There is no billing screen in Gemini, and that is the whole problem
Open gemini.google.com and look for a payment section. There is not one. Google's own help centre says why in a single sentence: "You can subscribe to a Google AI plan through Google One." The AI plan is a Google One membership wearing a different name, so every payment control lives one product away.
That is why this question produces a Google support thread as its top result rather than an article. The thread, opened on 1 October 2025 and now locked, is titled "how do i get my card off my account" and 33 other people marked it as their question too.
The card itself is in your Google account, and Google exposes it on more than one surface:
- pay.google.com, the Google payments centre, with tabs for Activity, Payment methods, Subscriptions and services, Addresses, Settings, Customer orders and Transaction tax. Each saved card has Remove and Edit under it.
- wallet.google.com, where clicking a card opens Payment method details with Edit, Edit nickname and Remove payment method.
- play.google.com, under Payments and subscriptions, whose Edit payment methods link hands you back to the payments centre.
So the Remove button is not hidden. Three different Google surfaces offer it. The reason it fails is a rule underneath all three.
Why the Remove button refuses: the card is still paying for something
A Google Platinum Product Expert answered the locked thread. That is a community expert answer inside Google's own forum rather than a policy document, and it explains almost every failed attempt: "A payment method cannot be removed if it's used for an active, recurring payment."
The same answer adds the part that catches people who did cancel: "You cannot remove a credit card if it is being used for any other active Google subscription. If you have other subscriptions, you would need to add a new card first before removing the old one."
Google accounts collect subscriptions quietly. YouTube Premium, extra storage, a Play Pass, an app someone bought two years ago on a phone that no longer exists. Any one of them holds the card in place, and none of them is visible from Gemini.
The check is three clicks. Open pay.google.com, click Subscriptions and services, and read the Active tab. Every row there is a claim on a card. Clear the rows or move them to a different card, and the Remove button starts working.
Cancel the AI plan before you touch the card
Google documents the cancellation route through Gemini rather than through Google One, which is the one path most people never find:
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- At the bottom, click Settings & help.
- Click Manage subscription. This opens Google One settings.
- Click Cancel membership, then Cancel.
If you want to keep storage and drop only the AI, that is a downgrade rather than a cancellation: Google One, then Manage membership, then Change membership plan, then pick a plan under "Downgrade options". Google adds a useful line here: if there is no downgrade option, you are already on the lowest plan.
Cancelling a Google One membership is not the same as cancelling Google AI Pro on its own, because they are the same subscription. Our how to cancel Google AI Pro walkthrough covers what happens to files that sit above the free storage quota after the membership ends, which is the part worth reading before you press Cancel.
Bought it on a phone? The card is with Apple or Google Play
Google's help centre is unusually candid about this: "If you already have a Google One subscription, the app you originally subscribed to Google One from will open to complete the upgrade. On the payment screen, the other app will be listed." And on iPhone, opening Manage subscription "opens your subscriptions in Apple settings. Select the app you used to subscribe to Google One."
The route the membership was first bought through owns the billing afterwards. That produces three possible homes for one card, none of them inside Gemini:
| Where you first subscribed | Where the card lives | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Google One on the web | Google payments centre | pay.google.com, Payment methods, Remove |
| The Gemini or Google One Android app | Google Play, same Google account | play.google.com, Payment methods, Edit payment methods, Remove |
| The Gemini or Google One iPhone app | Apple Account | iOS Settings, your name, Payment & Shipping, Edit, Delete |
One more Google quirk worth knowing before you assume the desktop route is simple. Google One's own "Change your card" article routes the web flow through the Play Store: Google One, then Settings, then Change payment method, and its next instruction is "In Google Play, on the left, click My subscriptions." Even the web path lands in Play.
The backup card that keeps billing after the first one is gone
Google Play lets a subscription carry a second payment method, and almost nobody remembers setting one. Google describes it plainly: "If your primary payment method doesn't work, your backup payment method will be charged."
So a card removed cleanly, on a subscription you meant to keep, can still produce a charge, from a different card you also forgot about. The removal worked. A second card you had forgotten about paid the bill.
Clear it at play.google.com, in Subscriptions, by clicking Manage next to the subscription and then Backup payment method. Google confirms the obvious: "You can remove backup payment methods at any time."
While you are in the payments centre, the Activity tab is the fastest audit of what your Google account has actually been charging you for. Most people find at least one line they had stopped noticing.
If the reason is the bill rather than the product
A Google AI plan bundles storage with the model, which is exactly why it is hard to leave and hard to compare. The bill covers more than Gemini, and cancelling costs you more than Gemini.
Work out the real number first with the AI subscription savings calculator, then read ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Gemini Advanced if you are choosing which single vendor plan to keep. Two of those stack to $40 a month faster than anyone plans for.
Whizi vs Gemini Advanced is the side by side, and Whizi pricing has the figures: Pro is $19.99 a month billed yearly, $239.88 for the year, with Gemini alongside GPT, Claude Sonnet, Grok and DeepSeek under one card. The honest trade: no third party workspace gives you the Google side of a Google AI plan. Storage, Drive, Photos and the Workspace integrations stay with Google, so if those are why you subscribed, this is a comparison you should lose on purpose.
- Open pay.google.com and read the Active tab before touching anything
- Cancel or move every subscription still pointing at the card
- Cancel the AI plan through gemini.google.com, Settings & help, Manage subscription
- Remove the card at pay.google.com or wallet.google.com and confirm
- Clear any backup payment method on remaining Play subscriptions
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not remove my card from Gemini?
Because the card is not in Gemini. It is on your Google account, and a Google product expert answering the official community thread says a card used for an active recurring payment cannot be removed. Cancel or move every subscription using that card first, then remove it at pay.google.com.
Where is the billing page for Google AI Pro?
There is not one inside Gemini. Google says a Google AI plan is bought through Google One, so billing lives in Google One settings, reached from gemini.google.com under Settings & help, then Manage subscription.
Does removing my card cancel Google AI Pro?
No, and Google usually will not let you remove it while the plan is live. Cancel the membership first through Google One, then remove the card. Removing a card on its own would leave the plan trying to renew.
I removed the card and was charged anyway. How?
Almost always a backup payment method on a Google Play subscription, which Google charges when the primary one fails. Open Subscriptions on Google Play, click Manage next to the subscription, and clear the backup payment method.
Is the card the same one Google Play uses?
Usually yes. Google Play, Google One and the payments centre all read from the same set of payment methods on your Google account, which is why removing one card affects every Google purchase rather than only the AI plan.
What if I subscribed inside the Gemini app on my phone?
Then Apple or Google Play holds the card and Google One will hand you back to the store. Google says the app you originally subscribed from opens to complete any change, and on iPhone that means your subscriptions in Apple settings.
