resets "are given occasionally to eligible plans, and set your usage limits back to full when you choose to use one." You'll find it in the Resets section of Settings > Usage, and on the limit message itself. The rules, from the same page:

  • You can't undo it once it's used.
  • You don't have to hit a limit before using it.
  • "Your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time."
  • An unused reset expires at the date shown in Settings > Usage.
  • The button isn't in Claude Mobile or in Claude Code in a terminal or IDE. Use a browser or Claude Desktop, and the refill reaches the other apps too, because limits are shared across the account.
  • Downgrade or cancel before using it, and it's gone. It doesn't refund usage credits you've already been billed for.

Anthropic's Opus 5.5 offer gave Pro, Max and Team accounts one reset each on 22 September 2026, to apply by 22 October 2026. @ClaudeDevs wrote: "If you're on Pro, Max, or Team, your reset is available today in Settings → Usage. Apply it any time until Oct 22." Free accounts weren't named. Anthropic's Opus 5.5 announcement called it a reset "which you can now save and use whenever you choose", and @ClaudeDevs raised Claude Code's five hour session limits by 20% the same day. An Opus 5.5 reset left unused by its expiry time on 22 October 2026 lapses. As of 18 October 2026, Anthropic hadn't said when the next offer would come.

Spend it on the weekly bar. A full session bar refills by itself within five hours, while a full weekly bar can mean days of waiting. Lydia Hallie gave the same advice the day it launched: "just make sure you've actually used up what you have left before you use it".

Can you reset the Claude limit early for free?

Only two things reset a Claude limit early for nothing: a "Reset for free" offer on your account, and a reset Anthropic pushes out itself. Everything else people search for either changes nothing or moves the clock without adding usage. Anthropic counts usage per account. Its usage limits page says claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all count "towards the same usage limit", so nothing you do on a device touches it.

What people tryDoes it reset the limit? Why

The /limit-reset reports need a caveat, because none of them comes from Anthropic. A developer blog's test report of 15 September 2026 found it as a hidden command in Claude Code v2.1.271 and v2.1.272, described as a five hour session reset you can use once a week. On ineligible accounts it answers "A session-limit reset isn't available right now." A Max 5x user filed a GitHub issue on 26 September 2026 saying the command told them they had no reset available; it was still open on 18 October 2026, with no reply from Anthropic. Anthropic's commands reference doesn't list it, so treat it as an unannounced test that can vanish. The listed command is /rate-limit-options, which offers to wait and continue automatically when the limit resets, to add usage credits, or to upgrade.

What resets the Claude limit if you pay?

Upgrading is the one paid move that resets the meter. Anthropic's Max sign up page says that after a Pro to Max upgrade, "Your usage also starts fresh on the Max limits right away." You're charged a full Max cycle minus a prorated credit for unused Pro time, and the billing cycle restarts that day. Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200, per the Max plan page.

Usage credits don't reset anything. They keep you working past the wall on Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x, "billed at standard API rates", and the reset times stay where they were. Credits are prepaid. Usage bundles cut the rate: $50 of usage costs $45, $250 costs $200 and $1,000 costs $700, up to $2,000 of bundles a month on Pro and Max. In Claude Code, /usage-credits opens the same settings page.

Whizi, which publishes this page, runs on one reset clock: the calendar month, which turns at 00:00 UTC on the 1st. Pro is $29.99 a month for 2,500 credits, and Claude Sonnet costs 10 credits a message while Claude Opus costs 20, so a month buys 250 Sonnet or 125 Opus messages (Claude in Whizi). Where it loses: unused credits don't roll over, every plan stops at 60 messages an hour, and there's no early reset of any kind. Claude Code still runs on a Claude plan or an API key, so Whizi covers the chat, not the terminal. It fits the week your Claude bar is full and the chat can't wait.

Workflow checklist
  • Open Settings > Usage and read which bar is full and when it resets
  • If the Resets section shows "Reset for free", save it for a full weekly bar; it can't be undone
  • Apply a saved reset before the expiry date in Settings > Usage (22 October 2026 for the Opus 5.5 offer), or it lapses
  • Skip logging out, VPNs, new chats and /reset: the meter belongs to the account
  • After a launch or a bug, check @ClaudeDevs: 9 of the 13 resets Anthropic pushed came with one
  • If the week is gone and the work can't wait, usage credits keep you going and an upgrade to Max starts the meter fresh
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the Claude free limit reset daily?

No, it resets every five hours, not once a day. Anthropic's pricing page says every plan, Free included, resets "on a rolling five-hour session window", and only paid plans add a weekly limit. Free accounts weren't named in the Opus 5.5 reset offer either. If Free runs out most days, is Claude Free good enough weighs it against Pro.

Is there a command to reset Claude limits?

Not a documented one. In Claude Code, /reset is an alias of /clear and only empties the conversation, /usage shows when your limits reset, and /rate-limit-options offers waiting, usage credits or an upgrade. Since September 2026 some users have reported a hidden /limit-reset that resets the five hour session once a week, while others get told no reset is available. Claude usage limit reached covers what to do at the wall.

Did Claude reset limits for everyone today?

Only Anthropic can say, and it posts resets on @ClaudeDevs after they happen. As of 18 October 2026 the last reset for all users was on 1 September 2026, with Fable 5.1, and the 22 September reset was one each subscriber applies alone. Five of the 13 pushed resets followed a bug, so if Claude is misbehaving, is Claude down shows whether Anthropic has an incident open.

Does upgrading to Claude Max reset your limit?

Yes. Anthropic says usage "starts fresh on the Max limits right away" after a Pro to Max upgrade, so a Pro subscriber at the wall can keep going at once. You're charged a full Max cycle minus a prorated credit for unused Pro time, and the billing date moves to the upgrade day. Claude Pro vs Claude Max works out whether the bigger plan pays for itself.
