Where do you cancel ChatGPT Pro?
You cancel ChatGPT Pro on the platform that bills you. OpenAI's cancellation article, updated on 25 October 2026, puts the web control under Settings, Billing. All three Pro tiers cancel the same way: Pro 100 at $100 a month, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500.
| Who bills you | Where to cancel | The taps |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI (chatgpt.com) | ChatGPT settings | Account menu, Settings, Billing, then Cancel under Cancel plan |
| Apple (bought in the iPhone or iPad app) | iOS Settings | Your name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT, Cancel Subscription |
| Google Play (bought in the Android app) | Play Store | Subscriptions, ChatGPT, Cancel subscription; or play.google.com, Manage, Cancel subscription |
| A ChatGPT Business workspace | Workspace billing | Workspace settings, Billing, Manage plan, Cancel subscription |
Not sure where you bought it? Your receipt says. OpenAI notes that "A subscription purchased on chatgpt.com does not appear in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions," so an empty list in iOS Settings means you're billed on the web. If the billing controls don't show on chatgpt.com, OpenAI's fix is to sign in to the same account in another browser and try again.
Do it a day early. OpenAI says to "Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the next subscription period." Pro is billed monthly only, with no annual option, so you're never more than a month from that date. On Pro 500, a cancellation that misses the window can cost $500.
Can you undo a ChatGPT Pro cancellation?
Yes, until the paid period ends. OpenAI's Pro tiers article, read on 25 October 2026, says "Scheduling a cancellation does not end your subscription immediately. You keep access until the end of the current billing period and can undo the cancellation before that period ends." So there's no reason to wait for the last day. Cancel now, and change your mind later if you need to.
Pro 200 subscribers have one more date to know. OpenAI cut the tier's included usage at its 29 September event. Engadget reported that Codex and Work dropped from 20x the Plus allowance to 10x. Anyone active on Pro 200 between 22 September and 10 a.m. Pacific on 29 September keeps the old allowance "through October 29, 2026 while their Pro 200 subscription is active." After that, OpenAI moves everyone to the lower one at the same $200.
So after 29 October 2026, keeping Pro 200 for the old limits buys nothing. Coming back later is open, too. OpenAI paused new Pro 200 sign ups on 10 September 2026, per Fortune, and now says "New Pro 200 subscriptions are available from the pricing page."
What keeps charging after you cancel ChatGPT Pro?
Cancelling stops the Pro renewal. It doesn't touch purchased credits, and OpenAI's cancellation article never mentions them.
| What it is | Does cancelling Pro stop it? | Where you check it |
|---|---|---|
| Pro subscription ($100, $200 or $500 a month) | Yes, at the end of the paid period | Settings, Billing |
| Automatic reload of credits | Not stated by OpenAI | Settings, Usage, or Usage and Billing in Codex |
| A credit balance you already bought | No; it stays valid 12 months from purchase | Settings, Usage |
| A second plan on another account or store | No | Apple and Google subscriptions, other ChatGPT logins |
Credits are how Pro users keep Codex and ChatGPT Work running past the included allowance. OpenAI's credits article says automatic reload buys enough credits to return your balance to a target "using your default payment method on file," and you turn it on and off under Settings, Usage. Switch it off before you cancel.
A leftover balance doesn't vanish on cancel. OpenAI says "Credits are valid for 12 months from purchase," and they're "non-refundable unless required by law or contract." On Free and Go, OpenAI says you "may still be able to view and use an existing credit balance," so check Settings, Usage after Pro ends before you buy more.
Duplicate plans cause the rest. For a second charge, OpenAI's troubleshooting section says to "check whether you have subscriptions under different ChatGPT, Apple, or Google accounts." One web plan and one App Store plan on the same email is the common pair.
What happens when you cancel ChatGPT Pro?
