ChatGPT card declined: 12 messages from ChatGPT, Apple and Google, and the fix for each

In brief

When ChatGPT says your card was declined, the refusal usually came from your bank, and OpenAI says it typically does not receive the reason. Stripe, which bills ChatGPT on the web, has 50 card decline codes, and 17 of them carry no reason. So read the exact message, fix 3D Secure or the billing details, then call your bank.

17 of Stripe's 50 decline codes reach you with no reason

ChatGPT on the web bills through Stripe. Every invoice under Settings, then Billing, opens on invoice.stripe.com. We sorted the 50 card codes on Stripe's decline code list on 11 October 2026. Thirteen give "an unknown reason" for the refusal. Four more come with Stripe's instruction to show them to you as a generic decline.

That's why the screen tells you so little. OpenAI says it in its own decline article: "We typically don't receive detailed decline reasons from banks, so reaching out to them directly is often the quickest way to resolve payment issues." Apple says the same about the App Store. Your bank is the one party that knows. Ask it about the refused charge from OpenAI. If the bank says it refused nothing, OpenAI's own checklist also has you clear your browser's cache and cookies and try a different payment method. After that, contact its support team.

Our wider guide to paying for AI when your card is declined covers declines at any AI company. This page sticks to ChatGPT's own messages.

What does each ChatGPT decline message mean?

Each message has a different owner and a different fix. The quoted chatgpt.com wording comes from OpenAI's article, or from user reports on OpenAI's forum for the plain decline. The meanings come from Stripe's code list. Apple and Google rows quote their help pages, all read on 11 October 2026.

One retry rule matters before you click Subscribe again. OpenAI's promotions article warns that a failed charge "can sometimes succeed on a later retry." Check Settings, then Billing, first. A second plan is easy to buy by accident.

Which rules decline cards from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and India?

One rule applies everywhere. OpenAI's renewal article says "Payments may be declined if either party is outside of the supported regions," meaning you or the bank that issued your card. Check both on OpenAI's supported countries list. If your country is missing, our page on ChatGPT not being available in your country is the place to start. After that, each market has its own trap.

Japan. Japan's card industry asked, in principle, every online shop to adopt EMV 3-D Secure by the end of March 2025, under its Credit Card Security Guidelines version 5.0, as JCB's merchant notice puts it. So a Japanese card expects a one time code or an app approval at checkout. A blocked popup turns into a decline. Apple's Europe and Japan billing page warns App Store buyers the same way. On chatgpt.com, Japan pays by card only. In the iPhone app, Apple also takes PayPay, Merpay and carrier billing.

Korea. Korean issuers let you shut off foreign online shops card by card. KB Kookmin Card's card safety service (카드사용안심서비스) covers overseas online merchants, for example. Check that setting first. Then you can skip the foreign charge entirely: OpenAI says "Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, and local cards are supported on ChatGPT subscription checkout pages," and Korean plans bill in won.

Taiwan. There's no local wallet on chatgpt.com, so the web needs a card that's open for foreign online payments. If yours isn't, use the app. Apple's payment methods page, dated 7 August 2026, lists JKOPay, Apple Pay and carrier billing from Chunghwa Telecom, FET and Taiwan Mobile for Taiwanese accounts.

India. The Reserve Bank of India requires an extra authentication step on the first payment of a recurring card mandate. Renewals up to ₹15,000 then run without one, under circular RBI/2022-23/73 of 16 June 2022. So finish the bank's OTP page at checkout. UPI is the simpler route, and OpenAI lists it for Go and Plus, though not for Pro.

Why was my card declined for the ChatGPT free trial?

A free or discounted ChatGPT Plus offer still sends you through checkout, where OpenAI asks you to confirm the price shows $0.00. Your bank runs the same checks it runs on a paid month. OpenAI's promotions article lists its own reasons an offer fails, too: you already have Plus, you used a similar promo, the code expired, or "the promotion not being valid in your region or with your payment method." Some offers are only for people who have never had Plus, and some also limit which payment methods they take.

Don't cancel and retry to get a fresh trial. OpenAI says reactivating after cancelling "will not restore the promotional price," and it doesn't reissue codes.

Can you pay for ChatGPT with a prepaid, virtual or Revolut card?

OpenAI bans prepaid cards for one thing only: "Prepaid cards cannot be used to purchase API credits." Its decline article says nothing either way about prepaid cards for ChatGPT plans. So a prepaid card is a maybe, and it has to pass the same address, foreign payment and 3D Secure checks as any other card.

Single use virtual cards are a worse bet. Revolut's virtual card page says its disposable cards "generate new details every time you make a payment," and that "they're not designed for contactless or recurring payments." A ChatGPT plan renews every month. The second charge would hit a card number that no longer exists. Revolut points recurring payments to its reusable virtual cards instead, whose details stay the same.

Subscribed in the app? Apple or Google holds the card

A plan bought in the ChatGPT app is billed by Apple on an iPhone and by Google Play on Android. A decline there has nothing to do with the card on chatgpt.com. OpenAI's billing article says app subscriptions are managed by the App Store or Google Play.

On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Payment & Shipping. Apple's unpaid balance article, dated 4 June 2026, says to choose Fix Payment Information and then Try Again. You can also clear the balance with an Apple Gift Card. Apple's decline article adds that you "might need to ask your financial institution to allow international purchases on your debit or credit card."

On Android, sign in at payments.google.com and act on any alert. Google's payment fixes page is blunt about one case: when an error comes with a request for more information, "The other steps are unlikely to resolve this issue."

The app is also the way out when the web keeps refusing. In Japan the App Store takes PayPay. Google Play takes PayPal in the US, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and Brazil, as our ChatGPT payment methods table shows. The catch is that you'll cancel, and ask for refunds, through the store.

Declined, but a charge still shows on your statement?

A pending amount after a decline is often an authorization, not a payment. Stripe's declines guide says a blocked payment can still show the issuer's authorization on some cards, and "The card issuer typically removes this authorization from the customer's statement within a few days."

A posted charge is different. Open Settings, then Billing, then Transaction history. A row marked Paid means a retry went through, and you've got a plan. If you didn't want it, our AI subscription refunds guide covers OpenAI's refund route.

Workflow checklist
  • Read the exact decline message before you retry
  • Enter the billing address and postal code as your statement prints them
  • Allow popups and turn off the VPN so 3D Secure can finish
  • Ask the bank about the OpenAI charge, and for international, online and recurring payments
  • Check Settings, then Billing, before you subscribe a second time
  • Use Kakao Pay, Naver Pay or UPI where OpenAI offers them, or subscribe in the app
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for ChatGPT with PayPal if my card is declined?

Not on chatgpt.com, since PayPal isn't on OpenAI's list. You can use it through the app where your store takes PayPal. Google Play lists it in the US, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and Brazil. Apple lists it in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia among others, but not in Japan, Korea, Taiwan or India.

Why does my card work everywhere except ChatGPT?

Because OpenAI is a foreign online merchant taking a recurring payment, and many banks switch each of those off separately. Apple's help page gives the same advice for the App Store: ask your bank to allow international purchases on the card. Ask for online and recurring payments too, and for 3D Secure to be enabled.

Will another AI subscription go through if ChatGPT's won't?

Often not on the web, because the same bank rules apply to any foreign merchant. Claude's web checkout takes cards only, and Whizi's web checkout also runs on Stripe, so a card your bank blocks for OpenAI can fail there too. The app store route is what changes the outcome, and that holds for Whizi's iPhone and Android apps as well.
