ChatGPT file upload limit by plan: 512 MB a file, 3 a day on Free, and the fix for each wall

In brief

ChatGPT's file upload limit is 512 MB per file on every plan, with Free held to 3 uploads a day and other plans to 80 files every 3 hours, per OpenAI's help center in September 2026. Free's 500 MB of Library storage is smaller than one file at that maximum; Plus gets 20 GB and Pro 100 GB.

Which ChatGPT upload limit did you hit?

The wording on screen names the cap that stopped you. ChatGPT has five: a rolling upload count, Library storage, a size limit per file, a 2 million token limit per document, and a file limit per Project. Each wall has its own fix. The table gives the one that works in the next minute, from OpenAI's help center as of October 2026.

What you seeThe cap behind itThe fix in the next minute
"upload limit reached", or "You've reached your file upload limit. Try again later"The rolling count: 3 a day on Free, 80 files every 3 hours on other plansPaste the text into the message instead of attaching the file; on a paid plan, capacity returns as uploads from three hours ago age out
An error that a storage cap has been hit (OpenAI does not print the wording)Library storage: 500 MB Free, 4 GB Go, 20 GB Plus, 100 GB ProDelete old files in Library, not the chats that hold them, or attach the file in a Temporary Chat, whose files are not saved to Library
A big file will not uploadSize: 512 MB for any file, about 50 MB for a spreadsheet or CSV, 20 MB for an imageSave the part you need as .txt or .csv, cut the spreadsheet to the columns you need, or resize the image
A long document uploads, but answers miss its later chapters2 million tokens per document, or a context window much smaller than the fileSplit it and ask about one section per chat
A Project will not take another file5 files on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, 40 on ProMerge related files into one before adding them
"Unable to upload [file name].pdf" on a small fileUsually no cap at all: forum users saw it on a 2 MB PDF during a May 2024 faultCheck status.openai.com, then retry in another browser

Two lines in OpenAI's File Uploads FAQ save the most time. Failed attempts "can sometimes count toward the upload-rate cap", so retrying a stuck file ten times spends the allowance you meant to use. And storage is shared "across chats, Projects, and custom GPT knowledge", so a GPT you built last year can be what filled it. Deleting the chat doesn't help: OpenAI's Library page says "Deleting a chat containing files does not delete those files saved to Library." Open Library, press Storage to see whether you're over the limit, and delete the file there.

What is the ChatGPT file upload limit per day on Free, Go, Plus and Pro?

Free is limited to 3 file uploads a day, and every other ChatGPT user to 80 files every 3 hours. That's at most 640 uploads in 24 hours, 213 times the Free allowance. Those are the only two counts OpenAI publishes. The ChatGPT pricing page says only that Go gets "More uploads" and Plus "Expanded messages and uploads". The FAQ adds that OpenAI "may lower these limits during peak hours". Storage, Project size and the context window do change by plan:

The Free row is the odd one. A single file can be 512 MB, but a Free account's whole Library holds 500 MB. The largest file ChatGPT accepts doesn't fit in the storage Free gets. OpenAI's own pages also disagree on storage. The File Uploads FAQ, updated in September 2026, still says "Each end-user is capped at 25GB". The Library page, updated in August 2026, gives the four plan figures above. The Storage button in Library shows the figure your account actually has. The 80 file count is the FAQ's general cap. OpenAI doesn't list it plan by plan. No screen shows how much of the count is left. In OpenAI's words, "ChatGPT does not currently show how much of your rolling upload-rate quota has been used or how much remains."

How big a file can you upload to ChatGPT?

512 MB is the hard cap for any file on every ChatGPT plan, and three kinds of file hit a lower cap first. A spreadsheet or CSV "cannot exceed approximately 50MB, depending on the size of each row". An image stops at 20 MB. A PDF, Word or text file stops at 2 million tokens, about 3,000 pages if you use Google's yardstick of 1,500 pages per million tokens. Spreadsheets are exempt from the token cap.

Getting a file accepted is a different question from having it read. GPT Instant on Free holds 27K tokens at once, about 40 pages on the same yardstick. A document 74 times that size can upload cleanly and still be read only in pieces. On every plan except Enterprise, OpenAI says document files get "text-based retrieval". ChatGPT extracts the text, pulls the passages your question needs, and discards the images. So a chart inside a PDF is invisible unless you upload it as a picture. What is a context window explains the window itself, and how to summarize a PDF with AI gives the section by section method that works around it.

