Is there a free trial for ChatGPT Plus?
There's no public one. OpenAI's pricing page, read on 11 October 2026, lists Plus at $20 a month behind a "Get Plus" button, and neither its plans nor its FAQ mention a trial. The US App Store listing sells the same plan in the app at $19.99, with no trial either. Free months come only from an offer tied to who you are:
Only two of those offers are Plus. The Back to School offer gives four free monthly billing periods to current US college and graduate students. SheerID checks enrollment, and the claim window shuts on 31 October 2026. The service members and veterans offer, announced on 10 November 2025, gives 12 months of Plus. It covers US service members who'll leave active duty within 12 months, plus veterans and retirees who left in the past 12, and ID.me does the check. The Revolut rows are ChatGPT Go, OpenAI's $8 tier, which Revolut bundled into its plans on 30 July 2026. Everyone else pays from day one.
OpenAI also runs invite campaigns, and those are the nearest thing to a classic trial. Its promotions FAQ says some users get referral links to hand out, and that "Generally, new users or users on free plans are eligible to use the invite." OpenAI picks the plan, the length and the countries for each campaign. You can't request one. You either get the link or you don't.
Which free ChatGPT Plus offers are real in October 2026?
Ten routes lead to a paid ChatGPT plan, and four of them are Plus promotions. Three stay open with no closing date, and the student offer closes on 31 October 2026. We read each row from OpenAI's, Apple's or Revolut's own page on 11 October 2026:
| Route | Plan | Free period | Who qualifies | How it's checked | Card at sign-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| chatgpt.com checkout | Plus, $20 a month | None | Anyone | Nothing | Yes, charged at once |
| iPhone app, US App Store | Plus, $19.99 a month | None listed | Anyone with an Apple account | Apple | Apple bills it |
| Back to School offer | Plus | 4 monthly billing periods, claim by 31 October 2026 | Current college and graduate students at eligible US schools | SheerID | Yes, not charged in the free months |
| Service members and veterans | Plus | 12 months from the claim | US service members leaving active duty within 12 months; veterans and retirees who left within the past 12 | ID.me | Some accounts go through checkout |
| Referral invite | Set by each campaign | Set by each campaign | Generally new users or Free users | The invite link | Some promotions require one |
| Partner promo code | Plus | Set by the partner | Often only people who never had Plus | A code from the partner | Checkout must show the discount |
| Revolut | ChatGPT Go | 3 to 12 months, by Revolut plan | Revolut customers | The Revolut app | Not stated |
| India promotion | ChatGPT Go | 12 months | Users in India who signed up from 4 November 2025, plus existing Go subscribers there | Account country | Card or UPI |
| ChatGPT for Teachers | Teachers plan | Free through June 2028 | Verified US K to 12 educators | Educator verification | Not stated |
| ChatGPT Business | Business, 2 users or more | None listed | Teams | Sales or self-serve | Not stated |
Two rows need a warning. TechCrunch reported the India Go year on 27 October 2025, and OpenAI never published a closing date for it. The help article that held its terms now opens OpenAI's general ChatGPT Go page, so we couldn't confirm that new sign-ups in India still get it in October 2026. Business shows no trial on the pricing page at all. Deal sites in the UK and Germany once posted a £1 first month and a free trial of Business for up to five seats, and both listings we opened on 11 October 2026 were marked expired. The Teachers row comes from OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teachers article, which says June 2028; the pricing page still printed June 2027 on 11 October. Students who want the details on the 2025 and 2026 offers have them in our ChatGPT Plus student discount guide.
How do ChatGPT free trial invites and promo codes work?
An invite or partner code works once, for the account that redeems it, and usually only if you've never paid for Plus. OpenAI's Plus promotions page lists the usual reasons a code fails. You may already have Plus, or have used a similar promotion before. The code may have expired, or the campaign may exclude your region or your payment method. The invite FAQ adds a line that catches people out: "Some promotions require adding a valid payment method to start the trial."
That card is how the free period turns into a bill. Most promotions renew at the standard Plus price, so redeem one in four steps:
- Open the link while signed in to the account you want upgraded, in a web browser.
- Check that checkout shows the $0 total or the discount before you confirm. OpenAI says to confirm the discount there before you pay.
- Note the renewal date, and put a reminder two days before it.
- Cancel on the platform that bills you: Settings on chatgpt.com, or the Apple or Google Play subscription screen. OpenAI asks for at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
Cancelling a promotion ends it for good. You can't reuse the code, and subscribing again won't bring the promotional price back. Our ChatGPT Plus cancellation guide has the exact clicks for each platform.
Which free ChatGPT Plus offers are scams?
Any "free Plus" offer that doesn't come from chatgpt.com, help.openai.com, an OpenAI email or a partner OpenAI names is a scam or a resale. OpenAI's promotions page is blunt about codes: "Each promo code is meant for one user and cannot be transferred or sold for cash." A site selling Plus codes, "lifetime" accounts or a shared login is selling something OpenAI forbids. The seller of a shared account also keeps its password, so they can read every chat you type into it.
