What payment methods does Gemini accept?
Gemini takes whatever your Google account can pay with. Google's Gemini help says "You can subscribe to a Google AI plan through Google One," and Google One's change your card steps send you to My subscriptions in Google Play, even on a computer.
So the real list lives on Google Play's country pages. We read them on 11 October 2026 and counted every way to pay that Google doesn't rule out for a subscription.
Google One's own list is shorter. It names a credit card, PayPal, a bank account (US only) and "Google Play balance (Selected countries/regions only)". Claude's website takes cards only, as our Claude payment methods page shows. And chatgpt.com adds a second method in just seven regions, per our ChatGPT payment methods page. Google's list is wider in every Asian market we checked. There's one catch. For most wallets, Google says you can use them "to buy apps and digital content" and doesn't say subscriptions. So the checkout screen has the final word.
South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia get 8 ways to pay, and India and Taiwan get 3
Google Play lists 8 ways to pay in South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia, 7 in Japan and Vietnam, and 3 in India and Taiwan, as of 11 October 2026. The last column below is what Google itself says can't pay for a subscription.
| Country | Ways to pay Google Play lists | What Google says can't pay a subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB), PayPay, Merpay, Edy, PayPal, phone bill (docomo, au, SoftBank, Rakuten), Play balance | Cash at Daily Yamazaki, FamilyMart, SeicoMart and Lawson |
| South Korea | Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Diners and 16 Korean issuers), KakaoPay, Naver Pay, Toss, PAYCO, KCP bank account, phone bill (KT, LG U+, SKT), Play balance | Nothing named beyond some carriers |
| Taiwan | Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), PayPal, phone bill (Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone, Taiwan Mobile, T Star) | Convenience store and ATM codes through E.SUN |
| Thailand | Cards (incl. JCB and UnionPay), TrueMoney, LINE Pay, ShopeePay, PromptPay, PayPal, phone bill (AIS, DTAC, TrueMove H), Play balance | Nothing named beyond some carriers |
| Vietnam | Cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Napas), MoMo, ZaloPay, ShopeePay, VTC Pay, phone bill (MobiFone, Vinaphone), Play balance | Nothing named beyond some carriers |
| India | Visa, Mastercard, UPI, Play balance | RuPay cards (one-time purchases only) |
| Indonesia | Cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB), GoPay, OVO, Dana, ShopeePay, Doku, phone bill (Telkomsel, Indosat, XL/AXIS, Tri, Smartfren), Play balance | Cash, virtual account bank transfer, QRIS |
| Philippines | Cards (incl. Discover, JCB, UnionPay), GCash, PayMaya, ShopeePay, PayPal, phone bill (Dito, Smart, Sun) | Cash at 7-Eleven and ECPay; Globe billing for new subscriptions |
| United States | Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, JCB), PayPal, Venmo, Cash App Pay, Google Pay balance, Play balance | US Cellular, since 29 January 2026 |
Every country page that offers phone billing carries the same warning: "Some mobile phone carriers can't be used to pay for subscriptions." Google adds that carrier billing works only in the Play Store app, never on the Play website in a computer or phone browser, and that it doesn't work on a rooted phone or with some prepaid numbers. So if you subscribe on gemini.google.com in a browser, don't expect a phone bill option.
India is the one market where Google names Google One outright. Its UPI entry reads: "You can make recurring payments with UPI Autopay through a mandate. For example, you can do this for monthly subscription payments for Youtube Premium, Google One, and others." Brazil comes close, since Google says PIX can "auto-renew subscriptions on Google Play." Only the UPI line names Google One.
Can you pay for Gemini with PayPal?
Yes, where Google Play takes PayPal. Google One names PayPal for its memberships. Google Play lists it in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, the US, the UK and Brazil, as of 11 October 2026. It isn't on Google Play's list for South Korea, Vietnam, India or Indonesia.
That makes Gemini the easy PayPal pick of the big three. Claude's website doesn't take PayPal at all, and chatgpt.com doesn't list it either. One setup trap: if you've turned on PayPal Security Key, Google says you have to add PayPal in a web browser. The Play Store app can't link it.
Can you pay for Gemini with a Google Play gift card?
Yes in Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, where both of Google's pages say Play balance pays for subscriptions. In the US, India, Indonesia and Brazil, Google contradicts itself. Each of those country pages on Google Play says balance can "Pay for subscriptions on Google Play." But Google's Play balance page, the one Google One links to as "the list of countries that supports Play balance as a payment method for subscriptions," lists only apps, books, movies and Newsstand there. Subscriptions aren't on it. Both can't be right.
The same page carries a warning that fits a Google AI plan: "Some subscriptions do not accept Stored Value." So a gift card is a fair bet in Japan or Vietnam and a gamble in the US or India. Try it well before a renewal date.
The balance page adds two more limits. Balance only buys things priced in its own currency, so a US gift card can't pay for a plan billed in yen. And Play gift cards and prepaid balance expired in Malaysia on 1 February 2026 and in Singapore on 1 February 2025. Thailand's country page says Play gift cards went off sale there on 1 August 2021, though old balance still spends.
In Japan, Google also lets you top up balance with cash at a convenience store. Right under that option it says: "Currently, you can't use cash to pay for subscriptions." So buy a gift card instead of loading cash.
