What is the difference between Perplexity free and pro?
Perplexity Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year, and as of September 2026 the difference from free is that you pick the model, you get "extended access" to Pro Search instead of a "very limited amount", you get Deep Research, image and video generation, and up to 50 file uploads per Project. That is Perplexity's own plan comparison, read on 27 September 2026. The line that decides the purchase is the one it leaves blank: Perplexity no longer publishes a number for either tier's Pro Search allowance. Two open source trackers that read its usage feed assume 200 or 300 Pro Searches a week, and Perplexity Pro limits lays out each pool, when it resets and the one mode with no quota.

Every cell is from perplexity.ai/hub/pricing, the help center's plan comparison and its credits and refunds pages, all read on 27 September 2026, in US dollars. The quoted words are Perplexity's; where a cell says no number is published, we looked and there is none.
The 40 a day comes from Perplexity's own price list, not from a review. Its API pricing page, read 27 September 2026, charges Sonar Pro $3 per million input tokens, $15 per million output tokens and $6 per 1,000 requests at low search context. A standard answer of 1,000 tokens in and 500 out is therefore $0.0165, call it 1.7 cents; at medium search context ($10 per 1,000 requests) it is 2.1 cents. So $20 is 975 to 1,200 Sonar Pro answers a month, 32 to 40 a day. That is a yardstick, not the plan's cap, because Perplexity does not publish the cap. Below 40 a day, the searching alone does not justify $20 at Perplexity's own metered price; what you are buying is the model picker, the uploads and Research.
Which AI models does Perplexity Pro include, and which two stay behind Max?
Pro lets you choose 8 of the 10 Search models Perplexity listed in its help center snapshot of 4 September 2026, and the two it withholds for the $200 Max plan are GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5, the current flagships from OpenAI and Anthropic.
| Search model | Provider | On Pro ($20) | On Max ($200) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonar 2 | Perplexity | yes | yes |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | OpenAI | yes | yes |
| GPT-5.6 Sol | OpenAI | no | yes |
| Gemini 3.7 Flash | yes | yes | |
| Claude Sonnet 5 | Anthropic | yes | yes |
| Claude Opus 5 | Anthropic | no | yes |
| Kimi K3 | Moonshot AI | yes | yes |
| GLM 5.3 | Z.ai | yes | yes |
| Grok 4.6 | xAI | yes | yes |
| Nemotron 3 Ultra | NVIDIA | yes | yes |
Two things to read alongside that table. First, Perplexity's own "What is Perplexity Pro?" page, last modified 3 September 2026, still advertises GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro, a generation behind the model list published a day later, which says "The model selector in Perplexity is always the source of truth for your account." Second, the same Pro page carries the sentence that matters more than any model name: "For Advanced AI model queries, access may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage." You are buying the picker, not a guaranteed allowance on what you pick. For comparison, Anthropic's Claude Pro lists Opus on its $20 plan as of September 2026, so the Opus class costs $20 direct and $200 through Perplexity.
Deep Research is the allowance that moved most. In February 2026 Perplexity rebuilt it as Advanced Deep Research, putting Max subscribers on Opus 4.6 Thinking and Pro subscribers on "4.5 Thinking gradually", and wrote in the help center: "Usage limits have been adjusted to allocate more computing power per session". MakeUseOf reported on 21 February 2026 what that meant for Pro accounts: Deep Research from roughly 500 a day to 20 a month (four a month for some), Labs from 50 to 25 a month, and file uploads from unlimited to 50 a week. As of September 2026 the help center gives Pro no Research number at all, and Labs has become "Create files and apps" with a "Limited amount" of queries every 30 days. If Research was the reason you were going to pay, it is the reason to test the free week of your own usage first.
What are the disadvantages of Perplexity?
The main disadvantage of Perplexity Pro is that its paid allowances are unpublished and have been cut without a price change, so you cannot know before paying how much Pro Search, Research or file work $20 buys this month. Four more follow from the help center itself.
The refund window is the shortest of any $20 AI plan we have written up: 24 hours on a monthly plan and 72 hours on an annual one, with the 14 day window only in the EU, UK and Turkey and 7 days in South Korea and Brazil. Perplexity's refunds page, modified 24 September 2026, adds "No exceptions for requests after this period" and says it will not process a second refund after a first one is granted. How to get a Perplexity Pro refund has the exact path; the short version is that the refund option appears at the cancel confirmation, so decide inside the first day.
Perplexity Computer, the agent it now sells hardest, is not really in the $20. Consumer Pro gets no monthly credits, only a one-time 4,000 credit bonus that expires in 30 days. Perplexity prices 100 credits at $1 and says a light Computer task uses 100 to 350 credits, so the bonus is roughly 11 to 40 light tasks and then you pay, or you stay in Ask, which uses no credits. Max gets 10,000 credits a month, which is $100 of Computer inside the $200.
The model roster is rented, and the two flagships are rented at the higher tier. Pro is an interface on other labs' models, so a model Perplexity drops or throttles ("access may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage") is gone from your plan on their schedule, and GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 sit behind Max. Perplexity vs ChatGPT goes into why that is the structural difference between an answer engine and the labs' own apps.
