Which is better, Claude Pro or Perplexity Pro?
Claude Pro is better if you make things with AI, and Perplexity Pro is better if you look things up. Both cost $20 a month. What splits them is the model list. Perplexity's model page, a snapshot "as of October 17, 2026", gives Pro seven search models from seven labs, and its one Claude is the current Claude Sonnet. Claude Opus and Claude Fable are marked Max only. Claude Pro includes Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, and it adds Fable on usage credits, per Anthropic's pricing page.
The scores are the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index at max effort, read on 25 October 2026. Two points is a small gap. A month ago it was wider: Perplexity's September list gave Pro the older Sonnet, a generation back, and our Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus comparison was written against that list. So if you passed on Perplexity Pro because its Claude was a generation behind, that's no longer true.
| US plans, read 25 October 2026 | Claude Pro | Perplexity Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed $200 a year | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually |
| Claude models | Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5; Fable 5.1 on usage credits | Sonnet 5.5 only |
| Other labs | None | GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7, Nemotron 3.5 Super VL |
| How usage is metered | A session that resets every five hours, plus a weekly limit | Pro Search and uploads: "Weekly limits (average use)"; Research: "Monthly limits (average use)" |
| Web search | On every plan, with citations | On every query, with citations |
| Context window in chat | 1M tokens on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 | Not published |
| Coding agent | Claude Code, from the same usage pool | None; Computer runs on credits (4,000 bonus on Pro) |
| Images and video | No photo generation | Image generation; video "limited" |
| Refund | Non-refundable, except 14 days in the EEA and UK | 24 hours on monthly, 72 hours on annual |
Six of Perplexity Pro's seven models come from labs other than Anthropic, OpenAI's GPT Sol and xAI's Grok among them. So the $20 Perplexity plan isn't a Claude plan. It's a GPT, Claude and Grok plan with a search engine on top.
Can you use Claude Opus on Perplexity Pro?
No, Perplexity Pro doesn't include Claude Opus. Its 17 October 2026 table marks Claude Opus and Claude Fable "No" for Pro and "Yes" for Max. The Max help page puts that plan at "$200/monthly or $2000/annually". So Opus costs ten times as much on Perplexity as it does on Claude.
Even Claude Sonnet isn't quite the same model inside Perplexity. The help center says Perplexity "integrates these models with its own search, citations, tools, prompts, safety systems, and usage limits," and that "a model in Perplexity can behave differently from the same model in the provider's standalone product." You get Sonnet's weights with Perplexity's prompt in front of them. It also says "The model selector in Perplexity is always the source of truth for your account", so check the picker on the day you pay.
Claude Pro gives you the other half of Anthropic's range. Its pricing page lists Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and Fable on Pro, with Fable billed from usage credits "at standard API rates". At Anthropic's API price of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, a Fable answer of 1,000 tokens in and 500 out costs 3.5 cents. Claude Opus is inside the flat $20.
How do Perplexity Pro and Claude Pro usage limits compare?
Neither plan prints a message count, and the two meter on different clocks. Claude Pro runs on a session limit that "resets every five hours" plus weekly limits that "reset once every week", per Anthropic's usage limits page. Its pricing page promises "at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free." Perplexity's plan table gives Free 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, and gives Pro only "Weekly limits (average use)" and "Monthly limits (average use)".
The pools behave differently too. On Claude, chat, Claude Code and the desktop app draw from one limit: Anthropic says your use of "all different Claude product surfaces" counts together. A long coding session can leave you short for writing that evening. On Perplexity, searches, uploads, Research and Comet Assistant tasks are separate rows, so heavy searching doesn't eat your Research runs. Perplexity does add that "access may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage" for its advanced models.
Here's a yardstick for what the flat fee is worth. Anthropic's API charges $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output for its current Opus. An answer of 1,000 tokens in and 500 out is therefore $0.014, and $20 buys about 1,430 of them, or 48 a day for 30 days. If you'd send fewer Opus answers than that, the subscription costs more than the meter. It isn't the plan's cap, which Anthropic doesn't publish. Claude Pro limits covers what happens when you hit the session wall, and Perplexity Pro limits does the same for each Perplexity pool.
