Can you gift Claude Pro? Off sale since 6 October, and what still works

In brief

No. Anthropic stopped selling Claude gift subscriptions between 5 and 6 October 2026, and its help center gives no date for their return. A gift bought earlier still redeems at claude.ai/gift/redeem within 365 days. The closest working substitute is an Apple Gift Card, since Claude Pro costs $20.00 a month in the US iPhone app.

When did Anthropic stop selling Claude gifts?

Anthropic took Claude gift subscriptions off sale between 5 and 6 October 2026. We read every copy of its gift article that the Internet Archive holds, from 30 December 2025 onward. The copy saved on 5 October still sold gifts. The copy saved on 6 October opened with the notice that's still there today: "Gift subscriptions are currently unavailable to purchase." Gifts had been narrowing for months before that.

Each date is the first archived copy that shows the new wording, so a change could be a few days older than its dot. In December 2025 the article said "Anyone can purchase a gift subscription," even without a Claude account. By 1 April 2026 it said gifts were for Free, Pro and Max users. By 4 May it said "most Pro and Max plan users," and that Free users and Team or Enterprise members couldn't buy. Through all of it the offer itself stayed the same: Pro, Max 5x or Max 20x, for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, sent by email or as a link.

The live article, read on 25 October 2026, says the pause "applies to all accounts, so there's nothing you need to fix on your end." It adds: "We don't have a date to share yet for when purchasing will be available again." Anthropic hasn't said why. We won't guess.

What can you give instead of a Claude gift subscription?

An Apple Gift Card is the closest thing to a Claude gift you can buy today. Every route we checked on 25 October 2026 is below, with US prices.

The prices come from the Claude app's US App Store listing, where Anthropic PBC is the seller. It lists monthly Claude Pro at $20.00 and yearly Claude Pro at $214.99. On the web, Claude's pricing page charges $17 a month billed yearly, "$200 billed up front." So a year bought through Apple costs $14.99 more than the same year bought on claude.ai. That's the price of paying with a gift card.

Can an Apple or Google Play gift card pay for Claude Pro?

Yes, on an iPhone it usually can. Apple says an Apple Account balance can "pay for subscriptions to apps from the App Store." The person you're giving to redeems your Apple Gift Card on their own Apple Account, opens Claude, and subscribes to Pro in the app. Apple then bills the balance. Apple adds two warnings in the same article. "Some subscriptions might not be charged to your Apple Account balance," and some purchases still need a card on file.

Google Play is weaker for this. Its subscription help says Split Payment combines Play balance with another method only on "the initial subscription sign up or upgrade payment." After that, "only your primary payment method and any backups you've configured will be charged." So a Play gift card covers the first month of Claude Pro on Android. Their own card pays every month after.

Both store cards carry one trap for later. Anthropic's redeem article tells anyone who pays through the iOS App Store or Google Play: "you'll need to wait until that subscription ends before you can redeem a gift subscription." If Anthropic reopens gifts, a recipient who started Pro in the app can't use a new gift until that app plan runs out. The redeem article says the gift "won't expire while you wait." The gift article still lists a 365 day expiry from purchase. Anthropic doesn't say which rule wins.

Does a Claude gift bought before October still work?

Yes. A Claude gift bought before the pause still redeems at claude.ai/gift/redeem, on the web, for 365 days from the day it was bought. The gift article says "No credit card is required for the recipient to redeem," and the redeem article says any Claude account can take the gift, whichever email it was sent to.

What happens next depends on the plan the person already has. Anthropic's redeem article, updated 16 March 2026, sets out five cases:

Recipient already hasGift receivedWhat happens
No plan, or FreePro or MaxThe account moves to the gifted plan for the gift's length
Pro on the webProPro is extended by the gift's length
Pro on the webMaxMax for the gift's length, then back to Pro; unused Pro time becomes account credit
Max on the webPro, a lower tierThe gift's value becomes credit on future invoices
Max on the webMax, same or higherMax is extended or upgraded

Two limits catch people out. One gift redeems at a time, because the article says "It's not possible to redeem multiple gifts at one time or stack redemptions." And redeeming fails inside the Claude app, so the fix for most errors is to sign in on the web.

Can you share your Claude Pro account instead?

No. Anthropic's Consumer Terms, effective 8 October 2025, say "You also may not make your Account available to anyone else," and the same section bans sharing your login. The terms also set the age floor at 18, or the local age of consent to the service if that's higher. So Claude Pro can't be a gift for anyone under 18.

One plan does let you share a subscription that includes Claude. Poe's purchases FAQ says a subscriber can "Copy the invitation link and send it to whoever you want to join your subscription," and that "All members of your shared subscription will be able to equally use your points." Poe lists Claude Opus as one of its bots. It isn't the same as Claude Pro. The person gets Claude through Poe's app, with points shared with you, not Anthropic's own Claude app or its usage limits.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you gift Claude Max?

Not right now. Max 5x and Max 20x were gift options next to Pro, and the pause covers all of them, per Anthropic's help center on 25 October 2026. A Max gift bought earlier still redeems for 365 days. Claude Pro vs Claude Max compares what the two plans include.

Is there a Claude gift card on Amazon or at a store?

No. Anthropic's help center describes only gift subscriptions bought at claude.ai/gift, and those are off sale. We found no Anthropic gift card product. A store card that works is an Apple Gift Card for Claude in the iPhone app. Claude payment methods lists what each billing route accepts.

Can you gift Claude Pro to yourself?

Not while gifts are off sale. When they were on sale, the redeem article said any Claude account could redeem a gift, whichever email it went to. The cheapest Pro today is $200 billed yearly on claude.ai, $17 a month. Is Claude Pro worth it covers whether that year pays off.

Why is my Claude gift subscription not working?

Usually because it's being redeemed in the app or on an account with an active iOS or Google Play plan. Anthropic says gifts redeem only on the web and that a mobile plan must end first. A gift also fails after 365 days or if another gift is active. Paying for AI when your card is declined helps if the problem is the card instead.
