Which AI app is best for writing? The one that lets you hear more than one voice
We rank these 10 apps on one test: can one app give you drafts of the same piece from two model families in side by side columns, each model blind to the other? Whizi passes it on its website. The other nine are ranked by how close they get, first by how many model families you can draft in, then by what the app gives a writer around the draft. The test matters because the two public writing leaderboards disagree about which family writes best, by up to 28 places.
We read both boards on 21 October 2026 and took the best model from each family. Arena's creative writing ranking, published on 20 October with style control, rates 415 models from blind votes. A person sees two answers to one prompt and picks the one they like. EQ-Bench Creative Writing v3 rates 140 models, and a Claude model picks the better of two stories. Its about page is frank about that: "We do not control for the judge possibly preferring its own outputs."
Claude is the only family in the top two on both. Gemini's gap needs two caveats. EQ-Bench hasn't scored Google's newest Gemini yet, so its 30th place belongs to an older Flash model. And Arena marks that newest Gemini's 2nd place as Preliminary, on 1,055 votes. No leaderboard can tell you which voice you'll edit least. Two drafts of your own piece can.
How do the 10 best AI apps for writing rank?
Whizi ranks first, Poe second and ChatGPT third. Claude is fourth on this test, though plenty of writers would rank it higher for the prose alone. Every pick below comes from the vendor's own pricing or help pages, its App Store listing, or the two leaderboards above, as of October 2026:
| Rank | App | Best for | Why it wins | Where it loses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Whizi | Testing voices before you pick one | Side by side model chats put Claude Opus next to GPT or Gemini on one prompt, in two columns that each keep their own hidden chat | Live only since 26 August 2026, with 3 US ratings; side by side runs on whizi.io, not yet in the iPhone or Android app; two columns at a time; side by side starts on Pro at $29.99 |
| 2 | Poe | Many model families for little money | Reaches Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and Mistral models from $4.99, and its /compare command reruns a prompt in other bots | Compared replies stack up in one chat, and Poe doesn't say whether a compared bot sees the first reply |
| 3 | ChatGPT | Most writers who want one family on one plan | Full screen writing blocks, 7 tone presets and 4 dials, images in the same chat, and unlimited everyday text chats on Free | One model family, and OpenAI's best model is 19th with Arena voters for creative writing |
| 4 | Claude | Prose that readers vote for | Arena voters rank Claude 1st, and Pro reads up to 1M tokens of your drafts in one chat | It makes no images, and its style presets are moving to skills |
| 5 | Google Gemini | Editing a draft in place | Arena voters rank Google's newest Gemini 2nd, and Canvas lets you edit the text directly | The best Gemini that EQ-Bench has scored is 30th |
| 6 | Meta AI | Free drafting from a strong model family | Meta's best model is 6th with Arena voters, and Meta says Meta AI stays free for everyday use | Free use has a daily limit, and Meta's best is 13th on EQ-Bench |
| 7 | Grok | Short fiction | xAI's best model is 8th on EQ-Bench's story test | 25th with Arena voters, and Premium costs $30 |
| 8 | Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft 365 subscribers | Copilot comes with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 | Microsoft picks the model, not you |
| 9 | DeepSeek | Drafting with no plan at all | Its App Store listing has nothing to buy inside the app | 45th with Arena voters and 55th on EQ-Bench |
| 10 | Vibe by Mistral (formerly Le Chat) | An assistant made in Europe | Vibe Pro at $14.99 gives up to 6x the messages of the free plan | Mistral's best model is 111th with Arena voters |
Many writers would put Claude above ChatGPT, and the voters back them. ChatGPT sits above it here for what surrounds the draft. OpenAI's release notes added full screen writing blocks for essays, reports and blog posts on 8 June 2026, and ChatGPT can make the image for a post in the same chat. Anthropic's help center says plainly: "Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do." For long manuscripts Claude wins outright. Its context window article lists 1M tokens on every paid plan, against 256K on ChatGPT Plus's reasoning models.
Poe is second because it gets closest to the test. It reaches Claude, GPT and Gemini on one account, and its Basic plan costs $4.99, the cheapest paid plan in our price table below. Poe's post on X from August 2025 describes its compare command: "After a response, just type /compare and @-mention any bot(s)." That reruns your prompt in the other bots, so you don't have to paste it again. No other rival here comes close.
Poe loses first place on one gap. The compared replies stack up in the same chat, not in side by side columns, and Poe doesn't document whether a compared bot can see the first reply, although its older multi bot chat, where you @-mention a second bot by name, plainly does share it. Poe's launch post says a bot can finish a task "using the context from all of the previous bots." For a voice test that matters, since a second draft that can read the first tends to copy its shape.
Whizi, which publishes this page, ranks itself first on a test it was built to pass, so weigh its losses too. It went live on 26 August 2026 and had 3 US ratings on 21 October, against 11,486,337 for ChatGPT. There's no iPad version, no widget and no Siri action. Files you attach in the app are capped at 10 MB each (the website takes 100 MB). The free tier is thin: text only, on Whizi AI and Auto, with 7 messages on day one and 3 a day after that. Side by side model chats need Pro or Powerhouse, and they run two models at a time, so a third voice takes a second send.