Is Perplexity Pro or Claude Pro better for research?
Perplexity Pro is better for research on the open web, and Claude Pro is better for research inside files you already have. Perplexity searches before it answers, on every query. Its Pro page promises "10x as many citations per answer" over the free plan, and you can rerun one question on GPT, Claude or Grok in the same thread.
Claude searches too, and on every plan. Anthropic's web search page says "Every response includes citations", but in the new Claude app there's no switch, and Claude "searches the web when it helps". A question it thinks it can answer from memory gets no search. That's fine for a definition. It's a risk for a price that changed last week.
Claude wins once the sources are on your desk. Anthropic's context window page gives the current Opus, Sonnet and Haiku a 1M token window in chat on paid plans. It puts the 200K window it gives other models at "about 500 pages of text or more", so 1M holds a stack of reports at once. Perplexity publishes no window per plan.
Claude Pro also keeps those files organized. Its pricing page includes Projects "to organize your chats and documents", so a set of sources stays with every chat about them. Perplexity Pro's Pro page promises "Increased file and photo uploads" instead. Both take PDFs.
Which is better for coding, Claude Pro or Perplexity Pro?
Claude Pro is better for coding, because it includes Claude Code and Perplexity Pro has no coding agent. Anthropic lists Claude Code as a Pro feature on its pricing page and says it "shares the same usage limits" as chat. You run it in a terminal against a real repository.
Perplexity Pro does have two strong coding models in its picker, GPT Sol and Claude Sonnet, and they're fine for a script or a stack trace pasted into a search box. Its agent is Computer, which runs on credits: the pricing page gives Pro "4,000 bonus credits" and Max 35,000 bonus plus 10,000 a month. That's a tool for building documents and small apps. It isn't a day of work in your codebase. If you code for hours, Claude Pro vs Claude Max is the next question you'll have.
What do Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro cost per year, and can you get a refund?
Both cost $20 a month and about $200 a year. Anthropic sells Pro at "$17" a month with "$200 billed up front", and Perplexity's pricing page lists Pro at $17 a month "when billed annually". Perplexity's US App Store listing shows Perplexity Pro at $20.00 and $200.00.
The refund rules are where they part. Perplexity's refund page gives "up to 24 hours after the purchase date" on monthly Pro and a full refund "within 72 hours" on annual, or 14 days in the EU, UK and Turkey. It adds "we can't process secondary refund requests after a first one has been granted." Anthropic's refund page opens with "all payments are non-refundable", except as its terms or the law provide, and gives the EEA and UK 14 days, prorated by use.
So try Perplexity's annual plan inside three days. On Claude, buy monthly first, unless you're in Europe.
Should you pay for both, or one plan with both kinds of model?
Pay for both if you research most days and write or code most days. Claude Pro plus Perplexity Pro is $40 a month, or about $400 a year on both annual plans. That's the only way to get Claude Opus with Claude Code and Perplexity's search on every query at once.
| If you want to | Pick | Why, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Check a fact or price from this week | Perplexity Pro | It searches every query, with citations |
| Compare GPT, Claude and Grok on one question | Perplexity Pro | Seven labs in one picker |
| Write or edit a long document | Claude Pro | Opus 5.5, scored 58, in a 1M window |
| Code in a terminal | Claude Pro | Claude Code on the same plan |
| Use Claude Opus without paying $200 | Claude Pro | Opus is Max only on Perplexity |
| Get a refund if it's wrong for you | Perplexity Pro | 24 or 72 hours, against non-refundable outside Europe |
Whizi is the third route, and it's our product, so weigh it that way. Whizi Pro costs $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly, with a first week for $1.99. It puts Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet, GPT and Perplexity's own Sonar Pro in one picker, with web search on by default, and you can run two models side by side on one prompt. Credits per message vary by model and can change. Whizi loses to both specialists in plain ways: it has no Claude Code, no Comet and no Claude Fable on Pro. Whizi vs Perplexity Pro has the full columns.
