Google Gemini statistics 2026: 1 billion monthly app users

In brief

The Gemini app has more than 1 billion monthly active users, the top-line Gemini statistic as of October 2026, which Google announced on 11 August 2026. That is a net gain of about 1.34 million users a day from 400 million in May 2025. Google's AI Overviews, a separate product, had over 2.5 billion monthly users in May 2026.

We traced each Gemini statistic in this table to the Google post, survey or tracking firm that put it out. The date shows the period a number covers. For surveys and traffic data, that's earlier than the day it was published.

Don't add the Gemini app, AI Overviews and AI Mode together. Google counts each one on its own. The app number covers people who used the Gemini app in a month, and Google's August post counted more than 100 million active users on iOS, so it isn't an Android figure. AI Overviews are the AI answers at the top of Google Search results. AI Mode is the chat tab inside Search. Both run on Gemini models. One person can be counted three times.

Coverage blurs other lines too. When Google reported 950 million in July 2026, TechCrunch wrote that Gemini users had tripled from the year before. But the number Sundar Pichai said had tripled was daily active users. Monthly users grew 2.1 times over that year, from more than 450 million to 950 million. In its August post, Google called Gemini "the fastest-growing product in Google's history".

How fast is the Gemini app growing?

The Gemini app added about 1.34 million monthly users a day from May 2025 to August 2026, by our count from Google's own dated figures. Pichai said 400 million at I/O on 20 May 2025. Google said more than 1 billion on 11 August 2026. That's 600 million in 448 days.

The fastest full stretch ran from late July to late October 2025, when the app added about 2.04 million a day. That's when Google's Nano Banana image model went viral. On 8 September 2025, Josh Woodward, the Google vice president in charge of the Gemini app and Google Labs, said it had brought in 23 million first-time users. Appfigures counted 12.6 million Gemini downloads in the first half of that September, up from 8.7 million in all of August (TechCrunch, 16 September 2025).

Gemini's growth slowed in mid 2026. Between I/O in May 2026 and the July earnings call, the app added about 780,000 a day, the same pace as mid 2025. Similarweb's August 2026 update shows a dip too: Gemini's share of generative AI website visits fell to 25.6%, from 27.8% two months earlier. That's about where it stood in March, at 25.4%. Then Google announced 1 billion just 20 days after 950 million.

Treat that last jump with care. Google gives round numbers with "more than" or "over" in front, and it gives the day it announced each one, not the day the app crossed it. So every per day figure here is an average across the days between two announcements.

Daily use is growing faster than monthly use. In July 2026, Pichai said that the app's daily active users had tripled in a year. In May he said that daily requests were up more than seven times since I/O 2025. Google hasn't published a daily user count, though. The last one we have came from internal data that was shown at its antitrust trial: 35 million daily users in March 2025, up from 9 million in October 2024 (TechCrunch, April 2025). If you count from the day Bard became Gemini, 8 February 2024, it took the app 915 days to reach 1 billion monthly users.

Does Gemini have more users than ChatGPT?

No, ChatGPT still has more users than Gemini on every yardstick that measures both the same way. Pew Research Center found that 24% of US adults say they use Gemini, against 44% for ChatGPT, in a survey it ran from 17 to 23 February 2026. Gemini does best with adults aged 30 to 49, at 34%. ChatGPT peaks among adults under 30, at 61% (Pew, June 2026).

The two companies' headline numbers don't line up. Google's 1 billion counts the Gemini app's users over a month. OpenAI's 1.2 billion counts ChatGPT's users over a week, which is the stricter test, because a monthly count includes people who open the app once. OpenAI's side is on our ChatGPT statistics page.

The trackers put Gemini second, and the gap depends on what each of them counts. In its August 2026 update, Similarweb gives Gemini 25.6% of the visits to generative AI websites, to ChatGPT's 55.5%. That's up from 12.9% a year before. StatCounter counts the referrals that chatbots send to websites. It gives Gemini 10.91% in September 2026 against 80.48% for ChatGPT, which is nearly four times the 2.82% that Gemini had a year earlier (StatCounter).

Sensor Tower's estimate is lower than Google's own. Its State of AI 2026 report, which counts unique users across apps and the web, put Gemini at 27.7% of AI assistant users at the end of May 2026, or 662 million monthly users, MediaNama reported in June 2026. Google had said more than 900 million that same month. Sensor Tower also found people spend about 100 minutes a month in Gemini, against about 215 in ChatGPT and 120 in Claude (Sensor Tower). The full comparison is on our AI chatbot market share page, and Claude statistics has Anthropic's numbers.

Who uses the Gemini app, and for what?