Support is the complaint that shows up in public ratings. Perplexity's Trustpilot page, read 27 September 2026, shows a TrustScore of 1.4 from 810 reviews with 83% at one star, most of them about billing and unanswered tickets. Trustpilot skews toward the unhappy for every software company, so treat it as the shape of the complaints, not the rate; the shape here is that the 24 hour refund window and the email-only support meet badly.
Is Perplexity Pro better than ChatGPT Plus?
Perplexity Pro is better than ChatGPT Plus for research you have to defend, and worse for anything you have to make, at the same $20. Perplexity puts numbered sources on every answer, searches before it writes every time, gives you Academic and Finance search scopes, Spaces with up to 50 files, and the Comet browser. ChatGPT Plus wins on drafting, code, long file sessions, memory across chats and, since September 2026, on getting OpenAI's newest model at $20, because Perplexity keeps GPT-5.6 Sol for Max. Is ChatGPT Plus worth it runs the same break-even on that plan, and Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus is the head-to-head.
The third option is a multi-model plan that runs the same labs' models with web search on by default. Whizi Pro ($29.99 a month or $19.99 billed yearly) carries five of Perplexity Pro's eight Search models by name (GPT-5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5, Kimi K3 and Grok 4.6), Perplexity's own Sonar Pro in place of Sonar 2, and GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5, which Perplexity keeps for Max; the first week is $1.99. Where it loses to Perplexity Pro: no Spaces, no Comet, no Deep Research product, and a Sonar Pro answer costs 20 of the plan's 2,500 monthly credits, so a Whizi Pro month is 125 Sonar Pro answers against Perplexity's extended Pro Search. If your day is mostly searching, Perplexity's own plan is the cheaper way to search; if your day is searching and then writing, how web search works in Whizi shows what the toggle does on the other models.
Who should pay for Perplexity Pro, by job
Researchers, analysts and journalists who hit the free Pro Search cap most days should pay, because at 40 or more Pro Searches a day the plan is cheaper than Perplexity's own per-answer price and the Academic scope, Spaces and Deep Research are not sold anywhere else in this form. Below that volume, the free plan plus a Comet download covers the reading, and the $20 is buying the picker.
Job seekers mostly do not need Pro. Comet is free since 2 October 2025 and does the form-filling and page-summarising that made people search "is perplexity pro worth it for job search"; Pro raises the Comet Agent allowance to "10x" free, which matters only once you are running dozens of agent tasks a week. The dated, sourced answers on salaries, company news and interview prep come from Pro Search, and the free "very limited amount" covers a normal week of applications.
Coders should not pay for Perplexity Pro as their coding tool. Pro Search includes a code interpreter and Claude Sonnet 5 is on the picker, but Opus is Max only, there is no repository context, and the labs' own $20 plans and their coding agents are built for the loop of edit, run, fix. Perplexity earns its place in a coder's day as the thing that finds the current docs page with a citation, which the free plan already does.
Students should never pay $20. Perplexity's Education Pro is $10 a month with SheerID verification, and its help center describes it as everything in Pro with "unlimited Pro Searches" and Learn Mode, a stronger wording than the "extended access" it gives the $20 plan. Verify first, then decide whether even $10 beats the free tier for a semester.
The decision rule: run the free plan for one working week and count the days you hit the Pro Search cap before you are done working. Three or more, pay monthly, not annual, and check the counter again a month later. Fewer, keep free plus Comet, and put the $20 toward the lab whose model you actually want to type into. If you pay and regret it, the clock is 24 hours.
- Count your Pro Searches on the free plan for a week before paying; 40 a day is where $20 beats Perplexity's own per-answer API price
- Check the model list article, not the Pro sales page, for what Pro includes today; GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 are Max only
- Buy monthly first: the refund window is 24 hours on monthly and 72 hours on annual outside the EU, UK, Turkey, South Korea and Brazil
- Expect no Computer credits after the one-time 4,000 bonus, and keep Comet in Search mode if you do not want to buy any
- Students: verify with SheerID and pay $10 for Education Pro, never $20
- Cancel before deleting the account; deleting does not stop the billing
Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage of Perplexity pro?
The advantage of Perplexity Pro over free is choosing the model yourself from 8 of Perplexity's 10 listed Search models, "extended access" to Pro Search instead of a "very limited amount", Deep Research, image and video generation, up to 50 file uploads per Project and a Pro support channel, for $20 a month or $200 a year as of September 2026. Citations on every answer and the Comet browser are free and are not the advantage.
Is Perplexity Pro worth it for students?
Not at $20, because Perplexity sells Education Pro to verified students and educators for $10 a month through SheerID, and its help center describes that plan as everything in Pro with "unlimited Pro Searches" and Learn Mode. A student who wants Pro should verify and pay $10; many will find the free tier plus the Academic search scope enough for a semester.
Can I get a refund if Perplexity Pro is not worth it?
Only inside the window: 24 hours after a monthly purchase or 72 hours after an annual one outside the EU, UK, Turkey, South Korea and Brazil, where it is 14 or 7 days. Perplexity writes "No exceptions for requests after this period" and will not grant a second refund after a first one. Request it from perplexity.ai/pro, Manage Subscription, Cancel Plan.
Is Perplexity Pro worth it for coding?
No, not as your main coding tool. Pro gives you a code interpreter inside Pro Search and Claude Sonnet 5 on the picker, but Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol are Max only and there is no repository or editor integration. Use the free plan to find current documentation with a citation, and put the $20 toward a plan built around a coding agent.
