What are the ChatGPT Go limits, one by one?
ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US against $20 for Plus, and the table below sets 14 of its limits beside both plans. We compiled it on 18 October 2026 from OpenAI's pricing page and four help center articles, each named in the sources below. The words in quotes are OpenAI's own, and "no count" marks a row where OpenAI gives Go a feature but no number.
| Limit | Free | Go ($8) | Plus ($20) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday text chat | Unlimited, "subject to abuse guardrails" | Unlimited, same guardrails | Unlimited |
| Instant context window | 27K tokens (about 12 pages) | 54K tokens (about 40 pages) | 54K tokens |
| Reasoning context window | "Varies" | 256K tokens (about 320 pages) | 256K tokens |
| Voice | "Limited access" to GPT-Live-1.1 Quip | 3 hours per rolling 24 hours, GPT-Live-1.1 Quip | 3 hours, GPT-Live-1.1 |
| File upload rate | 3 files a day | 80 files every 3 hours, OpenAI's cap for all users | 80 every 3 hours; card says "Expanded" uploads |
| Files per project | 5 | 25 | 25 |
| Library storage | 500 MB | 4 GB | 20 GB |
| Image generation | "Limited" | "Yes", no count | "Yes", no count |
| Data analysis | "Limited" | "Yes", no count | "Yes" |
| Vision (reading your images) | "Limited" | "Yes", no count | "Yes" |
| Deep research | "Limited" | "Limited", no count | "Expanded deep research" |
| Codex | "Limited" | "Limited", "lightweight coding tasks" | "Expanded Codex usage" |
| ChatGPT Work | "Limited (desktop app)" | "Limited (desktop app)" | Desktop, web and mobile |
| Memory | "Limited" | "Yes"; card says "Longer memory" | "Expanded" |
The seven rows with words and no number include the three that run out mid task: images, deep research and Codex. OpenAI's Go plan card says "More image creation", "More uploads" and "Longer memory" without saying more than what. The rows with a number are mostly sizes, not counts. They tell you how long a document can be, but not how many times a day you can ask about it.
How many images can ChatGPT Go generate per day?
OpenAI doesn't publish a daily image count for ChatGPT Go, or for Free, Plus or Pro. The pricing table moves image generation from "Limited" on Free to "Yes" on Go. OpenAI's Go help article promises "Extended access to image generation" and it stops there.
The counts you'll find online are user reports. A roundup by AIFreeAPI, published on 2 October 2026, collected reports from 10 to 20 images a day up to 120, and the 120 is a single Reddit comment. It labels the often repeated 20 to 30 a day a community estimate, not a quota. Neither of them is OpenAI's. Your own limit message is the only count that applies to you, because it prints its own countdown.
Two things from OpenAI set the edges of the wall. ChatGPT Images 2.5 shipped on 8 September 2026, and OpenAI's release notes for that day say "Existing image-generation limits are unchanged." Go also misses one image row that Plus gets: image generation with Thinking. Plus's card adds "More complex and accurate image creation", and Pro's says "Unlimited and faster image creation". The full plan by plan picture, with the limit messages people see, is in ChatGPT image generation limit.
Does ChatGPT Go have a message limit?
No, ChatGPT Go has no limit on everyday text chat, as long as you stay inside OpenAI's abuse guardrails. OpenAI announced the change on 6 August 2026 for Free and Go together. Its release note said "Limits will still apply for file uploads, images and other tools." That's why Go's card says "More messages with tools", not more messages.
Go runs on the same model as Free. OpenAI's release notes for 7 October 2026 say "Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna," with Free and Go switched over a day later. The Think button, added for Free and Go in August 2026, gives Luna harder questions on the 256K reasoning window. Go has no access to GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra or the legacy models. All of them start at Plus.
