In brief

ChatGPT costs $0 on Free, $8 a month on Go, $20 on Plus and $100, $200 or $500 on Pro, as of October 2026. Business seats cost $25 a month, or $20 billed annually, with a two-seat minimum. Plus has cost $20 since OpenAI launched it in February 2023, and every other price arrived later.

How much does ChatGPT cost per month?

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, and it's one of ten prices OpenAI now publishes. We read each row below from OpenAI's pricing page and its help center on 29 October 2026. US prices, before sales tax:

EduNot published, through salesContractUniversitiesCampus-wide deployment

Text chat is unlimited on all four personal plans, so the price buys models and tools, not messages. OpenAI's footnote adds that usage "must be reasonable and comply with our policies." The real split is the model list. If you're on Free or Go, you get GPT-6 Luna and a small thinking model, and nothing above them. Plus is the first plan that lets you pick GPT-6 Sol or GPT-6 Astra, and Pro adds a Pro reasoning model on top of both of them. That's the jump. We cover what Go gives up in ChatGPT Go vs Plus.

Has the ChatGPT Plus price changed since 2023?

No. OpenAI launched Plus at $20 a month on 1 February 2023, and the pricing page still says $20 after 44 months. Every other paid ChatGPT price came later and was built around it:

Plus has been $20 since 2023, and every other price came later
202420252026PersonalplansPlus, $20Pro, $200Go, India firstPro, $100Pro 500TeamplansTeam, $25 to $30Renamed BusinessPremium seats

Team seats got cheaper on the way. When OpenAI put out its Team launch post on 10 January 2024, it priced a seat at "$25/month per user when billed annually, or $30/month per user when billed monthly." That same seat was renamed Business on 29 August 2025, and it now costs $20 and $25. Pro went the other way. It launched at $200 on 5 December 2024. On 9 April 2026 it got a $100 tier, which TechCrunch said would offer "5x more Codex than the Plus plan", and at DevDay on 29 September 2026 OpenAI put a $500 tier above both of them. Go came in at the bottom. It started in India on 19 August 2025, at ₹399 a month.

How much is ChatGPT Plus in other currencies?

ChatGPT Plus costs €22.99 in Germany and Spain, £19.99 in the UK and ₹1,999 in India in Apple's App Store. We read each storefront's ChatGPT listing on 29 October 2026, starting with the US listing:

App Store countryPlus a monthGo a monthPro 100 a month
United States$19.99$8.00$100.00
Germany€22.99€7.99€102.99
Spain€22.99€7.99€102.99
United Kingdom£19.99£6.99£88.90
India₹1,999₹399₹10,699

Japan¥3,000¥1,400¥16,800
MexicoMX$399MX$129MX$1,989

Apple's prices include VAT everywhere but the US and Canada, so €22.99 already carries German or Spanish tax and $19.99 doesn't. The website can differ by a few cents. On 11 October 2026 chatgpt.com charged €23 in the euro area and £20 in the UK. Our ChatGPT Plus price by country table covers 37 countries, with the tax split out.

What changed for ChatGPT Pro 200 on 29 October 2026?

OpenAI canceled the Pro 200 allowance cut on 29 October 2026, the day it was due, so every Pro 200 plan keeps the higher allowance at $200. Its Pro tiers article now says: "The reduction announced in our September 29 email is canceled." If you already had the higher Work and Codex allowance, you keep it. If you had the lower one, OpenAI says it "has doubled to match."

New Pro 200 sign-ups get the same allowance. Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include "twice their previous Work and Codex allowance." Plus usage didn't change. Pro 500 is the only tier with Ultrafast mode, which burns your included usage at 8 times the Standard rate. OpenAI's DevDay recap put Pro 500's allowance at "25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance" when it launched. All three tiers bill monthly, and none of them has a five-hour limit in Work and Codex. Most people weighing these tiers should stay on Plus, and ChatGPT Plus vs Pro shows where the line sits.

Can you pay for ChatGPT Plus yearly?

No. A year of Plus costs $240, paid month by month. OpenAI's Go help article says: "Currently, we do not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance for ChatGPT Go, Plus, or Pro subscriptions." Annual billing exists only on Business and Enterprise.

That makes Business the one ChatGPT plan with a yearly discount. A Standard seat drops from $25 to $20 a month on the annual plan, per OpenAI's Business billing article. The two-seat minimum still applies. Two annual seats cost $480 a year, exactly what two Plus subscriptions cost, and they add an admin console and default training opt-out. For one person, Plus is cheaper. ChatGPT Business vs Plus runs that math.

