Which $20 plan gives you more, Perplexity Pro or ChatGPT Plus?
Perplexity Pro gives you more models and ChatGPT Plus gives you more of one model. We read both vendors' plan pages and help centers on 27 September 2026, and the split is sharper than the usual "research versus writing" line: Perplexity Pro lets you pick from 8 models made by 8 different companies, and the two it keeps for its $200 Max tier are GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5. ChatGPT Plus is GPT-5.6 Sol, at three thinking levels, and nothing from anyone else. So the one OpenAI model Perplexity Pro withholds is the one ChatGPT Plus is built on.
The table is the two plans as their own pages describe them, in US dollars, as of September 2026. Where a vendor publishes a number we give the number; where it publishes a phrase we give the phrase in quotes, because the phrases are the story.
| Perplexity Pro | ChatGPT Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually (about $200 a year) | $20 a month; OpenAI says it does "not support annual billing" |
| Models you can pick | Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Grok 4.6, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Nemotron 3 Ultra (4 September 2026 table) | GPT-5.6 Sol at Instant, Medium and High; Extra High and the Pro models are "Not included" |
| Headline allowance, as published | Pro Search: "Weekly limits (average use)"; Free gets 3 a day, Enterprise Pro 400 a week | Thinking messages: "Thinking limits depend on your plan"; Free and Go get "unlimited everyday text chats" on Luna |
| Deep research | "Monthly limits (average use)"; Free 1 a month, Enterprise Pro 50; Pro runs on what Perplexity calls 4.5 Thinking, Max on Opus 4.6 Thinking | "Expanded deep research"; the counter in the product is the only number, resetting 30 days from first use |
| Files | Session uploads on "Weekly limits (average use)"; the Projects page says 5,000 files and 2.5 GB per Project on every plan, the plan page says "Up to 50 file uploads per project" on Pro | 80 uploads every 3 hours, 512 MB per file, 25 GB of storage, 25 files per Project |
| Context window | Not published per plan | 54K tokens on Instant, 256K on reasoning (Pro: 128K and 400K) |
| Images and video | Image and video generation included | "More complex and accurate image creation"; Sora video not listed on the Plus card |
| Memory | "More usage limits and memory" | "Expanded" memory and memory with past chats |
| Collaboration | Projects shared with up to 5 people on Pro, with owner, editor and viewer roles | Projects with 25 files each; OpenAI lists shared projects as a separate feature line |
| Browser agent | Comet, free for everyone since 2 October 2025; Comet Assistant queries on "Monthly limits" for Pro | A built-in browser and agent tasks are on OpenAI's plan feature list, with per-plan limits |
| Training on your chats | "Opt-out AI training available" | "Content is used to train our models: Opt-out available" |
| Refund window | 24 hours on monthly, 72 hours on annual; 14 days in the EU, UK and Turkey; 7 days in South Korea and Brazil | "Payments are generally non-refundable"; a discretionary refund within 7 days of an unused charge; EU, UK and Turkey rights carved out |
Two rows decide most purchases. If the work is finding out and defending what you found, the model row and the collaboration row favour Perplexity Pro: eight vendors to switch between mid-session, and a workspace five colleagues can read. If the work is producing text or code from what you already know, the model row favours ChatGPT Plus: OpenAI describes Sol as the model "for complex work across coding, knowledge work and research" and Terra, the OpenAI model Perplexity Pro gets, as "a balance of capability, speed, and cost", and Perplexity keeps Sol behind Max. The product-level comparison, before either price tag, is in Perplexity vs ChatGPT; this page is only about the paid tier.
How many Pro searches and messages do you actually get?
Nobody can tell you from the vendors' pages, because as of 27 September 2026 neither $20 plan publishes a number for its own headline allowance. That is the fact every page one result for this query gets wrong: they still quote 300 or more Pro Searches a day, or 200, and 25 deep research tasks a month, figures that have been off both vendors' pages for months.
Perplexity's plan comparison table (last modified 5 September 2026) has a Pro Searches row. It reads 3 a day for Free, "Weekly limits (average use)" for Pro, "Weekly limits (advanced use)" for Max, 400 a week for Enterprise Pro and 4,000 a week for Enterprise Max. The Research row does the same: 1 a month for Free, "Monthly limits (average use)" for Pro, 50 a month for Enterprise Pro, 500 for Enterprise Max. The only individual tiers with a printed number are the free one and the ones nobody buys alone. Perplexity's What is Perplexity Pro page adds that Pro buys "a high volume of daily searches", that Best mode "is available without quota limits", and that "For Advanced AI model queries, access may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage." If you already pay and keep hitting the wall, Perplexity Pro limits shows what Perplexity's usage feed reports for each pool and when each one resets.
OpenAI is the same shape with different words. Its GPT-5.6 in ChatGPT page, updated in mid September 2026, says Plus includes Sol at Medium and High but not Extra High, that Free and Go get "unlimited everyday text chats" on Luna, and, on the question you came for, "Thinking limits depend on your plan." The numbers on that page belong to the $100 and $200 Pro plans (50 and 200 GPT-6 Pro messages a week). The Plus card on chatgpt.com/pricing says "Expanded messages and uploads" and "Expanded deep research", with a footnote reading "Limits apply".
