Why is Claude phone verification not working?
The message most people see isn't on Anthropic's help page. Anthropic's Verify your phone number page (dated 17 August 2026) prints one error. Of the 15 phone verification bug reports filed in Anthropic's claude-code repository from 14 March to 14 September 2026, 14 quote a different one and none quote it. We read all 15 on 18 October 2026 and matched each message to its cause. The message on your screen tells you which case you hit.
| What Claude shows | When it appears | What it means | What fixes it | On Anthropic's help page? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Error sending code. Double check your phone number." | After you submit the number | Anthropic couldn't text that number | Check the country code, then use a different mobile number | Yes, word for word |
| "Unable to send verification code to this number. Try a different number or try again later." | After you submit the number | Anthropic's text step refused the number, often one tied to another account, sometimes a fresh one | Stop retrying, then use the form pinned in issue 34229 or contact Support | No |
| "Too many verification attempts. Wait and try again later." (or "Too many attempts. Wait a few minutes before trying again.") | After several sends or codes | Your attempts hit a rate limit | Stop and wait; one reporter who waited and retried several times was still blocked | No |
| A message that the number was "used too many times" | After you submit the number | Three Claude accounts already verified with it | Ask Support to unlink it from one of them, or use another number | Yes, described |
| The code is rejected | After you type the code | The code expired, or you typed an older one | Use the newest code, or click "Try again" for a fresh one | Yes |
| "Your account is already verified. Try refreshing the page." | In an "Add a phone number to protect your account" box at a Max upgrade checkout | A loop on an account that verified long ago | One reporter was cleared about 24 hours after using the same form | No |
The reports overlap, so the squares add up to more than 15. Four quote both of the first two messages. One person filed two of the 15, so the second "Too many attempts" wording rests on a single reporter, and one report (issue 41976) quotes only "invalid phone number". The 15th shows a screenshot and quotes no text. We counted a quote in the report or its comments, so the main thread, issue 34229 with 742 comments, counts once. The reports came from Belgium, Ukraine, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Uzbekistan, Lebanon and South Africa, and every one of those countries is on Anthropic's list. One Belgian reporter's +32 number failed while their spouse's Belgian number worked on the first try. So the block sits with the number, not the country.
Which phone numbers does Claude reject?
Claude rejects VoIP numbers, Google Voice, numbers created in apps, landlines, any number that can't receive a text, and any number from outside its supported locations. Anthropic's help page lists the first group in one sentence: "you cannot use VoIP numbers, Google Voice, phone numbers created using apps, landlines". It adds "or other numbers that can't receive texts".
The country rule has two halves. You must be physically in a supported place, and so must the number. In Anthropic's words, "We also require a phone number from a supported location to create an account, and there isn't a way to skip this step." The Supported Regions Policy had 185 countries and territories when we counted on 18 October 2026, and the same list covers Claude.ai, Claude Code, Cowork and the API. If your country isn't there, no number fixes it. Claude not available in your country covers that case and the VPN question.
Rented and disposable numbers fall into the "created using apps" group, and they carry a second problem. A number stays on your account forever. If the seller reissues it, a stranger holds the number your account trusts. Don't buy a number or use an SMS verification service to get past the step; we don't list them.
How many Claude accounts can one phone number verify?
One phone number can verify at most three Claude accounts. The help page puts it plainly: "We only allow a maximum of three Claude accounts to be verified with the same phone number." A fourth signup with that number gets the "used too many times" message, which means "there are already three other Claude accounts in our system that were verified using that number."
Anthropic gives two ways out. If you know the email on one of those three accounts, log in to it and ask Support to unlink the number. Otherwise use a number that's never verified a Claude account.
Old accounts count. A reporter on 15 March 2026 suspected the error hits people who reuse a number from another account, or who forgot an earlier one. The error never says so. If you've signed up before, with any email, search your inbox for a Claude login email before you burn a second number.
Why is my Claude verification code not arriving?
Claude sends a six digit code by text message, and Anthropic says it "may take a few minutes to arrive". After five minutes, start over. Its help page gives the order:
- Wait five full minutes from the send. Don't request more codes in that window.
- Click "Try again" to reset the box, then re-enter the number with the right country code. One reporter found the flag picker did nothing until they typed the country code by hand.
- When a code lands, type it at once. Codes are temporary, and only the newest one works.
- If nothing arrives, or you see "Error sending code. Double check your phone number.", switch to a different mobile number.
- If you see "Too many verification attempts", stop. One reporter who waited and retried several times was still blocked, and another was stuck for over an hour after an "Unable to send" error.
- Check is Claude down before you blame your carrier.