Ads are the other price you pay on the cheap plans. OpenAI started testing them in the US on 9 February 2026, and its ads FAQ says they "may appear for users on the Free and Go plans." Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu don't show them.

Is there a ChatGPT discount or free trial?

There's no public free trial, and the discounts that exist check who you are. OpenAI's Back to School offer gives US college and graduate students four free monthly billing periods of Plus. SheerID checks enrollment, and the terms say: "Claim the offer by October 31, 2026." After the free months, Plus renews at $20 unless you cancel. Our ChatGPT Plus student discount page tracks past and future student offers.

There are three more routes, and all of them are on OpenAI's own pages. If you're a US service member leaving active duty within 12 months, or a veteran or retiree who left in the past 12, you can claim free Plus through ID.me. If you teach K to 12 in the US and can prove it, the pricing page says ChatGPT for Teachers is free for you through June 2027. A nonprofit can get "up to a 75% discount" on Business or Enterprise. Anyone else pays from day one, and ChatGPT Plus free trial lists every real offer and the fake ones to skip.

Is the ChatGPT API cheaper than a subscription?

For light use, yes. OpenAI's API price list shows "gpt-6.1-sol" at $2.00 per million input tokens and $10.00 per million output tokens on Standard. One answer of 1,000 tokens in and 500 out costs $0.007 at that rate. So $20 buys about 2,857 such answers, or 95 a day.

The catch is everything that sits around the model. With the API you don't get the ChatGPT app, and you don't get its memory, its image tool or its voice mode. Long chats also send their whole history again with each turn, so the cost of a chat climbs as it grows. Free, Go and Plus include no API usage, and OpenAI bills it on its own. Pro is the exception. OpenAI's pricing page gives each Pro tier monthly API credits, more on each step up, and unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle. ChatGPT API vs subscription shows where each one wins.

How can you pay less than $20 for ChatGPT and Claude?

If you want more than one company's models, a bundle costs less than two subscriptions. Plus at $20 buys OpenAI's models only. Claude Pro is a second subscription, and Claude pricing lists its plans. Whizi, which publishes this page, puts ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini models in one app:

ChatGPT PlusWhizi StarterWhizi Pro
Price$20 a month$15.99 a month$29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed annually at $239.88

AllowanceUnlimited text chats, within OpenAI's policy800 messages a month2,500 credits a month; credits per message vary by model
Codex, ChatGPT Work, custom GPTsYesNoNo

Whizi loses on the things OpenAI builds around its models. There's no Codex, no ChatGPT Work, no custom GPT store, no Dot agent and no ChatGPT deep research. Plus also has no message cap for everyday text, while Whizi's plans do. If you live in Codex or custom GPTs, pay OpenAI. If you want Claude Opus and ChatGPT Sol side by side, the cheapest way to use Claude and GPT compares every route. For Claude alone, Claude Pro free trial covers what Anthropic offers. Still unsure about Plus itself? Is ChatGPT Plus worth it answers that by use case.

Workflow checklist
  • Check the price for your country in the App Store or at checkout; outside the US and Canada it already includes VAT or GST
  • If you're a US student, claim the four free Plus months before 31 October 2026
  • Pick Go at $8 if you only hit Free's caps on uploads, images or voice
  • Pick Plus at $20 for GPT-6 reasoning, deep research, Codex and no ads
  • Pay for Pro only if you run out of Plus usage in Codex or ChatGPT Work every week
  • For two or more people, compare annual Business seats at $20 each with separate Plus plans
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is ChatGPT Plus per year?

ChatGPT Plus costs $240 a year, paid as twelve monthly charges of $20 plus any sales tax. OpenAI has no annual Plus plan and no prepaid months. If you only need it some months, cancel between them; our cancellation guide has the steps for the web, iPhone and Android.

How much is ChatGPT Go?

ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US, ₹399 in India and €7.99 in Germany's App Store as of October 2026. It raises Free's caps on uploads, images, voice and memory but keeps ads and leaves out Plus's reasoning models. Our ChatGPT free vs paid comparison goes row by row.

Does ChatGPT Plus cost more with tax?

In the US, yes. Sales tax is added on top of the $20. In most other countries the listed price already includes VAT or GST, which is why Plus costs €22.99 in Germany. How you pay can matter too, and ChatGPT payment methods lists the cards, UPI, Pix and app store options by country.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month?

It's worth it if you hit Free's limits on reasoning models, deep research or Codex every week. If you mostly chat in text, Free already gives unlimited text chats. Plus's own limits are words, not numbers, and the AI usage limits comparison shows what 34 plans, Plus included, actually promise.
