What are the ChatGPT Pro limits on each tier?
ChatGPT Pro comes in three tiers, and the main thing that changes between them is the allowance in Codex and ChatGPT Work. We built this table on 25 October 2026 from OpenAI's pricing page, its About ChatGPT Pro tiers page and the help articles in the sources. Where OpenAI writes "Pro" with no tier, the figure is the same on all three. Prices are in US dollars before tax.

The asterisk is OpenAI's footnote: "Usage must be reasonable and comply with our policies." OpenAI's help pages don't print the multiples, so we took each one from where OpenAI did state it. Its release notes of 9 April 2026 launched Pro 100 with a "5X standard usage allowance" in Codex, boosted to up to 10x "for a limited time". We found no later OpenAI page that restates the Pro 100 figure. Its DevDay recap of 29 September put Pro 500 "at 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance". The 10x for Pro 200 comes from OpenAI's notice to Pro 200 subscribers, as one of them posted it, and from Engadget and TheNextWeb's DevDay reports. Divide each price by its multiple and you get the chart's other number. Once the cut lands, every tier costs $20 per Plus allowance, the price of Plus itself. Pro buys room, not a discount.
How many GPT-6 Pro messages does ChatGPT Pro get?
ChatGPT Pro 200 gets 100 GPT-6 Pro messages a week from 30 October 2026, down from 200. No OpenAI help page prints that count. It comes from the notice a Pro 200 subscriber posted to OpenAI's community forum on 30 September as the text of OpenAI's email: "Your GPT-6 Pro limit in Chat will decrease from 200 to 100 messages per week." We can't see the original email. Engadget and TheNextWeb reported the same two numbers from DevDay on 29 September.
Pro 100 gets no number at all. OpenAI's GPT-6 help page, read on 25 October 2026, says the two Pro models "draw from one weekly allowance" on that tier, so switching between them won't buy more messages. Its blunt line covers every tier: "A Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model."
What happens at the wall depends on the tier. On Pro 200, the help page says that at the weekly cap "ChatGPT automatically switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium." The older Pro model is still there if you pick it by hand, but only while its own daily allowance lasts. Nothing about your plan changes when you hit a cap. You wait for the reset time ChatGPT shows, or you use another model.
What changes for ChatGPT Pro 200 on 30 October?
ChatGPT Pro 200 halves on 30 October 2026 for the accounts that kept the old allowance: Work and Codex go from 20x Plus to 10x, and GPT-6 Pro from 200 to 100 messages a week. The price stays $200. OpenAI's Pro tiers page sets the line. You're grandfathered if you held Pro 200 "at any point from September 22, 2026 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026", and you keep the old allowance "through October 29, 2026".
Anyone who signed up after that window is already on the lower figure. OpenAI reopened Pro 200 to new buyers on 29 September with what it calls "a lower usage allowance than previously offered". Keeping the old allowance doesn't turn Pro 200 into Pro 500, either. Ultrafast stays a Pro 500 feature, and OpenAI says buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 "does not unlock" it.
Two promises came with the cut, both reported by TheNextWeb from OpenAI's statement. Grandfathered subscribers get a one time grant of usage credits worth $2,500, which expire at the end of the year. And OpenAI said it won't bring back Pro 200's five hour limit. If 10x isn't enough, Pro 500 at $500 is the only tier above it.
Does ChatGPT Pro have a five hour limit in Codex?
No. ChatGPT Pro has no five hour window in Codex or ChatGPT Work on any of its three tiers, while Plus does. OpenAI's Codex pricing page says "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit," and then adds the catch: "Weekly limits may also apply." Work, Codex, ChatGPT for Excel, Word and PowerPoint all spend that one pool.
Speed modes spend it faster. Fast mode uses your allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate. Ultrafast, on Pro 500 only, runs GPT-6 Astra and the newest Sol at 8 times the rate, then bills purchased credits at 6 times. A Pro 500 subscriber who leaves Ultrafast on all week can burn through 25x Plus about as fast as a Standard user burns through 3x. Image generation inside Codex counts too, at "~3-5x faster on average" than a turn without one.
When the pool runs dry you can buy credits in Settings, then Usage, and keep working. OpenAI Support can't reset the limit for you. Its Pro page says so in plain words: "Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits." Codex usage limit covers the five hour and weekly clocks on Plus in full.
