Seven regions get a second way to pay, and the rest pay by card
Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam all have ChatGPT priced in their own currency, and all four still pay by card only on chatgpt.com. OpenAI's Multi-currency billing article, updated on 8 October 2026, names a second method for just seven regions. None of those four is on it.
Four of the seven come with plan limits, and each bills in its own currency. This is OpenAI's list for chatgpt.com as of 8 October 2026.
| Region | Extra method | Plans OpenAI names | Billed in |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Korea | Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, local cards | Subscription checkout, no plan limit stated | KRW |
| United States | ChatGPT wallet balance | USD charges on the website, eligible accounts | USD |
| UK and EEA | Bank debit via Link, where supported | No plan limit stated | GBP, EUR, PLN, SEK and others |
| India | UPI | Go and Plus, not Pro or Business | INR |
| Indonesia | GoPay | Go, Plus and Pro | IDR |
| Brazil | Pix | Go, Plus and Pro | BRL |
| Philippines | GCash | Go, Plus and Pro | PHP |
Cards cover every plan. If you're buying Pro in India, or Business in Indonesia, Brazil or the Philippines, plan on a card.
PayPal and PayPay reach ChatGPT only through the App Store or Google Play
PayPal and PayPay aren't on OpenAI's list, and neither are Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. The way in is the app. Subscribe inside the ChatGPT app on an iPhone or an Android phone and Apple or Google bills you, using whatever your store account can pay with. OpenAI's billing article says so in its first note: app subscriptions are managed by the App Store or Google Play and charged in your local currency.
PayPay is the clearest case. PayPay said in a May 2023 announcement that its more than 57 million users could link the wallet to an Apple ID and pay for apps and in-app purchases. Apple's payment methods page still lists PayPay for Japan, and Google's Play payment list names it for Japan too.
PayPal depends on the store and the country. Apple lists it for Apple Accounts in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France and Australia, among others. It doesn't list it in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India or Brazil. Google Play lists PayPal in the US, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and Brazil. In Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and India, neither store takes it.
Here are the methods each route lists in ten markets, read from OpenAI's, Apple's and Google's pages on 8 October 2026.
| Market | chatgpt.com | iPhone app (Apple Account) | Android app (Google Play) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | Cards | Cards, PayPay, Merpay, Apple Pay, carrier billing, Apple Account balance | Cards, PayPay, Merpay, Edy, PayPal, carrier billing, Play balance |
| South Korea | Cards, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, local cards | Cards, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Toss Pay, carrier billing | Cards, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Toss, KCP bank account, carrier billing, Play balance |
| Taiwan | Cards | Cards, JKOPay, Apple Pay, carrier billing, Apple Account balance | Cards, PayPal, carrier billing |
| Thailand | Cards | Cards, TrueMoney, ShopeePay, carrier billing | Cards, TrueMoney, LINE Pay, ShopeePay, PayPal, carrier billing, Play balance |
| Vietnam | Cards | Cards, MoMo, ZaloPay, VNPAY, ShopeePay, Apple Account balance | Cards, MoMo, ZaloPay, ShopeePay, VTC Pay, carrier billing, Play balance |

| Philippines | Cards, GCash | Cards, GCash, ShopeePay, carrier billing | Cards, GCash, Maya, ShopeePay, PayPal, carrier billing |
| India | Cards, UPI | Visa, Mastercard, UPI, Apple Account balance | Visa, Mastercard, UPI, Play balance |
| Brazil | Cards, Pix | Credit cards, Apple Pay, Apple Account balance | Credit cards, Pix, PicPay, Mercado Pago, PayPal, Play balance |
| United States | Cards, ChatGPT wallet balance | Cards, Apple Pay, Apple Card, Apple Cash, PayPal, Apple Account balance | Cards, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App Pay, Google Pay balance, Play balance |
We left out cash, convenience store codes, bank transfer and QR payments, Thailand's PromptPay among them. Google says those can't pay for a subscription in Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines, and gives no subscription rule for PromptPay. Google also warns that some carriers can't bill a subscription at all. So treat carrier billing as a maybe until the store's checkout shows it.
For Japan the choice is simple. Pay by card on chatgpt.com if you want OpenAI's own billing page and a downloadable ChatGPT invoice for each charge. Subscribe in the app if you want PayPay, Merpay or your phone bill.
App store billing moves cancelling, refunds and receipts to Apple or Google
Paying through the app changes who you deal with for the life of the plan. OpenAI's cancellation article says to cancel where you bought: chatgpt.com in Settings, then Billing, an App Store plan in your Apple subscriptions, a Play plan in Google Play. Uninstalling the app cancels nothing. Deleting your ChatGPT account doesn't cancel an Apple subscription either.
