What payment methods does Claude accept?
The plan decides what counts beyond a card: Team also takes prepaid cards, self-serve Enterprise and invoiced API accounts also take ACH bank transfer, and the app plans take whatever Apple or Google takes. The Pro and Max FAQ is blunt: "For subscriptions purchased on the web, we only accept credit or debit cards." Anthropic's decline article adds that it doesn't take "third-party payment processors such as PayPal or Venmo." Anthropic's billing address article also names a Link wallet: on Pro, Max and self-serve Team, the billing address comes from "your card or Link wallet."
| How you buy Claude | Who bills you | What you can pay with |
|---|---|---|
| Pro or Max on claude.ai | Anthropic | Credit or debit card only |
| Team plan | Anthropic | Credit, debit or prepaid card; no ACH bank transfer |
| API credits in the Claude Console | Anthropic | Credit or debit card |
| Self-serve Enterprise, or API on monthly invoicing | Anthropic | Card, or ACH bank transfer |
| Pro or Max in Claude for iOS | Apple | The methods your Apple Account takes |
| Pro or Max in Claude for Android | Google Play | The methods your Google Play account takes |
| A gift plan from someone else | Nobody for now | Gifts are off sale |
We read every rule in that table in Anthropic's help center on 8 October 2026. Prepaid cards sit in a gap. Anthropic's Team FAQ, updated 7 October 2026, accepts "credit, debit, or prepaid cards." The Pro and Max FAQ names only credit or debit. So Anthropic hasn't said a prepaid card works for Pro or Max, and we won't say it for them.
The currency isn't always US dollars. Our Max account is billed in Canadian dollars, and Anthropic's invoice article says each region has a currency (or currencies) offered to new subscribers. If that isn't your card's currency, your bank may add a foreign transaction fee. The App Store prices the plan in local money: Claude Pro Monthly lists at ¥3,000 in Japan, ₩33,000 in South Korea, 599.000đ in Vietnam and ₹1,999 in India, as of 8 October 2026.
Gifts used to be the way to get Pro without a card of your own. They're off sale. Anthropic's gift article, updated 6 October 2026, says gift plans "are currently unavailable to purchase" and gives no date for their return. A gift bought earlier still redeems at claude.ai/gift/redeem, needs no card from the person who gets it, and expires 365 days after purchase.
Can you pay for Claude with PayPal, PayPay or MoMo?
Not on claude.ai. PayPal, PayPay, MoMo, Kakao Pay and UPI reach Claude only through app store billing, in the countries where Apple or Google lists them, and of the five Google confirms only UPI for subscriptions. In the apps, Anthropic says, "available payment options are determined by the Apple App Store or Google Play." That's the whole trick.
Apple's payment methods page, published 7 August 2026, lists six ways to pay in each of those three countries. Google's Play help lists most of the same wallets. Here they are side by side, as of October 2026.
| Way to pay | claude.ai | Claude for iOS (Apple's list) | Claude for Android (Google's list) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit or debit card | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PayPal | No | US, UK and the Netherlands, not Japan | The US, the UK, Japan, the Philippines and the Netherlands, for apps and digital content |
| PayPay | No | Japan | Japan |
| Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, Toss | No | South Korea | South Korea |
| MoMo, ZaloPay | No | Vietnam | Vietnam |
| UPI | No | India | India |
| GCash | No | The Philippines | The Philippines |
| iDEAL | No | The Netherlands, to add funds only | The Netherlands, not for subscriptions |
Read Google's column with one caution. Google says you can use PayPal, PayPay, MoMo or KakaoPay "to buy apps and digital content", and it doesn't say subscriptions. It does say UPI pays for subscriptions in India, and it says iDEAL can't. Apple adds no such note for these wallets. PayPay's own announcement of 17 May 2023 says it covers in-app purchases once you link your Apple ID.
OpenAI went the other way. Its multi-currency billing article lists Kakao Pay and Naver Pay in Korea, GoPay in Indonesia, Pix in Brazil, UPI in India and GCash in the Philippines, all on the chatgpt.com checkout itself. Anthropic's web checkout lists none of them. Our ChatGPT payment methods page has that list by country.
How do you change the payment method on Claude?
You change it in Settings, then Billing, with the Update button next to your card. These are Anthropic's steps from its billing FAQ:
- Click your initials or name in the lower left corner and choose Settings.
- Open Billing.
- Click Update next to your payment method.
- Enter the new card details and its billing address.
- Click Update to save.