How do ChatGPT's upload limits compare with Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity?

ChatGPT accepts the largest single file of the five, 512 MB against 500 MB on Claude, 100 MB on Gemini and 50 MB on Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. It's also the only one that publishes an upload count per day or per hour. We read each vendor's own help page on 3 October 2026, and OpenAI's help pages through archive.org copies dated August and September 2026, because help.openai.com refuses automated reads.

AssistantLargest single fileFiles at onceCount per day or hourMessage at the wall

Three rows deserve a second look. Claude's upload page gives 500 MB in a chat, but inside a Project the cap drops to 30 MB a file. Only PDFs of 100 pages or fewer get their charts and images read. Gemini's upload page gives 100 MB a file. If you don't have a plan, though, the reading window is the tighter limit. Google lists 32K tokens free, 128K on AI Plus and 1 million on AI Pro and AI Ultra. Microsoft's Copilot page counts 20 files per conversation, so a long Copilot thread can run out of attachments before any file comes near 50 MB. For a 200 page report, a 1 million token window matters more than any byte cap in the table.

How do you get around the ChatGPT file upload limit?

You get around it by sending fewer, smaller and plainer files, because both the count and the size caps are per file. In order of how fast each one works:

  1. Paste the text. Text typed or pasted into the message is a message, not a file upload, so it costs nothing against Free's 3 a day; the context window still applies.
  2. Merge before you upload. Ten short PDFs combined into one file are one upload, not ten.
  3. Strip the file to what the question needs. Save a PDF as .txt, delete the spreadsheet tabs and columns you will not ask about, and export images at a lower resolution to get under 50 MB and 20 MB.
  4. Reuse instead of uploading again. A file already in Library can be attached with Add from library, and a Project keeps its files for every chat inside it. OpenAI does not say whether reattaching counts against the rolling cap.
  5. Split what is too long to read. A 400 page contract goes in as four parts, one per chat, with the same question asked of each.

If the daily count is the wall and your documents are text, a second app with its own meter is the other route. Whizi, which publishes this page, takes up to 6 files per message on the website at up to 100 MB each. In the app it takes 4 per prompt, at 10 MB each and 20 MB together. It counts the text it extracts from documents against a 100,000 character cap per message. Past that, it sends the first part with a notice instead of refusing the file. Uploading costs no credits. Where it loses: attachments need a paid plan, so there's no free daily allowance at all. And a 50 MB spreadsheet that ChatGPT takes whole won't fit in one message's 100,000 characters. Every cap with its error message is listed in why a file upload failed.

Workflow checklist
  • Read the message first: "upload limit reached" is the count, a storage error is Library, a failed big file is size
  • On Free, paste the text instead of attaching once the 3 daily uploads are gone
  • Free up storage by deleting files in Library; deleting the chat leaves the file there
  • Keep spreadsheets under about 50 MB, images under 20 MB and every file under 512 MB
  • Stop retrying a failed upload: failed attempts can count toward the cap
  • Split documents longer than the context window and ask about one section per chat
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the ChatGPT file upload limit reset?

Yes. On paid plans the count is a rolling window of 80 files every 3 hours, so capacity comes back as uploads from three hours earlier age out. On Free the allowance is 3 uploads a day. OpenAI doesn't publish the time Free's day resets, and ChatGPT shows no counter of what's left. Storage doesn't reset at all. It frees up only when you delete files from Library.

How many files can you upload to ChatGPT for free?

Three a day. A Free account also gets 500 MB of Library storage, 5 files per Project and the same 512 MB cap per file as paid plans. OpenAI says it may lower upload limits during peak hours.

What is the ChatGPT Plus file upload limit?

Plus allows 80 files every 3 hours, 512 MB per file, 20 GB of Library storage and 25 files per Project, as of October 2026. Pro raises storage to 100 GB and Projects to 40 files but keeps the same 512 MB cap per file and the same published upload count.

Why does ChatGPT say upload limit reached when I have barely uploaded anything?

Because failed upload attempts can count toward the cap, and storage is shared across chats, Projects and the knowledge files of GPTs you built. OpenAI's own steps: confirm you're signed in to the right account and plan, and check status.openai.com for an incident. If it persists, send support a screenshot with the time and time zone.
