Claude tax ID type by country: 13 types for Spain, the EU, eight Latin American countries and India, and the 5 that can remove the tax

In brief

Pick the Claude Tax ID type that matches your tax number, such as European VAT number in Spain or Mexican RFC number in Mexico, or leave it blank, because the field is optional. The names come from Stripe, not Anthropic. Of 13 Stripe types for Spain, EU VAT, eight Latin American countries and India, Stripe says 5 can remove tax.

Which tax ID type should you pick in Claude's checkout?

Pick the type that matches the number your tax office gave you, and only if you're buying as a business. Claude's form asks for a country, then a type, then the number. The types come from Stripe, which runs Claude's checkout and hosts its invoices. In a March 2026 GitHub report, a subscriber in Bulgaria said the form offered a European VAT number and a Bulgarian unified ID. Those are the two Bulgarian types on Stripe's customer tax ID list. That's why the table uses Stripe's names.

We compiled this table on 18 October 2026 from Stripe's customer tax ID list. Columns two to four are Stripe's words: its type name, its example and its own "Impact in Tax Calculation" mark. Stripe defines that mark in one line: "Stripe Tax won't apply tax if this tax ID is provided, in line with the relevant laws." Anthropic doesn't say which tax engine it uses, so read the column as Stripe's rule and your next invoice as the proof. The rest of Stripe's list doesn't change the picture: its types for Bolivia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, El Salvador and Venezuela are all marked "No", and so is every EU national number it lists, such as Germany's Steuernummer or Italy's Codice Fiscale. In the EU, only the European VAT number carries a "Yes".

Three sources stand behind this page, and each covers a different part. Anthropic's help articles say the field is optional, where it sits and that a change reaches future invoices only. None of its three tax ID articles names a single type. Stripe, which hosts Claude's card field and its invoice PDFs, publishes the type names, the formats and the tax mark. One user report links the two: the Bulgarian subscriber saw Stripe's Bulgarian names in Claude's menu. We haven't seen Claude's live menu for a Spanish, Latin American or Indian address. When we opened the form on 1 September 2026, it had a Tax ID type menu, which is all we can confirm first hand.

Do you have to fill in the tax ID on Claude?

No, the tax ID on Claude is optional for everyone. Anthropic's tax ID article, dated 6 August 2026, puts it this way: "If your address is eligible for tax purposes, an optional field for your Tax or VAT ID will appear." You can subscribe with it blank.

The field doesn't set your tax. Your address does. Anthropic's billing address article, also dated 6 August 2026, says "Your billing address determines how taxes are calculated on your Claude purchases." On Pro and Max, that address is the one on your card. Claude Pro lists at $20 a month, and Anthropic's pricing page adds, as of October 2026, that "Prices shown don't include applicable tax." So the tax line at checkout comes from where your card says you live.

A business that leaves the field blank still gets an invoice. It just won't carry the company's number. Stripe says a customer's tax IDs "display in the header of invoice and credit note PDFs", so the number is there for your accountant. Whether you should register for VAT, or which number your company should use, is a question for your tax office or adviser. This page only says what the form does.

Team and the API work the same way, in other menus. On a Team plan the field sits in the same Update form under Billing Settings, per Anthropic's Team article of 16 March 2026. In the Claude Console it's under Settings, then Organization, with a Save changes button.

What should you pick under Tipo de ID fiscal in Spain?

In Spain, pick European VAT number if your NIF is registered for intra-EU trade, and Spanish NIF number only if you just want the NIF printed. Those are the two Spanish types on Stripe's list, and they behave differently. The Spanish NIF number type (Stripe's code es_cif, the old CIF) is marked "No". It puts the NIF on the invoice and changes nothing else. The European VAT number takes the same NIF with ES in front, like Stripe's example ESA1234567Z, and it's marked "Yes".

Stripe checks every EU VAT number against the European Commission's VIES register. That check "usually takes only a few seconds", Stripe says. A Spanish NIF only shows in VIES once it's in the Registro de Operadores Intracomunitarios (ROI). Spain's administracion.gob.es VAT page, updated 14 April 2026, warns that an operator "no constará en VIES" unless box 582 of form 036, the ROI request, is ticked. The Agencia Tributaria's ROI page lists buying services from businesses not established in Spain among the operations that call for a NIF-IVA. You can look up your own number on VIES before you type it.

Two edge cases. Billed from the Canary Islands? Stripe lists a separate Canary Islands NIF type, also marked "No". And if you're a private buyer (a particular) with a DNI, you can skip the field, because Anthropic makes it optional.

Which type do you pick in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru?

Each of these countries has one type on Stripe's list, and its name tells you which number goes in. That's RFC in Mexico, CUIT in Argentina, NIT in Colombia, RUT in Chile (Stripe calls it Chilean TIN) and RUC in Peru, Ecuador and Uruguay.

Stripe marks Mexico's RFC, Argentina's CUIT, Colombia's NIT and Ecuador's RUC "No". Those numbers print on the invoice, and the tax stays as your address sets it. Chile's RUT, Peru's RUC and Uruguay's RUC are marked "Yes". Stripe Tax treats them like a VAT number, so a valid business number there can change the tax line.

