Grok usage limit reached: 6 separate limits, how each refills, and what works now

In brief

Grok's usage limit on paid plans is one weekly pool, shown as a percentage in the Usage tab of Settings, and it resets on the date that tab shows. Running it dry drops you to free Chat and Voice limits, which keep their own clock. As of October 2026, xAI publishes no message count for any plan.

Which Grok usage limit did you hit, and what works in the next minute?

Grok runs at least six separate meters, and only the developer API puts a number on its own. So check where the wall appeared before you wait it out. Six walls, read from xAI's docs, pricing page and checkout on 11 October 2026:

Most readers are on the first row, and it has the softest landing. xAI's Grok FAQ says it plainly: "Hitting the weekly usage limit is not a hard stop." When the pool is spent, "paid features will pause until your weekly limit resets". You keep "Grok's free tier limits on Chat and Voice", which xAI says "are separate from your weekly usage limit". So text chat survives. What stops are the things you pay for, like video and the long Build runs.

xAI doesn't publish the wording of its limit screen, and two other messages look like a limit when they aren't. "Grok is under heavy usage right now" is a capacity banner, quoted by RoboRhythms in June 2026, and it can show up with budget left in your pool. "429 Too Many Requests" belongs to the API: xAI's rate limits page says "Exceeding any limit returns a 429 Too Many Requests error." Grok in a Tesla is the one meter nobody documents. One owner on the Not a Tesla App forum reported in May 2026 running out of in-car queries and said navigation requests counted, though the forum's staff said basic navigation shouldn't. Neither xAI's FAQ nor its plan pages mention the car.

How much Grok usage does each plan get?

No Grok plan gets a published message count. xAI describes every tier against another one, and only two of those descriptions carry a number. SuperGrok Lite at $10 a month gives "2x longer conversations in Chat". SuperGrok at $30 gives "5x longer conversations in Chat", per xAI's checkout page. xAI doesn't name the baseline. Free is the only plan below Lite, so that's the reading the chart takes.

Freewithin generous limits1xSuperGrok Lite, $102x longer conversations in Chat2xSuperGrok, $305x longer conversations in Chat5xeach square is one free chat allowance, from xAI's checkout page, October 2026

Above $30 the words go soft. SuperGrok Plus at $100 promises "Significantly higher usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice & Build" and "Priority access at peak times". SuperGrok Heavy at $300 promises "Highest usage at the fastest speed". The free plan on x.ai/pricing gets Grok "within generous limits". On X, Premium from $8 a month adds "increased usage limits on Grok", and Premium+ from $40 includes SuperGrok access, per X's help centre as of October 2026.

The counts that fill page one for this query, such as 10 or 20 free prompts every 2 hours, come from third party guides, the oldest from November 2024. None appears in an xAI document today. In June 2026 xAI moved paid plans to the one weekly pool, which RoboRhythms reports replaced the old per-tool daily caps. Is SuperGrok worth it weighs what each tier buys beyond the limit.

When does the Grok usage limit reset?

The paid Grok limit resets once a week, on a date xAI shows you rather than publishes. The FAQ says the pool "resets every week on a schedule shown in the Usage tab in Settings". That tab is on the web and in the mobile apps. xAI names no weekday and no time zone. So read the date in the tab, and don't count from Monday.

The free tier runs on a different clock. xAI says only that its Chat and Voice limits reset "on their own schedule". Independent guides describe a rolling window of about two hours, where capacity comes back as older requests age out. xAI hasn't confirmed that window anywhere.

The API has no reset at all in the daily sense. Its limits are per second and per minute, so a 429 clears as soon as your request rate drops. Tiers move only one way: "Once you qualify for a tier, you stay there permanently; tiers never downgrade." Extra Usage Credits keep their own calendar, too. They expire one year after purchase unless xAI states otherwise.

If the date in the Usage tab has passed and the bar still reads full, the fix isn't on your side. xAI's FAQ tells you to "contact support through the app or grok.com". Take a screenshot of the Usage tab first, since it shows the reset date you were promised.

Why does Grok use up the weekly limit so fast?

Grok meters compute, not messages, so one video can cost what an evening of chat does. xAI's FAQ is direct about it: "A chat message uses little compute; generating a high-quality video or running a long coding task uses far more." The Usage tab breaks the bar down by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine and Voice). The culprit is on screen.

