What does each Claude payment message mean?
A Claude payment message tells you who has to act: you, your bank or Anthropic. Read it before you reach for another card. We didn't force a decline on our own account. The wording below comes from GitHub reports filed against Anthropic, Anthropic's help center, Stripe's code reference and Google autocomplete, all read on 11 October 2026.
| What you see | Where it's reported | What it usually means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Your card was declined." | GitHub issues 65984 and 72178, June 2026 | Your bank refused, or Stripe's fraud screening blocked it. Stripe files both under generic_decline | Check the billing address and 3D Secure, then call your bank |
| "Your payment couldn't be processed. Check your card details and try again." | GitHub issue 65984, on an API credits purchase | A card detail failed a check | Retype the number, expiry and security code |
| "Your card number is incorrect" | Google autocomplete; Stripe code incorrect_number | Stripe read the number as wrong | Retype it, or use a different card, as Stripe advises |
| A bank verification page that fails or never finishes | Anthropic's decline article; Stripe code authentication_required | 3D Secure didn't complete | Enter the one time code or approve the charge in your bank app |
| "Payment failed. Please try again" | Google autocomplete for "claude payment failed" | No reason was passed on | Retry later, or try another card |
| Your paid plan suddenly shows Free | Anthropic's billing FAQ | A renewal charge failed and Anthropic downgraded the account | Open Settings, then Billing, and click Update |
| "You have a active subscription" when you try to pay again | GitHub issue 50710, April 2026 | The plan stayed stuck after a failed Max renewal, by the reporter's account | Contact Anthropic support with the error |
| "Your organization has disabled Claude subscription access for Claude Code" | GitHub issue 58598, May 2026 | An expired card failed the monthly charge, per the reporter | Update the card on claude.ai under Settings, then Billing |
Rows one and five show no reason. Either the bank sent none, or Stripe's fraud screening blocked the charge and it surfaces as a plain decline. Rows two and three are yours to fix in a minute. The last two are rare, and both need a person at Anthropic, not a new card.
Why can't Anthropic tell you why your card was declined?
Anthropic can't tell you because your bank doesn't tell Anthropic. Its decline article, dated 10 July 2026, says so up front: "we don't receive detailed information from issuing banks regarding the specific reasons for a decline." We counted Stripe's own reference to see how often that's literally true.
Stripe's decline code table lists 50 card codes, two of them deprecated. It gives 13 of them the description "for an unknown reason": 12 declines, plus reenter_transaction, which the issuer couldn't process. It tells merchants to show 4 more, including fraudulent and stolen_card, exactly like a generic decline. Those 4 have a known reason that you're not shown. That's 17 of 50 that reach you as a bare "declined". For 26 of the 50, Stripe's next step sends the customer to the card issuer, some of them after one retry.
Support can't do better than the code. One Hacker News commenter quoted Anthropic support's reply in April 2026: "We have no way of knowing why your card was declined." The same commenter found the cause alone. A "Secure by Visa" code page appeared when paying for Pro, but not when buying extra credits, and the card failed until the code was entered. The bank wanted a code.
How do you fix a declined card on Claude?
Fix the billing address and the bank check first, because those are the two causes Anthropic names that you control. Then work down the list.
- Read the exact message and find its row in the table above.
- Type the billing address as your bank holds it. Anthropic warns that "even minor discrepancies, such as a missing accent mark or a misspelled street name, can trigger a decline."
- Finish 3D Secure. Anthropic says to complete the one time password or the approval in your bank's app or website.
- Check that the card's billing country is on Anthropic's supported list.
- If you're paying from a different country than the one that issued the card, approve the charge in your bank app or turn on online and international payments. Stripe's card decline guide says a card from one country used from an IP address in another can draw a legitimate decline.
- Check the balance covers the full charge, tax included.
- Retry later or use another card. Anthropic says temporary technical or network issues can cause a decline too.
- Call your bank and ask why a charge from Anthropic was refused.
If you're retrying because the plan lapsed, update the card first. Anthropic's billing FAQ puts it under Settings, then Billing, then Update, and the new card becomes the default for every renewal after that. On our own Max account, the Payment area says the default card pays "subscription renewals, extra usage, and auto-reload." So one bad card can stop all three.
Which cards does Claude accept, and do prepaid or virtual cards work?
Claude Pro and Max bought on the web take a credit or debit card and nothing else. Anthropic's billing FAQ says, "For subscriptions purchased on the web, we only accept credit or debit cards." Its decline article names PayPal and Venmo as not accepted, and it gives only self serve Enterprise plans and API accounts on monthly invoicing a second option, an ACH bank transfer.