Your plan drops on the end date, and your account stays. OpenAI says "Canceling stops future renewals," and "If you only want to stop future charges, you do not need to delete your ChatGPT account." None of its cancellation steps touches a conversation. Do you lose your chats when you cancel covers what the free plan keeps.
| Pro tier (OpenAI, read 25 October 2026) | Price a month, web | Price a month, US App Store | Ultrafast | Included usage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro 100 | $100 | $100.00 | Not included | The lowest of the three, per OpenAI |
| Pro 200 | $200 | $200.00 | Not included | More than Pro 100, per OpenAI |
| Pro 500 | $500 | $500.00 | Included (GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol) | The highest of the three, per OpenAI |
What you lose is the Pro allowance and OpenAI's Pro models, plus Ultrafast if you were on Pro 500. Apple's US listing sells all three tiers at the web price, so an iPhone subscriber has no store markup to escape.
Deleting the account is a separate step with one trap. OpenAI says "Deleting your ChatGPT account cancels subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT. It does not cancel Apple App Store subscriptions." If Apple bills you, cancel there first. How to delete a ChatGPT account covers the rest.
Can I get a refund for ChatGPT Pro?
Only in narrow cases. OpenAI's refund article, updated on 25 October 2026, starts from "Payments are generally non-refundable." Cancelling doesn't refund anything by itself. You keep Pro until the end date instead.
The discretionary refund needs an unused plan. If you contact OpenAI within seven days of the charge, an individual plan with no substantial use may qualify. After seven days there's "no automatic prorated discretionary refund," and OpenAI says "An accidental purchase, forgetting to cancel, dissatisfaction, or a plan change does not by itself qualify" unless a legal or billing exception applies. Ask through the chat widget at help.openai.com while signed in to the account that was charged. A web refund takes 5 to 7 business days to process and a Google Play one up to 10.
The law adds two more routes. In the EU, the UK and Turkey you get a prorated refund if you cancel within 14 days of purchase. In South Korea it's a full refund within 7 days if you haven't used the service. Apple handles App Store refunds itself. A granted refund ends the access it covered, so don't expect to keep Pro to the end date as well.
Cancel Pro or drop to Plus?
Drop to Plus if you still want Codex and the paid models at a smaller allowance. Plus is $20 a month, or $19.99 in the US App Store as of 25 October 2026, and a downgrade waits for the end of the paid Pro month just like a cancel. OpenAI points plan changes to Settings, My Plan. How to downgrade ChatGPT Pro to Plus has the steps and the Codex catch. Pro 100 is the middle step. TechCrunch reported 5x the Codex usage of Plus at its 9 April 2026 launch.
Cancel outright if Codex isn't part of your week. Some people leave Pro because they want a strong model in chat, not a $100 to $500 allowance. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month and carries ChatGPT Sol next to Claude Opus and Claude Sonnet. Credits per message vary by model and can change. It loses to ChatGPT Pro on volume, and Codex and ChatGPT Work stay OpenAI's. If you live in Codex, Plus is the better landing spot.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel ChatGPT Pro anytime?
Yes. OpenAI says you cancel through the platform where you bought Pro, and you can normally keep using it until the end of the billing period. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, and you can undo the cancellation before the period ends. The same steps cover Plus, as how to cancel ChatGPT Plus shows.
Do I lose my chats if I cancel ChatGPT Pro?
No, cancelling doesn't delete them. OpenAI says cancelling only stops future renewals, and you don't need to delete your account to stop paying. None of its cancellation steps touches your chats. You lose the Pro allowance, the Pro models and Ultrafast on Pro 500. Do you lose your chats when you cancel has the details.
Why was I charged after cancelling ChatGPT Pro?
Usually for one of three reasons. You cancelled inside the last 24 hours, a second plan exists on another account or store, or credits topped up on automatic reload. Check Settings, Billing and Settings, Usage, then your Apple and Google subscriptions. To take the card off as well, see how to remove your card from ChatGPT.
Does deleting my ChatGPT account cancel Pro?
Only if OpenAI bills you. OpenAI says deleting your account cancels subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT, but not Apple App Store ones, so cancel in iOS Settings first. You don't need to delete anything just to stop paying. How to delete a ChatGPT account covers the steps.
