Microsoft Copilot statistics: 30 million paid seats, 50 million GitHub users, and the counts Microsoft dropped

In brief

The headline Microsoft Copilot statistic is paid seats: more than 30 million for Microsoft 365 Copilot at the end of June 2026, double the 15 million Microsoft first disclosed six months before. GitHub Copilot had 50 million users. Microsoft last gave a Copilot user count, 150 million monthly users, in October 2025.

Microsoft 365 Copilot had over 30 million paid seats by June 2026

Microsoft gave no Copilot seat count until January 2026, three months after it last gave a Copilot user count. On the 29 July 2026 call Satya Nadella said "we now have over 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats." That's at most 6.7% of the 450 million paid Microsoft 365 work seats. Each row below gives the quarter that the figure covers, which is not the same as the day it was said, because Microsoft reports about a month after each quarter ends.

Each dot sits at the end of the quarter that Microsoft was reporting on, from the call transcripts on its investor site. The Users lane is Microsoft's own count of monthly users across its family of Copilots. It stops after September 2025. The GitHub lane mixes paid subscribers and all users, and each label says which one it is. Microsoft's fiscal year ends on 30 June, so the call on 29 July 2026 closed its fiscal 2026.

How many people use Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft's last count was over 150 million monthly users across its family of Copilots, for the quarter to September 2025. That figure lumps together work and home products. Three months earlier, Nadella had put the same group at over 100 million. Then the count stopped. On each of the calls since, Microsoft has told investors how fast some part of Copilot use was growing, but it hasn't said how many people that growth is a share of.

Apptopia's phone data is harsher. By its count, consumer Copilot lost 84% of its US daily users between March and July 2026, falling from 1.1 million to 181,000. Apptopia published that on 2 September 2026. That was just after Microsoft folded its consumer and work Copilot apps into one app. Microsoft's support page says chat history moves to "a single updated Copilot app". It also retires Podcasts and Deep Research in the consumer app from 18 August 2026.

Pew found that 17% of US adults say they ever use Copilot, in a survey run from 17 to 23 February 2026. Copilot does best with adults aged 30 to 49, at 22%. Among those under 30 it's 17%, and among those 65 and over it's 10%. ChatGPT, by contrast, reaches 61% of adults under 30 in the same survey.

On phones, Sensor Tower counted 79 million downloads of the Copilot app worldwide by July 2025, against 900 million for ChatGPT, per a ChannelNews report of Bloomberg's figures. We didn't find a newer download count from any firm that measures app stores. The merged app is also a fresh listing, so old totals won't carry over.

Which Copilot numbers did Microsoft stop reporting?

Microsoft has stopped giving five Copilot numbers it once reported. It dropped the user count for its family of Copilots after October 2025, and the GitHub paid count after January 2026. Its fiscal 2026 10-K says "Microsoft 365 Consumer subscribers was removed as a metric." Microsoft says it changed its metrics in the first quarter of fiscal 2026 "to align with how we manage and monitor certain businesses".

Microsoft 365 Copilot paid seatsover 30 millionApr to Jun 2026still reported each quarter since January 2026

The 89.0 million comes from Microsoft's June 2025 quarter results. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family have carried Copilot in the US since January 2025, so that count was the nearest thing to a paid consumer Copilot number. Paid seats run the other way. Microsoft never gave a seat count until January 2026, and it has given one on every call since.

How many paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats are there?

Microsoft 365 Copilot had over 30 million paid seats at the end of June 2026. Microsoft added about 5 million seats in the March quarter and about 10 million in the June quarter. Amy Hood, the CFO, said net seat adds "more than doubled sequentially". These seats are the paid add-on for work accounts. They don't include the free Copilot Chat or any consumer plan.

31 Mar 2026over 20 millionabout 5 millionabout 4.4%
30 Jun 2026over 30 millionabout 10 millionabout 6.7%

The last column is our sum. Microsoft gave its count of paid Microsoft 365 commercial seats, over 450 million, only for December 2025. It said the base grew 6% on a year earlier by June 2026, so the true June share is a little under 6.7%. That still means about 14 of every 15 paid work seats had no Copilot add-on. It's a small slice.