Plus is the only one of the three plans with a printed message range, and it's for Codex. OpenAI's Codex pricing page estimates 350 to 3,000 local messages per five hours on GPT-6 Luna for Plus, or 15 to 160 on GPT-6.1 Sol, and calls those estimates, not fixed limits. Go's entry on the same page reads "Use Codex for lightweight coding tasks", with no number.
What is the ChatGPT Go file upload limit?
ChatGPT Go can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours, which is OpenAI's general cap for all users, against 3 files a day on Free. Both figures come from OpenAI's File Uploads FAQ. The FAQ gives no separate Go rate. It also warns that OpenAI may lower the limits at peak times, and ChatGPT doesn't show how much of the rolling quota you have left.
File sizes are the same on every plan:
- Documents and presentations: 512 MB per file, and text files are capped at 2 million tokens.
- Spreadsheets and CSV files: about 50 MB, depending on row size.
- Images you upload: 20 MB each.
- Projects: 25 files per project on Go and Plus, 5 on Free and 40 on Pro.
Storage is the one place Go sits clearly between the two. OpenAI's Library article says "Go users have up to 4 GB of Library storage." Free gets 500 MB and Plus 20 GB. The uploads FAQ gives a different ceiling, 25 GB of shared upload storage per user, so trust the Storage button in your Library.
How much context and memory does ChatGPT Go get?
ChatGPT Go gets a 54K token context window in Instant mode and 256K when it reasons, the same as Plus. Free gets 27K in Instant, and OpenAI lists its reasoning window as "Varies". The pricing page turns those into the most you can paste: about 12 pages of text on Free and about 40 on Go in Instant, and about 320 on Go when it reasons.
Those page counts are already smaller than the window. A footnote on the pricing page says "The portion available for user input is smaller than the total window," because the system instructions and your saved memories share it. OpenAI calls the page figures an approximation. So for a file near 40 pages, switch on Think and use the bigger window.
Memory is one of the rows with no number. Go gets "Yes" for memory and for memory with past chats, where Free gets "Limited" on both. Plus gets "Expanded". OpenAI's Memory FAQ gives no capacity for saved memories on any plan, and says only that memory features vary by plan.
What are the ChatGPT Go voice, deep research and Codex limits?
ChatGPT Go voice is 3 hours with GPT-Live-1.1 Quip in any rolling 24 hours, per OpenAI's Voice FAQ as read on 18 October 2026. Plus gets the same 3 hours on the full GPT-Live-1.1, and Free gets "Limited access" with no number. The 9 September 2026 release note gave Go "Up to 3 hours with GPT-Live-1 mini", the model name before the update. When you hit the limit, ChatGPT tells you, and you can carry on in text.
Deep research on Go is "Limited", the same word Free gets, and OpenAI prints no count for either. Its deep research FAQ says "Your in-product usage counter shows your remaining tasks." A fixed allowance resets every 30 days from your first use. ChatGPT deep research limit has the counts OpenAI last printed in 2025.
Codex and ChatGPT Work are both limited on Go. Work runs only in the desktop app, and Codex on Go is GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, "subject to rollout". Plus opens Work on the web and on mobile, and expands Codex.
Where do OpenAI's own ChatGPT Go pages disagree?
OpenAI's "What is ChatGPT Go?" article contradicts three other OpenAI pages, read on 18 October 2026. Each one changes what you should expect:
| Topic | What the Go help article says | What other OpenAI pages say |
|---|---|---|
| Voice | "Voice mode is included with the same usage limits as the Free tier." | Voice FAQ: Go gets 3 hours in 24; Free gets "Limited access" |
| Ads | "We may start testing ads in ChatGPT Go in the future." | Ads article: "Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans," with testing since 9 February 2026 |
| Model | "Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna." | Release notes, 7 October 2026: Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna |
In each row, the other page is the one to trust, because OpenAI's pricing page sides with it. The pricing page marks Go's voice "Expanded" over Free, says the Go plan "may include ads", and lists GPT-6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Luna, for Go. The Go article's own stamp read "Updated: 6 days ago" on 18 October 2026, so OpenAI edited it after the 7 October switch to GPT-6 Luna and still left all three lines in place. If your plan screen shows something else again, believe the screen.
