Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro: Opus scores 58 to Astra's 53, and both run on the $20 plans

In brief

Claude Max wins for coding and for long documents. ChatGPT Pro wins for images, deep research and the Dot agent. Both sell $100 and $200 tiers as of 11 October 2026. Claude Opus 5.5 scores 58 on Artificial Analysis to GPT-6 Astra's 53, and both of those models also run on the $20 plans.

Both sell $100 and $200 tiers, but they meter them differently

Anthropic sells Claude Max at $100 a month for the 5x tier and $200 for the 20x one, and it only bills monthly. OpenAI sells ChatGPT Pro at $100 and $200, and since its DevDay on 29 September 2026 it has sold a $500 tier as well. We built the table below from each vendor's own pricing and help pages, which we read on 11 October 2026. The two 30 October figures come from Engadget and TheNextWeb, because OpenAI's own pages give no multiple or date for that cut.

Two of these rows decide most purchases. The first one is the clock. Anthropic's help center says that "Max 20x includes 20 times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance", and the session resets every five hours, with a weekly limit across all of the models on top of it. OpenAI's Codex pricing page says "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit." So you can spend a ChatGPT Pro allowance at any pace you like within the week. On Max, if you drain a session, you wait for it to roll over.

The second one is the $200 row. Engadget and TheNextWeb both report that the $200 tier of ChatGPT Pro falls from 20 times Plus to 10 times in Codex and Work, and that GPT-6 Pro in chat drops from 200 messages a week to 100. TheNextWeb dates the cut to 30 October 2026. If you were subscribed at any point between 22 and 29 September, OpenAI's help center says you keep the old allowance until 29 October. After that, Claude Max 20x is the only one of the two $200 plans that is still sold as 20 times its $20 sibling.

Claude Max carries the top benchmark model, and so does the $20 Claude Pro

Claude Opus 5.5 is the top model on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.3.2. It scored 58 points and sat first of 227 models when we read it on 11 October 2026. Of the models that ChatGPT Pro carries, the best one on the index is GPT-6 Astra, and it scores 53. Both of these scores are at the highest effort setting that Artificial Analysis tests.

Neither of the top models needs the top tier. Anthropic's pricing page lists Opus on Claude Pro, which is $20 a month. OpenAI's help center says that "Plus plans include GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex." So the $100 to $200 mostly adds volume. It also adds two things the index doesn't measure: GPT-6 Pro, which is the extra compute mode of Astra that OpenAI keeps for its Pro plans, and Claude Fable on the Max weekly allowance. Artificial Analysis doesn't list GPT-6 Pro, so there's no independent score that separates it from plain Astra yet.

Speed favors Claude too, at least through the API. On the same 11 October read, Artificial Analysis clocks Opus 5.5 at 97 output tokens a second and GPT-6 Astra at 63.3. It lists the API price of Opus at $4 in and $20 out per million tokens, and the price of Astra at $10 and $50. OpenAI's answer to that gap is Ultrafast. Only the $500 tier has it.

Is Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro better for coding?

Claude Max is the better coding plan for most developers, and there are three sourced reasons for it. Opus scores five points higher on the index. Its context window holds up to 1M tokens, while the reasoning models in ChatGPT stop at 400K. And Claude Code comes in the box with it. ChatGPT Pro wins on pace. There's no five hour clock on Codex in any Pro plan, and on the $500 tier the Ultrafast mode can generate up to 300 tokens a second, which OpenAI says is up to eight times its standard speed.

Each side has a catch. On Claude, it's the shared pool. Anthropic's pricing page says that Claude Code draws on the same usage limits as chat, so a long agent run in the terminal eats into the allowance you'd use in the app. On ChatGPT, it's the meter. OpenAI's help center says that Fast mode spends the included allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate, and that Ultrafast spends it at 8 times. So the speed you pay $500 for also drains the 25x allowance faster.

If you code all day in a terminal, start with Max 5x at $100. Claude Pro vs Claude Max covers when 5x stops being enough for you. If Codex is the tool you use, price the $200 tier at 10 times Plus and not at 20, because press reports say that's what it buys from 30 October on. ChatGPT Plus vs Pro covers the step up from Plus.