Refunds split by store. OpenAI takes refund requests for web and Google Play plans, and Apple handles its own. Receipts follow the same line: OpenAI says App Store and Google Play receipts won't show up in ChatGPT's invoice history, so you'll find them in the store's purchase history. Our ChatGPT Plus cancellation guide has the clicks for all three routes.
UPI, GoPay, Pix and GCash cover fewer plans than a card
A card pays for any ChatGPT plan, but UPI, GoPay, Pix and GCash don't. Claude has no such list at all, as our Claude payment methods page shows: its web checkout takes cards only. OpenAI lists UPI for Go and Plus and says it isn't offered for Pro or Business at this time. It lists GoPay, Pix and GCash for Go, Plus and Pro, and doesn't name Business for any of them. If Go or Plus is the real question, ChatGPT Go vs Plus settles it before you pick a wallet.
If GoPay is refused at checkout, both app stores take GoPay in Indonesia. That's a second route with a different biller. The same goes for GCash in the Philippines and UPI in India, where Google says UPI can pay for subscriptions. Pix is the odd one. Google Play takes it for auto-renewing subscriptions, and Apple's Brazil list doesn't include it. For a refusal with no reason given, our declined payment guide covers the bank side.
How do you change your payment method in ChatGPT?
On chatgpt.com you add the new method first, then make it the default. Open Settings, then Billing, and scroll to Payment methods. We checked the panel on 8 October 2026, and it carries an Add new button and the card list. Add the card, open its menu (labelled Open payment method actions) and choose Set as default. The old card can then go, and our card removal guide covers that step.
An app subscription changes somewhere else. Apple keeps the method in your Apple Account and Google keeps it in Google Play, and ChatGPT never sees either. To move from the app to the web, cancel the store plan, let it run out, then subscribe on chatgpt.com. That route is closed for Pro 20X while OpenAI has new Pro $200 subscriptions paused.
ChatGPT bills in 67 currencies, and a plan keeps the one it started in
OpenAI's list runs to 67 currencies as of 8 October 2026, from AED to ZAR, with JPY, KRW, TWD, THB, VND, IDR, PHP, INR and BRL among them. An active plan doesn't switch, though. OpenAI says you'll keep paying in your current currency, and moving to a newly supported one means cancelling and subscribing again once the paid period ends. One exception sits in the same answer: while new Pro $200 (Pro 20X) subscriptions are paused, a Pro 20X plan you cancel can't be bought again.
Two smaller rules sit in the same article. Buyers in the EEA may get a Strong Customer Authentication prompt at purchase or renewal. And API credits are sold in USD only, whatever currency your ChatGPT plan uses.
Can you pay for ChatGPT without a credit card?
Yes. A debit card counts, since OpenAI lists credit and debit cards for every country. The seven regional methods need no credit card either. In the US, a ChatGPT wallet balance can cover USD charges on the website, and OpenAI sells gift cards for it in the US only, in USD.
Outside those, the app stores are the card-free route: a store balance from a gift card, carrier billing, or a local wallet from the table above. On the web, OpenAI's decline article adds one rule. The card must come from a bank in a country OpenAI supports. None of the three vendors' lists names crypto. And if you only want to try ChatGPT, the free tier asks for no card, which our card-free guide checks across the big four.
- Check whether OpenAI, Apple or Google bills you before you change anything
- On chatgpt.com, add the new method first, then set it as the default
- In India, plan on a card for Pro or Business, since UPI stops at Plus
- Subscribe in the app for PayPal, PayPay or carrier billing only where your store lists them, since neither store takes PayPal in Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam or India
- To change billing currency, cancel and resubscribe after the paid period ends
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for ChatGPT with PayPal?
Not on chatgpt.com, because PayPal isn't on OpenAI's list of payment methods. You can use PayPal by subscribing in the ChatGPT app where your store takes it. Apple lists PayPal in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia among others, and Google Play lists it in the US, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and Brazil.
Can I pay for ChatGPT with PayPay?
Only through the app. PayPay isn't on OpenAI's list for chatgpt.com, but Apple lists it as an Apple Account payment method in Japan, so a plan bought in the iPhone app can be paid with PayPay. Google Play lists PayPay for apps and digital content in Japan but doesn't say whether it pays subscriptions, so check the Play checkout. Either way, you'll cancel it in the store, not in ChatGPT.
Can I pay for ChatGPT with Apple Pay or Google Pay?
OpenAI's list for chatgpt.com names neither, so plan on a card there. In the app it's different: Apple lists Apple Pay as an Apple Account method in Japan, Taiwan, Brazil and the US, and Google Play in the US takes a Google Pay balance.
Why was my ChatGPT payment not approved?
Usually your bank or wallet refused it, and OpenAI says it typically doesn't receive detailed decline reasons, so the bank is the fastest place to ask. Check that the card comes from a country OpenAI supports and that the method covers your plan, since UPI stops at Plus. If GoPay or GCash keeps failing, both app stores take them.
