How much does ChatGPT Plus cost in each country?
On chatgpt.com, Hungary pays $10.08 a month more than the Philippines, and $3.98 of that is tax. The other $6.10 is OpenAI charging Hungary more before tax. The chart shows eight of the most searched markets, before and after tax, in US dollars at the European Central Bank's 9 October 2026 rates.
OpenAI's pre-tax price runs from $15.63 in the Philippines to $22.64 in Malaysia. India sits at $17.51 and Hungary at $21.73. Tax then decides the top spot. A Hungarian pays $5.86 of VAT on every month of Plus, a Filipino $1.88. Without VAT, Hungary would rank below the UK, Switzerland and Malaysia. An American on chatgpt.com pays $20 plus any state sales tax.
The table is every App Store storefront we read on 11 October 2026, ranked by its price in US dollars. Apple's ChatGPT listing is the one public page that shows each country's price without a login. Its prices include tax everywhere but the US and Canada, so those two rows read low. The chatgpt.com column comes from the pricing data OpenAI's pricing page loads for each country.

Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Greece match Germany: €22.99 in the App Store and €23 on chatgpt.com. Pakistan and Nigeria stay in local currency. The ECB doesn't quote the rupee or the naira, and we added a central bank's rate for two currencies only. Vietnam uses the State Bank of Vietnam's 9 October rate of ₫25,629 to the dollar. Taiwan uses its central bank's 8 October close of NT$31.875.
Why is ChatGPT Plus more expensive in Europe?
Value-added tax makes it more expensive. Before tax, OpenAI asks about as much in Europe as in Asia: $21.66 in Germany, $22.04 in the UK, $19.65 in South Korea. VAT in the EU countries we read runs from 19% in Germany to 25% in Denmark and Sweden and 27% in Hungary. Norway also charges 25%. Switzerland is the exception at 8.1%, and its pre-tax $22.26 is one of the highest in the table.
Apple puts the rule in one line in its developer talk on App Store pricing: "Prices advertised to customers in all countries except the U.S. and Canada include taxes." So $19.99 in New York and £19.99 in London aren't the same kind of price. The London one already has 20% VAT inside it. The New York one gets sales tax added on top.
Inside the euro area, OpenAI charges one price and swallows the difference. Every euro country we checked pays €23 a month on chatgpt.com. OpenAI's own data then gives a different pre-tax amount for each: €19.33 in Germany, €19.17 in France, €19.01 in Spain, €18.85 in Italy and €18.55 in Greece. That's 78 cents a month less for OpenAI from a Greek subscriber than from a German one.
Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper in the app or on chatgpt.com?
In most countries the app and the website charge the same: ₩29,000 in South Korea, ¥3,000 in Japan, ₹1,999 in India, Rp349,000 in Indonesia, ฿699 in Thailand and NT$690 in Taiwan. Six markets differ by more than a rounding cent.
The app is cheaper in Vietnam (₫499,000 against ₫522,500 on the web) and the Philippines (₱999 against ₱1,100). It's cheaper in Pakistan too, where Apple asks Rs 4,900 with tax and chatgpt.com Rs 5,700 before it. The app costs more in Ukraine and Kenya. Apple charges US$22.99 there, and chatgpt.com charges $20 before tax. Turkey is the odd one. Apple bills ₺999.99 in lira, while chatgpt.com quotes Turkish accounts $20 in US dollars before tax.
OpenAI's multi-currency billing article draws the line between the two: "If you subscribe via the ChatGPT app on iOS or Android, your subscription is managed by the Apple App Store or Google Play and charges will appear in your local currency." On the web, the same article lists 67 currencies OpenAI can bill in. Local payment methods are a separate list, covered in ChatGPT payment methods by country. We didn't check Google Play, so its prices may differ from both columns.
Which countries can't buy ChatGPT Plus?
China, Russia and Hong Kong can't buy it through either channel. Apple has no ChatGPT listing in any of the three, and the cn, ru and hk links return a 404. None of them is on OpenAI's supported countries list. The pricing data behind chatgpt.com covers 234 countries and territories and has no entry for them. Iran, Belarus, Cuba, Syria, North Korea, Venezuela and Macau are missing from it too.
OpenAI warns on that list that using ChatGPT from outside it "may result in your account being blocked or suspended." If you're in one of these places, ChatGPT not available in your country covers the options. Bangladesh is a different case. OpenAI supports it, and chatgpt.com quotes it $20 in US dollars before tax. Apple's bd link opens the US listing, though, so we couldn't read a local App Store price there.
How were these prices read?
Whizi Research read each App Store price from Apple's public ChatGPT listing on 11 October 2026, one storefront at a time. Hungary's, for example, is apps.apple.com/hu/app/chatgpt/id6448311069. Most storefronts show two ChatGPT Plus lines. We used the lower one, the monthly price. The other matches what chatgpt.com charges for Pro in most countries we compared: $200 in the US, HUF 89,990 in Hungary and ₱9,990 in the Philippines.
Dollar figures use the ECB's euro reference rates of 9 October 2026, crossed through its dollar rate of 1.1206 and rounded to the cent. The chatgpt.com prices and tax rates come from the per-country data OpenAI's pricing page loads, read the same day. Prices can change without notice. A promotion can also lower what you see at checkout, so check your own country's listing before you pay.
- Open apps.apple.com/<country code>/app/chatgpt/id6448311069 and read the ChatGPT Plus line under In-App Purchases
- Compare it with the price chatgpt.com shows at checkout while you are signed in
- Check whether the web price includes VAT or GST before you compare the two
- Pay through whichever channel is cheaper once tax is counted
