Is SuperGrok worth it? Yes for video and X, not for text alone

In brief

SuperGrok is worth $30 a month if you want Imagine video, full-depth live X search or Grok Bot; for Grok text alone it is not, because free Grok already lists Grok 4.6. As of September 2026 xAI publishes no message, image or video count for any plan: you buy a weekly percentage bar, not a quota.

Is SuperGrok worth it? Yes for video and X, not for text alone

SuperGrok at $30 a month is worth it for three buyers: people who want Imagine video (30-second clips at 720p, and video is paid-only on xAI's own comparison table), people whose work runs on full-depth live X search, and people who want Grok Bot, which xAI added to every SuperGrok tier on 26 August 2026. For Grok text answers alone it is not, and xAI makes that hard to see. As of 27 September 2026 its pricing page, its checkout and its FAQ publish no message, image or video count for any consumer plan. You are buying a weekly percentage bar.

Two things in that table are missing from most reviews. SuperGrok Lite and SuperGrok Heavy carry no price on x.ai/pricing at all: the page shows $30 and $100 and routes Lite and Heavy buyers to a checkout, so the $10 and $300 come from the dated pricing trackers and from what our own cancel guide recorded in August. And the per-two-hour message counts you will read on page one for this query (50 on free, 80 on Premium, 120 on Premium+, 200 on SuperGrok) appear in no xAI document. The FAQ's one quantified consumer limit is about video: "720p videos automatically fall back to 480p once you hit the 720p cap for your tier."

What does SuperGrok get you over free Grok?

SuperGrok gets you a bigger share of one weekly usage pool, video generation, Expert mode and Grok Bot; the model is the same Grok 4.6 the free column lists. xAI's FAQ describes the pool as "one shared weekly usage pool that you can spend however you like across any Grok product" and dates it with the line "Rolling out in June 2026, Grok will now use a simpler, more flexible system for paid users." The pool shows as a percentage, broken down by Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and API, and resets on a weekly schedule shown in the Usage tab. When it is spent, the free-tier Chat and Voice limits, which are separate, keep working, and Extra Usage Credits start at $5, expire a year after purchase and are "priced at standard rates", so they cost more per action than the plan did.

xAI's checkout page describes the step up in relative terms only. Lite gives "2x longer conversations in Chat". SuperGrok gives "5x longer conversations in Chat", "Access our best model with higher limits", "Longer Voice conversations", "Faster replies", "More powerful coding tools", video "With HD 720p, 30-second video" and "Exclusive access to Grok Bot". Nowhere is the 2x or the 5x anchored to a number, which is why the same $30 feels generous to one Reddit thread and stingy to the next.

What a SuperGrok subscription includes changed ten times between May and September 2026

That chart is why a SuperGrok review from the spring reads wrong now. In five months xAI moved Grok Build from a subscriber beta to every plan including free, added a $100 tier between SuperGrok and Heavy, launched Grok Bot and then bundled it, shipped Grok 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7, and raised Imagine video to 1080p on Plus. Grok 4.7, announced on 21 September 2026 at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output, is listed for Grok Build, Cursor and the API; the pricing page still names Grok 4.6 as the subscription model.

Should you buy SuperGrok or X Premium+?

Buy X Premium+ if you would pay for X anyway, and SuperGrok if you would not. Premium+ is $40 a month and includes SuperGrok, so the X features cost $10 a month on top of the $30 Grok plan, or $95 a year on the annual prices, $395 against $300. X's help centre lists it under "Only for Premium+ Tier": "SuperGrok: Higher limits on the latest Grok models so you can keep going, plus access Grok Bot", and "You also get Imagine for videos and images, voice mode, and more."

The $8 Premium tier is the trap. X describes it as "increased usage limits on Grok" and nothing more: no SuperGrok, no Grok Bot, no Imagine promise. Two subscriptions from two companies both sell Grok and neither knows about the other, which is how people end up paying $38 or $70 a month for one assistant; how to cancel SuperGrok sorts out which one you actually have.

Heavy runs the bundle the other way. Its checkout lists "X Premium+ at no extra cost", claimed by connecting your X account, so a Heavy subscriber who was going to buy Premium+ anyway is paying $260 for the Grok part of the $300.

Is SuperGrok worth it for Imagine, coding or companions?

For Imagine video, yes; it is the one item on the list you cannot get free. xAI's comparison table gives the free tier image generation but not video, SuperGrok gets 720p clips of up to 30 seconds, and 1080p needs SuperGrok Plus at $100. Every clip draws on the same weekly pool as your chat, and the FAQ says "generating a high-quality video or running a long coding task uses far more" compute than a message, so a video habit eats the week. Images alone are a weaker reason to pay, since the free tier has them within its limits. Grok Imagine is one of eleven apps in our Sora alternative comparison, where it ranks 11th of 28 in the text to video arena, and xAI's developer API charges 8 cents a second for video.