Each feature has its own appetite. Imagine on SuperGrok makes "HD 720p, 30-second video", and Plus makes 1080p. Once you pass the 720p cap for your tier, xAI says "720p videos automatically fall back to 480p". Expert mode is sold from Lite up as access to "our latest, best model". Heavy's pitch is a "Larger team of agents collaborating" on your answers. On the API side, xAI caps its multi-agent model at 9 requests per second on Tier 0, against 37 for the same model running one agent.

DeepSearch, Grok's research mode, appears on none of the three xAI plan pages we read on 11 October 2026. It carries no published limit of its own. Grok Bot is the exception to all of this. xAI's 26 August 2026 post says "Grok Bot comes with its own usage, separate from your Grok and Cursor plans."

The pattern behind a fast wall is usually the same: video at 720p and long Build sessions in the same week. The fix runs the other way. Make drafts at 480p and render the keeper at 720p. Find the product leading the breakdown and cut there first. Check the Usage tab before a long coding task, not after it.

Should you buy Extra Usage Credits, upgrade, or use a second app?

Buy credits for one heavy week, and upgrade if the pool runs dry most weeks. xAI says so itself. Extra Usage Credits "are priced at standard rates, which means the cost per action is higher", while "Upgrading to a higher plan provides significantly more weekly usage at a lower cost per action". The smallest top up is $5 on the web. Auto Top Up adds credits when your balance gets low, so turn it off if you don't want a surprise charge.

The ladder as of October 2026: Lite $10, SuperGrok $30, Plus $100 and Heavy $300 a month from xAI, or Premium+ from $40 at X if you'd pay for X anyway. Two companies sell Grok and neither knows about the other's bill. How to cancel SuperGrok sorts out which one you're paying.

A second app is the fix when the work can't wait for the week to turn. Whizi, which publishes this page, sells Grok by the message. On Pro ($29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly) the Grok model costs 6 credits of a 2,500 credit month, which is 416 messages, printed in Grok in Whizi rather than shown as a percentage. Where it loses: no Imagine, no live X search, no Grok Bot or Grok Build, credits refill only when the UTC month turns, and every plan stops at 60 messages an hour.

A weekly wall once a month is a $5 top up. A weekly wall every week is a plan problem. A 429 is a backoff loop.

Workflow checklist
  • Name the wall first: the paid weekly pool, the free tier, Imagine video, Grok Bot, Grok inside X, or an API key
  • Open Settings > Usage on grok.com or in the app to see the percentage left, the product breakdown and your reset date
  • After the weekly pool runs out, keep chatting on the free Chat and Voice limits, which reset on their own schedule
  • Make video drafts at 480p, and cut back first on whichever product leads the Usage breakdown
  • On X Premium+, link the X account in grok.com Settings > Account so the SuperGrok benefit reaches your Grok login
  • On an API key, retry a 429 with exponential backoff; $50 of cumulative spend moves you to Tier 1 for good
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the Grok limit reset every 2 hours?

Not on a paid plan. Since June 2026, SuperGrok and the other paid tiers share one weekly pool that resets on the date shown in Settings > Usage. The free tier's Chat and Voice limits run "on their own schedule", which xAI doesn't publish. Independent guides describe a rolling two hour window there, but the 10 or 20 prompt counts quoted with it come from third parties, not xAI.

What is the Grok API rate limit?

The Grok API rate limit is set per model, in requests per second and tokens per minute, and it rises with your spend tier. As of October 2026, xAI's newest text models start at 150 requests per second and 50 million tokens per minute on Tier 0. Tier 1 starts at $50 of spend since 1 January 2026, and a tier never downgrades. Going over returns HTTP 429.

Does X Premium give you more Grok usage?

Yes, but X doesn't say how much. As of October 2026, Premium from $8 a month lists "increased usage limits on Grok", and Premium+ from $40 includes SuperGrok access. The Premium+ benefit reaches grok.com only after you link the two accounts. xAI's FAQ says "X Premium+ access only applies to the account linked with your X account."

Is there a trick to reset the Grok usage limit early?

No. xAI offers three ways past the weekly wall: Extra Usage Credits from $5, an upgrade to a bigger plan, or Auto Top Up. If the reset date in the Usage tab has passed and nothing refilled, contact xAI support through the app or grok.com.
