Which of these 6 causes matches what you see?
OpenAI staff once answered this problem with one help article, "Why is my Plus subscription not appearing?" A staff member linked it on OpenAI's forum on 5 April 2023. When we opened that address on 25 October 2026, it returned "Uh oh. That page doesn't exist." The answer now sits across six other help pages. We read all of them the same day, and each row below quotes or follows one.
| What you see | The likely cause | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Plus works on one device and shows Free on another | Two ChatGPT accounts with different sign in methods | Settings, then Account, on the working device shows the email. Sign in that way everywhere |
| The app says the subscription "is associated with another OpenAI account" | Your Apple ID or Google account is linked to a different ChatGPT account | Sign in to the original account. On iPhone, tap Settings, Account, Restore purchases |
| Billing on chatgpt.com shows a failed or unpaid invoice | The card renewal was refused, so the account dropped to Free | Update the card or pay the invoice, then call the bank if it fails again |
| Apple reports a payment problem and ChatGPT shows Free | An Apple renewal failed and Apple is still retrying it | Fix the payment method in Apple settings. Don't start a second plan on the web |
| platform.openai.com still asks you to pay | The API has its own billing, apart from ChatGPT | Nothing is wrong with Plus. API use needs its own payment method |
| Billing says Paid, the account says Free, and nothing above fits | The plan didn't sync, sometimes during an outage | Check status.openai.com, sign out and back in, then contact support with the receipt |
One rule from OpenAI covers every row. Its iOS upgrade article says: "If you have already paid but your plan is missing, follow Troubleshooting subscriptions linked to another ChatGPT account before purchasing again." A second purchase on the wrong account doesn't fix the first one. It adds a second charge.
Is ChatGPT Plus not activating after payment a known problem?
Yes, and it isn't new. On 25 October 2026 we opened more than two dozen paid but still Free threads on OpenAI's community forum. They run from February 2023 to June 2026, through the web checkout and the App Store.
The biggest thread, "Paid for ChatGPT Plus but still getting free version", had 161 posts and 61,562 views when we read it. Its first post names one cause plainly. The poster's access "reverted to the free version" after a card payment failed, and a retry on the same card didn't bring Plus back. A 7 May 2026 thread describes an invoice marked "Paid" and an account still on Free "after more than 12 hours." The newest we found, from 19 June 2026, is titled "Paid today but Account still showing Free Plan." Forum threads are reports, not diagnoses. They do show you're not the first.
Which ChatGPT account did you pay with?
The account that paid is the one whose email shows under Settings, then Account, on a device where Plus works. OpenAI's login help warns that this email "may be different from the email address where you receive invoices or receipts." So a receipt in your inbox doesn't prove which account it bought.
The sign in method matters as much as the address. If you made the account with Google, Microsoft or Apple, you have to pick that same button again. Apple adds a trap. If you chose Hide My Email when you signed up with Apple, OpenAI says your account "may use an @privaterelay.appleid.com address." If you try your personal email or another button instead, OpenAI says you can hit errors such as "There is already a user with email…" or "Wrong authentication method."
Find the device where Plus still works before you sign out of anything. OpenAI gives the same advice in its account article. Once you sign out, that device can't tell you the email anymore.
How do you restore a ChatGPT Plus purchase on iPhone?
Sign in to the ChatGPT account you used when you subscribed, open Settings in the ChatGPT app, select Account and tap Restore purchases. OpenAI's account linking article explains why the account matters: an App Store purchase "is linked to both that account and your Apple Account."
If restoring shows the other account error, you're signed in to the wrong ChatGPT account. The same article closes two exits people try. Reinstalling the app won't help: "Reinstalling the app won't change which ChatGPT account your subscription is linked to." And a mobile subscription "can't be transferred to a different ChatGPT account."
On Android, OpenAI's article lists a restore step for Apple only. The fix is to sign in to the original account, the one you were using when Google Play charged you. If you can't get into it, contact support with the emails and sign in methods you tried.
Why did ChatGPT Plus drop back to Free after a renewal?
A renewal that fails puts the account back on Free, even when you've paid for months. On the web, OpenAI's renewal article lists the usual reasons: a bank block, low funds, wrong billing details, or "if either party is outside of the supported regions," meaning you or your card's bank. Our ChatGPT card declined page matches each decline message to its fix.
Apple renewals behave differently, and this is where people pay twice. OpenAI's duplicate charges article says: "Your subscription may appear inactive in ChatGPT, but Apple may continue trying to recover it." Subscribe on chatgpt.com in the meantime, then fix your Apple card, and OpenAI says Apple may renew the old plan too. You'd end up with two. So update the Apple payment method and let Apple recover the plan, or cancel the Apple plan first and wait for it to end.
Declines aren't only a ChatGPT problem. If your bank refuses foreign or recurring charges, our guide to paying for AI when your card is declined covers the bank side.
Does ChatGPT Plus include API access?
No. ChatGPT Plus doesn't pay for the API, and OpenAI's billing overview says it directly: "ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems." So platform.openai.com will keep asking for a payment method after you buy Plus. The API even has a Free tier of its own. One August 2024 thread, "Paid $76.7 for Upgrade, but My Account Still on Free Tier," is about API usage tiers, not ChatGPT Plus.
A work plan bills somewhere else again. OpenAI puts ChatGPT Business billing under Workspace settings, then Billing, and only workspace owners can change it.
What should you send OpenAI support?
Send the account emails and sign in methods you tried, the error message, and the steps you've already taken. That's OpenAI's own list. Start the chat from the widget on help.openai.com, and keep the receipt or the card's last four digits close.
Don't buy Plus again while you wait. OpenAI warns that "Trying to purchase again while signed into another ChatGPT account can lead to confusion or duplicate charges." If the plan never appears, the refund route depends on who took the money. Apple refunds App Store purchases. OpenAI Support handles chatgpt.com charges, and Google Play ones too if you ask while signed in to the account that paid.
Frequently asked questions
How long does ChatGPT Plus take to activate after payment?
OpenAI doesn't publish a waiting time, and its help pages treat a missing plan as something to fix rather than wait out. Check the login, restore any App Store purchase and look at Billing first. A May 2026 forum post described an invoice marked Paid with the account still Free after more than 12 hours, so don't count on it fixing itself.
Why does ChatGPT still say Upgrade to Plus after I paid?
Usually because you're signed in to a different account from the one that paid, or with a different method. OpenAI's login help says to pick the same Google, Microsoft or Apple button you signed up with. Our guide to ChatGPT login problems walks through finding the right one.
Can I get a refund if ChatGPT Plus never activated?
Yes, you can ask, and who to ask depends on where you paid. Apple handles App Store refunds. OpenAI Support handles Google Play and chatgpt.com charges, as long as you're signed in to the account that paid. Our AI subscription refunds guide has each route.
Can I move my ChatGPT Plus to another account?
Not if you bought it in the app. OpenAI says mobile subscriptions can't be transferred between ChatGPT accounts. You'd cancel in Apple or Google Play, wait for the plan to end, then subscribe again on the account you want. Here's how to cancel ChatGPT Plus on each platform.
