ChatGPT Business vs Plus: the same limits and the same $20 a seat on annual billing, so headcount decides

In brief

ChatGPT Business beats Plus from two people up; for one, Plus wins. As of September 2026 a Business Standard seat costs the same $20 a month as Plus on annual billing, and OpenAI's usage table gives it identical per-window message estimates. Business adds no training by default, an admin console and SSO; a solo user pays for two seats.

Which costs more at 1, 2 and 5 people: ChatGPT Business or Plus?

At two people and at five, ChatGPT Business on annual billing costs exactly what the same number of Plus accounts costs, $20 a head a month, and only a solo buyer pays a premium, because a Business workspace needs two seats. OpenAI's prices as of 27 September 2026: Plus is $20 a month with no annual option; a Business Standard seat is $25 billed monthly or $20 a month billed annually; a Premium seat is $125 or $100; the minimum is two seats, Standard or Premium in any mix, and a workspace can hold up to 200.

5, one of them on a Premium seatnot sold$180 a month, $2,160 a year$225 a month, $2,700 a year$960 to $1,500

US list prices in dollars before tax; the same figures are on OpenAI's billing and seats page. The $0 rows come with a string attached: the annual plan is a commitment. OpenAI says added seats "remain committed through the end of the current annual term", a seat reduction only takes effect at the next billing cycle, and its refund page says unused seats "are generally non-refundable for the billing period you've committed to". Two Plus accounts can each be cancelled next month. Two annual Business seats cannot.

The solo row is the one most people searching this are on, and it is the one where Business is expensive: $480 a year for a workspace with an empty chair, against $240 for Plus. The rest of this page is about whether what Business adds is worth $240 to $360 to one person, and it mostly is not, unless the training default is a contractual requirement for you.

Does ChatGPT Business get more usage than Plus?

No, not on a Standard seat. OpenAI's usage table for Work and Codex, checked 27 September 2026, lists the same estimated messages per five-hour window for Plus and for "Standard Business" on every model it covers: 10 to 100 on GPT-5.6 Sol, 5 to 45 on GPT-6 Astra, 25 to 200 on GPT-5.6 Terra, 250 to 2,000 on GPT-5.6 Luna. The higher usage on the Business marketing page belongs to the Premium seat, which OpenAI says "has 5x the included usage of Standard seats, with the benefit of no 5-hour limit", and which its Codex pricing page maps onto the Pro 5x estimates.

People who buy Business for the limits are the ones who come back to the forums disappointed; the ones who bought it for the data terms tend to stay. The table explains the first group. OpenAI's own caveat sits under it: "These are not fixed message limits. Actual usage varies by task, model and settings, and weekly limits may also apply." Everyday Instant chat is "virtually unlimited" on both plans, "subject to safeguards against misuse", so the five-hour window bites in Work, Codex and the reasoning models rather than in ordinary chat.

Two usage differences do exist on a Standard seat, and neither is the multiplier people expect. First, Business includes 15 Pro-model messages a month, "shared across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro", an allowance OpenAI's Plus page does not list; a Premium seat gets 50 a week. Second, a Business workspace can buy credits: OpenAI says users "can purchase workspace credits via flexible pricing for usage exceeding included rate limits". A Plus user who empties the window waits for it to refill; a Business user can pay to keep going. For someone who lives in Codex, that second point is the real argument for Business as a solo buyer, and it is an argument for a $100 Pro plan too, which ChatGPT Plus vs Pro prices out.

What does ChatGPT Business add that Plus cannot switch on?

Business adds four things a Plus account cannot get by changing a setting: training off by default and in the contract, an admin console with roles, SSO, and workspace-sized shared projects. It also removes one thing Plus has, the self-serve data export.

The training row is the one that decides most purchases, so here is the exact wording. For individual plans OpenAI says "When you use our services for individuals, such as ChatGPT and Codex, we may use your content to train our models", and the way out is a toggle, "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, then Data controls (how to turn it off). For workspaces the sentence is "By default, we don't use inputs or outputs from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, or our API to improve our models." A Plus user who flips the toggle ends up in the same place for new chats. The difference is who has to remember, and what a client's security questionnaire will accept: a default in the vendor's business terms, or a screenshot of a setting. In states that adopted the NAIC data security model law, an insurance agency with ten or more staff has a written reason to care: AI for insurance agents quotes its line on vendor due diligence.

The admin console is narrower than the word suggests. Admins get "Admin controls for managing users, roles, and access" and "Usage visibility and spend controls", and OpenAI's Business privacy page says "Usage analytics and spend controls are separate from chat transcript access". The owner of a five-person workspace sees who used how much and cannot read anyone's chats; the transcript feed is an Enterprise feature, which can my employer see my ChatGPT conversations covers plan by plan. SSO and multi-factor authentication are on the Business page; SCIM provisioning and data residency are listed as Enterprise.