Is ChatGPT Pro unlimited?
ChatGPT Pro is unlimited for three things only: everyday text chats, image generation and, on Pro 200, Live voice. Each one carries OpenAI's abuse footnote. Everything else on Pro has a cap, even where OpenAI won't print a number for it.
The capped list is longer than people expect. GPT-6 Pro has a weekly limit. Deep research is "Maximum" on the pricing page, with no task count, and its help page says the counter "resets every 30 days from the date of your first use." File uploads stop at 80 every 3 hours on every plan, per OpenAI's upload page, which adds that OpenAI "may lower these limits during peak hours." Voice on Pro 100 stops at 15 hours in a rolling day, per the voice page. That page has no row for Pro 500 at all.
Pro does lift several Plus ceilings. The Instant context window more than doubles, from 54K to 128K tokens, and Thinking goes from 256K to 400K. Library storage grows from 20 GB to 100 GB, per OpenAI's storage page. Projects hold 40 files instead of 25, and you can keep 15 scheduled tasks active instead of 5. None of these change between Pro 100 and Pro 500. ChatGPT Plus limits has the same rows for Plus, Go and Free.
When do ChatGPT Pro limits reset?
ChatGPT Pro limits reset on five different clocks, and only some of them show you a timer. Here's each one, from OpenAI's help center as of 25 October 2026:
- GPT-6 Pro in Chat: weekly. ChatGPT shows the reset time "when that information is available".
- The older Pro model on Pro 200: a daily allowance, plus a combined daily allowance.
- Work and Codex: no five hour window, but weekly limits "may also apply". Settings, then Usage, shows what's left.
- Live voice and uploads: a rolling 24 hours for voice and a rolling 3 hours for uploads. ChatGPT doesn't show how much of the upload quota you've used.
- Deep research: every 30 days from your first task, on the in product counter.
The 30 October change isn't a reset. It's a new, lower ceiling. If your Pro 200 week runs over that date, expect the allowance to shrink partway through it. Plan for that now.
Is there a cheaper way to get a GPT message count you can see?
Whizi, which publishes this page, prints a price per message instead of a weekly mystery. Whizi Powerhouse is $49.99 a month for 10,000 credits, and GPT-6 Astra (the model behind GPT-6 Pro) costs 100 credits a message there. Whizi Pro is $29.99 for 2,500 credits, with Claude, Gemini and the rest of 280+ models on the same bill. Credits per message vary by model and can change (how Whizi credits work). It loses to ChatGPT Pro on most of this table. There's no Codex, no Dots and no unlimited voice, and every Whizi plan stops at 60 messages an hour. Pick it if you want the count before you send. Stay on Pro if your week runs on coding agents.
Frequently asked questions
How many messages can you send on ChatGPT Pro?
Unlimited everyday text chats, subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails, as of October 2026. The caps sit on GPT-6 Pro (100 a week on Pro 200 from 30 October) and on Work and Codex, where Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 get 5x, 10x and 25x the Plus allowance. ChatGPT Plus vs Pro works out which tier your week needs.
Does ChatGPT Pro have a weekly limit?
Yes, for GPT-6 Pro in Chat and possibly for Codex. OpenAI's help center calls the GPT-6 Pro allowance weekly on Pro 100 and Pro 200, and its Codex page says "Weekly limits may also apply" even though Pro has no five hour window. If a model is greyed out, ChatGPT says I've reached my limit sorts out which wall you hit.
Is ChatGPT Pro 200 still worth it after 30 October?
Only if you need unlimited Live voice, the one Chat limit where OpenAI's help pages put Pro 200 above Pro 100. From 30 October Pro 200 costs $20 per Plus allowance in Codex and Work, the same as Pro 100 and Pro 500, so it stops being the volume deal it was. Compare it with Anthropic's $200 plan in Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro before you renew.
How do I stop ChatGPT Pro from renewing after the cut?
Cancel through the place you subscribed: ChatGPT on the web, Apple or Google Play. OpenAI says you keep Pro until the end of the billing period, and canceling doesn't refund earlier charges. If you also want your payment details gone, how to remove a card from ChatGPT walks through it.