Big buyers drive it. Accenture had over 740,000 seats by April 2026, Microsoft's largest Copilot deal so far, per the April call. NHS England is rolling Copilot out to 505,000 clinicians and staff, Nadella said in July. The share of the Fortune 500 using Microsoft 365 Copilot went from nearly 60% in April 2024 to nearly 70% in October 2024 and more than 90% in October 2025.

Microsoft launched the add-on at $30 per user a month in November 2023. At that price, 30 million seats would bring in $900 million a month. The real figure is lower. Copilot Business, the version for small firms, lists at $21, and big contracts get discounts. Microsoft doesn't report Copilot revenue on its own.

How many people use GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot had 50 million users by the end of June 2026, Nadella said on the July call. That's 2.5 times the 20 million it had a year before. GitHub itself has 225 million users, per the same call, so about 22% of them use Copilot (50 ÷ 225, our sum).

Paid subscribers grew 75% in the year to December 2025, so the year before there were about 2.7 million (4.7 ÷ 1.75, our sum). Microsoft hasn't given a paid count since then. In July 2026 it said only that GitHub Copilot revenue "accelerated over 60% quarter-over-quarter", and it didn't give a dollar figure. Two years earlier, in July 2024, Nadella had said Copilot was "already a larger business than all of GitHub was when we acquired it."

GitHub changed how it bills on 1 June 2026. As of that date, "all Copilot plans bill based on GitHub AI Credits consumed", per its changelog. Base prices stayed the same, GitHub said in its April notice. It also added a Copilot Max plan, which its plans page lists at $100 a month.

How much time does Copilot save at work?

Copilot saved UK civil servants 26 minutes a day on average, by their own report, in the largest public trial so far. The UK government gave 20,000 staff in 12 organisations a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence from 30 September to 31 December 2024. Its findings report, published on 2 June 2025, says "users observed a time saving of 26 minutes per day". It also says 82% would not want to return to how they worked before.

A smaller trial was less clear. The UK Department for Business and Trade ran 1,000 licences for three months from October 2024. Its evaluation found Copilot cut the time for drafting documents, summarising research and transcribing meetings. Generating images, scheduling and making PowerPoints saved no time. Both figures are self-reported or task-timed by the departments, not measured output, and Microsoft's own early-user surveys sit in the same category.

How much AI revenue does Microsoft make?

Microsoft's AI business passed an annual revenue run rate of $37 billion in the quarter to March 2026, up 123% on a year earlier. That's the last AI revenue figure Microsoft has given. It didn't repeat one on the July 2026 call. A run rate is one period's revenue scaled up to a year, so it isn't booked annual revenue.

Microsoft went four quarters without an AI run rate, and when it gave one again in April 2026 it was nearly three times the last one it had shared. It never said why. If $37 billion was up 123%, the figure a year earlier was about $16.6 billion (37 ÷ 2.23, our sum). Microsoft never said that number. In January 2026 Nadella said only that the AI business was "larger than some of our biggest franchises". Microsoft doesn't split out how much of the run rate is Copilot and how much is Azure AI.

Microsoft's whole company made $331.8 billion in fiscal 2026, the year to June, per its 10-K. Its operating costs rose $4.9 billion, and the filing names "higher Copilot advertising expenses" as one cause. In the June quarter, Microsoft 365 consumer cloud revenue grew 24%, per the results release.

What is Copilot's market share against ChatGPT and Gemini?

Copilot's market share is under 2% on both of the big traffic measures. StatCounter put it at 1.79% of AI chatbot referrals to websites in September 2026. Similarweb put it at 1.6% of generative AI website visits in August 2026. Survey data is kinder: Pew found 17% of US adults say they ever use Copilot.

The gap is no mystery. Copilot sits inside Windows, Edge, Word and Outlook, so a person who asks it a question in a Word document or from the Windows taskbar counts for Pew but never shows up as a visit to a chatbot website. StatCounter counts only clicks out from chatbots to other sites. Similarweb counts visits to the chatbot's own website.

