Is Perplexity Max worth it? Pro plus the same credits costs $120, and two Max models cost $20 elsewhere

In brief

Perplexity Max is worth $200 a month only if you need the four models Pro lacks or Model Council. Its 10,000 monthly Computer credits are worth $100 at Perplexity's own rate, and a Pro subscriber can buy the same credits, so Pro plus credits costs $120, as of October 2026.

What is the difference between Perplexity Pro and Max?

Perplexity Max costs ten times Pro and adds four models, Model Council, Brain, 10,000 Computer credits a month and higher limits that Perplexity doesn't put a number on. It's $200 a month or $2,000 a year, and Perplexity's Max page notes "the annual billing option is only available for the web app version." Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year. Here's the split, read from Perplexity's help center on 25 October 2026:

The $120 comes straight from Perplexity's credits page. It says "Today, 100 credits equals $1", so Max's 10,000 monthly credits are $100. The same page tells Pro subscribers they "can buy credits anytime on your Usage page." That makes the real price of everything else in Max $80 a month. Those $80 buy the four extra models, Model Council, Brain, higher limits and the "highest level of support, with dedicated infrastructure and faster response times."

Pro also keeps one thing Max doesn't get. Perplexity says "Paid Consumer Pro plans now include a weekly amount of Computer usage", and the same page says that included usage isn't available on Max or Enterprise plans. So if you're on Pro and you top up with credits, you get some Computer time on top of the $100 you paid for. On Max you don't.

Which models are only on Perplexity Max?

Four of the 11 Search models in Perplexity's model list are Max only: GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1. The list says "The list below is a snapshot as of October 17, 2026." Two of the four come cheaper from the labs that build them:

Max only modelMakerCheapest direct plan we foundPrice a month (US)
Claude Opus 5.5AnthropicClaude Pro, which lists Opus$20, or $17 billed annually
Gemini 4 ArgonGoogleGoogle AI Pro, "Access to Gemini 4 Argon"$19.99
GPT-6 AstraOpenAIChatGPT Pro, in Chatfrom $100
Claude Fable 5.1AnthropicClaude Max, Fable at "50% of weekly limits"from $100

We read each row at its source on 25 October 2026: Anthropic's Claude pricing, Google's US plans page and OpenAI's GPT-6 help article. OpenAI's article says "GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is available in ChatGPT for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business, and Enterprise plans." OpenAI also gives Plus Astra "in ChatGPT Work and Codex", not in Chat. Anthropic's table lists Fable on Claude Pro only as "Usage credits".

Here's the honest case for Max. Collecting all four in their makers' apps takes Claude Max (from $100, Opus and Fable), Google AI Pro ($19.99) and ChatGPT Pro (from $100). That's $219.99 a month, so Max is $19.99 cheaper if you truly want every flagship in one window. The catch is the allowance. Perplexity publishes no number for how many Opus or Astra answers Max includes, while Anthropic tells Claude Max buyers to "Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro."

Research works differently. The model list says that for Deep Research "Perplexity selects the models automatically", so Max's extra models don't give you a picker there. The Max page says only that "Research and Create files and apps also run on more powerful models."

Is Perplexity Max worth it for Perplexity Computer?

Max's 10,000 credits run about 10 to 28 multistep research reports a month, or 1 to 4 data dashboards. Perplexity's credits page prices a quick fact at 15 to 70 credits, a multistep research report at 350 to 950, a data dashboard at 2,400 to 9,800, and "Entire app or multi-day build" at 15,000 or more. We divided 10,000 by the top and the bottom of each range. If you ask it to build an app, that one job can use up more than a whole month of what Max gives you.

The credits also expire on a schedule. "Unused monthly credits do not roll over", and the 35,000 credit welcome bonus expires in about 30 days. That bonus is $350 of Computer in month one, which makes the first month look far better than month two. Bought credits last longer: they "expire if you don't use Computer for one year."

Two controls matter if you go heavy. Auto-refill buys more when your balance falls to 2,500 credits on Max or 500 on Pro, and it's "off by default". Max also caps total credit charges at $200 a month by default, and you can raise that to $5,000. So with auto-refill on, a heavy Computer month on Max can reach $400 at the default cap. Raise the cap and it can reach $5,200.

Who should pay for Perplexity Max?

Pay for Max if you use Model Council or the four extra models every working day and want them in one research tool. Model Council is "Available on the Max and Enterprise Max plans, on web", and no Pro top-up buys it. Perplexity's own pitch for Max is "a power-user who often does deep research on topics and wants to maximize the Create files and apps feature."

Skip Max if Computer is the reason. Stay on Pro, use its weekly included Computer time, and buy credits in the months you need them. At Perplexity's rate, Pro plus 10,000 bought credits is $80 under Max, so Max's included credits never justify its price on their own. Skip it too if one model is the reason. Claude Pro gives you Opus at $20 and Google AI Pro gives you Gemini 4 Argon at $19.99.

A multi-model plan is the third route. On Whizi, Pro at $29.99 a month carries Claude Opus, and Powerhouse at $49.99 adds GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable, with Perplexity's Sonar Pro for web answers. Credits per message vary by model and can change, so check the pricing page before you count on a number. Whizi loses to Max on Computer, Comet, Model Council and Brain, which it doesn't have. Powerhouse's first week is $4.99.

If you do buy Max, buy monthly. Perplexity's refunds page gives 24 hours after a monthly purchase and 72 hours after an annual one, outside the EU, UK, Turkey, South Korea and Brazil. It adds "No exceptions for requests after this period." At $2,000 a year, that's three days to change your mind.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Perplexity Max worth it over Pro?

Only for Model Council or the four extra models. Max's 10,000 Computer credits are worth $100, and Pro subscribers can buy the same credits, so Pro plus credits is $120 against $200. Is Perplexity Pro worth it runs the same test one tier down.

Does Perplexity Max have unlimited searches?

No. Perplexity's plan comparison lists Max with weekly and monthly limits for "advanced use" and doesn't publish a number for any of them. The Max page promises "high usage limits", not unlimited. Perplexity Pro limits explains how those pools reset.

Is Perplexity Max better than Claude Max?

Perplexity Max is better for cited web research across four labs' models, and Claude Max is better for heavy Claude use. Claude Max starts at $100 and sells a stated 5x or 20x Pro's usage, with Fable at 50% of weekly limits. Perplexity Max is $200 with no stated count. Is Claude Max worth it covers that side.

Can I get a refund on Perplexity Max?

Yes, inside the window: 24 hours after a monthly purchase or 72 hours after an annual one, or 14 days in the EU, UK and Turkey and 7 in South Korea and Brazil. Perplexity says "No exceptions for requests after this period." The path is the same as in how to cancel Perplexity Pro.