Does ChatGPT Go have ads, and what does Go not include?
Yes, ChatGPT Go can show ads. It's the only paid ChatGPT plan that does. OpenAI's ads article says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu "will not have ads." It also says ads "do not influence ChatGPT's answers," and Temporary Chats show none. Free users can pick an Ads-Free mode, which "comes with lower usage limits and reduced feature access." Go has no such mode. How to remove ads from ChatGPT covers every route.
What Go doesn't include, as of October 2026:
- Models: GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra and the legacy models.
- Images: image generation with Thinking.
- Tools: Sites, interactive tables and charts, developer mode, and full Codex or Work.
- Tasks: tasks triggered by a webhook. Go can schedule ordinary tasks, and OpenAI's 25 August 2026 release note gives Free up to three active ones too, but says Free and Go "cannot create webhook-triggered tasks."
- Billing: annual plans. OpenAI says it doesn't support "annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance."
Moving down from Plus to Go isn't refunded. Your Plus plan stays active until the billing cycle ends, then Go starts. How to downgrade ChatGPT Plus has the clicks.
Which plan gives you a number you can plan around?
If your work stops at a Go wall with no number on it, Plus at $20 raises most of them and still prints few numbers. ChatGPT Plus limits goes through them row by row. If deep research, Codex or GPT-6 Sol is the reason, Go is the wrong plan at any price, since all three stay "Limited" or locked until Plus.
Whizi Pro prints its image allowance: 100 image generations a month for $29.99, on Whizi Image, Nano Banana, Flux and Stable Diffusion, beside 2,500 credits on GPT, Claude and Gemini. That's nearly four times Go's price, and Whizi Starter at $15.99 makes no images at all. So if you want ChatGPT's pictures for as little as possible, Go is the better buy. Whizi fits the reader who needs a count to plan a month of images around.
- Hit an image wall on Go: read the countdown in the limit message, since OpenAI prints no daily count
- Long document cut short: switch on Think, which uses the 256K reasoning window instead of the 54K Instant one
- Upload refused: wait out the rolling 3 hour window; Go's cap is OpenAI's general 80 files every 3 hours
- Need deep research, Codex or GPT-6 Sol: Go keeps all three at Free's level, so look at Plus
- Ads bother you: Go has no Ads-Free mode; Plus and above show none
- Confirm every limit on the plan screen inside your own account before you pay
Frequently asked questions
How many images can you generate with ChatGPT Go per day?
OpenAI publishes no daily image count for ChatGPT Go as of October 2026. Its pricing table lists image generation as "Yes" on Go and "Limited" on Free, with no number on either. User reports collected by AIFreeAPI, a third party, in October 2026 run from 10 to 120 images a day, and none of those counts come from OpenAI. Your limit message shows your own reset time. ChatGPT image generation limit explains the countdowns.
Does ChatGPT Go have unlimited messages?
Yes, for everyday text chat, subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails. OpenAI made text chat unlimited on Free and Go in August 2026, and both now run GPT-6 Luna. Uploads, images, voice, deep research and Codex keep their own limits. ChatGPT Go vs Plus covers what the $12 step up adds.
What is the ChatGPT Go context window?
ChatGPT Go has a 54K token context window in Instant mode and 256K in reasoning mode, the same as Plus. OpenAI puts those at about 40 and about 320 pages of text. Free gets 27K in Instant. To check how many tokens a document uses before you paste it, run it through the Whizi tokenizer.
Does ChatGPT Go have ads?
Yes. OpenAI's ads article says "Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans," and testing began in the US on 9 February 2026. Free has an Ads-Free mode with lower limits, and Go doesn't. Plus and every higher plan show no ads. ChatGPT free vs paid sets the three plans side by side.