A code that never arrives on a number Anthropic accepted is usually the "Unable to send" block in disguise. Two reporters in the main thread never got a text and never saw an error. The form in the last section is the route for that case too.
When does Claude ask for a phone number?
Claude asks for a phone number when you create an account, every time, and it can ask again on an existing account at checkout. The help page is flat about the first case: "We require phone verification for all new users, and there isn't a way to skip this step." "All new users" includes people who sign up with Google. Anthropic gives one reason: "Verifying your phone number helps us prevent spam and abuse."
- New accounts. Every new Claude account verifies a number before its first chat.
- Invited team members. On 17 March 2026, a company in Sri Lanka reported that 20+ people invited to its Claude Team workspace were stuck at the phone step during onboarding.
- Upgrades. On 14 September 2026, a Max subscriber reported an "Add a phone number to protect your account" box during the Max 5x to Max 20x checkout. Two other users confirmed it.
The number isn't how you log in. Anthropic's login page lists Continue with Google and an emailed link, and nothing else. Losing the phone later doesn't lock you out, and Anthropic says the number "is only used for account verification".
Can you change the phone number on your Claude account?
No. Anthropic's help page says "There isn't a way to change your phone number associated with your Claude account once it has been verified." Verify with a number you'll keep for years, ideally one in your own name.
Support can unlink a number from an account, which is how the three account cap gets freed. That frees the number for another account. It doesn't put a new number on the old one, and Anthropic documents no way to do that. Your card is a different story: you can change it, as removing a card from Claude shows.
What to do when Claude still won't verify your number
Use the form pinned in Anthropic's main GitHub thread, or write to Support from the help center. The pinned comment, dated 20 March 2026, asks blocked users to submit the email they use for Claude. It says "most go through within a day", and to try signing in again the next day. It also says the team is working "on a permanent fix". The comment's author shows no staff badge. The issue's assignee pinned it, and the thread was still open on 18 October 2026 with 742 comments. Reporters in April and May said it worked within 12 hours to two days. Anthropic's help center doesn't link it, so open the form from issue 34229 itself, never from a copy elsewhere.
Support works without an account. Anthropic's support page tells logged out users to click the message icon in the lower right of the help center and pick "I can't login". There's no phone line, and Anthropic answers in writing only. Say which message you saw, word for word, and from which country.
You can also reach Claude without a Claude account. GitHub Copilot lists Claude Sonnet and Opus models in its supported models reference. Developers can call Claude through Amazon Bedrock with an AWS account. None of these is a way around location rules. Anthropic's list also covers models sold through cloud platforms and resellers.
Whizi is another of those apps. Whizi's sign-up checks an email code or a Google account, and it reaches Claude through OpenRouter, so you never verify a number with Anthropic. Starter includes Claude Haiku and Pro adds Claude Sonnet and Opus, as using Claude in Whizi explains. It's for someone in a listed country who wanted Claude beside GPT and Gemini anyway. If you only want Claude's free tier, keep at the form. It costs nothing.
- Read the exact message first; the table above maps each one to its cause
- Use a mobile number from a supported country that receives texts; VoIP, Google Voice, app numbers and landlines fail
- Wait five full minutes before asking for another code, and use only the newest one
- Seeing "Too many verification attempts"? Stop retrying and come back the next day
- Seeing "Unable to send verification code to this number"? Submit the form pinned in GitHub issue 34229, then sign in again the next day
- Verify with a number you will keep; Anthropic cannot change it later
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Claude without a phone number?
No, not with a Claude account. Anthropic requires phone verification for all new users and says there isn't a way to skip the step, even with Google sign-in. You can reach Claude models without one through another app, such as GitHub Copilot or an aggregator, and which AI apps skip the phone number compares the rest.
Can I use the same phone number for two Claude accounts?
Yes, up to three. Anthropic allows a maximum of three Claude accounts per phone number, and a fourth gets a message that the number was used too many times. Support can unlink the number from one account if you log in to it. The number must also come from one of Anthropic's 185 supported places, which Claude not available in your country lists.
Can I change my phone number on Claude?
No. Anthropic says there isn't a way to change the number on a Claude account once it's verified. Support can unlink it to free it for another account, but can't swap in a new one. You log in by email link or Google, so losing the phone won't lock you out. Payment details are different, as removing a card from Claude shows.
Why is Claude not sending me a verification code?
Usually because Anthropic's text step has refused the number, which shows as "Unable to send verification code to this number" or as silence. Wait five minutes, click Try again, and check the country code. If it still fails, use the form pinned in Anthropic's GitHub issue 34229. First rule out an outage on is Claude down.
