How to delete your ChatGPT account without leaving a bill behind

Quick answer

Open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Account, and select Delete next to Delete account. Enter your email or phone, type DELETE, then choose Permanently delete my account. OpenAI deletes your data within 30 days. Deleting cancels a subscription billed by ChatGPT, but not one billed by Apple.

Deleting is not the way to stop paying, and OpenAI says so first

OpenAI opens its own cancellation article with the sentence most people arriving here need: "If you only want to stop future charges, you do not need to delete your ChatGPT account."

The reason that matters is what deletion does and does not reach. A subscription bought on chatgpt.com is billed by OpenAI, and deleting the account cancels it. A subscription bought in the iPhone app is billed by Apple, and Apple has never heard of your deletion. OpenAI states it plainly: "Deleting your account does not cancel an Apple subscription."

Google Play sits in between. OpenAI asks you to check the Play subscription and cancel it if it is still active, rather than promising the deletion handles it.

So the order is fixed. Find out who billed you from a receipt, cancel there, confirm the cancellation, and only then delete. Our how to cancel ChatGPT Plus guide covers all three routes, and how to remove your card from ChatGPT covers the payment method, which is a third separate action again.

The steps, and the word you have to type

On the web, the control is two clicks from the chat window:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Open your account menu and select Settings.
  3. Select Account. The panel lists Name, Username, Email, then a Delete account row with a red Delete button.
  4. Enter your account email or phone number, and type DELETE when prompted.
  5. Select Permanently delete my account.

The typed confirmation is the part worth knowing before you start, because it is the point where people assume something has gone wrong. Nothing has. OpenAI wants a deliberate keystroke rather than a click you could make by accident.

Two situations where this control is not there at all. Business, Enterprise, Edu and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces have no self service deletion, so a managed account goes through whoever runs the workspace. And if you cannot sign in, deletion moves to the Privacy Portal: Make a Privacy Request, then "I have a consumer ChatGPT account", then "Delete my ChatGPT account", then verification of the email or phone already on the account.

The Ads account warning nobody else on this page mentions

OpenAI's deletion article carries a section that no competing guide on this SERP covers, and it is the only part of deleting a ChatGPT account that can cost real money afterwards.

In OpenAI's words: "If the email address for your OpenAI account is also used to access an Ads account, deleting your OpenAI account may prevent you from accessing or managing that Ads account. Deleting your OpenAI account may not pause or cancel active ad campaigns, which could continue serving and accruing charges."

Read the shape of that. The account you used to log in is gone, the campaigns are still running, and the ability to turn them off went with the login. OpenAI's own instructions before deleting: pause campaigns first, make sure another authorised user has access to the Ads account, and contact support if you are the only one with access.

This affects a small share of readers and it affects them a lot. If you have never opened an OpenAI Ads account, skip it. If you or your business has, this is the check to do before anything else.

What deletion does not give you, and what it costs to find out late

Deletion is a heavy tool that people reach for to solve four lighter problems. Each of the four has its own answer, and three of them do not need deletion at all.

What you actually wantDeleting gets youDo this instead
Stop payingOnly for a charge billed by ChatGPT itselfCancel where you were billed, at least 24 hours before renewal
Change your sign in methodNothing. OpenAI says deleting does not let you change itSettings, Security and login, and if Password shows Add, add one
Remove one conversationEverything, permanentlyDelete or archive the single chat
Free the email for a new accountWorks, after a waitThe same email is usable again after 30 days

On that last row, the detail that catches people out: a deleted account cannot be reactivated, ever. OpenAI is explicit. What you can do is create a brand new account on the same email after 30 days, and only if the account was fully deleted rather than deactivated. A deactivated account is a different state, and "Waiting 30 days does not reactivate a deactivated account."

One more limit for anyone who uses the API. A phone number can verify the first API key for up to three accounts, and "Deleting an account does not reset that API verification limit." OpenAI removes the number from its system after 30 days, but the API count stays spent.

What happens to your data, and how long it takes

Thirty days is the number. OpenAI: "If you delete your account, we will delete your data within 30 days, except we may retain a limited set of data for longer where required or permitted by law." That legal carve out is not a sign the deletion failed.

Deleted chats are on the same clock and are not recoverable. OpenAI removes them within 30 days. If your goal is a tidy sidebar rather than deletion, archive instead, because OpenAI says archiving removes a chat from the sidebar without deleting it.

Personalization is its own Settings tab, separate from Data controls. Both sit in the same settings list as Account, so open them and clear what you actually want gone rather than reaching for deletion as the only lever.

If you are deleting because of what the account knows about you rather than what it costs, what never to paste into an AI chat is the more useful read, since it prevents the problem instead of cleaning up after it.

If you are leaving because one vendor was not worth $20 a month

Most people who delete an AI account are not leaving AI. They are leaving a subscription that stopped earning its place, which is a different decision and has a different answer.

Total the real number first with the AI subscription savings calculator, then read is ChatGPT Plus worth it if the honest question is whether to come back later.

Whizi vs ChatGPT Plus is the side by side and Whizi pricing has the figures: Pro is $19.99 a month billed yearly, $239.88 for the year, with GPT alongside Claude Sonnet, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek on one plan. The trade worth knowing before you switch: Custom GPTs, ChatGPT's Projects and the OpenAI Ads tooling stay with OpenAI. If any of those is why you had the account, deleting it costs you something no other workspace replaces.

Workflow checklist
  • Cancel an Apple or Google Play subscription before deleting, never after
  • Export any chats you want to keep, because deletion is permanent
  • Pause any Ads campaigns running on the same email first
  • Type DELETE at the prompt and confirm with Permanently delete my account
  • Wait 30 days if you plan to sign up again on the same email
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting my ChatGPT account cancel my subscription?

It cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT. OpenAI states that it does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription, and asks you to check a Google Play subscription separately. Cancel in the store first, then delete.

Can I get my ChatGPT account back after deleting it?

No. OpenAI says deleted accounts cannot be reactivated. You can create a new, empty account with the same email address after 30 days, provided the account was fully deleted rather than deactivated.

How long does OpenAI keep my data after deletion?

Your data is deleted within 30 days, except a limited set that may be retained longer where required or permitted by law. Deleted chats follow the same 30 day rule and cannot be recovered.

Why is there no Delete account button on my account?

Self service deletion is not available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. A managed account is deleted by whoever administers the workspace, so contact your organisation.

How do I delete a ChatGPT account I cannot sign in to?

Use OpenAI's Privacy Portal. Choose Make a Privacy Request, then I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Delete my ChatGPT account, and complete verification. You must be able to verify the email or phone already linked to the account.

Should I delete my account to change how I sign in?

No, and OpenAI says deletion does not let you change your sign in method. If you signed up with Google, Apple or Microsoft, open Settings, then Security and login, and if Password shows Add, add a password instead.