What does each AI writing app cost, and which model families does it reach?
Most of these apps cost about $20 a month, and only two let you choose between model families. The table uses US prices from each vendor's own pricing page or App Store listing, as of October 2026, and the Arena creative writing rank of the best model each plan can use:
| App | Paid plan, US price a month | Model families you can write with | Best Arena rank for creative writing | Same prompt in two models side by side |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whizi | Pro $29.99, or $19.99 billed yearly | Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Kimi and more | 1 (Claude Opus) | Yes on whizi.io (not yet in the phone apps), two columns, each blind to the other |
| Poe | $19.99 in the app, Basic $4.99 | Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, Mistral and more | 1 (Claude Opus) | /compare reruns it in one chat; not documented as blind |
| ChatGPT | Plus $20 | GPT | 19 | No |
| Claude | Pro $20, or $17 billed yearly | Claude | 1 | No |
| Google Gemini | Google AI Pro $19.99 | Gemini | 2 | No |
| Meta AI | Free; Meta One Premium $19.99 | Muse | 6 | No |
| Grok | Plus $8, Premium $30 | Grok | 25 | No |
| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99 | Picked by Microsoft | Not ranked | No |
| DeepSeek | Free, no paid plan in the app | DeepSeek | 45 | No |
| Vibe by Mistral | Pro $14.99 | Mistral | 111 | No |
Whizi's Pro plan carries 2,500 credits a month. A Claude Opus draft costs 20 of them, and a GPT draft on the newest Sol model or a Gemini Pro draft costs 10. So one Claude and GPT pair costs 30 credits, and Pro covers 83 of those pairs a month. Google's newest Gemini and the catalog's full 280+ models sit on Powerhouse at $49.99. The Whizi listing is on the App Store, and the Android app is on Google Play.
Two prices in the table deserve a second look. Claude Pro costs $200 a year paid up front, against $240 for twelve months of ChatGPT Plus, which OpenAI doesn't sell yearly. And Microsoft's plan page says Copilot runs on "AI models selected by Microsoft," so you can't pick a voice there at all.
How do you find the AI that writes in your voice?
Give two models the same real brief and keep the draft you'd edit least. Pick something you've already written and liked, such as a newsletter or a chapter opening. Paste it as a sample, then ask each model for the next piece in that voice. Read for edits, not polish. A longer draft or a confident tone tells you nothing.
Run the drafts blind to each other. If the second model can see the first draft, it copies its shape, and you learn less. In Whizi on the web, Compare in the chat header opens two columns, and each column keeps its own hidden conversation. Our side by side guide walks through it.
You can run the same test for free in three tabs. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all have free plans as of October 2026, and our free AI model comparison tool shows GPT and Claude answering the same sample prompts. Do it with your own piece twice, a week apart. The voice you keep picking is your answer.
Which AI app is best for writing for free?
ChatGPT is the best free AI app for writing. OpenAI's pricing page lists everyday text chats as "Unlimited*" on Free as of October 2026. Uploads, images, voice and deep research are the parts it limits. It had 11,486,337 US App Store ratings at 4.8 stars on 21 October 2026.
Two more cost nothing. DeepSeek's App Store listing has nothing to buy inside the app. Meta launched paid Meta One plans in September 2026, and its announcement says "Meta AI will still be free for everyday use." Whizi's free tier won't carry a writer: 7 messages on day one, then 3 a day.
Are there AI apps made only for writing?
Yes, and we left them out of the ranking on purpose. They wrap someone else's model in templates, so they can't tell you whose voice suits you. Four of them list these prices on their own pricing pages, read 21 October 2026:
| Tool | Made for | Entry price, US, a month | What the pricing page says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sudowrite | Fiction | $10 (Hobby and Student, 225,000 credits) | Its own Muse and Ballad models, "just for fiction", plus 30 more models |
| Rytr | Short copy and outreach | Free (10,000 characters), then Lite at $9 | Lite "removes the monthly character limit" |
| Jasper | Marketing teams | Pro at $69, or $59 billed yearly | Pro is for "content for multiple brands" |
| Writesonic | Search visibility | Starter at $79, billed yearly | The page now calls it an "AI Search Visibility Platform" |
Sudowrite fits a novelist who wants story tools around the draft, and Jasper fits a team writing for several brands. For emails, essays and posts, one of the chat apps above does more for the money. If you want picks beyond writing, our guide to the best AI to use covers coding, research and images too.
- Pick one piece you've already written and liked as the voice sample
- Send the same brief to two model families, each in its own chat
- Keep the draft you'd edit least, not the longest or most confident
- Repeat the test a week later before paying for a single vendor's plan
- Choose Claude Pro yearly at $200 if Claude wins and you write every week