The one place both vendors still print numbers for Plus and Pro is files. OpenAI's File Uploads FAQ gives 80 uploads every 3 hours, 512 MB per file, 2 million tokens per document, 25 GB of storage per user and 25 files per Project on Plus (40 on Pro, 5 on Free). Perplexity's Projects page (last modified 28 September 2026) gives 5,000 files and 2.5 GB per Project, 100 MB per file, "the same for everyone, on every plan", and up to 5 collaborators on Pro. Perplexity's own plan comparison page disagrees with it: under Pro it lists "Up to 50 file uploads per project", and it prints the 5,000 figure only for Enterprise Max. So the honest count is 25 files per Project on Plus against either 50 or 5,000 on Perplexity Pro, depending on which of the vendor's two pages you open; the Settings tab of a Project shows the limit you actually have.
The quota is a dial the vendor turns without telling you. So buy on the refund window, not the spec sheet, and treat any search count you read in a review, including the ones in this paragraph, as a photograph of a moving thing.
Why pay $20 for ChatGPT?
You pay $20 for ChatGPT Plus to get GPT-5.6 Sol, and Sol is the whole case. Free and Go run GPT-5.6 Luna, the fastest and cheapest model in the family; Plus is where Sol appears, at Instant for quick answers and at Medium and High when you want it to think. On the same OpenAI page, Terra and Luna "are not selectable in standard ChatGPT conversations", so Plus is not a bigger menu, it is one better cook.
The second thing is room. OpenAI's pricing table gives Plus a 54K token context window on Instant and 256K on reasoning, against 27K on Free, which it translates as roughly 320 pages of input on a reasoning turn. That is the difference between pasting a chapter and pasting a book. The third thing is the toolset around the model: Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, memory that reads your past chats, image generation with Thinking, Codex and the desktop Work app, and GPT-6 Astra inside Work and Codex even though it stays out of the chat window on Plus. Is ChatGPT Plus worth it goes through those one by one.
What you do not get for the $20 is a second opinion. Every answer is an OpenAI answer, and when Sol is confidently wrong there is no Claude or Gemini one click away to disagree with it. You also do not get an annual discount (OpenAI: "we do not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance"), and you do not get much of a refund window: OpenAI's refund page opens with "Payments are generally non-refundable" and offers a discretionary refund only if you ask within seven days of an unused charge, with "no substantial use". Forgetting to cancel, it says, "does not by itself qualify."
Why is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for research?
Perplexity is better for research because it searches before it answers, cites as it goes, and lets you rerun the same question on a different vendor's model without leaving the thread. Pro Search, on Perplexity's own description, "conducts multiple searches across the web" and compiles "dozens of sources" into one answer with links, and the Pro plan claims ten times the citations per answer of the free tier. On ChatGPT Plus search is a tool the model may or may not call; on Perplexity it is the product.
The model list is the second reason, and it is worth reading Perplexity's own caveat before you buy on it. The help center says: "Models are subject to change. Perplexity adds new models and retires older ones as providers release them, so the list below is a snapshot as of September 4, 2026 and is not a commitment to keep any individual model available." On that snapshot Pro gets Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Grok 4.6, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3 and Nemotron 3 Ultra. Max gets those plus GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5. Perplexity's marketing page on 27 September already named newer models than the table, so read the table as the dated floor and check the picker on the day you buy. Deep Research, since the Advanced Deep Research update of September 2026, runs on what Perplexity calls 4.5 Thinking for Pro subscribers, "gradually", and Opus 4.6 Thinking for Max, and Perplexity says the "usage limits have been adjusted to allocate more computing power per session", which is vendor language for fewer runs.
Then there are the two things the $20 buys that no multi-model chat app copies. Comet, Perplexity's browser, has been free for everyone since 2 October 2025 ("Today we are releasing the Comet browser to the world, for free."), and Pro adds a monthly allowance of Comet Assistant tasks on top. Projects, which Perplexity renamed from Spaces in 2026 (the help page URL still says spaces), are shared workspaces with owner, editor and viewer roles, a 5,000 file library, and on Pro up to five collaborators; a research team of three can live in one.
Where Perplexity Pro loses, plainly: its OpenAI and Anthropic options stop at Terra and Sonnet 5, with Sol and Opus 5 on the $200 tier; its quotas are unpublished and its own page warns advanced models "may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage"; and the refund window is 24 hours on a monthly purchase and 72 hours on an annual one, with the help center noting "we can't process secondary refund requests after a first one has been granted". Read how to get a refund for Perplexity Pro before the annual charge, not after.
Should you pay for both, or for one multi-model plan?
Pay for both if you research most days and write or code most days, and $40 a month is less than an hour of your time. Perplexity Pro plus ChatGPT Plus is $40 a month, or $440 a year if you take Perplexity's annual rate, and it is the only combination on this page that gives you Sol at High and Perplexity's citation UI at once.
