xAI quotes 5 to 10 business days, which is slower than OpenAI's web route
xAI's FAQ, last updated 11 August 2026 and read on 1 September 2026, is unusually direct about refunds. For a SuperGrok plan bought on grok.com or through Google Play, xAI handles the refund itself: submit the xAI Refund Request form while signed in with the account that bought the subscription, and "Approved refunds are typically issued to your original payment method within 5 to 10 business days."
The comparison rows are OpenAI's own quoted processing times from its refund article, read on 2 September 2026, and they are the comparison a reader holding both plans will make. Perplexity's and Anthropic's refund articles quote no processing time at all. The full cross vendor picture is in getting a refund on an AI subscription.
Note what xAI does not publish: a refund window. There is no "within 14 days" line in the FAQ the way Anthropic and Perplexity write one. The form is a request, reviewed case by case, and the one hard exclusion is stated plainly: "xAI API credits are non-refundable."
Three companies bill Grok, and only one of them runs the form
The reason SuperGrok refunds confuse people is that Grok is sold by three different billers, and xAI is careful to say it does not control the other two.
| The charge | Who billed you | Where to ask | What the biller says |
|---|---|---|---|
| SuperGrok or SuperGrok Heavy on grok.com | xAI | xAI Refund Request form | 5 to 10 business days to the original card |
| SuperGrok bought in the Android app | Google Play, refund handled by xAI | xAI Refund Request form | "Refunds are handled by xAI" |
| SuperGrok bought in the iOS app | Apple | reportaproblem.apple.com | "Apple handles all refunds for purchases made through the App Store" |
| X Premium $8 or Premium+ $40 | X | X's help centre | "All subscriptions are non-refundable, unless required by law" |
The X row is the one with no give in it. xAI's FAQ says X, not xAI, is responsible for processing a Premium refund "where required by law", and that xAI has no operational oversight of X's service. In billing terms Premium is X's product and Grok is a feature of it (X's help page lists "increased usage limits on Grok" under what Premium includes), and X directs app store buyers to Apple or Google for "all app related refund and cancellation issues."
The Android row surprises people in the other direction: Google took the money, but xAI issues the refund. Submit the form to xAI rather than opening a Play dispute, and sign in with the account that made the purchase, because xAI says a subscription "may not appear if you're signed in with a different login."
The invoice that is usually not a mistake
xAI's FAQ carries a line most refund guides miss: "Large unexpected invoices are often a SuperGrok Heavy yearly subscription, not API usage. Check the purchase date and your subscription history before disputing."
A SuperGrok Heavy yearly subscription bills the year in one charge, and it renews on the anniversary of the purchase. A bank dispute on a charge that turns out to be your own annual renewal is the case xAI is warning about, which is why it asks you to check the purchase date and the subscription history first.
The second source of phantom double charges is two accounts. xAI notes the subscription "is tied to the account you bought it with", that X Premium+ access "only applies to the account linked with your X account", and that a subscription bought with Apple's private relay email is only recognised if you sign in with Apple. xAI calls the missing plan "a common mix up, not necessarily a double charge", and the fix is to sign in with the account that paid.
A refund on the plan does not stop Auto Top Up
Since June 2026 SuperGrok runs one weekly usage pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and the API, and sells Extra Usage Credits from a minimum of $5 on the Usage tab when it runs low. Auto Top Up adds credits automatically "when your balance gets low", at an amount and monthly cap you set.
That is a second recurring charge on the same card, on its own trigger, and it is independent of the subscription. Cancelling the plan does not switch it off, and a refund on the plan does not reach it. Top up credits also "expire one year after purchase", and xAI prices them at standard rates, so "the cost per action is higher than the effective rate you get from the included weekly usage in your plan."
Before submitting the refund form, open Settings then Usage, check the Extra Usage Credits balance, and switch Auto Top Up off. Then cancel the plan itself at grok.com/?_s=billing, or through Settings then Billing. If the Manage Subscription button does nothing, xAI's own advice is an incognito window or another browser, because ad blockers break the billing portal. How to cancel SuperGrok covers each biller's cancel path, and how to remove your card from Grok covers the card that Auto Top Up charges.
If the refund is because SuperGrok was the wrong plan
Most SuperGrok refund requests come from one of two places: the plan was bought for a single project, or the buyer wanted one strong model and found it sold as a weekly usage pool. Grok vs ChatGPT is the honest read on where Grok wins.
If the goal was access to Grok rather than the SuperGrok product, Whizi carries Grok 4.6 at 6 credits a message on its Pro plan, $29.99 a month or $19.99 billed yearly, next to GPT, Claude Sonnet, Gemini and DeepSeek, with a 2,000 credit monthly allowance. The honest losses: Grok's Imagine, Voice and Build products and the X account link stay with xAI, and a Whizi message on Grok is a text answer. Whizi vs Grok lays that out plainly.
- Identify the biller from the statement: xAI, X, Apple or Google
- Sign in with the account that bought the plan before submitting the xAI Refund Request form
- Check the purchase date on a large invoice before disputing it; it is often a Heavy annual renewal
- Switch off Auto Top Up under Usage, because a refund on the plan does not reach it
- Cancel the plan separately at grok.com/?_s=billing, in a browser without an ad blocker
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a refund for SuperGrok?
For a plan bought on grok.com or through Google Play, submit xAI's Refund Request form while signed in with the account that made the purchase. Approved refunds return to the original payment method in 5 to 10 business days. For a plan bought in the iOS app, only Apple can refund it, through reportaproblem.apple.com.
Is there a refund window for SuperGrok?
xAI publishes no fixed window. Its FAQ describes a request reviewed by xAI and states that API credits are non-refundable. Anthropic and Perplexity publish explicit windows; xAI does not, so submit the form as soon as the problem is clear.
Can I get a refund on X Premium for Grok?
X states that all subscriptions are non-refundable unless required by law, and xAI says X, not xAI, is responsible for X Premium refunds. If you bought Premium in an app, X sends you to Apple or Google.
Why did xAI charge me more than I expected?
xAI says large unexpected invoices are often a SuperGrok Heavy yearly subscription rather than API usage: a yearly plan renews as one large charge on the anniversary of the purchase. Check the purchase date and subscription history before opening a dispute.
Does a SuperGrok refund cancel my subscription?
No. Cancel separately at grok.com/?_s=billing or under Settings then Billing, and switch off Auto Top Up under Usage, which charges the same card independently of the plan and keeps running after a cancellation.
