How to downgrade ChatGPT Plus to Go, to free, or from Pro to Plus

In brief

Downgrade ChatGPT Plus to free under Settings, Billing, Cancel plan; Plus runs to the end of the paid period and your chats stay. Downgrade to Go from your profile icon, where OpenAI's Go article points at Upgrade Plan or Settings, Account; the switch starts when the cycle ends. Nothing is refunded, and app store subscriptions change in the store.

The Billing panel has Cancel and Renew, and no downgrade control

Start with what the screen actually shows, because most downgrade guides describe a control that is not there. Opened live on 2 September 2026 on a Plus account, chatgpt.com Settings has a Billing entry, not "Subscription" and not "My plan", and it opens a panel inside ChatGPT rather than an external portal.

That panel has four regions: the plan card, a Transaction history list, Billing information, and Payment methods. On an active plan the card offers Cancel plan. On a plan already cancelled it offers Renew Plus Plan and a line like "You'll continue to have access to ChatGPT Plus until Sep 7, 2026." There is no tier picker in it.

OpenAI also publishes no help centre article on downgrading. Search its help site for the word and nothing comes back on the subject. So a "downgrade" in ChatGPT is one of three separate actions, and the honest version of this guide is three procedures rather than one button.

This page has no chart because there is no measured difference to draw: the three moves differ in path and timing, not in a number.

Plus to Go is a scheduled switch, and nothing comes back

OpenAI's ChatGPT Go article, read on 22 September 2026, sets the rule for a Plus or Pro subscriber who switches: "Your current plan will remain active until the end of your billing cycle. At that time, your account will switch to Go, and you will be charged the Go rate moving forward." The answer to "Will I be refunded" on the same page is one word: "No."

Where the switch lives, by the same article: existing subscribers go to profile icon, Settings, Account to "manage or change" the subscription, and new subscribers go to profile icon, Upgrade Plan, Try Go. On the Plus account we opened on 2 September, Settings, Account held name, email and Delete account, and the plan card sat under Billing with Cancel plan as its only control. So if neither place offers Go on your account, the fallback is to cancel Plus and pick Try Go under Upgrade Plan once it lapses.

Two consequences. There is no financial reason to wait until the last day of a cycle to schedule the switch, and no cost to scheduling it early, because Plus runs to its end date either way. And if you subscribed through Apple, OpenAI says Apple manages the subscription, so the Go switch is made in iOS Settings under Subscriptions, not on chatgpt.com.

Go itself, from OpenAI's article: $8 a month, unlimited everyday text chat, higher limits than free on image generation, file uploads and data analysis, Think on GPT-5.6 Luna but no GPT-5.6 Sol, access to projects, tasks and custom GPTs "subject to current feature availability", voice at the free tier's limits, and OpenAI says it may test ads in Go. Deep research stays at the free cap. ChatGPT Go vs Plus is the line by line comparison, and it is the page to read before you schedule, because the difference is mostly in the model and what you upload rather than what you type.

Plus to free is a cancellation, and the chats stay

OpenAI's cancellation article gives the web path: Settings, then Billing, then under Cancel plan select Cancel. Do it at least 24 hours before the next billing date. You keep Plus until the period you paid for ends, and the plan card switches to showing that date.

What does not change: your conversations, your memory, your custom instructions and your projects all stay on the account. The free tier reads the same history. What changes is the ceiling on uploads, image generation, deep research and voice, and the models on offer. Do you lose your chats when you cancel ChatGPT Plus covers the retention question in full, and how to cancel ChatGPT Plus covers the store paths.

One more OpenAI line worth keeping: "If you only want to stop future charges, you do not need to delete your ChatGPT account." A cancellation is enough. Deletion is a different and permanent action.

Pro to Plus has no article, so here is what is verifiable

Pro comes in two tiers, $100 a month at roughly five times Plus usage since 9 April 2026 and $200 at roughly twenty times, and OpenAI paused new $200 sign ups on 10 September 2026. Moving down from either is the most expensive downgrade in the product, and OpenAI documents it least.

