The Payment section has one button, and it is not Delete
Open Claude, click your initials in the lower left, choose Settings, then Billing. The panel has four parts: your plan and renewal date at the top, then Payment, then Invoices, then Cancellation.
The Payment section is one line. Opened on 1 September 2026 on a live Max plan, it showed the card brand and the last four digits, and beside them a single button labelled Update. No delete control appears anywhere in that region. People searching for this assume they have missed a menu. They have not.
Clicking Update opens a panel headed Payment method with a card field, a billing address field, a "Use a different name on invoices" checkbox, a Tax ID selector, and a submit button also labelled Update. It is a replacement form, and nothing in it removes anything.
That single design decision is why the top Google result for this question is a Reddit thread titled "How can Anthropic keep your credit card hostage!?" and the third is a Hacker News post asking for a way to remove a card. Below are the three real routes, ranked by what you actually want.
Anthropic wrote the answer down: there is no remove button
The Paid plan billing FAQ answers this under the heading "How can I change or remove the card on my Pro or Max subscription?". Three sentences carry the whole answer:
- "There's no separate option to remove a card, and updating to a new card replaces the old one for billing purposes."
- "The billing page only shows your current default card. Previously used cards are no longer charged, but they may remain stored with our payment processor."
- "If you need a previous card fully removed from your account, please contact our support team."
Read that second line twice, because it is the part people miss. Replacing a card stops it being charged. It does not delete it. If your reason for being here is a stolen card, a closed business account, or a card you do not want held anywhere, replacement is not the finish line and support is.
This is a different shape from the rest of the category. ChatGPT hides its delete option while a subscription is active and shows it once nothing needs charging. Google puts a Remove button on three separate surfaces. Claude offers none, and documents that it offers none.
Three problems bring people here, and they take three different routes
Match yours to a row before you click anything, because two of the three routes do nothing for the other two problems.
| What you want | The route | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| A different card charged from now on | Settings, Billing, Update, enter the new card | Does not cancel the plan or delete the old card |
| To stop paying Anthropic | Settings, Billing, Cancel, at least 24 hours before renewal | Does not remove the card from the account |
| The old card gone entirely | Contact support and ask for its removal | Not available as a setting, on any plan |
If you want two of these, order matters. Cancel first, then ask support to clear the card, because a support conversation about a card on a live subscription tends to end with a suggestion to update it instead.
One route that is not on the list: cancelling the card at your bank. It eventually stops the charge, and it also drags the account through failed payment retries. Anthropic's own FAQ notes that a failed payment downgrades the account to free, so the outcome matches cancelling, reached slower and with your bank in the middle.
Subscribed in the iPhone or Android app? Anthropic never had your card
Anthropic states it at the top of the same billing FAQ: subscriptions bought in Claude for iOS or Claude for Android are handled by the App Store or Google Play, and the payment method and receipts live in that store account. Nothing in claude.ai will show or remove that card, because Anthropic never received it.
On iPhone or iPad: the card lives in the iOS Settings app, under your name, then Payment & Shipping. The subscription itself is cancelled from the app: initials top right, Billing, Manage subscription.
On Android: the card lives in the Google Play Store under your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, then Payment methods. Cancel through the same Billing then Manage subscription route in the Android app.
Both store cards are shared across every app you have ever bought, so removing one there reaches much further than Claude. On mobile the cleaner move is almost always to cancel the subscription and leave the card where it is.
Changing the card does not stop the next charge
Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period. Anthropic's cancellation article says the plan runs to the end of the current billing period, and that you should cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid paying for another one. That 24 hour margin is the most expensive line on this page.
Refunds start from "non-refundable". Anthropic's refund article opens with it: except where the Consumer Terms or the law say otherwise, payments are not refunded. The documented exception is the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, where a refund is available within 14 days of purchase, prorated according to use. Elsewhere it runs through Get help, then Send us a message, then Claude Refund Request, which checks eligibility before it offers anything.
An App Store charge is Apple's to refund. The article is blunt: only Apple can review and issue those, at reportaproblem.apple.com, and requesting a refund does not cancel the subscription. For Play Store charges on an inactive subscription, support asks for the Google Play email or the GPA order number from the receipt, in the format GPA.xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxx.
A pending bank dispute freezes everything. Anthropic's refund article says no refund is issued while a bank dispute is pending. You either wait for the bank or withdraw the dispute. Our refunds guide covers the same decision across every provider.
The card you are clearing is probably paying for more than Claude
Almost nobody arrives at a billing page for one card. They arrive because a statement had more AI on it than expected.
Two minutes of arithmetic settles it. Run the stack through the AI subscription savings calculator, then read is Claude Pro worth it if Anthropic is the line you are weighing. Most people who audit find one subscription doing a job another already does.
If the price is the reason you are leaving rather than the product, Whizi vs Claude Pro is the honest side by side and Whizi pricing has the numbers: Pro is $19.99 a month billed yearly, $239.88 for the year, and carries Claude Sonnet next to GPT and Gemini in one workspace. The trade to know before switching: Claude Opus sits on the Powerhouse tier at $49.99, not on Pro. If Opus is the reason you pay Anthropic, a Pro plan here does not replace it.
And if you are staying with Claude, the useful thing you just learned is where the Cancel button lives, which is the same panel. Our how to cancel Claude Pro walkthrough covers the web, iPhone and Android routes and what happens to your chats.
- Decide first: replace the card, stop paying, or get the old card deleted
- Use Update to replace, Cancel to stop paying, and support for actual deletion
- Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date if you are leaving
- Check your phone for a second Claude subscription billed by Apple or Google
- Keep the confirmation email until the final billing date has passed
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no remove button for my card on Claude?
Because Anthropic did not build one. Its billing FAQ says there is no separate option to remove a card, and that updating to a new card replaces the old one for billing purposes. The panel shows only your current default card.
Does replacing my card delete the old one from Anthropic?
Not necessarily. Anthropic says previously used cards are no longer charged but may remain stored with its payment processor. If you want a card fully removed, its help centre tells you to contact support and ask.
Does removing or changing my card cancel Claude Pro?
No. The subscription keeps running and the new card is charged at the next renewal. To stop paying, use the Cancel button in the Cancellation section of the same Billing panel, at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
Where is my card if I subscribed in the Claude app?
In your Apple or Google account. Anthropic states that iOS and Android subscriptions are handled by the App Store or Google Play, and that you manage the payment method and receipts through that store account instead of through claude.ai.
I was charged after I changed my card. What happened?
Usually the new card was charged at renewal, which is what changing it does. If the charge came from somewhere else, check your phone for an app store subscription on the same account, and check whether the cancellation landed inside the 24 hour window.
Can I use a different card without losing my plan?
Yes, and it is the one thing this panel does well. Settings, Billing, Update, enter the new card, Update again. The plan continues without a gap and the new card becomes the default for every future renewal.
