Gemini usage limit reached: 6 different limits, when each resets, and the fix that works now

In brief

Gemini's usage limit refills every 5 hours in the Gemini app until a weekly cap is spent. Other walls keep other clocks: daily in Gemini CLI, midnight Pacific on an API key, the 1st of the month on school accounts. As of October 2026, paid plans keep chatting on Flash-Lite at once; free accounts wait or upgrade.

Which Gemini limit did you hit, and what clears it in the next minute?

Check where the wall appeared before you wait. Google runs separate meters for the Gemini app, Gemini CLI, the Gemini API and work or school accounts, and each one clears differently. Google publishes counts for the CLI, school accounts and most paid Workspace licenses. For the personal app its $19.99 AI Pro subscribers use, it gives only "4x". Six walls, read from Google's own help pages on 3 October 2026:

Most readers are on the first row. It also has the fastest exit. Google's limits page says it plainly: "If you have a Google AI subscription and reach your limit, you can continue your conversation with Flash-Lite." Gemini lead Josh Woodward added on 28 May 2026 that Flash-Lite prompts "won't count against your quota", per 9to5Google. So you're free to lean on the smaller model while the 5 hour bar refills. Use it for the drafting, reformatting and short questions, and save the Pro turn for the hard part after the refresh.

Without a plan there's no fallback to step down to. From 9 October 2026, Flash-Lite is already the whole menu. Open Settings > Usage Limits at the bottom left of gemini.google.com to see how much is left. Then start the next chat fresh instead of continuing a long one. Chat length is one of the things the meter counts.

When does the Gemini usage limit reset?

In the Gemini app the limit resets every 5 hours until you spend a weekly cap. The weekly cap is the one that can lock you out for days. Google's wording on its limits page: "Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit." Google doesn't publish when your week starts. A full weekly bar doesn't care that a 5 hour window just turned over. Gemini CLI and API keys count by the day, and a school account counts by the month.

The odd thing about these clocks is which ones come with a number. Gemini CLI publishes 1,000 requests a day for a free Google login and 1,500 on AI Pro (Gemini CLI quotas, updated 18 June 2026). Workspace publishes up to 25 Pro prompts every 4 hours on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus. With Google AI Expanded Access the cap is up to 200 a day, and with AI Ultra Access 500 a day. Those are the two upgrades an admin can buy (Gemini with a work or school account). Business Starter gets only "Basic access", with no number. School accounts get 1,000 uses a month. The $19.99 personal AI Pro plan, the one most people hitting this wall are paying for, gets "4x higher than standard limits". The standard limit itself isn't stated anywhere Google publishes.

It used to be. Google's help page in September 2025 listed Gemini 2.5 Pro at up to 5 prompts a day free, up to 100 a day on AI Pro and 500 on Ultra, as Gigazine recorded on 8 September 2025. On 17 May 2026 the personal app moved to compute-based limits. Google's model access page dates the change: "Starting on May 17, 2026 there were changes to usage limits and model availability for Gemini Apps for users over 18." One derived number survives the switch: Ultra's top tier is 20x AI Pro, which is 80x the free allowance.

Why does Gemini hit the limit after only a few prompts?

Gemini hits the limit fast because the personal app meters compute rather than prompts. One heavy prompt can cost what twenty light ones do. Google lists what the meter counts: "the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat". It adds that "Some features (like media generation or Deep Research) will consume more of your usage." The effort setting is a fourth lever. Google lets you pick low, medium or high for each model, and high spends more.

The extreme case is on record. Android Authority reported on 26 May 2026 that a Google AI Pro subscriber spent an entire 5 hour allowance on one failed video prompt that ran for three or four minutes. Two days later Google answered the complaints by "capping the amount of quota a single prompt can use" on Gemini 3.1 Pro. It also stopped counting requests that end in an error, per Woodward's 28 May post. So a failed answer no longer costs you, and one long Pro prompt can't eat the whole window any more. Video, images and Deep Research still draw down the same bar as your text chat, though.

The pattern behind a fast wall is usually the same: Pro on high effort, inside a long thread, with a Deep Research report or an image along the way. The fix is the reverse. Route routine turns to Flash or Flash-Lite, and set effort to low for anything that isn't reasoning. Open a new chat when the task changes, and run Deep Research and media generation after the work you can't postpone.

How do you check your Gemini usage before you run out?

In the Gemini app, open Settings at the bottom left and choose Usage Limits, or go straight to gemini.google.com/usage. That page shows how much of your allowance is left. It's the only gauge Google gives personal accounts, since the limit has no prompt count to keep in your head. Google said on 28 May 2026 that more detailed usage breakdowns were coming.