The website count is also in flux. Similarweb's estimate for copilot.microsoft.com shows traffic down 12.41% in September 2026 on the month before, its overview says. In the same month, its estimate for copilot.com shows a rise of 823%. Microsoft is moving people to a new address, so a single domain will undercount Copilot for a while. Our AI chatbot market share page tracks every rival on each measure.

How has Copilot pricing changed since 2022?

Microsoft has changed Copilot's plans or prices eight times since 2023, and GitHub three times since 2022. The biggest shift came in 2025, when Microsoft stopped selling Copilot Pro and folded Copilot into Microsoft 365 plans instead. Copilot Pro is now gone. In 2026 both moved toward billing by usage on top of the seat price.

As of October 2026, Microsoft's plan page lists Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month, Family at $12.99 and Premium at $19.99. GitHub lists Copilot Pro at $10, Pro+ at $39, Business at $19 per seat and Enterprise at $39 per seat. Microsoft also says there's a free Copilot "subject to available capacity and limits". For what each app's paid plan adds, Copilot vs ChatGPT compares them side by side.

If you'd pay $19.99 for Premium mainly to chat, Whizi's Pro plan is one other route at $29.99 a month. It puts Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and ChatGPT's Sol model in one app, with 280+ models across plans. It doesn't include Word, Excel or OneDrive storage, which is a large part of what Premium's price pays for.

Where does each Copilot number come from?

We opened every figure on this page at its source between 17 and 18 October 2026. Seats, users, subscribers and run rates come from Microsoft's earnings call transcripts on its investor site, which we read for every quarter from fiscal 2024 Q2 to fiscal 2026 Q4. Revenue and the dropped metric come from Microsoft's fiscal 2026 10-K, filed with the SEC.

Traffic and app figures are estimates by StatCounter, Similarweb, Sensor Tower and Apptopia, and we've said whose each one is. The share of seats, the net seat adds, the 22% of GitHub users, the $16.6 billion year earlier figure and the 2.7 million paid subscribers are our own sums. Each one shows its working where it appears.

We left out the user counts that fill many Copilot statistics pages, from 33 million to 420 million. None of them traces to Microsoft or to a firm that says how it measured, and the roundups we checked that carry the 218 million figure credit it to Business of Apps, not to anything Microsoft has said. We cut them. Microsoft's next results, for the quarter to September 2026, may add or drop a number, and we'll update this page when they do.

  • Call the 30 million "paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats", work seats only, not Copilot users
  • Say the 150 million monthly users covers every Copilot product and dates from the quarter to September 2025
  • Label the $37 billion an AI business run rate, not Copilot revenue
  • Label StatCounter, Similarweb, Sensor Tower and Apptopia figures as estimates by those firms
  • Date each figure with the quarter it covers, not the day it was said
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many people use Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft last counted over 150 million monthly users across its family of Copilots, for the quarter to September 2025, and it hasn't given a count since. Pew found in February 2026 that 17% of US adults say they ever use Copilot. Apptopia measured 181,000 US daily users of the consumer app in July 2026. AI chatbot market share puts those figures next to every rival.

How many paid Copilot seats does Microsoft have?

Microsoft 365 Copilot had over 30 million paid seats at 30 June 2026, up from 20 million in March and 15 million in December 2025. That's at most about 6.7% of the 450 million paid Microsoft 365 work seats Microsoft last reported. The count leaves out the free Copilot Chat and every consumer plan. AI subscription statistics shows how many people pay for each AI plan.

How many people use GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot had 50 million users at the end of June 2026, per Microsoft's July earnings call, up from 20 million a year before. The last paid count was over 4.7 million subscribers in December 2025. Nearly 140,000 organizations used it by March 2026. Claude statistics tracks Claude Code, its main rival for coding work.

Is Copilot more popular than ChatGPT?

No. Pew found that 44% of US adults say they ever use ChatGPT against 17% for Copilot in February 2026. StatCounter put ChatGPT at 80.48% of AI chatbot referrals in September 2026 and Copilot at 1.79%. Copilot's reach comes from Windows and Office, which those traffic counts miss. ChatGPT statistics has OpenAI's own user counts.