For coding, no, not for SuperGrok specifically. Grok Build, xAI's terminal coding agent, has run on every plan including free since 19 August 2026, and Grok 4.7 landed in it first. What $30 adds is a larger pool for Build's long runs and Grok Bot, whose meter is separate: xAI says "Grok Bot comes with its own usage, separate from your Grok and Cursor plans, so anything you hand off to a Bot won't count against your existing usage." If the Bot is what you want, SuperGrok is the cheapest way in, and if it is Grok's coding model you want, the API or a coding tool that takes an xAI key is cheaper than a chat plan.

For companions, do not pay on the promise. xAI's FAQ still says "Companions are available on the iOS app only, and there are no plans to bring them to the web or Android", while a statement attributed to Grok on 24 July 2026 called the 3D avatar companions an experiment being retired, and xAI has published no post either way. Open the iOS app you own and check that the Companions tab exists before you spend $30 on Ani.

Who should pay $300 for SuperGrok Heavy?

SuperGrok Heavy is for someone who already runs out of SuperGrok Plus and wants the multi-agent model. xAI introduced it with Grok 4 on 9 July 2025 as "a new SuperGrok Heavy tier with access to Grok 4 Heavy - the most powerful version of Grok 4", and the checkout today promises "Highest usage at the fastest speed", "Larger team of agents collaborating to get you the best possible answers" and "Dedicated support & early access". Its exclusives do not stay exclusive: Build Mode was a Heavy-only early beta on 29 July 2026 and Grok Build was on every plan by 19 August.

Two warnings before the $300. Heavy's "highest" is still a pool, not unlimited; the FAQ's 720p to 480p fallback applies to "the 720p cap for your tier", Heavy included. And the FAQ says "Large unexpected invoices are often a SuperGrok Heavy yearly subscription, not API usage", which is the $3,000 annual plan renewing in one charge. How to get a SuperGrok refund covers xAI's form and its 5 to 10 business days; X Premium bought for the Grok access is "non-refundable, unless required by law".

When is a multi-model plan the cheaper way to Grok?

When Grok's text answers are what you want, a plan that sells Grok next to GPT, Claude and Gemini is cheaper than $30 and prints its meter. Whizi, which publishes this page, carries Grok 4.6 at 6 credits a message on Pro, $29.99 a month or $19.99 billed yearly, so a 2,500 credit month is 416 Grok messages, a number in the docs rather than a percentage bar, and a Grok message can be followed by a Claude or GPT one in the same chat (Grok in Whizi lists every Grok row and its plan gate). Developers do better still: at xAI's list price of $2 in and $6 out per million tokens, a standard 1,000 in, 500 out answer on Grok 4.6 costs $0.005 in the Whizi cost index (prices fetched 2026-08-20), so $30 of API credit is 6,000 answers.

Where that loses to SuperGrok: no Imagine (Whizi's own image generation is 100 a month on Pro and video is Powerhouse only), no Grok Bot, no Grok Build, no companions, and Whizi's web search reads the web rather than the X firehose, so the live X answers that make Grok worth asking stay with xAI. Grok vs ChatGPT is the longer read on where Grok's answers themselves win and lose.

So the rule. Pay $30 if you will make videos or live in X search every week. Pay $40 and take Premium+ if you would pay for X regardless. Pay nothing and use free Grok, plus one multi-model plan, if you want Grok's answers alongside other models. Pay $300 only after Plus has stopped you mid-week at least twice in a month, and never on the yearly plan first.

Workflow checklist
  • Name the job first: Imagine video, live X search or Grok Bot justify $30; text answers do not
  • Check whether you already pay X: Premium+ at $40 includes SuperGrok, Premium at $8 does not
  • Read the Usage tab after week one; the pool is a percentage and xAI publishes no count to compare it to
  • Confirm the Companions tab exists in your iOS app before paying for Ani
  • Start Heavy monthly, never yearly; xAI's FAQ names the $3,000 renewal as its usual surprise invoice
  • Keep the receipt that names the biller, because xAI, X, Apple and Google each refund differently
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is SuperGrok better than ChatGPT Plus?

SuperGrok is $10 a month more than ChatGPT Plus, and the extra buys live X search, 30-second 720p video and Grok Bot rather than a larger published message allowance, because xAI publishes none. For text work the two are different products at $20 and $30; SuperGrok vs ChatGPT Plus compares the two paid tiers line by line.

What does SuperGrok get you?

A larger share of one weekly usage pool, "5x longer conversations in Chat" than free in xAI's words, Expert mode, Imagine video at 720p for up to 30 seconds, longer voice sessions and Grok Bot. The model is Grok 4.6 on free and paid alike; Grok 4.7 is in Grok Build and the API as of September 2026.

Does SuperGrok allow NSFW?

Paying changes nothing in xAI's Acceptable Use Policy, effective 14 August 2026, which bans "Undressing or nudifying real persons", "Depicting likenesses of persons in a pornographic manner" and any sexualisation of children on every tier. Imagine's filters apply to subscribers too, and xAI reports suspected child sexual abuse material to NCMEC.

Is there a SuperGrok free trial?

No. As of September 2026 x.ai/pricing lists no trial, the free tier is the try-before-you-buy, and X says "we aren't offering free trials of Premium at this time". If you pay and change your mind, xAI's refund form quotes 5 to 10 business days; X Premium is non-refundable unless the law requires it.