Voice and images drive a lot of Gemini use. Google said on 11 August 2026 that 63% of Gemini app users talk to it. One in five Gemini Live interactions goes beyond voice to the camera or screen sharing. The app makes more than 150 million images a day.

Students use it with files. In the same post, Google said 38% of school requests in the Gemini app include an attachment. You'll find more numbers like it in AI in education statistics.

It isn't only an Android app. Google counts more than 100 million active users on iOS. Appfigures counted more than 137 million iOS downloads of Gemini in the 12 months to July 2026, TechCrunch reported.

On the web, Similarweb estimates 2.6 billion visits to gemini.google.com in September 2026 (Similarweb). That makes it the 17th site in the world, and the second of the US AI chatbot sites, behind chatgpt.com. The US sent the most desktop traffic to it (13.29%), ahead of Japan (6.94%), India (6.3%), Brazil (5.52%) and Vietnam (4.48%). Similarweb puts its audience at 58.09% male, and it says that 25 to 34 year olds are the largest group, at 27.88%.

Trust trails use. Across six countries surveyed in June and July 2025, 18% of people said they trust Gemini, against 29% for ChatGPT, the Reuters Institute found. Familiarity with Gemini ranged from 59% in the US to 36% in Denmark.

How many people use AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode had more than 1 billion as of May 2026, Sundar Pichai said at I/O 2026. Both of them are Google Search features that run on Gemini models. Neither of those numbers is a count of Gemini app users.

AI Overviews grew from over 1.5 billion users at I/O 2025 to over 2 billion monthly users in July 2025, in more than 200 countries and territories and 40 languages. AI Mode had over 100 million monthly users in the US and India in July 2025. By October 2025, after Google rolled it out in 40 languages, it had over 75 million daily users. Pichai repeated the 1 billion monthly figure on the July 2026 call.

People use AI Mode differently from the way they use regular Search. Their queries in it are three times longer than traditional searches, and nearly one in six of them use voice or images instead of text, Pichai said in February 2026.

For publishers, the clicks matter more than the users. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, and 18% of their Google searches showed an AI summary. When one appeared, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits, against 15% when none did. They clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits (Pew, July 2025).

How many tokens do Gemini models process?

Google's products processed over 3.2 quadrillion tokens a month as of May 2026, Pichai said at I/O. That's more than six times the 480 trillion of May 2025, and about 330 times the 9.7 trillion of May 2024. Google itself called the latest jump 7x.

29 Oct 2025over 1.3 quadrillionPichai, Q3 2025 call
19 May 2026over 3.2 quadrillionPichai at I/O 2026

Developer traffic is climbing fast. Google's model APIs handled 7 billion tokens a minute in October 2025. That rose to over 10 billion in February 2026, more than 16 billion in April, about 19 billion in May and about 22 billion in July. It's more than three times as much in about nine months.

Don't chart Google's developer count as one line, because the definition changed. Google said over 7 million developers were building with Gemini in May 2025, and that more than 13 million had built with its models by October 2025. In 2026 it switched to a monthly count: 8.5 million building each month in May, and more than 9 million in July.

The tools around Gemini are growing too. Nearly 500 of Google's Cloud customers each processed more than 1 trillion tokens in the year to July 2026.

How much does Gemini cost in October 2026?

The Gemini app is free, and Google sells three paid tiers for it in the US as of October 2026 (Google). Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro is $19.99, and Google AI Ultra is $99.99 or $199.99. Pro gets four times the usage limits of the free tier. The two Ultra tiers get 5 and 20 times as much as Pro.

For developers, these are the standard text prices on Google's Gemini API pricing page as of 7 October 2026. Its Batch tier takes 50% off each of them.

ModelInput per million tokensOutput per million tokensNote

Google's pricing page also tells you what happens to your data. It says that the content you send on the free API tier is used to improve Google's products, and that paid tier content isn't. That trade is covered in AI privacy statistics, and LLM API pricing statistics puts Gemini's prices next to the ones from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Google doesn't say how many people pay for Gemini. Alphabet reported 350 million paid subscriptions across all of its consumer services in April 2026, and it said YouTube and Google One were the main drivers. Pichai called that quarter the strongest yet for its consumer AI plans. Spending inside the Gemini app is small next to ChatGPT's. Appfigures put Gemini's worldwide in-app spending at about $11 million in April 2026, against $301 million for ChatGPT. That counts only purchases made inside the Gemini app. Google also sells its AI plans on the web and through Google One, and those sales aren't in it. You'll find the plan prices of every vendor in AI subscription statistics.

At work, Google had sold more than 8 million paid seats of Gemini Enterprise by February 2026, four months after it launched. Pichai said in July 2026 that nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use it.

