AI subscription price history: ChatGPT Plus never moved from $20, the top plan rose to $500

In brief

ChatGPT Plus has cost $20 a month in the US since it launched on 1 February 2023, and Claude Pro has held at $20 since September 2023. The top of the ladder rose from $20 to $500 (ChatGPT Pro 500, 29 September 2026). Only five existing plans changed list price: three bundle rises and two Google cuts.

Which AI subscriptions have changed price since 2023?

X raised Premium+ twice and Microsoft raised Microsoft 365 Personal and Family once, while Google cut AI Ultra and AI Plus. No $20 plan moved. Every other entry in this AI subscription price history is a new plan that a vendor added above or below the ones it already sold.

Both of the rises on X came as Grok got better. TechCrunch called the first one, which took effect on 21 December 2024, the largest price rise since Elon Musk bought the platform. The second came the day after Grok 3 launched in February 2025. Microsoft's rise was the first it had made on Microsoft 365 Personal and Family since it launched them, and it was the price of putting Copilot into Word, Excel and Outlook. Google's two cuts went the other way. It took AI Plus down by the same 37.5% that X had put on Premium+ 18 months before.

Two launches aren't in the table because they started outside the US. OpenAI sold ChatGPT Go first in India, on 19 August 2025, at Rs 399 a month. Google sold AI Plus first in Indonesia, on 4 September 2025, at Rp 75,000. If you want what each of these plans costs today, AI subscription statistics lists all of them side by side. The models that the plans unlock are dated in the AI model release timeline.

Has ChatGPT Plus ever changed price?

No. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month in the US, the price OpenAI launched it at on 1 February 2023, and its help center still lists "Price: $20/month (billed monthly)" as of October 2026. OpenAI doesn't sell Plus by the year. Its Go help page says it doesn't support annual billing for "ChatGPT Go, Plus, or Pro subscriptions", so a year of Plus costs $240.

A rise was planned once. In September 2024, The New York Times reported internal OpenAI documents that put Plus at $22 by the end of 2024 and $44 by 2029. It didn't happen. OpenAI built a ladder around the $20 instead: Pro at $200 in December 2024, Go at $8 in the US in January 2026, a $100 Pro tier in April 2026 and Pro 500 at $500 in September 2026.

The price stayed put. What you get for it didn't. OpenAI changes the models and limits on Plus without changing the price, and in April 2026 VentureBeat reported that it rebalanced Plus usage of Codex across the week while launching the $100 tier. If you're deciding between the rungs, ChatGPT Plus vs Pro sets the limits side by side.

ChatGPT Pro price history: $200, then $100, then $500

ChatGPT Pro launched at $200 a month on 5 December 2024 and is now three plans at $100, $200 and $500. OpenAI added the $100 tier on 9 April 2026. It paused new sign-ups to the $200 plan on 10 September 2026, when TechCrunch reported that demand for its new Astra model was straining capacity. On 29 September 2026, at DevDay, it reopened the $200 plan and launched Pro 500.

OpenAI's Pro tiers help page says "Pro 500 offers the highest included usage of the three plans", and it's the only Pro plan with Ultrafast. The $200 plan kept its price and is losing half its allowance. The Next Web reported that from 30 October 2026 Pro 200 includes 10 times the Plus allowance in ChatGPT Work and Codex, down from 20 times. That's the largest cut in this record that never touched a price tag.

Has Claude Pro gone up in price?

No. Anthropic launched Claude Pro on 7 September 2023 "for a monthly price of $20 (US) or £18 (UK)", and claude.com/pricing still shows "$20 if billed monthly" in October 2026. Annual billing is cheaper: $17 a month, with $200 billed up front. Anthropic's pricing page doesn't say when it started offering the annual rate.

Anthropic grew its ladder the same way OpenAI did. It added Claude Max on 9 April 2025 at $100 for 5x the Pro usage and $200 for 20x, and its help center lists the same two prices today. Max is billed monthly only. If Pro's limits are what you're weighing, is Claude Pro worth it runs the numbers.

How Google renamed Gemini Advanced and then cut the price

Google has sold its main Gemini plan at $19.99 a month under two names since 8 February 2024. It launched Gemini Advanced that day inside a new Google One AI Premium plan "for $19.99/month", with a two month free trial. At Google I/O on 20 May 2025 it renamed AI Premium to Google AI Pro, kept the price and launched AI Ultra at $249.99.

Google is the only vendor in this record that cut a price. At I/O on 19 May 2026 it wrote: "We're also reducing the monthly price of our top-tier AI Ultra plan from $250 to $200." The same post added a $100 Ultra plan, which Google's US plan page lists at $99.99. Three weeks later, on 8 June 2026, Google's Gemini subscriptions lead Vikas Kansal posted that AI Plus would drop from $7.99 to $4.99 and its storage would double from 200 GB to 400 GB.