Anthropic says the new card "becomes your default payment method" and pays every renewal after that. We read the Billing screen on a live Max account on 8 October 2026. Its Payment area says "Your default payment method is charged for subscription renewals, extra usage, and auto-reload." The card carries a Default badge, and an Add payment method button sits next to it. Neither was there on 1 September. We didn't add a second card, so we can't tell you how Claude treats one.
If the change won't stick, check three things Anthropic documents. A plan bought in the iPhone or Android app keeps its card in your Apple or Google account, so Claude's Update button won't reach it. On a Team plan, Anthropic says an organization Owner changes the card, under Organization settings, then Billing. And your billing address comes from the card itself, so a new card can also move the address you're taxed at.
Moving from a store plan to a card on claude.ai means ending the store plan first, since Apple or Google runs it. How to cancel Claude Pro has the iPhone and Android routes. Deleting an old card is a separate job, covered in how to remove a card from Claude.
What happens when a Claude payment fails?
A failed payment drops your Claude account to the free plan. Anthropic's FAQ lists it as one of two reasons a paid account shows as free. It sends you to Settings, then Billing, to see the payment status and update the card.
Anthropic's decline article lists what to check before you retry. The billing address has to match the one your bank holds, and Anthropic warns that even "a missing accent mark" can trigger a decline. A 3D Secure prompt has to be finished. The card's billing country has to be on Anthropic's supported list, which Claude not available in your country walks through. And Anthropic says it doesn't get detailed reasons from the banks.
So your bank holds the answer. Our guide to paying for AI when your card is declined sorts the decline codes by who can fix each one. A refund is its own flow, set out in how to get a Claude Pro refund.
How do you pay for Claude from Japan, Korea, Vietnam or India?
In Japan, claude.ai takes credit and debit cards, and PayPay works only through the app. PayPay has paid for App Store purchases since May 2023 by its own account, and Google lists PayPay on Play for apps and digital content, without naming subscriptions. Since 1 April 2026 Anthropic also adds 10% Japanese consumption tax to every plan price, per its JCT notice. Its qualified invoice registration number is T7700150134388. The tax shows in yen on the invoice, and your billing currency doesn't change. Anthropic says a business can claim the tax back, and that you can't for personal use. Our Claude receipt guide shows where that invoice lives and how to put a company name on it.
In South Korea, the web checkout takes cards, and Kakao Pay, Naver Pay and Toss reach Claude only through app store billing: Apple lists all three, and Google lists them for apps and digital content, without naming subscriptions. Apple also lists PAYCO and phone billing with KT, LG U+ and SK Telecom. A card that's refused or won't update goes through the same Billing steps above.
In Vietnam, Apple lists MoMo, ZaloPay, VNPAY and ShopeePay, and Google lists MoMo, ZaloPay, ShopeePay and VTC Pay. Apple's Vietnam list doesn't name Apple Pay at all. On claude.ai, it's a card or nothing.
In India, UPI works through both stores, and Google says it can pay a monthly plan through UPI Autopay. In the Netherlands, iDEAL can't pay a plan in either store. Apple takes it only to add funds, and Google says it "can't be used to pay for subscriptions." Both stores list PayPal there.
- Check whether Anthropic, Apple or Google bills your plan before you change anything
- On claude.ai, use a credit or debit card whose billing address matches your bank record
- For PayPay, MoMo or Kakao Pay, subscribe in the Claude iPhone app; UPI also works in the Android app
- Change the card under Settings, Billing, Update; the Default card pays renewals, extra usage and auto-reload
- After a failed payment, open Settings, Billing to see the status and update the card there
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Claude Pro with a prepaid card?
Anthropic doesn't say. Its Pro and Max FAQ names only credit or debit cards, while its Team FAQ, updated 7 October 2026, accepts credit, debit or prepaid cards. If a prepaid card fails on Pro, a debit card from your bank is the option Anthropic documents.
Can I pay for Claude with Apple Pay or Google Pay?
Anthropic doesn't list either for claude.ai. Its FAQ names only credit or debit cards for web plans. In Claude for iOS, Apple bills your Apple Account, and Apple lists Apple Pay as an Apple Account method in Japan and the Netherlands, among others. In the Android app, Google Play's own methods apply.
Can I change the currency Claude bills me in?
Yes, but only by letting the plan end. Anthropic's invoice article says to set the plan to cancel at the end of the term, wait for it to end, then buy Pro or Max again. The new plan then uses the currency that new subscribers in your region are offered.
Can someone else pay for my Claude plan?
Not with a gift right now. Anthropic's gift article, updated 6 October 2026, says gift plans are currently unavailable to purchase, with no date for their return. A gift bought earlier still redeems at claude.ai/gift/redeem without a card and expires 365 days after purchase.