Which payment methods can't pay for a Gemini plan?
Convenience store cash can't, in every country where Google spells it out: Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines and Mexico. Taiwan's convenience store and ATM codes through E.SUN don't support subscriptions either. Indonesia adds virtual account bank transfers and QRIS codes to the list. Brazil's page lets cash top up Play balance and doesn't say whether that balance then pays a plan.
Some cards and carriers are out too:
- RuPay cards in India pay for one-time purchases only, and Google dropped Netbanking there from October 2025.
- Globe billing in the Philippines hasn't taken new Play subscriptions since 8 July 2024.
- US Cellular stopped working on Google Play on 29 January 2026.
- Virtual credit cards don't work on Google Play in any country we checked, and the US, Japan, Korea and India pages also rule out wire transfers, Western Union and transit cards.
Prepaid cards sit in a gap. Google's pages don't name them as accepted or refused. If your prepaid card is a virtual one, though, Google's ban on virtual credit cards covers it. A card with a debit or credit logo from your bank is the option Google documents.
Can you pay for Gemini with PayPay, MoMo or a phone bill on iPhone?
Yes, if you subscribe in the Gemini iPhone app. Apple then bills the plan through your Apple Account. Apple's payment methods page, published 7 August 2026, lists these. The prices are what the App Store showed for Google AI Pro inside the Gemini app on 11 October 2026.
| Country | What Apple lists | Google AI Pro in the App Store |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Cards, PayPay, Merpay, Apple Pay, phone bill (au, NTT DOCOMO, SoftBank), Apple Account balance | ¥2,900 |
| South Korea | Cards, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Toss Pay, phone bill (KT, LG U+, SK Telecom) | ₩29,000 |
| Taiwan | Cards, JKOPay, Apple Pay, phone bill (Chunghwa Telecom, FET, Taiwan Mobile), Apple Account balance | NT$650 |
| Thailand | Cards, TrueMoney, ShopeePay, phone bill (AIS, dtac, TrueMove) | ฿750 |
| Vietnam | Cards, MoMo, ZaloPay, VNPAY, ShopeePay, Apple Account balance | 489.000đ |
| India | Visa, Mastercard, UPI, Apple Account balance | ₹1,950 |
| United States | Cards, Apple Pay, Apple Card, Apple Cash, PayPal, Apple Account balance | $19.99 |
Apple adds no subscription warning to these wallets, which makes the iPhone the surer route for PayPay or MoMo. The catch is in Google's help. If you already have a Google One plan, "the app you originally subscribed to Google One from will open to complete the upgrade." A plan started on the web stays on Google billing, and an Apple plan stays with Apple. Cancelling follows the same split, as our Google AI Pro cancellation guide shows.
A third route skips both stores. Google lets phone carriers sell Google One plans "as part of a bundle or billed separately by that provider", per its third-party plans page. In Japan, au sells Google AI Pro and adds it to your au phone charges, per its page dated 1 October 2026. With a carrier plan, Google says you change or cancel it through the carrier.
How do you change the payment method for Google AI Pro?
You change it in Google Play, not in Gemini. These are Google One's steps for a computer:
- Go to Google One and click Settings.
- Click Change payment method.
- In Google Play, on the left, click My subscriptions.
- Next to Google One, click Manage.
- Next to Primary payment method, click Update, then pick a method and follow the steps.
Your first saved method has to be a card. Google's account help says: "Your first payment method must be a credit or debit card." After that you can add others. Removing the old card is its own job. A Google product expert says a card that still pays an active subscription can't come off, and how to remove a card from Gemini walks through it.
If Google refuses every method you try, the block may be your payments profile. Google says you can't change the country on an existing profile, so a move abroad means a new profile. For a plain bank refusal, our card declined guide sorts the codes by who can fix them.
- Check whether Google, Apple or your phone carrier bills your Gemini plan before you change anything
- Find your country in Google Play's list and skip cash, QRIS and convenience store codes
- Use a Play gift card only where both Google pages say balance pays subscriptions, such as Japan or Vietnam
- For PayPay, MoMo or Kakao Pay without doubt, subscribe in the Gemini iPhone app
- Change the method in Google Play under My subscriptions, Google One, Manage, then Update
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Gemini with Apple Pay or Google Pay?
Apple Pay works only through the Gemini iPhone app, in countries where Apple lists it, such as Japan, Taiwan and the US. Google Pay isn't a separate method. Google One's help keeps your payment methods in Google Pay, so a card saved there is already on your Google account. In the US, Google Play also takes a Google Pay balance.
Why won't Google take my payment for Gemini?
Usually the method can't pay a subscription, or your bank refused it. Google says convenience store cash, QRIS and E.SUN store codes can't pay a subscription. Google's regional restrictions page says to try another method, and to create a new payments profile if you've moved country, since an existing profile's country can't be changed.
Does Whizi take PayPal or PayPay?
Not on whizi.io. Whizi's Terms list Visa, Mastercard and American Express, and website plans are processed by Stripe. A plan bought inside the Whizi mobile app is processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play, per the same Terms, so the store's own methods apply there. What Whizi offers instead is Gemini beside Claude and GPT on one Pro plan.
