Is ChatGPT login down, or is it just you?
ChatGPT login is rarely down, so the fault is almost always your account, browser or network. We counted every incident on OpenAI's status page that marked the ChatGPT Login component as affected from 20 July to 18 October 2026. There were 12. Only 3 named logins or signups in the title, and those 3 lasted 92 minutes in all.
The other 8 were wider ChatGPT incidents that listed Login among the affected parts: error spikes, two Work Mode failures and one wide feature outage. The longest was the 29 September incident across ChatGPT, Codex and the API, which held Login for 321 minutes. Add all 12 up and ChatGPT Login had an incident open for 17.5 hours, with a median of 53 minutes each. That's 0.8% of the 90 days. OpenAI's own 90-day uptime figure for the component is 99.94%.
So check once. Open Is ChatGPT down? or status.openai.com and find the Login row under ChatGPT. If it's green, the problem is your account, browser or network, and the table below tells you which.
Which ChatGPT login error are you seeing?
Each message below comes from OpenAI's help center, read on 18 October 2026, with the fix OpenAI gives for it. Most come from one page, Why can't I log in to ChatGPT?, last updated in September 2026.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Wrong authentication method" or "There is already a user with email..." | You picked a different sign-in method than the one you signed up with | Try your password, then Google, Microsoft and Apple in turn, in an incognito window |
| "This user already exists" when you sign up | You started signing up before and didn't finish | Log in instead of signing up |
| "We have detected suspicious login behavior" | Failed attempts or your network tripped a check | Clear cookies, switch network, turn off the VPN, and wait up to an hour |
| "Something went wrong" or "Oops..." on the login page | A generic login error | Wait 60 seconds, check status.openai.com, then clear cookies or try incognito |
| "Checking your browser..." that never ends | A Cloudflare check stuck in a loop | Turn off VPN, proxy and blockers; allow cookies and JavaScript for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com |
| "You do not have an account because it has been deleted or deactivated" | You deleted the account, or OpenAI deactivated it | Read OpenAI's email to you; a deleted account can't come back |
| A verification code that is late, expired or missing | Codes expire, and only the newest one works | Ask for a new code, check spam, and allowlist [email protected] |
| No password reset email | Wrong inbox, or you signed up with Google, Microsoft or Apple and have no password | Check spam and the address, or use the provider's button |
| The "Continue with Google" button is missing | An extension or a stale page hid it | Hard refresh, try another browser, and turn extensions off |
| A request for an MFA code you can't produce | Your phone, app or passkey is gone | Choose another MFA method, or ask Support for a one-time email recovery |
The suspicious login message is a timer, not a ban. OpenAI's advice is to "Wait up to 1 hour before attempting to log in again", because "multiple failed attempts can trigger temporary restrictions." So stop clicking for that hour.
How do you fix ChatGPT login when it worked yesterday?
Work down this list and stop when you're in. The order runs from the fix that costs nothing to the one that costs a support ticket, and it follows OpenAI's own login help page.
- Check status.openai.com. A red or yellow Login row means wait.
- Use the same sign-in method as before. If you signed up with Continue with Google, a password won't work.
- Open an incognito window. It drops extensions and old cookies in one move.
- Clear cache and cookies. Then allow cookies and JavaScript for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com.
- Turn off VPNs, proxies and blockers. Ad blockers and cookie managers can hide the login buttons.
- Switch network or device. On office networks, OpenAI says IT may need to allowlist the Cloudflare check. It also recommends a desktop computer for login trouble.
- Contact OpenAI Support. Record a HAR file of the error first, and list every email and sign-in method you tried.
For a login page that spins forever, start at step 5. OpenAI says some cookie banners, cookie managers and tracker blockers "may block login buttons or verification flows".
Why does ChatGPT say wrong authentication method?
ChatGPT says wrong authentication method because you clicked a different sign-in button than the one you used on day one. OpenAI is blunt about it: different methods "can create separate accounts and subscriptions", and "OpenAI doesn't automatically merge accounts." So a Plus plan on your Google login won't show up when you sign in with a password.
There's one exception. If you signed up with an email and password, you can later use Google, Microsoft or Apple with the same address, and OpenAI's sign-in method page says the account "will automatically combine both login methods." If you signed up with one of those buttons instead, OpenAI's password page says you have no password to reset.
Apple users hit a second trap. If you chose Hide My Email when you signed up with Apple, your ChatGPT account sits on an @privaterelay.appleid.com address, not your real one. Typing your real email opens a different account. Use Continue with Apple with the same Apple ID.
MFA locks the method in place too. Once it's on, "you must continue using your current login method until MFA is disabled."
Why is ChatGPT login not working on iPhone, Android or the app?