Google also adds to what a plan includes while it keeps the price the same. As of October 2026, its US page lists AI Pro at $19.99 with 5 TB of storage, which is more than the 2 TB the plan came with in 2024. At $4.99, AI Plus is now the cheapest standalone paid AI plan in this table.

Grok price history: from X Premium+ to SuperGrok to the X Subscription

Grok is the one assistant whose price history mostly happened inside a social network subscription. It first rolled out to US subscribers of X Premium+, which was $16 a month at the time, on 7 December 2023. X raised Premium+ to $22 on 21 December 2024 and then to $40 on 18 February 2025, the day after Grok 3 launched. That's a 150% rise in two months. No other plan in this record went up as fast.

After that, xAI sold Grok on its own as well. SuperGrok arrived with Grok 3 at $30 a month, or $300 a year, and SuperGrok Heavy came out with Grok 4 on 9 July 2025 at $300. Press reports in March 2026 put a SuperGrok Lite at $10. Then, on 12 October 2026, xAI folded all of it into The X Subscription, with Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. It says the Premium tier carries "the benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and X Premium+, previously $90/month combined". If you're on an old plan, you can keep it. Whether the $30 plan is worth it to you is what is SuperGrok worth it works out.

What happened to Copilot Pro, Perplexity, Mistral and Meta AI

Microsoft folded its standalone AI plan back into Office. It launched Copilot Pro at $20 a month on 15 January 2024. A year later, on 16 January 2025, it put Copilot into Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and raised both of them by $3 a month in the US, to $9.99 and $12.99. On 1 October 2025 it launched Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 and wrote, "we'll no longer sell Copilot Pro." Support for the people still on Copilot Pro ended on 1 August 2026.

Perplexity has kept Pro at $20. When it launched Max at $200 a month on 2 July 2025, its post said "Perplexity Pro ($20/month) remains available". Its help center prices Max at $2,000 a year. We couldn't find a launch date for Pro on any Perplexity page, so the table starts its record with Max. Mistral launched Le Chat Pro at $14.99 on 6 February 2025. It renamed Le Chat to Vibe in May 2026 and kept the price: its pricing page still shows Pro at $14.99 in October 2026, or $5.99 for a verified student.

Meta was the last big name to charge. On 15 September 2026 it launched Meta One, with a Core plan at $7.99 and a Premium plan at $19.99 that gives "the most room to create content with Meta AI". Meta's announcement adds that "Meta AI will still be free for everyday use."

When a second $20 plan is the real cost

The $20 price held, but most people who want GPT, Claude and Gemini pay it two or three times. That's $59.99 a month for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro together. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month for 2,500 credits, with Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and ChatGPT Sol among 280+ models in one chat, and Starter is $15.99. It won't beat a single $20 plan if you only use one vendor's models, and it doesn't include vendor extras like Google's 5 TB of storage. How many AI subscriptions you need works through the stack.

Workflow checklist
  • To check a current price, open the vendor page in the source column, not a tracker
  • Quote a row with its date and source: prices in this record are US list prices before tax
  • App Store and Google Play prices can differ from the web price for the same plan
  • Look at the allowance as well as the price: ChatGPT Pro 200 halves its usage from 30 October 2026 at the same $200
  • For yearly billing, Claude Pro is $200 a year; OpenAI does not bill Go, Plus or Pro annually
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Did ChatGPT Plus go up in price?

No. ChatGPT Plus has been $20 a month in the US since 1 February 2023, and OpenAI's help center still lists "Price: $20/month (billed monthly)" as of October 2026. The New York Times reported in September 2024 that OpenAI planned $22 by the end of that year, and it didn't happen. Prices in other currencies differ: ChatGPT Plus price by country has them.

Has Claude Pro gone up in price?

No. Claude Pro launched at $20 a month on 7 September 2023, and Anthropic's pricing page still shows "$20 if billed monthly", or $17 a month billed annually with $200 up front. Anthropic added Max at $100 and $200 instead of raising Pro. Whether $20 buys enough is the question is Claude Pro worth it answers.

Can you pay for ChatGPT Plus yearly?

No. OpenAI's help center says it doesn't support annual billing for ChatGPT Go, Plus or Pro, so a year of Plus costs $240 at the monthly rate. Claude Pro is $200 a year billed up front, and Microsoft 365 Premium sells a yearly plan too. To total what your own stack costs a year, use the AI subscription cost calculator.

Has any AI subscription gotten cheaper?

Yes, two have, and both are Google's. Google cut its top AI Ultra tier from $249.99 to $199.99 on 19 May 2026 and AI Plus from $7.99 to $4.99 on 8 June 2026, doubling its storage to 400 GB. OpenAI's cheapest move was a new plan, ChatGPT Go at $8. The two cheap tiers are compared in ChatGPT Go vs Google AI Plus.
