How to delete your Claude account when Claude will not let you

Quick answer

Claude will not delete an account with a live paid plan. Cancel first under Settings, then Billing, wait for the paid period to lapse, then open Settings, then Account, and choose Delete account. Anthropic's help centre sets that order. Deletion is permanent and the account cannot be recovered.

The message that stops most people, quoted exactly

Open claude.ai, click your initials in the lower left, choose Settings, then Account. On a paid plan the deletion row does not offer a plain delete. Read live on 2 September 2026 on a Max account, it reads:

"To delete your account, please cancel your Claude Max subscription first."

The Delete account button sits beside that sentence. Anthropic fills in the plan name rather than showing a generic error, which tells you the block is deliberate rather than a bug you can click through.

The same panel holds two other rows worth knowing about while you are there: Log out of all devices, which is the right tool if your worry is a shared computer rather than the account itself, and Organization ID with a copy button. Below them sits a Trusted devices list.

Cancel is not enough. The help centre says wait

The in app message says cancel first. Anthropic's help centre asks for one more thing, and the difference is a month of your time.

Its sequence, in order: cancel from your Billing settings, then "Wait until the end of your current subscription period", and only "Once the subscription lapses" delete the account.

So a cancellation on the second of the month does not make deletion possible on the third. Access runs to the end of the period you already paid for, and the account stays deletable only once that period is over. If you are deleting because of a deadline, a legal request or a compromised account, that is the timing to plan around, and support is the faster route.

The cancellation itself lives in the same Settings panel, one tab away: Settings, then Billing, then Cancel in the Cancellation section, at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Our how to cancel Claude Pro guide covers the iPhone and Android routes, which are billed by Apple and Google rather than Anthropic and have to be cancelled there.

The three deletion paths, and where each control hides

The control is in a different place on each platform, and the mobile ones are not where the web one is.

Where you areThe pathThe confirmation
claude.ai on the webInitials lower left, Settings, Account, Delete accountFollow the prompts
Claude for iOSSettings, the Account section, Profile, Delete accountTap Delete
Claude for AndroidMenu top left, initials lower left, Profile, Account Actions, Delete AccountTap I Understand

Anthropic gives the same initials, Settings, Billing, Cancel route for web and Desktop, and names web or desktop as where to run the export.

One thing none of the three does: cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription. If you subscribed inside the iPhone or Android app, that billing lives with Apple or Google and survives the account, the same way it does at OpenAI and xAI.

What leaves with the account, and what you cannot get back

Anthropic's warning is one sentence and it is the whole risk: "Deleting your account is permanent. You'll lose access to your conversations, projects, and other saved data, and you can't recover the account afterward."

There is no grace period here. Perplexity gives you 30 days in which signing back in cancels the deletion, and xAI lets you restore an account within 30 days by logging in and confirming. Anthropic offers neither. Once it is done, it is done.

That makes the export the only step you cannot redo later, and Anthropic tells you to run it on web or desktop before deleting rather than after. Budget a few minutes for it even if you think the conversations do not matter, because the judgement of what mattered usually arrives later.

If your real goal is removing what the account holds rather than the account itself, deletion is the wrong size of tool, because Anthropic warns that it takes your conversations and projects with it and nothing comes back. The wider version of that worry, what should never reach a chat window at all, is covered in what never to paste into an AI chat. Our how to remove your card from Claude guide covers the payment method, which is a third separate action again.

When the delete button is missing entirely

Two cases where the control is not there, and both have a documented answer rather than a workaround.

The button says Contact support. Anthropic documents that some accounts show Contact support in place of a Delete button. Take the message at face value and open a support request rather than hunting for a hidden setting.

You have more than one account on the same email. This is more common than it sounds, usually a personal account and one created through a work sign in. Anthropic asks you to specify which accounts you want deleted when you contact support, because it cannot guess.

If the plan rather than the product is why you are leaving

Deleting an account is a strong signal about the subscription, not usually about the model. The cheaper version of the same decision is worth two minutes first.

Run the stack through the AI subscription savings calculator, then read is Claude Pro worth it if the honest question is whether you would come back.

Whizi vs Claude Pro is the direct comparison and Whizi pricing has the numbers: Pro is $19.99 a month billed yearly, $239.88 for the year, with Claude Sonnet next to GPT, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek. The trade to know before you delete anything: Claude Opus sits on the Powerhouse tier, $34.99 a month billed yearly, not on Pro, and Anthropic's own Projects and Artifacts stay with Anthropic. If those are what you use Claude for, this comparison is one to lose deliberately.

Workflow checklist
  • Export your conversations and projects before anything else
  • Cancel in Settings, Billing at least 24 hours before the renewal date
  • Wait for the paid period to lapse, since cancelling alone leaves the delete control blocked
  • Cancel any App Store or Play subscription separately, because deletion never reaches it
  • Open support instead if the panel shows Contact support rather than a delete control
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not delete my Claude account?

Because a paid plan is still running. Claude shows the message "To delete your account, please cancel your Claude Max subscription first", with your own plan name in it. Cancel in Settings, Billing, wait for the period to end, then delete.

Do I have to wait after cancelling before I can delete?

Yes. Anthropic's help centre says to cancel, wait until the end of the current subscription period, and delete once the subscription lapses. A cancellation does not free the delete control on its own.

Can I recover a deleted Claude account?

No. Anthropic states that deletion is permanent, that you lose access to conversations, projects and other saved data, and that the account cannot be recovered afterwards. There is no restore window.

Where is the delete control in the Claude mobile apps?

On iOS, open Settings, find the Account section, tap Profile, then Delete account, then Delete. On Android, open the menu at the top left, tap your initials at the lower left, tap Profile, then under Account Actions tap Delete Account and confirm with I Understand.

Does deleting my Claude account stop an App Store charge?

No. A subscription bought inside the iPhone or Android app is billed by Apple or Google, and deleting the Anthropic account does not reach it. Cancel in iOS Settings or the Play Store before you delete.

My panel says Contact support instead of Delete. What now?

Some accounts require Anthropic's team to complete the deletion, and it says so in your account settings when that applies. Open a support request, and if you hold more than one account on the same email, name which ones you want deleted.
