Paid for Claude Pro but still on Free: 6 causes, and the fix for each

In brief

If you paid for Claude Pro but are still on Free, Anthropic names two causes: you signed in with a different email, or the payment failed and the account was downgraded. In 77 public reports of paid Claude plans stuck on Free, filed March to October 2026, 31 involved a gift subscription, which that answer leaves out.

Which of these 6 causes matches what you see?

Anthropic answers this question in its paid plan billing FAQs, last updated 7 October 2026, with two checks. First: "You've logged in with a different email." Second: "Your payment method failed and your account was downgraded." The older standalone article, "I have a paid Claude Pro subscription but my account is showing free," still came up first in our search on 25 October 2026. Its address returned a 404. The table adds four more, from Anthropic's other help pages and the bug reports counted below.

How often do paid Claude plans get stuck on Free?

Often enough to fill a public bug tracker. Paying users have been filing these reports on Anthropic's Claude Code GitHub repository. On 25 October 2026 we searched it for issues whose titles name a paid plan and the Free plan. We found 77, filed between 5 March and 15 October 2026, and sorted each by the cause its title names.

Gifts are the cause Anthropic's two checks don't cover. April 2026 alone brought 23 gift reports, most saying a gifted plan dropped to Free a few days in. May to August brought 8 more. Max shows up in 46 titles and Pro alone in 24, so this isn't only a Pro problem.

GitHub isn't where these get fixed. Anthropic labelled 54 of the 77 "invalid" and closed 61 as not planned. Only 7 were still open when we looked. The repository tracks Claude Code bugs. Billing goes through Get help, which the last section covers.

Which email did you use for Claude Pro?

The email that paid is the one that got the receipt. Anthropic sends every invoice to your billing email, and its billing FAQ tells you to search for the subject line "Your receipt from Anthropic." Find that email, then sign in to claude.ai with it.

Then match the method. Anthropic's Pro sign up steps offer two buttons: "Continue with email" and "Continue with Google." If you made the account with Google, choose Google again. Anthropic also says to try "any alternative emails you may have used to create your paid account."

Why did Claude Pro drop to Free after a renewal?

Claude Pro drops to Free when a renewal payment fails, and Anthropic says so in the second of its two checks. Open Settings, then Billing, and look at the latest invoice. On the web, Anthropic only takes credit and debit cards. If your bank blocks the charge, there's no other way to pay there.

Our Claude card declined page matches each payment message to its fix. If your bank refuses AI charges in general, the guide to paying for AI when your card is declined covers the bank side. As of October 2026, a Pro renewal is $20 a month, or $200 billed up front for a year, per Claude's pricing page. That's the amount to look for on your statement.

Why isn't my Claude gift subscription showing?

A Claude gift only works when you redeem it on the web while signed in to the account you want upgraded. Anthropic's gift redemption article says a free account "is upgraded to the gifted plan immediately." So a gift that never shows up usually landed on another account, or it's one of the failures above.

Anthropic stopped selling gifts between 5 and 6 October 2026, and its help center gives no date for their return. A gift bought before then still redeems for 365 days. Our page on gifting Claude Pro covers the pause and what still works.

Four of Anthropic's rules trip people up. "Gift subscriptions can only be redeemed on the web." If you pay through the App Store or Google Play, "you'll need to wait until that subscription ends before you can redeem a gift subscription." You can't "redeem multiple gifts at one time or stack redemptions." And a gift "will expire 365 days after the purchase date," though Anthropic adds that "Your gift won't expire while you wait" for a mobile plan to end.

If the gift applied and then vanished, that's the April 2026 pattern in our count. Don't redeem a second code to test it. Contact support with the gift code and the dates it worked.

Bought Claude Pro in the iPhone or Android app?

Then Apple or Google holds the subscription, not Anthropic. The billing FAQ says so up front: "If you subscribed through Claude for iOS or Claude for Android, your payment is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play." Your receipts and payment method live in your store account, and so does the cancel button.

The plan still belongs to the Claude account you were signed in to when you bought it. Sign in to the app with that account first. If the web shows Free while the app shows Pro, compare the email in both before anything else. Refunds for app purchases go through the store too, as our Claude Pro refund guide explains.

How do you reach a person at Anthropic about billing?

You start with Fin, Anthropic's AI support bot, and ask it to pass the case on. Anthropic's support article gives the path: click your name in claude.ai, choose Get help, then "Send us a message." It also says "Fin will pass your inquiry along" when a case needs Product Support. There's no phone line and no live chat.

Say three things in your first message: the invoice is marked Paid, the account shows Free, and here is the invoice number. Then wait in that same thread. Anthropic warns that "Opening a second request for the same problem creates a duplicate that has to be re-triaged," which slows the answer down.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does Claude Pro take to activate after payment?

Anthropic doesn't publish a waiting time. Its gift article says a free account is upgraded "immediately," and its billing FAQ treats a paid plan showing Free as something to check, not wait out. If a refresh and a fresh sign in don't show Pro, work through the email and billing checks, then contact support.

Can I change the card after a failed Claude Pro payment?

Yes. Open Settings, then Billing, click Update next to the payment method and enter the new card. Anthropic says the new card becomes your default for every renewal, and there's no separate remove button. Our guide on how to remove a card from Claude covers the old card.

Does Claude Pro include API credits?

No. Claude Pro covers claude.ai, the desktop and mobile apps, and Claude Code, and Anthropic bills the API separately in the Console. Anthropic says Max and Team plans include monthly API credits. Our Claude Pro limits page covers what Pro does include.

Should I file a GitHub issue if Claude Pro shows Free?

No, use Get help in claude.ai instead. Anthropic labelled 54 of the 77 paid but Free reports we counted on its Claude Code repository "invalid" and closed 61 as not planned. The repository tracks Claude Code bugs, and billing cases go to Product Support through Fin.