What is verifiable: OpenAI's Go article says Plus and Pro subscribers can move down to Go on the same end of cycle basis, and points them at profile icon, Settings, Account. The Billing panel on the Plus account we opened had no tier switch of any kind, so on a Pro account expect the same: choose the lower plan if Settings, Account or Upgrade Plan lists it, and if neither does, cancel Pro and subscribe to Plus once Pro lapses.

Either way the unused Pro time is not refunded, and a $200 subscriber who drops to Plus cannot currently move back up, because the $200 tier is closed to new sign ups and upgrades. ChatGPT Plus vs Pro covers who the tiers are for and what the pause means.

What a refund on a downgrade actually looks like

OpenAI's refund article, updated the day before we read it on 2 September 2026, is the only place a downgrade turns into money. "Accidental purchases are generally eligible for a refund if you contact us within 14 days of the charge." The request runs through the chat widget at help.openai.com, signed in as the charged account, and OpenAI quotes 5 to 7 business days for a web purchase and 10 for a Google Play one. The EU, UK and Turkey get a prorated refund on cancellation within 14 days of purchase; South Korea gets 7 days unused or a prorated refund from the request date.

A downgrade scheduled halfway through a cycle is not an accidental purchase, so the normal outcome is the one already stated: you keep the higher plan to its end date, and the lower price starts after. The full fork by biller is in getting a refund on an AI subscription.

If the downgrade is really about which model you get

Most people downgrading Plus want to keep a strong model and drop a $20 bill they use twice a week. Go keeps the everyday model. Free keeps it with lower caps. Neither gives you a second model family.

Whizi is the third option: GPT-5.6 Sol at 20 credits a message and Claude Sonnet 5 at 10 sit on its Pro plan next to Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek, $29.99 a month or $19.99 billed yearly, and the Starter plan at $15.99 carries ChatGPT Luna and Gemini Flash with 600 credits a month. The honest losses against Plus: no ChatGPT agent mode, no Codex, no custom GPTs, and image generation is a separate allowance. Whizi vs ChatGPT Plus sets both columns out.

The decision rule: downgrade to Go if uploads and images are what you pay for, cancel to free if you rarely hit a cap, and look elsewhere if what you want is a different model on the same bill.

Workflow checklist
  • Open Settings, then Billing, and confirm which plan and end date the card shows
  • Schedule a Go switch from your profile icon, under Settings, Account or Upgrade Plan; it starts at the end of the paid cycle
  • Use Cancel plan for a move to free, at least 24 hours before the next charge
  • Change an app store subscription in iOS Settings or the Play Store, not on chatgpt.com
  • Ask for a refund only on an accidental purchase inside 14 days; a mid cycle downgrade refunds nothing
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I downgrade ChatGPT Plus to free?

Cancel it. Open Settings, then Billing, and under Cancel plan choose Cancel, at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Plus stays active until the end of the period you paid for, then the account returns to the free tier with all chats, memory and projects intact.

How do I switch from ChatGPT Plus to ChatGPT Go?

From your profile icon: OpenAI's Go article points existing subscribers at Settings, Account, and new ones at Upgrade Plan, Try Go. OpenAI keeps Plus active until the end of the current billing cycle, then switches the account to Go at $8 a month. The unused portion of Plus is not refunded. If Apple or Google billed you, make the change in the store.

Can I downgrade from ChatGPT Pro to Plus?

OpenAI publishes no article on it. Select Plus under Settings, Account or Upgrade Plan if it is offered; otherwise cancel Pro under Settings, Billing and subscribe to Plus once Pro lapses. The unused Pro time is not refunded, and the $200 tier has been closed to new sign ups since 10 September 2026, so a downgrade from it cannot currently be reversed.

Do I lose my chats if I downgrade ChatGPT?

No. Conversations, memory, custom instructions and projects stay on the account on every tier. What changes is the limits on uploads, images, deep research and voice, and which models you can pick.

Will OpenAI refund the rest of my month if I downgrade?

No. A scheduled downgrade keeps the higher plan to the end of the cycle and starts the lower price after it. Refunds are for accidental purchases within 14 days of the charge, through the help.openai.com chat widget, plus the statutory rights in the EU, UK, Turkey and South Korea.