Prepaid cards depend on the plan. Anthropic's Team billing FAQ accepts "credit, debit, or prepaid cards." The Pro and Max FAQ doesn't mention prepaid at all, so Anthropic hasn't promised one works there. Virtual cards get no mention in either article as of October 2026. Our Claude payment methods page has every route by plan and country.
A card that clears at signup can still fail a month later. Stripe says a bank can demand 3D Secure again on a charge made while you're away, such as a renewal, and then the customer has to come back and retry. That's one reason renewals fail on cards that worked the first time.
Region rules sit on top of the card, because Anthropic's decline article says the billing address has to match the card's origin country and that country has to be on its supported list before the charge can go through. Its Pro signup article, updated 6 August 2026, adds that paid plans are only for people "physically located in one of our supported locations". Claude not available in your country counts that list and explains the phone and location checks.
What happens to your Claude account after a failed renewal?
A failed renewal drops your Claude account to the free plan. Anthropic's billing FAQ lists it as one of two reasons a paid account shows as Free. The other is signing in with a different email than the one that pays. Check that first. Anthropic doesn't publish a retry schedule or a grace period for web plans, as of October 2026.
Apple and Google do publish theirs, for plans bought in the Claude app. Who bills you decides what a failed renewal does.
| Who bills the plan | After a renewal fails | Where you fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic, on claude.ai | The account drops to Free. No retry window is published | Settings, then Billing, then Update |
| Apple, in Claude for iOS | The App Store retries for up to 60 days. A 3, 16 or 28 day grace period applies only if the developer turns it on | Your Apple Account payment settings. Apple retries at once after you update |
| Google Play, in Claude for Android | A grace period, then account hold. The two add up to 60 days by default | Your Google Play payment methods |
Those store rules come from Apple's developer documentation and Google's, read on 11 October 2026. Neither says whether Anthropic turned a grace period on for Claude, so we can't tell you if you keep Pro during the retries.
Two GitHub reports show what can go wrong after the downgrade. In issue 50710, opened 19 April 2026, a Max subscriber's renewal failed for insufficient funds. The account went to Free, and paying with a new card returned "You have a active subscription." In issue 58598, opened 13 May 2026, an expired card made Claude Code say subscription access was disabled, with no mention of billing. A bot closed both. Neither got a reply from Anthropic staff on GitHub.
Can you pay for Claude through the App Store instead?
Yes. Buying Pro inside Claude for iOS or Android hands the charge to Apple or Google, so Anthropic's card check never runs. Anthropic's FAQ says app plans are paid through the App Store or Google Play, with their payment options. Apple's payment methods page, published 7 August 2026, lists Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, Toss Pay and phone billing in South Korea, PayPay in Japan and PayPal in the United States.
Pro costs the same in the US App Store as on the web, $20.00 a month, as of 11 October 2026. Max 5x costs $124.99 a month in the app against "From $100" on Anthropic's pricing page. In South Korea the App Store lists Claude Pro Monthly at ₩33,000.
The store route has two limits. It doesn't help if your country isn't on Anthropic's list, because the same location rules apply to the app. And a store plan is managed and cancelled in the store, which how to cancel Claude Pro covers. If the old card is still on claude.ai, how to remove a card from Claude explains why Anthropic only lets you replace it.
Whizi doesn't get you past a bank refusal. Its web checkout runs on Stripe too, so a card your bank blocks for Claude can fail there in the same way. What Whizi changes is how many renewals can fail: Whizi Pro carries Claude Sonnet and Claude Opus next to ChatGPT on one subscription at $29.99 a month, and its iPhone app bills through Apple. For declines across ChatGPT and Gemini as well, our guide to paying for AI when your card is declined sorts each cause by who can fix it.
- Read the exact message before you try another card
- Type the billing address exactly as your bank holds it, accents included
- Finish any 3D Secure code or bank app approval before checkout closes
- Confirm the card's billing country is on Anthropic's supported list
- After a failed renewal, update the card under Settings, then Billing
- If the web checkout keeps failing, subscribe in the Claude app instead
Frequently asked questions
Why is my card declined on Claude when it works everywhere else?
Claude's checkout runs checks that a shop till doesn't. The billing address has to match your bank's record, the card's country has to be on Anthropic's supported list, and your bank may demand 3D Secure for an online subscription. Anthropic can't see which one failed, so your bank is the one to ask.
Can I use a prepaid card for Claude Pro?
Anthropic doesn't say it works. Its Pro and Max FAQ names only credit or debit cards, while its Team FAQ accepts credit, debit or prepaid cards. If a prepaid card fails on Pro, a debit card from your bank is the option Anthropic documents.
Does Claude retry a failed payment?
Anthropic doesn't publish a retry schedule for web plans. Its FAQ says a failed payment downgrades the account to Free and sends you to Settings, then Billing, to update the card. A plan bought in the iPhone app is different: Apple retries the renewal for up to 60 days.
