ChatGPT Go vs Plus: which one you actually need

The short answer

ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US and sits between Free and Plus at $20. It launched in India in August 2025, went worldwide on 16 January 2026, and is priced locally in most markets, so the number at checkout may not be $8. Go is the right call when your only complaint about the free plan is a feature cap: images, file uploads, voice. Plus is the right call the moment you need deep research at a real volume, agent style tasks, custom GPTs you build yourself, the deeper reasoning modes, or a window with no ads in it.

What changed the comparison is OpenAI's 6 August 2026 announcement. Free and Go accounts got unlimited everyday text chat the following week, subject to abuse guardrails, and both moved to GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model. Plus and Pro moved to GPT-5.6 Sol the same day. TechCrunch reported it that afternoon and OpenAI's pricing page now lists everyday text chat as unlimited on every tier. So the old framing of Go as "more messages than free" is dead. Go is now "more images, uploads, and voice than free," and Plus is "a different model plus the tools Go does not carry."

Prices, caps, and model names on any AI plan change without notice. Every figure below is dated, attributed, and current as of September 2026. Confirm it against the plan comparison inside your own ChatGPT account before you pay, because that screen is the only version guaranteed to describe your account.

What each tier includes now

Free runs GPT-5.6 Luna with unlimited text chat, a Think button that OpenAI added in August 2026 for harder questions, small daily allowances for image generation and file uploads (roughly two or three images a day per September 2026 comparisons), limited deep research, and ads in the countries where OpenAI is testing them.

Go runs the same GPT-5.6 Luna with the same unlimited text chat. What it raises is the feature allowances: OpenAI describes Go as roughly ten times the free tier on messages, file uploads, and image generation, and since messages are now unlimited everywhere, the practical part of that multiplier is uploads and images. Go also carries longer memory than Free. It does not add the deeper reasoning modes, agent tasks across devices, or custom GPT creation; deep research stays at the free tier's limited allowance; OpenAI's own Go plan card says the plan "may include ads"; and new models reach Go after Plus.

Plus is a different product rather than a bigger Go. It runs GPT-5.6 Sol as the default with a thinking slider that trades speed for reasoning depth, expanded deep research, agent mode across devices, custom GPT creation, expanded Codex usage, image generation reported at around 40 to 50 per three-hour window, priority access when demand spikes, first access to new models, and no ads. OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Sol made factual errors 68% less often than the GPT-5.5 Instant it replaced, against 62% for Luna, so the two tiers are no longer the same model with different caps.

The rows above come from OpenAI's own plan card wording where it is public (unlimited text, "may include ads," Go at roughly 10x Free) and from a 6 September 2026 plan comparison by The AI Career Lab for the per-feature allowances, cross-checked against the 6 August TechCrunch report for the model assignments. OpenAI's help center blocks automated fetching, so where a row says "expanded" rather than a number, OpenAI itself does not publish the number.

Two rows decide most purchases. Deep research is limited on Free and Go alike and only expands at Plus, so paying $8 does not buy you research runs. Custom GPT creation starts at Plus; Go can use GPTs other people published but cannot build one. If either of those is why you are upgrading, Go is the wrong tier at any price.

Three things people still get wrong about Go

Go does not give you more chat than Free anymore. Before August 2026, Go's pitch was a bigger message cap. That cap is gone on both tiers. If your problem was hitting a text limit on Free, that problem solved itself for $0, and Go should be judged purely on images, uploads, voice, and memory.

Go runs the free tier's model. Free and Go both default to GPT-5.6 Luna; Plus and Pro default to GPT-5.6 Sol. On the Whizi cost index, one standard answer (1,000 input and 500 output tokens at list rates fetched 20 August 2026) costs $0.0008 from Luna and $0.01 from Sol, a 12x gap that is a fair proxy for how much more compute Plus gives you per reply. For quick questions you will not notice. For a long document, a plan, or code, you will.

Ads are a Go feature, not a Free-only one. OpenAI began testing ads on Free and Go in the US in February 2026 and had expanded the test to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea by 13 August 2026. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education do not show ads. If a paid tier that still shows ads bothers you on principle, that alone is the $12 difference.

Who each tier actually suits

Go fits you if you mostly chat, you generate images or upload files often enough to hit Free's daily allowance, you do not need deep research or agent tasks, and an occasional ad is an acceptable trade for $12 a month less than Plus.

Plus fits you if you want GPT-5.6 Sol and its thinking slider on everyday work, you run deep research for real reports, you want the model to execute multi-step tasks on its own, you build custom GPTs, or you want an ad-free product. Neither fits you if you use ChatGPT a few times a week for text. Since August 2026, Free covers that completely, and the honest move is to stay on Free until a feature cap, not a message cap, actually interrupts you. Where Go is sold and what it costs there

Go started in India in August 2025 at a low local price, spread to around 170 more countries over the following months, and on 16 January 2026 OpenAI made it available everywhere ChatGPT is. Pricing is localized: $8 in the US, adjusted for purchasing power and currency elsewhere, the same approach OpenAI already used for Plus. Check the price shown when you sign in rather than assuming the US figure.

Both tiers are limited to the countries where OpenAI operates, and that is a location restriction rather than a payment problem: a different card will not change the outcome. How switching between Go and Plus works

Moving down from Plus to Go is a scheduled change: in the web app, profile icon, then Settings, then Subscription, then select Go as your next plan. Your Plus access runs until the billing period you already paid for ends, and Go starts on the next billing date. OpenAI does not refund the unused portion of a downgrade, so there is no financial reason to schedule it early in a cycle, and no cost to scheduling it early either. If you subscribed through the iOS or Android app, the change happens in your phone's subscription settings, not inside ChatGPT.

Moving up from Go to Plus, most people subscribe to Plus directly rather than waiting for a period boundary, since the point of upgrading is usually that Go is not covering something right now.