Copy the format in Stripe's example, dots and check digit included. Stripe's Checkout guide says it verifies that tax IDs "are formatted correctly, but not that they're valid." So a wrong digit can pass. Its tax ID guide adds: "The invoice includes the customer tax ID whether or not it's valid." Read the number twice before you save.

Brazil: CPF or CNPJ, and why some people find no Brazil option

In Brazil, CPF is the type for a person and CNPJ the type for a company, and Stripe marks both "No". Neither removes anything from the charge. The number only prints in the invoice header. Both are issued by the Receita Federal.

Not everyone in Brazil sees them. A guide from SSD Nodes, published 18 September 2026, says a Brazilian address gets both CPF and CNPJ in the menu, though it cites Anthropic and Stripe documents, not a checkout it ran. Yet Google's autocomplete in Portuguese suggests "tipo de id fiscal claude não tem brasil", so some people look for Brazil and don't find it. Anthropic gives one documented reason: it shows the field only for an address that's "eligible for tax purposes".

Stripe's shorter Checkout list has no Brazil, Argentina or Colombia types, but it's an unlikely cause. That list also lacks Bulgaria's unified ID, and the Bulgarian subscriber saw that type in Claude's form. So Claude's form seems to draw on Stripe's longer list, which does carry CPF and CNPJ. Anthropic doesn't say why a Brazilian address would get no menu.

If Brazil isn't in the menu, you can still subscribe. The field is optional, and leaving it out doesn't block the payment.

Does an EU VAT number remove VAT from a Claude invoice?

For a VAT registered business, an EU VAT number is meant to take the VAT off under the reverse charge. The EU's Your Europe page says a business selling services to businesses in another EU country doesn't usually charge VAT. The customer pays instead, "at the applicable rate in their country", through the reverse charge. Private buyers are different: electronic services "are always taxed in the customer's country". Your Europe writes that for sellers inside the EU, and the EU's One Stop Shop runs a non-Union scheme for sellers based outside it who sell services to consumers there. Stripe says Stripe Tax "applies the reverse charge or zero rate according to applicable laws when the tax ID has the required number format". India's GST number carries the same "Yes".

It doesn't always work on Claude. Two GitHub reports show it.

Neither thread got a reply from Anthropic on GitHub. So check before you count on it. After you save the ID, open the Update form again and make sure it's still there. Then read the tax line on the next invoice. If VAT still shows, write to Anthropic support. Anthropic already asks non-US customers for a "VAT registration certificate" when they want a fixed billing address, so that's the document to have ready.

How do you add or change the tax ID after you've paid?

You add or change the tax ID in Settings, then Billing, then Update next to your card. Pick the country and type, type the number and save. When we opened it on 1 September 2026, the form held a card field, a billing address, the "Use a different name on invoices" box, the Tax ID type menu and the number. There's no separate tax page, and no delete button: removing a card from Claude goes through the same form.

The change reaches the next invoice and nothing before it. Anthropic says updates "will only apply to future billing cycles" and that "Previously completed invoices cannot be updated retroactively." So set the number before your renewal date, not after. If your company also needs its name on the invoice, tick "Use a different name on invoices" in the same form. Our Claude receipt guide shows where the PDF lands and how the name prints.

Workflow checklist
  • Buying for yourself: leave the tax ID blank; Anthropic makes it optional
  • Spanish business registered in VIES: pick European VAT number and type ES plus your NIF
  • Mexico, Argentina, Colombia or Brazil: the RFC, CUIT, NIT, CPF or CNPJ prints on the invoice and leaves the tax as is
  • Copy the format of Stripe's example, dots and check digits included
  • Save, reopen the Update form, and check the number is still there
  • Set it before the renewal date, because paid invoices can't be changed
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a tax ID required to buy Claude Pro?

No. Anthropic calls the Tax or VAT ID field optional and shows it only when your address is eligible for tax purposes, so you can pay with it blank. Checkout needs a card and a billing address, and Claude payment methods lists which cards it takes.

Why does Claude say my tax ID is invalid?

Usually because the number doesn't match the format of the type you picked. Stripe, which hosts the form, checks the format at checkout, so ESA1234567Z passes as a Spanish VAT number and A12345678 doesn't. Pick the right country and type first, then copy the example's layout. If it's the card that fails, Claude card declined explains each message.

Can I add my VAT number to a Claude invoice I already paid?

No. Anthropic says previously completed invoices cannot be updated retroactively, so a tax ID added today shows from the next invoice on. Set it before your renewal date. Claude receipt covers where each invoice PDF sits and how to put a company name on the next one.

Do individuals pay VAT on Claude Pro?

In the EU, yes as a rule: Anthropic's $20 list price excludes tax, and your billing address sets the rate, not the tax ID field. A Bulgarian subscriber's €15.00 plan billed €18.00, which is 20% Bulgarian VAT. Claude Pro price by country shows what that adds up to in each store.