App logins fail for the same reasons as web logins, but the app has no incognito window to test with. OpenAI's login page recommends trying "again using a desktop device", so sign in at chatgpt.com in a browser before you reinstall anything.
If the browser works and the app doesn't, log out of the app and sign in with the same button you used in the browser. On iPhone that's often Continue with Apple. If you set up a passkey, it becomes the default way in after you type your email. When it fails, pick "Try another method" on the same screen, per OpenAI's passkeys page.
The Mac and Windows apps can also stop at "Phone number required". OpenAI's error messages page says to add a mobile number from a supported country or region and finish the verification. A message about unusual activity on the iPhone app is a different block, tied to your device and network rather than your password.
What if you lost your MFA codes or your email inbox?
A lost MFA method or a lost inbox puts you past every self-serve fix, and only OpenAI Support can let you back in. Email isn't a standard MFA method, so a missing authenticator app can't be swapped for an email code.
If you have no MFA method left, OpenAI's MFA page, updated in October 2026, says Support runs a verification process that "can take a few days". After it, you get a one-time email recovery login. Add a backup method straight away: "This recovery option is available only once."
Advanced Account Security is stricter. It turns off password sign-in and email recovery, and your recovery key unlocks the account 48 hours after you enter it. OpenAI says Support can't remove it or add sign-in methods for you while it's on.
A lost inbox is the hardest case. OpenAI's login page says that if you can't get login or reset emails, "self-serve troubleshooting won't help", and adds that "SMS is not an alternative for email-based login or verification." Contact Support with the account email, the sign-in method and your billing details. If you're paying for Plus, ask them to cancel it too.
What does deleted or deactivated mean on the ChatGPT login screen?
The message "You do not have an account because it has been deleted or deactivated" means you deleted the account yourself or OpenAI deactivated it. No browser fix touches either. OpenAI's deleted or deactivated page says to check your inbox and spam folder for its email first, since the email says which one happened.
A deleted account can't be reactivated. After 30 days you can make a new account with the same email, but only if the old one was fully deleted, not deactivated. A deactivation for missed identity or age verification is different. You can follow the link in OpenAI's email, and in Italy you can sign in and pick Verify your age on the deactivation screen. For any other deactivation, read OpenAI's email for the reason and contact OpenAI Support if you think it's a mistake.
Can you still use ChatGPT while your login is broken?
Yes, in a limited way. In most supported countries chatgpt.com lets you chat without logging in, but OpenAI's home page help says that mode isn't open in Europe outside the UK. Signed out, you get one conversation at a time, and it isn't saved after the browser session ends.
Whizi, which publishes this page, has its own sign-in (Google, or email and password), so an OpenAI login failure doesn't reach it. Starter, at $15.99 a month, runs ChatGPT Luna and Claude Haiku, and a free account gets 3 messages a day on Whizi AI after a 7-message first day. Where it loses: it can't open your ChatGPT account, your chat history or your Plus plan. Only OpenAI can give those back.
- Check the Login row under ChatGPT on status.openai.com
- Sign in with the same method you signed up with: password, Google, Microsoft or Apple
- Try an incognito window, then clear cookies for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com
- Turn off VPNs, proxies and blockers, then switch network or device
- After a suspicious login warning, wait up to an hour before trying again
- Send OpenAI Support a HAR file and the emails and methods you tried
Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT keep logging me out?
Check your browser first: a setting or extension that clears cookies when you close it signs you out every time. Sometimes it's OpenAI: on 21 August 2026 its status page logged "Unexpected logouts for some ChatGPT web users" for 160 minutes. Accounts on Advanced Account Security also get shorter sessions by design. AI chatbot outages counts how often OpenAI has incidents compared with Anthropic and Google.
Can I sign in to ChatGPT without a password?
Yes. You can sign in with Google, Microsoft or Apple, or with a passkey if you added one in Settings > Security. If you signed up with one of those buttons, you never had an OpenAI password, so a reset email won't arrive. To use ChatGPT with no account at all, see how to use ChatGPT without an account.
Can I cancel ChatGPT Plus if I can't log in?
Yes, through OpenAI Support. Its login help page says to include the account email, the sign-in method you tried and your billing details so Support can check you own the account. If you pay through the App Store or Google Play, you can cancel there without logging in to ChatGPT. How to cancel ChatGPT Plus walks through each billing route.
Does a VPN stop ChatGPT from logging in?
It can. OpenAI lists turning off your VPN as a fix for both the suspicious login message and the Cloudflare "Checking your browser..." loop. Turn it off before you retry, not after. If ChatGPT stays out of reach, what to use when ChatGPT is down lists other chatbots to use in the meantime.
