What is the best ChatGPT meal plan prompt?
The best meal plan prompt gives ChatGPT your limits first and your tastes second: people, dinners, minutes, budget, allergies, then what you like. Leave the limits out and you get seven generic dinners from seven different cuisines, with a grocery list to match. Fill the brackets and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini:
```
Plan [5] dinners for [2 adults and 2 children aged 7 and 10], [Monday to Friday].
Time: at most [30] minutes hands on per dinner. [Thursday] can use the [slow cooker].
Budget: about $[240] for the week's groceries at [store].
Allergies and hard limits: [none / peanuts / no pork]. Treat these as absolute, and name any ingredient in a recipe that could contain them.
Dislikes: [mushrooms, very spicy food].
Already in the kitchen: [rice, frozen peas, half a bag of spinach, 6 eggs].
Equipment: [oven, stovetop, air fryer].
Reuse: share at least [two] fresh ingredients across meals so nothing is half used.
Give me:
- A table: day, dinner, hands on minutes, and which leftover or shared ingredient it uses.
- One grocery list grouped by store section, with quantities, leaving out what I already have.
- An estimated total, labelled as an estimate, and the three items most likely to push it over budget.
No calorie counts unless I ask.
```
The reuse line is the one that saves money. Without it, a bunch of cilantro gets bought for one dinner and thrown out on Saturday. The last line keeps the model from adding nutrition numbers you didn't ask for, which the studies further down show it often gets wrong.
Then push back once: "Which of these dinners goes over 30 minutes if I've never made it before?" and "What did you assume I have that I didn't list?" The second question finds the stock cubes and spices it quietly put in your pantry.
How much should a weekly grocery budget be?
USDA prices a week of food at home for a family of four at $236.30 to $388.00 across its four food plans, as of September 2026. USDA publishes the cost of each plan every month per person, by age and sex. We added the people up into four households and applied USDA's own size adjustments, so you can put a real number in the budget line instead of a guess:
| Household, USDA September 2026 | Thrifty | Low cost | Moderate cost | Liberal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woman aged 20 to 50, living alone | $70.32 | $76.56 | $93.12 | $118.92 |
| Man aged 20 to 50, living alone | $88.32 | $87.96 | $110.28 | $134.76 |
| Couple aged 20 to 50 | $145.42 | $150.81 | $186.45 | $232.54 |
| Two adults aged 20 to 50, children 6 to 8 and 9 to 11 | $236.30 | $260.10 | $320.50 | $388.00 |
How we got there: USDA's Thrifty Food Plan report and its report on the other three plans, both issued in October 2026, give a weekly cost for each person in a four person home. USDA says to add 20% for a one person home and 10% for two. The family of four row is USDA's own reference family, so the $236.30 is printed in the report. Every other cell is our sum.
Two quirks are USDA's, not ours. USDA rebuilt the Thrifty plan in 2021, while the other three still use 2007 market baskets and the age band 19 to 50 instead of 20 to 50. That's how a man living alone comes out a few cents cheaper on Low cost than on Thrifty. And every plan assumes all meals and snacks are made at home, so a week with two takeaway nights needs less than the table says.
8 ChatGPT meal plan prompts for common weeks
Each prompt below is the master prompt with one line swapped. Add the line to the end of the master prompt, or replace the line it names.
- The tight budget week. "Budget: $[150] for the week. Build every dinner around rice, beans, eggs, frozen vegetables, oats or pasta, and use one fresh vegetable in at least three meals. Price each item from this list I copied from my store's app: [paste prices]."
- The use what's in the fridge week. "Before you add anything to the grocery list, use up these first: [list everything in the fridge, with rough amounts and use by dates]. Put the items that expire soonest in the first two dinners."
- The Sunday batch cook. "I cook once on [Sunday] for [2] hours. Plan two bases I can cook that day, like a tray of roasted vegetables and a pot of chili, and five dinners that use them in different ways. Give the Sunday steps in the order I should do them."
- The picky eater week. "One child eats only [plain pasta, chicken, cheese, carrots]. Make every dinner one the whole family shares, with a plain version of the main part set aside before the sauce goes on."
- The 20 minute week. "Every dinner is 20 minutes or less, start to finish, with no more than [8] ingredients and one pan or tray."
- The vegetarian week. "All dinners are vegetarian. At least three use beans, lentils, tofu or eggs as the main part. No meat substitutes that cost more than $[5] a pack."
- The leftovers into lunch week. "Make each dinner serve [6] so [2] portions become the next day's lunch. Mark which dinners freeze well."
