ChatGPT Plus limits: all 13 caps compared with Free, Go and Pro, and the 4 with no published number

In brief

ChatGPT Plus limits, as of October 2026: unlimited text chats, 3 hours of Live voice per rolling 24 hours, 80 file uploads every 3 hours, a 54K Instant and 256K Thinking context window, and 15 to 150 GPT-6 Sol messages per five hours in Codex. OpenAI prints no number for Plus Thinking, images, deep research or memory.

What are the ChatGPT Plus limits, cap by cap?

ChatGPT Plus has 13 metered allowances, and OpenAI gives a number for 9 of them. We built the table below on 18 October 2026 from OpenAI's pricing page and from the help center articles that are linked in the sources. We counted a cell as a number when OpenAI states a figure or says that it is "unlimited". When all it says is "Limited", "Expanded" or "Maximum", we counted it as no number. The 13 leave out the text chat, GPT-6 Pro and Sora rows, since none of them meters anything on Plus. The prices are what OpenAI charges in the US for its personal plans.

An asterisk is OpenAI's own footnote, which says that your usage "must be reasonable and comply with our policies." Why are there no numbers on four of the Plus rows? OpenAI's What is ChatGPT Plus page gives the reason in its own words: "Plus subscriptions may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand. These limits may vary based on system conditions."

How many messages does ChatGPT Plus get per day?

ChatGPT Plus has no daily message cap for everyday text chats, which OpenAI lists as unlimited on every plan as of October 2026, subject to abuse guardrails. Free and Go joined Plus there in August 2026. The cap that you actually run into on Plus is the one for Thinking. When you pick Medium or High in the model menu, you spend an allowance that OpenAI doesn't put a number on anywhere. Its GPT-6 help page, updated in October 2026, says only: "If you reach a Thinking limit, ChatGPT may continue with another available model."

There used to be a number. OpenAI's release notes of 12 August 2025 gave Plus "3,000 messages/week with GPT-5 Thinking", with a 196K token context. Some of the limit pages that rank for this query still repeat it. But it was the cap for GPT-5 Thinking, a model that the menu has replaced several times since then. GPT-6 is the one that took over for Plus on 7 October 2026. The old number didn't carry over.

Three things changed for Plus this autumn. The first is that GPT-6 Sol now runs Instant, Medium and High for you, while Extra High and the Pro setting are kept for the Pro plans. The second came on 14 September 2026, when OpenAI stopped moving Plus chats from Instant to Thinking on its own. If you leave a chat on Instant, it stays there. The third is about what you see at the wall. ChatGPT shows you when the cap resets "when that information is available", and it won't always be. OpenAI Support can't reset it for you, either. The help page says so.

If a message fails with some other wording, you've hit a different limit. ChatGPT says I've reached my limit sorts out the three walls that look alike.

What are the ChatGPT Plus limits in Codex and ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT Plus meters Codex and ChatGPT Work out of one shared pool that runs on two clocks, a five-hour window and a weekly cap, and you need room in both of them to keep going. OpenAI's Astra usage guide gives Plus these estimates for local messages per five hours, read 18 October 2026:

Model in Work or CodexPlus, local messages per five hours
GPT-6 Astra5 to 45
GPT-6 Sol15 to 150
GPT-6.1 Sol15 to 160
GPT-6 Luna350 to 3,000

OpenAI calls these "estimates, not guaranteed message counts". A task that you run in the cloud can use more of the pool than one you run on your own computer. If you turn on Fast mode, it spends the pool at 2.5 times the Standard rate, per About ChatGPT Pro tiers, and Plus can't use Ultrafast at all. You get only "limited" use of Astra on Plus. A new five-hour window starts with the first Work or Codex message you send after the last one has ended. On all three Pro plans there is no five-hour limit.

When the pool runs dry, you can buy credits, which OpenAI says are valid for 12 months. In some billing countries you can also buy an instant reset, but that moves your weekly date. Excel, PowerPoint and Word take from the same pool as Codex. Chat, voice, images and uploads don't, because their limits are separate, and the Codex banner won't tell you about them. Codex usage limit covers the Codex side in full.

When do ChatGPT Plus limits reset?

ChatGPT Plus limits reset on five different clocks, and only two of them show you a counter. Here's each one, from OpenAI's help center as of October 2026:

  1. File uploads: a rolling 3 hours, 80 files per window. OpenAI says ChatGPT "does not currently show how much of your rolling upload-rate quota has been used or remains."
  2. Live voice: a rolling 24 hours, 3 hours of GPT-Live-1.1 per window. Since 9 September 2026 Plus no longer switches to GPT-Live mini when it reaches the cap.
  3. Work and Codex: five hours from your first message, plus a weekly period. Settings, then Usage, shows both reset times.
  4. Deep research: every 30 days from the date of your first task. The in-product counter is the one that shows what's left.
  5. Thinking and images: no published period. ChatGPT shows the reset time in the limit message when it has one.