The newest trick sits on OpenAI's own domain. On 28 September 2026 Huntress reported a custom GPT titled "Plus 5.6" that some victims reached through sponsored Google results for "chatgpt". Its only reply said the service was "experiencing limited availability on the primary domain" and sent visitors to a Google Sites backup page. That page faked a Cloudflare check and asked them to run a PowerShell command, which installed a remote access trojan. Huntress tied at least 40 incidents to the Google Sites page, two of them reached through a custom GPT. OpenAI had removed the first GPT by 25 September, BleepingComputer reported.
Search results carry the same risk. When we searched "chatgpt plus free trial" on 11 October 2026, three of the nine results were "how to get ChatGPT Plus for free" posts parked on unrelated store and magazine subdomains. Three rules sort every offer. A real one never asks you to run a command. It never asks for your ChatGPT password anywhere but chatgpt.com. And it always shows the discount at checkout before you pay.
What does ChatGPT Free already give you?
ChatGPT Free gives unlimited text chat, which covers most of what people want a Plus trial for. OpenAI lifted the text cap on Free and Go from the week of 10 August 2026, Engadget reported. Before that, free users got 10 to 40 messages every 3 to 5 hours on the flagship model, per PCWorld. Free now has a Think button for harder questions, plus web search, image generation, voice and file uploads to a 500MB library. Deep research and Codex are there too, in small amounts. Each tool runs on a weekly allowance OpenAI doesn't publish, and free accounts can see ads.
Plus adds what Free lists as limited or doesn't list at all. Its pricing page names advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, more Codex, and early access to new features. If none of those is the wall you hit, a Plus trial wouldn't show you much. Our free vs paid comparison goes row by row.
What is the cheapest way to test paid ChatGPT without a free trial?
Pay for one month and cancel the same day. Anyone can start that test, and it costs $20 on the web. OpenAI's cancellation article says: "After an ordinary cancellation, paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period." The full ladder, cheapest first, as of October 2026:
- $0: ChatGPT Free with the Think button, which shows whether deeper reasoning changes your answers at all.
- $8: one month of ChatGPT Go, which raises uploads, images, voice and memory but lists none of Plus's reasoning models.
- $19.99 to $20: one month of Plus, cancelled on day one. Treat the $20 as spent: OpenAI's refund article, read on 11 October 2026, says an accidental purchase doesn't qualify for a refund on its own. An unused subscription may get a discretionary refund if you ask within seven days of the charge, and buyers in the EU, the UK and Turkey get a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days.
Whizi, which publishes this page, sells a paid first week rather than a free one. It costs $0.99 on Starter, $1.99 on Pro or $4.99 on Powerhouse, takes a card, and renews at $15.99, $29.99 or $49.99 a month unless you cancel. The Pro week carries 625 credits. That's 31 messages to Claude Opus or ChatGPT Sol at 20 credits each, or 62 to Claude Sonnet, with side by side chats to compare them. The Starter week is 200 messages on ChatGPT Luna, Claude Haiku and Whizi AI. It isn't ChatGPT Plus, though. There are no custom GPTs, no ChatGPT deep research and no Codex, so if those are what you'd pay for, the one-month Plus test is the right one.
- Look for an offer only on chatgpt.com, help.openai.com, an OpenAI email or a partner OpenAI names
- Confirm checkout shows $0 or the discount before you confirm a promotion
- Set a reminder two days before any free period ends; most promotions renew at the full Plus price
- Never run a command or enter your ChatGPT password on a page that promises free Plus
- With no offer open, test Plus by paying for one month and cancelling on day one
Frequently asked questions
Is there a ChatGPT Plus free trial code?
No public one. OpenAI posts no trial codes, and codes from partners work only once, for one account. OpenAI's rules say a promo code can't be transferred or sold for cash, so any site selling one is selling something OpenAI doesn't allow. Real offers arrive by invite link, an OpenAI email, a partner, or the SheerID and ID.me pages.
How long is the ChatGPT Plus free trial?
There's no standard length, because there's no standard trial. Each offer sets its own: four monthly billing periods for US college students who claim by 31 October 2026, and 12 months for eligible US service members and veterans. Invite campaigns set their length campaign by campaign.
Is there a ChatGPT Plus free trial in the UK?
No, not as of October 2026. Both published Plus offers are US only. A UK user can stay on Free, subscribe to Go, or buy Plus for one month. OpenAI gives UK buyers a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase.
Why is my ChatGPT Plus free trial not working?
Usually the account is ineligible. OpenAI lists an existing Plus plan, a past promotion of the same kind, an expired code, and region or payment method limits as the common causes. A Plus plan billed by Apple or Google Play can't take the student offer. If the card itself is refused, our declined card guide covers the six causes.