Gemini CLI reports its own limit when you hit it and says when it resets, per Google's Gemini 3 on Gemini CLI page. On the Gemini API, the signal is the 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED error. Google's rate limits page (updated 2 September 2026) says "Requests per day (RPD) quotas reset at midnight Pacific time." If the daily cap was the cause, a request refused at 11:58 PM in California goes through at 12:01 AM.

Gemini CLI says "Usage limit reached for all Pro models": what now?

That message means the Pro share of your daily CLI allowance is spent. The fastest fix is to accept the switch to a Flash model and keep going. Google's CLI docs describe the menu you get at the Gemini 3 Pro wall: "you'll be given the option to switch to Gemini 2.5 Pro, upgrade for higher limits, or stop". When 2.5 Pro runs out too, "you'll see a message prompting fallback to Gemini 2.5 Flash."

The total is a separate ceiling. Google's Code Assist quota page (updated 30 September 2026) says the daily limits "are aggregated across all interactions with any model version or family (for example, Pro, Flash)". Once that total is gone, "no further requests can be made through these interfaces to any model until the quota resets." So a Pro wall still leaves you Flash. A total wall leaves you nothing until the next day. The totals: 1,000 requests a day on a free Google login, 1,500 on AI Pro or Code Assist Standard, 2,000 on Ultra or Enterprise, and 250 a day if you sign the CLI in with a free-tier API key.

Antigravity, Google's agent IDE, sits on yet another meter. Google's 5 December 2025 note gave Pro and Ultra subscribers "quotas that refresh every five hours". The free tier runs on a weekly limit. A wall there says nothing about your Gemini app bar, and the reverse holds too.

Should you upgrade, buy AI credits, or use a second app?

Upgrade only if the weekly cap is your wall most weeks. A 5 hour wall is cheaper to sit out on Flash-Lite. The ladder as of October 2026: Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month is 2x the standard limit, AI Pro at $19.99 is 4x, and Ultra at $100 or $200 a month is 5x or 20x AI Pro. Between the rungs, Google's subscriptions page now says "You can extend your limits by purchasing AI credits". It didn't list a price for the Gemini app on that page when we read it on 3 October 2026. Is Google AI Pro worth it works through what the $19.99 buys beyond the chat limit. Claude usage limit reached compares Gemini's 5 hour clock with Claude's and ChatGPT's.

A second app is the fix when the work can't wait for the week to turn. Whizi, which publishes this page, sells Gemini by the message instead of by compute. On the Pro plan ($29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly) a Gemini Pro answer is 10 credits of a 2,000 credit month, so 200 of them. A Gemini Flash answer is 2, next to Claude Sonnet and GPT on the same login (Gemini in Whizi). Where it loses: credits refill only when the UTC month turns over, and every plan stops at 60 messages an hour. The import tool takes ChatGPT and Claude exports but not Gemini history. There's no Veo video, no Gemini in Gmail or Drive, no storage, and nothing that replaces Gemini CLI.

A 5 hour wall is a Flash-Lite afternoon. A weekly wall most weeks is a plan problem. A daily CLI wall is a model choice, so put the Pro requests where they earn it.

Workflow checklist
  • Name the wall first: Gemini app, work or school account, Gemini CLI, or an API key; each refills on its own clock
  • On a paid personal plan, switch the model picker to Flash-Lite and keep the same chat going
  • Open Settings > Usage Limits in the Gemini app to see how much of the allowance is left before a long task
  • Start a new chat, set effort to low, and hold Deep Research and image or video generation until after the urgent work
  • In Gemini CLI, accept the fallback to Flash when the Pro share runs out; the daily total covers every model
  • On an API key, wait out a per-minute 429, or link a billing account for Tier 1 if the daily cap is the one that hit
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the Gemini limit reset every day?

Not in the personal Gemini app. It refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, so the wait can be a few hours or several days. Daily resets apply to Gemini CLI, to Gemini API keys (midnight Pacific time) and to Workspace accounts on AI Expanded or AI Ultra Access. Business Standard and Plus count Pro prompts every 4 hours. Limited school accounts reset on the first day of each month.

How many prompts per day does Gemini allow?

Google publishes no prompt count for personal Gemini app accounts as of October 2026. It says only that AI Plus is 2x, AI Pro 4x and Ultra 5x or 20x AI Pro on a compute-based meter. The published counts are elsewhere. Workspace Business Standard or Plus gets 25 Pro prompts every 4 hours, and only the AI Expanded or AI Ultra Access upgrade raises that to 200 or 500 a day. Gemini CLI allows 1,000 to 2,000 requests a day, and limited school accounts get 1,000 uses a month.

What are the Gemini usage limits on free vs Pro?

Google AI Pro gets 4x the free usage limit in the Gemini app, a 1 million token context window instead of 32k, and all three models, Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. From 9 October 2026, an account without a plan uses Flash-Lite only. Both refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap.
