The reason this question has no direct answer
Gemini has no sign up of its own, no separate login and no account page. It runs on the Google account you already had, which means there is no Gemini account to close, and every article promising to close one is describing something else.
Google's own community SERP shows people arriving at this exact wall. The top results are a Gemini Apps Community thread, a Reddit post whose title is mostly an expletive, and a guide titled "Delete Gemini AI Account (Keep Your Google Account)", which is the intent in a sentence.
So the question splits into two, and almost everyone wants the first:
- Get rid of what Gemini stored about you. That is Gemini Apps Activity, it lives in your Google account, and this page is about it.
- Get rid of the Google account itself. That takes Gmail, Drive, Photos, YouTube and every sign in that runs through Google with it. It is a Google account action, not a Gemini one, and it is almost never what someone typing "delete gemini account" actually means.
Where your Gemini history actually lives
When you are signed in and Keep Activity is on, Google stores your prompts as Gemini Apps Activity in your Google account. Two doors reach it and they open the same page:
- gemini.google.com, then Settings & help, then Activity.
- myactivity.google.com/product/gemini directly.
The delete control sits above the list and offers more precision than most people expect: All time, Last hour, Last day, or a Custom range. Beside any single day there is a delete for that day, and beside any single entry a delete for that item.
One detail worth knowing before you scroll: Gemini Live chats store more than text. Google says deleting a Gemini Live activity also deletes its audio, its transcript, and any video and screenshares that went with it. Deleting the activity deletes those with it, which is the good news in this section.
Turning it off still leaves 72 hours of history
Turning Keep Activity off is the setting most people are really looking for, and it lives on the same Activity page as the delete controls. Google documents the on state as what makes conversations save to your account in the first place, so switching it off is what stops new ones landing there.
What Google says next is the line to read twice: "Even when Keep Activity is off, your conversations will be saved with your account for up to 72 hours to allow Google to provide the service and process any feedback." Seventy two hours is a floor you cannot delete your way under.
This is not a loophole, it is a stated design. But it does mean "off" and "nothing stored" are different claims, and anyone turning the setting off for a specific reason should know which one they are getting.
How long Google keeps it if you do nothing at all
Gemini has an auto delete window, and its default is longer than most people would guess.

Change it from the auto-delete option on the same Activity page, where Google offers 3, 18 or 36 months or Don't auto-delete activity.
Three months is the setting to pick if you want the benefit of history without an eighteen month tail. It survives a change of laptop and a couple of ongoing projects, and it clears itself without you remembering to.
What survives a deletion, and what to clear separately
Deleting activity is narrower than it sounds, and Google lists the gaps rather than hiding them.
A Gem outlives its conversations. Deleting a chat with a Gem does not delete the Gem itself. If you built one on something sensitive, remove the Gem too.
A shared chat outlives the chat. Deleting a shared conversation does not delete the public link it created, which means the thing other people can reach is still reachable. Revoke the link separately, and treat that as the urgent half if the sharing was the mistake.
One thing Gemini gets right that its rivals do not: because there is no account to delete, there is no point of no return either. OpenAI says deleted ChatGPT accounts cannot be reactivated at all, and Anthropic says a deleted Claude account cannot be recovered afterward. Perplexity and xAI both give you 30 days to walk it back by signing in again. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity costs you the history and nothing else.
A work or school account is not yours to set. If you use Gemini through Google Workspace, your administrator controls the activity settings, and Google says you may not be able to change the retention period or even see how long chats are kept. Can I delete my Gemini account without deleting my Google account?

Does turning off Keep Activity stop Google storing my chats?
Not entirely. Google says that even with Keep Activity off, conversations are saved with your account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service and process feedback. That activity does not appear in your Gemini Apps Activity page.
How long does Google keep my Gemini history by default?
Activity older than 18 months is auto deleted by default. You can change the window to 3 or 36 months, or turn auto delete off so nothing is removed until you delete it yourself.
I deleted a chat but the shared link still works. Why?
Because they are separate objects. Google states that deleting a shared chat does not delete the public link it created. Revoke the link on its own, and do that first if the sharing was the actual problem.
Does deleting my Gemini activity cancel Google AI Pro?
No. The plan is a Google One membership and is cancelled from Google One settings, reached from gemini.google.com under Settings & help, then Manage subscription. Deleting activity changes nothing about the billing.
Why can I not change the retention setting on my work account?
Because your Google Workspace administrator controls it. Google says work and school users may be unable to change retention settings or even see how long their chats are kept. The controls described here apply to personal Google accounts.