- The grocery list only. "Here is my meal plan: [paste]. Write one grocery list grouped by store section, with quantities, combine duplicates, and leave out [pantry items I already have]."
Prompt 2 is the one that changes a grocery bill most, because it starts from what you'd otherwise throw away. Prompt 1 only works if you paste real prices. A chatbot without web search prices groceries from memory, and its memory stops at a training date.
One prompt isn't on this list on purpose: the weight loss or medical diet plan. ChatGPT will write one, and the next section shows why its calorie numbers aren't safe to diet on. For a diet tied to a health condition, take the plan to a registered dietitian or your doctor.
How accurate are AI meal plans on calories and allergies?
AI meal plans are usually sensible on food and unreliable on numbers. Two peer reviewed studies tested exactly this. In January 2025 the journal Nutrients published a comparison of weight loss diet plans from Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT, written for calorie targets from 1,400 to 1,800 kcal (Kaya Kaçar and colleagues). All three scored above 70 on a diet quality index. ChatGPT was the most precise on calories. Gemini was the least: "over 50% of its diet plans deviating from the target by more than 20%."
An earlier test found the same weak spot. In May 2023 two researchers at Poznań University of Economics and Business asked ChatGPT for 56 diets for people with food allergies (Niszczota and Rybicka, Nutrition). They found ChatGPT "generally accurate" but with "the potential to produce harmful diets." The more common errors were in portions and calories. That study tested ChatGPT as it was in early 2023, an old model now. The 2025 study found the same weak spot in newer chatbots, worst in Gemini.
Allergies need one check a chatbot can't do for you. The FDA lists nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame, which joined the list on 1 January 2023. Its food allergy page puts the job where it belongs: "People with food allergies should read labels and avoid the foods they are allergic to." A model can flag that pesto often has pine nuts. It can't read the jar in your cart.
How long do meal prep leftovers keep?
Cooked leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in the fridge, per the US government's cold food storage chart. Soups and stews get the same 3 to 4 days. In the freezer, the same chart gives cooked meat or poultry 2 to 6 months and soups 2 to 3 months.
That puts a hard edge on any batch cook plan. A Sunday cook that feeds you through Friday is past the 4 day line by Friday. Add this line to the prompt and the model plans around it:
"Anything cooked on [Sunday] is eaten by [Wednesday] or frozen the same day. Mark the dinners that come from the freezer and when to move them to the fridge to thaw."
Can ChatGPT make a meal plan with a grocery list?
Yes, ChatGPT makes a meal plan and a grocery list in one answer if you ask for both in the same prompt. Ask for the list grouped by store section with quantities and it does the combining for you. Without the word "quantities" you get "onions" instead of "3 onions", and you'll buy too many or too few.
Give the model your household rules once instead of every week. ChatGPT keeps them in memory or custom instructions; how ChatGPT memory works explains what it saves. Whizi, which publishes this page, does the same with projects: put the allergies, budget and dislikes in a project's instructions and every chat in that project starts with them, on free accounts too. Ask for "the grocery list as a spreadsheet" on Whizi's website and the answer comes with a real .xlsx to download, per creating Word and Excel files. It won't order the groceries.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT good at meal planning?
Yes, for the planning part. It's good at fitting dinners to your time, budget and fridge, and at turning them into one grocery list. It's weaker on numbers: a 2025 Nutrients study found over half of Gemini's diet plans missed their calorie target by more than 20%, though ChatGPT's were the most precise of the three it tested. AI for everyday tasks covers which other home jobs it handles well.
Can ChatGPT make a meal plan for weight loss?
It can write one, but its calorie numbers aren't reliable enough to diet on. In the 2025 Nutrients study, over half of Gemini's plans for 1,400 to 1,800 kcal missed the target by more than 20%, and a 2023 study of 56 ChatGPT diets found errors in portions and calories. For weight loss or a health condition, ask a registered dietitian.
Is there a free AI meal planner?
Yes. The free plans of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all write a weekly plan and a grocery list from the master prompt on this page. A dedicated meal planner app adds saved recipes and a list on your phone. Free ChatGPT alternatives compares what each free tier allows.
What should I put in a meal plan prompt?
Put who is eating, how many meals, minutes per meal, the grocery budget, allergies, dislikes, what's already in the kitchen and your equipment. Then ask for a table and one grocery list with quantities. For the budget, USDA's Thrifty Food Plan priced a couple aged 20 to 50 at about $145 a week in September 2026.