The alternative people ask about is one plan that carries the models from both. Here is the math in US dollars as of September 2026, with what each option gives up in the last column.
| Option | Per month | Per year | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity Pro + ChatGPT Plus | $40 | $440 (Perplexity annual, Plus monthly) | $20 a month of the pair goes to a model menu Perplexity already partly duplicates |
| Perplexity Pro + free ChatGPT | $20 | $200 | GPT-5.6 Sol: free ChatGPT runs Luna, and Perplexity Pro runs Terra |
| ChatGPT Plus alone | $20 | $240 | Citations by default, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Kimi, shared Projects, Comet allowance |
| Whizi Pro | $29.99, or $19.99 billed yearly | $359.88, or $239.88 | Comet, Perplexity's Projects sharing, ChatGPT memory and custom GPTs, Sol at Extra High, video generation below Powerhouse |
Whizi Pro is the row we run, so read it with that in mind. For $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly, it puts GPT-5.6 Sol, Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Grok 4.6, Kimi K3 and Perplexity's own Sonar Pro in one picker with web search on by default, and 2,500 credits a month buys about 125 Sol or Claude Opus answers at 20 credits each or 250 Claude Sonnet 5 answers at 10 (how credits work). It loses to the pair in four places: there is no Comet or any browser agent, no shared Projects (Whizi projects are yours alone, there are no team accounts), images are capped at 100 a month on Pro with video on Powerhouse only, and a heavy reasoning user who sends more than 125 Sol turns a month is better served by ChatGPT Plus alone, whose Thinking allowance is unpublished but built for daily use. Side by side compare is included on Pro. What it does that neither $20 plan does is show two vendors' answers to the same question, which is the check that catches a confident wrong one.
The verdict by job: research, coding, price
Research: Perplexity Pro. Citations on every answer, eight vendors to cross-check with, and a shared Project for the team. The counter-case is a researcher who needs long reports on demand; Deep Research on Pro now runs fewer, heavier sessions, and ChatGPT Plus gives you Sol at High with a 256K window to read what you already gathered.
Coding: ChatGPT Plus. Sol at High, Codex, and GPT-6 Astra inside Codex on Plus. Perplexity Pro's coding options are Claude Sonnet 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra with a code interpreter inside a search product, which suits a script and a bug rather than a day of building.
Price: Perplexity Pro if you will use it for a year, because $17 a month billed annually is the only discount either vendor offers, and the 72 hour annual refund window means you must decide in three days. ChatGPT Plus if you might quit next month, because there is no annual lock-in to regret. Whether Perplexity Pro clears the bar on its own is the question is Perplexity Pro worth it answers.
The rule we use: buy the plan whose headline model you would pick if the other one were free. If that is Sol, it is ChatGPT Plus. If that is "whichever of eight is right today", it is Perplexity Pro. If you honestly cannot choose, that is the pair, or a plan that stops asking you to.
- Decide by the model you would pick anyway: Sol means ChatGPT Plus, a choice of eight means Perplexity Pro
- Do not buy either plan on a search or message quota you read in a review; neither vendor publishes one for the $20 tier
- Buying Perplexity Pro annually: test it inside 72 hours, that is the whole refund window
- Buying ChatGPT Plus: decide in the first 7 days and before substantial use, or the charge is yours
- Count your reference files per piece of work: 25 per Project on Plus; Perplexity's Projects page says 5,000 and its plan page says 50 on Pro, so check the Project's Settings tab
- Turn off training on whichever you keep; both plans are opt-out, not opt-in
Frequently asked questions
Is Perplexity Pro better than ChatGPT Go?
For research, yes: ChatGPT Go runs GPT-5.6 Luna with no Sol, no model choice and search as an optional tool, while Perplexity Pro searches by default and lets you pick from eight vendors including GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 5. For writing on a budget, Go is the cheaper assistant and Perplexity Pro is not built for it.
Does Perplexity Pro include the same GPT model as ChatGPT Plus?
No. On Perplexity's 4 September 2026 model table, Pro includes GPT-5.6 Terra and Max includes GPT-5.6 Sol. ChatGPT Plus runs GPT-5.6 Sol at Instant, Medium and High. So the $20 Perplexity plan gives you OpenAI's mid model and the $20 OpenAI plan gives you its flagship.
Is the Perplexity Pro subscription worth it?
It is worth it if you run several sourced searches a day and want to switch models mid-thread; it is not worth it if most of your AI time is drafting or coding, where ChatGPT Plus wins. The annual rate is $17 a month, and the 72 hour annual refund window is the deadline for finding out.
Can I get a refund on Perplexity Pro or ChatGPT Plus?
Inside a short window, yes. Perplexity refunds a monthly purchase within 24 hours and an annual one within 72 hours, or 14 days in the EU, UK and Turkey and 7 days in South Korea and Brazil. OpenAI says payments are generally non-refundable, with a discretionary refund within 7 days of an unused charge and separate rights for EU, UK and Turkey residents.