Which plan has the higher usage limits?

At $200, Claude Max 20x has the higher published multiple, and ChatGPT Pro has the looser clock. Neither of the two vendors publishes an absolute message count for its top chat tier, so the honest way to compare them is by the shape of each limit.

On Claude Max, each session resets five hours after it starts. Anthropic's help center adds that "Max plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models", and its pricing table lists Fable at "50% of weekly limits" on both of the Max tiers. On ChatGPT Pro, the cap you'll meet is the weekly allowance for GPT-6 Pro. OpenAI is blunt about it: "A Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model." As of October 2026, when you hit that limit on the $200 tier, ChatGPT switches you to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium. On the $100 tier, GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro share one weekly allowance between them.

Bursty use suits ChatGPT Pro. If you have a heavy day with quiet ones around it, you'll never hit a five hour wall there. If you use it steadily every working hour, Claude Max 20x suits you better, because it has the bigger stated multiple. Claude usage limit reached and ChatGPT limit reached explain what each of the limit messages means when it shows up.

Images are the cleanest split of all. OpenAI lists "Unlimited and faster image creation" on Pro. Anthropic's help center says that Claude doesn't create pictures the way an image tool does, and that it builds diagrams and charts in HTML and SVG instead. Video is gone from both of them. OpenAI's own Sora page says that the product has not been available since 26 April 2026.

Research is the closest call. Claude's Research mode is on both of the Max tiers, and with its 1M context a long report can sit next to all of its sources in one thread. ChatGPT Pro runs deep research at the maximum allowance OpenAI offers, and the ChatGPT deep research limit explains how that allowance is counted. If your research means reading your own PDFs, pick Max. If it means sending an agent out across the web, pick Pro.

Getting both flagship families costs $40 a month, not $400

Many of the people who weigh Claude Max against ChatGPT Pro really want both labs' best models. That costs $40. Claude Pro at $20 includes Opus, and ChatGPT Plus at $20 includes GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex, each at the base allowance. Do you need both ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro tests whether your week is worth the pair.

Whizi is the one bill version of the same idea. As of October 2026, its Powerhouse plan is $49.99 a month for 10,000 credits. On it, Claude Opus 5.5 costs 20 credits a message, and Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra cost 100 each. That's 500 Opus messages, or 100 of the Astra ones. Whizi Pro, at $29.99, has Claude Opus and ChatGPT Sol at 20 credits each from 2,500, and it can show both answers side by side on one screen. Whizi loses on every one of the heavy work lines in the table above. It has no Claude Code, no Codex, no Dot and no deep research run, and each message caps input at 40,000 tokens, where Claude takes up to 1M. Whizi vs Claude Pro and how Whizi credits work have the full columns.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Pro still $200 a month?

Yes, but press reports say it buys less from 30 October 2026. OpenAI now sells Pro at $100, $200 and $500 a month. The $200 tier reopened to new subscribers with a lower allowance, and TheNextWeb reports that its Codex and Work usage falls from 20 times Plus to 10 times on 30 October. OpenAI's DevDay recap describes the $500 tier as 25 times the Plus allowance.

Should I get Claude Max 5x or ChatGPT Pro at $100?

Get Claude Max 5x if you write code or work with long documents, and get ChatGPT Pro at $100 if you want unlimited image creation, deep research and GPT-6 Pro. Both of them cost $100 a month as of October 2026. Max 5x gives you five times the session allowance of Claude Pro. OpenAI launched its $100 tier in April 2026 at five times Plus in Codex.

Which is better for research, Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro?

ChatGPT Pro is better for research on the web, and Claude Max is better for research inside your own documents. OpenAI lists maximum deep research on Pro. Claude includes its Research mode on Max, and it can read up to 1M tokens in one conversation, against 400K on the reasoning models in ChatGPT Pro.

Do you need $200 a month to use the best Claude and ChatGPT models?

No. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus at $20 each reach Claude Opus and GPT-6 Astra, which are each lab's top model on Artificial Analysis as of October 2026, though Plus only has Astra in Work and Codex. Whizi Powerhouse at $49.99 a month puts both of the families on one bill, but it has no Claude Code, Codex or deep research.