Which Gemini model is newest, and how does it score across 30 languages?

Gemini 4 Argon is Google's newest model. Google announced it on 30 September 2026, but so far only trusted cyber defenders can use it. Google says that paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers will be the first to get it after them. Gemini 3.8 Flash came out in September 2026, and the top Pro model on the API is still Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview.

We tested Google's models on Whizi's Multilingual LLM Bench on 2 October 2026. It has 150 questions that we wrote from scratch, five in each of 30 languages, and each model ran them once at low reasoning. Gemini 3.1 Pro scored 67.3 out of 100, which put it second of the 17 models we ran. GPT-6 Astra led at 70.7. But the 3.4 point gap is smaller than either model's margin of error, which is about 7 points, so the two of them are effectively tied.

RankModelScoreMargin of errorCost of one run
1GPT-6 Astra (OpenAI)70.77.2$0.75
2Gemini 3.1 Pro (Google)67.37.4$1.34
3GPT-6 Sol (OpenAI)63.37.6$0.16
4Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic)60.77.7$0.47
5Gemini 3.8 Flash (Google)51.37.9$0.12

Gemini 3.8 Flash came fifth, 16 points behind 3.1 Pro, for under a tenth of the cost. A full run cost us $0.12 on Flash and $1.34 on Pro. Pro was also the dearest of the top five to run.

How much energy does a Gemini prompt use?

A median text prompt in the Gemini app used 0.24 watt-hours of energy, Google estimated in August 2025, from data it had for May 2025. It also put each prompt at 0.03 grams of CO2 equivalent and 0.26 milliliters of water, which it says is about five drops. Google compared that energy to watching TV for less than nine seconds (Google Cloud blog, 21 August 2025).

Google said the energy for a median prompt fell 33 times, and its carbon footprint 44 times, over the 12 months to May 2025. Google's post also shows how much the method matters. Counting only the chips doing the work gives 0.10 Wh, which Google calls "an optimistic scenario at best".

That's a 2025 number. We couldn't find a newer Google figure for Gemini 3 or later models as of October 2026. Our AI data center energy consumption statistics cover the wider picture.

How we compiled these numbers

We opened every figure at its source on 7 October 2026. Most come from Google itself: Pichai's earnings call remarks and I/O keynotes on Google's blog, the Gemini app's own posts, the Gemini API pricing page and Google's post on prompt energy. The rest come from Pew Research Center, the Reuters Institute, Similarweb, StatCounter, Sensor Tower and Appfigures, or from reporters a company gave numbers to. We name the outlet each time.

We dropped what we couldn't open at its origin. Several roundups list 12.6 million Gemini downloads as a September 2026 figure, but Appfigures' count is from September 2025. One news report put Pichai's 900 million at an I/O "in June", and I/O 2026 was on 19 May. We left out every number that only shows up on statistics aggregators. The growth pace, the token multiples and the share changes are our own arithmetic from the dated figures, and we'll update this page when Alphabet reports its next results.

How to cite these Gemini statistics

You can use any figure or table on this page, as long as you link back to it. Please credit the original source for numbers that came from someone else, too. A plain credit line like this works:

Workflow checklist
  • Name the Google count you mean: the Gemini app, AI Overviews or AI Mode
  • Check whether a figure is monthly, weekly or daily before you compare it with ChatGPT
  • Quote the date Google announced a figure, not the date a roundup repeated it
  • Read developer counts closely, since "have built" and "building each month" differ
  • Link Google's own post or Alphabet's call remarks, never a statistics aggregator
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many people use Gemini every day?

Google doesn't publish a current daily user count for the Gemini app. Pichai said on 22 July 2026 that its daily active users had tripled in a year. The last daily figure we have came from internal data that was shown at Google's antitrust trial: 35 million in March 2025, up from 9 million in October 2024.

Does Gemini have more users than ChatGPT?

No. In Pew's February 2026 survey, 24% of US adults said they use Gemini, against 44% for ChatGPT. Google's 1 billion is a monthly count, while OpenAI's 1.2 billion is weekly, which is a stricter yardstick, so the two headline numbers can't be compared directly.

Are AI Overviews users counted as Gemini users?

No. Google reports AI Overviews (over 2.5 billion monthly users in May 2026) and AI Mode (more than 1 billion) apart from the Gemini app (more than 1 billion in August 2026). All three run on Gemini models, and one person can show up in every count.

How many people pay for Gemini?

Google hasn't said. Alphabet reported 350 million paid subscriptions across all of its consumer services in April 2026, and YouTube and Google One led them, but it doesn't split out its Google AI plans. Pichai called that quarter the strongest yet for consumer AI plans, and he said the Gemini app was the main driver.