Shared projects are where a small team feels the difference daily. OpenAI's projects page gives Plus 25 files and 10 collaborators per project, and Business 40 files and 100 collaborators, with a workspace link that lets every member join without an invite. Connected apps such as Gmail, Slack and GitHub work on both plans; on Business "many apps are enabled by default, but administrators can change workspace access", which is the switch a manager wants when a contractor joins. Company Knowledge, which searches those connected sources in one answer, is listed as included on every Business seat.

ChatGPT Team vs Plus is the same question: Team became Business on 29 August 2025

ChatGPT Team and ChatGPT Business are one plan. OpenAI's rename FAQ says "ChatGPT Team was renamed to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025" and that "The rename itself did not change the plan's features, pricing, or usage limits." Every 2024 and early 2025 thread comparing Team with Plus is comparing the plan you can buy today under its old name.

What has changed since is the seat structure. On 24 August 2026 OpenAI added Premium seats ("5x more usage than Standard seats, no five-hour usage limit") and lifted the workspace cap to 200 paid seats. The old forum claim that Team gave "double the interaction limit" of Plus dates from the GPT-4 message caps of 2024; the current usage table above gives a Standard seat the same estimate as Plus. If a page you are reading still quotes doubled limits for Team, it is describing 2024.

Is it better to get ChatGPT Plus or Business?

Plus for one person, Business on annual billing for two or more, and a Premium seat only for the one person who empties the five-hour window. The prices in the first table make the headcount rule, and the usage table makes the seat rule.

One person: Plus at $240 a year. Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" on day one and you have the same training outcome for new chats. Buy Business as a solo user only when a client contract or a security questionnaire requires the vendor default rather than your setting, and price that requirement honestly at $480 a year for two seats with one empty. If the reason is Codex windows rather than data, a $100 Pro plan carries the Pro 5x estimates without the second seat. A virtual assistant working inside clients' inboxes meets the same two-seat minimum on Claude Team, and AI tools for virtual assistants prices both against Google Workspace at $7 for one seat.

Two people: Business on annual billing, because it costs the same $480 a year as two Plus accounts and adds the training default, the admin roles, SSO and 40-file shared projects. Pay monthly only if the company might not exist in six months, since the monthly plan costs $120 more a year and the annual plan holds you to every seat until the term ends.

Five people: Business, at the same $1,200 a year as five Plus accounts on annual billing. Give the one heavy Codex user a Premium seat, which adds $80 a month on annual billing and removes the five-hour window for that person only; the other four keep Standard seats and lose nothing against Plus. Nobody in the workspace can run a self-serve data export, so anyone merging a personal account should download their history first; OpenAI's FAQ says of that merge "There is no undo option that moves Business content back."

Whizi, which publishes this page, has no answer for the two-person and five-person rows: it sells individual plans only, with no seats, no admin console, no SSO and no shared projects, so five people are five separate accounts (team accounts). Where it fits is the solo row. One account puts GPT, Gemini and 280+ models behind one login (Claude Sonnet and Gemini from the Pro plan up), Whizi does not use your prompts, files or conversations to train Whizi-owned models, and as of September 2026 Starter is $10.99 a month billed yearly, $0.99 for the first week.

Count the people who will log in this month. One: Plus. Two or more: Business on annual billing, and buy the Premium seat only for the person who hits the window.

Workflow checklist
  • Count seats first: Business needs two, so a solo buyer pays $480 a year on annual billing against $240 for Plus
  • Do not buy Business for usage: a Standard seat has the same per-window estimates as Plus; only the $100 Premium seat gets 5x
  • On Plus, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, then Data controls, on day one
  • Pick annual billing at two or more people, and know the seats are committed until the term ends
  • Export your personal ChatGPT history before merging into a Business workspace; Business has no self-serve export
  • Give a Premium seat only to the person who actually empties the five-hour window
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Business worth it?

Yes for two or more people on annual billing, because a Standard seat costs the same $20 a month as Plus and adds training off by default, an admin console, SSO and 40-file shared projects. No for one person who wants more usage: a Standard seat carries the same per-window estimates as Plus, and the two-seat minimum makes it $480 a year instead of $240.

Can multiple people use one ChatGPT Business account?

Each person needs their own seat. OpenAI prices Business per user per month with a two-seat minimum, each member has their own login and chat history, and workspace admins add or remove seats from the console. Passing one login around breaks the terms and mixes memory and history; the workspace exists so that you do not have to.

What are the differences between ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Business for Codex?

On a Standard seat, none in the window: OpenAI's Work and Codex table lists 10 to 100 GPT-5.6 Sol messages per five-hour window for both Plus and Standard Business. Business differs in what happens afterwards, because a workspace can buy credits to keep going, and a Premium seat at $100 to $125 has five times the included usage with no five-hour window.

Can I move from Plus to Business without losing my chats?

Yes, but export first. OpenAI lets a personal workspace be merged into a Business workspace, and its FAQ warns "There is no undo option that moves Business content back." Data export is available on Plus from Settings, then Data controls, and OpenAI's export page says it is "Not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces", so the export you take before the merge is the last one you can take.