OpenAI gives Plus no deep research task count as of October 2026, only the word "Expanded" on its pricing card. ChatGPT deep research limit traces the last count that it printed. The image counter is just as quiet. OpenAI's Codex help page quotes two Chat banners, "50 images in the last day" and "resets in 720 hours", only to say those limits don't apply to Codex. Neither is a published Plus cap, and ChatGPT image generation limit collects the waits users report.

What does Plus get that Go doesn't, and what does Pro add?

ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Go print the same number on six of the rows: 54K tokens of Instant context, 256K of Thinking context, 80 uploads every 3 hours, 512 MB a file, 25 files in a project and 3 hours of Live voice a day. What the extra $12 a month buys is better models, more than it is bigger caps. On Plus you get Medium and High Thinking on GPT-6 Sol, while the Think button on Go runs on Luna, which OpenAI calls the lowest cost model in its family. You get the full voice model instead of the Quip one, and 20 GB of storage instead of 4 GB. You also get two more scheduled tasks, Work on the web and on your phone, and a Codex allowance with a printed number. Go's pricing card adds that the plan "may include ads". ChatGPT Go limits goes through that plan row by row.

Pro at $100 is where the numbers start to grow. Its Instant context is more than twice as big, at 128K, and its Thinking context goes up to 400K. Each of its projects can hold 40 files. You also get 100 GB of storage, 15 hours of voice a day and 15 scheduled tasks, and there is no five-hour window in Codex. On Pro $200 the voice is unlimited. Neither prints a Thinking number. GPT-6 Pro "has usage limits", OpenAI says, and a Pro subscription "does not include unlimited use" of it. ChatGPT Plus vs Pro works out who needs the jump. Uploads stop at 512 MB a file on all four plans, which ChatGPT file upload limit sets out.

Is there a plan that prints a GPT-6 Sol message count?

No personal ChatGPT plan prints a GPT-6 Sol message count for Chat, as of October 2026. The nearest that OpenAI comes is ChatGPT Business. It prints 15 Pro messages a month on a Standard seat, for the two Pro models together, and it leaves Thinking without a number there too.

Whizi Pro prints its own number. It is $29.99 a month for 2,500 credits, and ChatGPT Sol is 10 credits a message, so that's 250 Sol messages a month, with Claude, Gemini and the rest of 280+ models on the same bill (how Whizi credits work). It loses to Plus on the rest. You get 80 voice minutes a month on Whizi Pro, where Plus gives you 3 hours a day, and 100 images a month, and there is no Codex. Pick it if you want to see the count before you hit the wall. Don't pick it if your day runs on voice or on coding agents.

Workflow checklist
  • Wall on Thinking: switch to Instant, which has no cap on Plus, or wait for the reset time in the message
  • Codex or Work stopped: open Settings, then Usage, to see whether the five-hour or the weekly window ran out
  • Upload refused after few uploads: failed attempts can count toward the 80 every 3 hours, so wait out the window
  • Voice call ended: the cap is 3 hours per rolling 24 hours on Plus, and text chat keeps working
  • Deep research counter at zero: it refills 30 days after your first task, not on your billing date
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Plus unlimited?

Only for everyday text chats on Instant, which OpenAI calls unlimited "subject to abuse guardrails" as of October 2026. Thinking, images, deep research, voice, uploads, and Work and Codex all have caps. OpenAI gives numbers for voice (3 hours a day), uploads (80 every 3 hours) and Codex (15 to 150 GPT-6 Sol messages per five hours), but not for Thinking or images. What to do when ChatGPT says you've reached your limit covers each wall.

How many images can ChatGPT Plus make per day?

OpenAI doesn't say. Its pricing page lists Plus image creation with no figure, Free as "Limited" and Pro as "Unlimited", as of October 2026. OpenAI's Codex help page quotes "50 images in the last day" as an example Chat banner, but that's a banner's wording, not a published Plus cap. ChatGPT image generation limit collects the waits users report.

Does the ChatGPT Plus limit reset every 3 hours?

Only for file uploads, which refill on a rolling 3 hour window at 80 files. Voice resets over a rolling 24 hours, Work and Codex every five hours plus weekly, and deep research every 30 days from your first task. The "every 3 hours" message caps that older pages quote belong to older models, not GPT-6. Text chat on Instant has no cap on Plus as of October 2026. ChatGPT Plus vs Pro shows which clocks Pro removes.

Are ChatGPT Plus limits higher than Claude Pro's?

For text chat, yes. Plus has no cap on Instant chats, while Anthropic's help center says paid Claude plans count every message against a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit. Neither company prints a message count for its reasoning models, so it's worth comparing them by the task you do. Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus sets the two side by side.
