Which Copilot are you actually paying for?
Five plans carry the Copilot name or Copilot features in October 2026. They don't share a price, a cancel screen or a refund rule. Match the amount first.
| Charge you see | US price, October 2026 | Status | Where to cancel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot Pro | $20 a month | Off sale (end announced 1 Oct 2025), support ended 1 Aug 2026 | account.microsoft.com/services, Manage, Cancel |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year | On sale, the Copilot Pro replacement | account.microsoft.com/services, Manage, Cancel |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year | On sale, Copilot added in Jan 2025 for $3 more | account.microsoft.com/services, Manage, Cancel |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 a month or $129.99 a year | On sale, Copilot for the owner only | account.microsoft.com/services, Manage, Cancel |
| GitHub Copilot Pro | $10 a month | On sale, a coding tool | github.com, Settings, Billing & licensing |
| Any of these bought in an app | Store price | Billed by Apple or Google | iPhone Settings or Google Play |
One number no vendor page spells out: a person who paid for Microsoft 365 Personal and Copilot Pro side by side paid $29.99 a month. Premium costs $19.99 and, in Microsoft's words, combines "everything in our Microsoft 365 Family and Copilot Pro subscriptions." That's $120 a year less for the same pair.
How do you cancel Copilot Pro on the Microsoft website?
You cancel Copilot Pro on the subscriptions page of the Microsoft account that bought it. Microsoft's own help page stresses that last part: "It's important to use that account."
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the paying account.
- Find Copilot Pro and select Manage.
- Select Cancel. On some plans the button reads Upgrade or Cancel.
- Follow the prompts. The cancel page tells you then and there whether a refund applies.
See Turn on recurring billing where Manage should be? You're already done. Microsoft says that link means the plan "is already set to expire on the date shown" and won't bill you again.
Microsoft's Copilot Pro page still reads: "Copilot Pro is no longer available for purchase; existing subscribers can continue using it until they cancel or support ends on August 1, 2026." It hasn't said in public what it did with plans nobody cancelled by that date. So trust your subscriptions page over the calendar. A renewal date next to Copilot Pro means a charge is coming. An end date means it isn't.
One local rule: if you bought in Germany, Microsoft lets you cancel without signing in at aka.ms/germancancel.
How do you cancel Copilot Pro bought on an iPhone or Android?
Apple or Google bills a plan you bought inside the Copilot app, and Microsoft can't cancel it for you. Its help page sends App Store and Google Play buyers to those stores for both the cancel and any refund.
On an iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, pick the Copilot plan and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple notes that a missing Cancel button, or an expiry message in red, means it's already cancelled.
On Android: open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Pick the Copilot plan and tap Cancel subscription.
Deleting the app stops nothing. The store keeps billing until you cancel there.
Can you get a refund on Copilot Pro?
Yes, if you cancel within 30 days of a payment. Microsoft's refund policy refunds your latest recurring charge when you cancel within 30 days after paying, and you can use that once per Microsoft account per product. A first purchase is refundable within 30 days, or before the first renewal if that comes sooner.
Past 30 days it depends on where you live, and Microsoft's own pages give three different country lists. Its cancel page names Canada, Israel, Korea and Turkey for a prorated refund on any plan length. It adds Denmark, Finland, Germany (bought after 1 March 2022), the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal for plans longer than a month that have renewed, so a monthly $20 Copilot Pro plan there gets nothing prorated. Its prorated refunds page puts Denmark in the any-length group instead, and adds France. The refund policy's plan tables name Microsoft 365, not Copilot Pro, but show how Microsoft treats the rest:
| Plan (Microsoft refund policy, read 11 October 2026) | In the 19 listed countries and regions | Everywhere else |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro | Prorated refund, cancel any time | Prorated refund only within 14 days of first purchase |
| Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal and Family | Prorated refund, cancel any time | No prorated refund |
The table's 19 are Canada, Denmark, France, Israel, Korea and Türkiye, plus Greenland, the Faroe Islands and 11 French overseas territories. The US and the UK aren't on any of the three lists.
Turning off recurring billing and cancelling aren't the same move. Turn billing off and you keep the plan to its end date, with no money back. Cancel inside a refund window and Microsoft may pay you back. Its page says access runs to the end of the period only "if no refund is issued," so a refund can end your access early. Apple and Google buyers ask the store instead. Our AI subscription refunds guide has the wording that works on each.
Is the Copilot in Microsoft 365 Personal the same as Copilot Pro?
No. It's the mix-up behind a lot of these searches. On 16 January 2025 Microsoft put Copilot into Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and raised the US price by $3 a month, its first rise since the plans launched. Personal is now $9.99 a month and Family $12.99. If your Personal or Family renewal came in $3 higher than the year before and you never once bought Copilot Pro, that rise is Copilot in Office, and cancelling Copilot Pro won't touch it.
Those plans come with a monthly allotment of AI credits, and in Family only the owner gets Copilot. Back then Microsoft pitched Copilot Pro at people who'd hit those limits.
Clearing the Enable Copilot box in Word, Excel or PowerPoint hides Copilot on that one device. It doesn't lower your bill. To drop the AI and the $3, start a cancel on the Microsoft 365 entry instead. Microsoft's switch page says the Cancel page lists plans with fewer features you can move to. Microsoft 365 Basic, at $1.99 a month for 100 GB, has no Copilot and no desktop apps. In January 2025 Microsoft also offered Personal Classic and Family Classic plans without Copilot "for a limited time."
Cancel Personal outright and your cloud storage drops to 5 GB. Over that, Microsoft says, OneDrive stops syncing new files and Outlook.com stops sending and receiving mail. After 12 months it may delete your OneDrive files. Download them first.
How do you cancel GitHub Copilot Pro?
GitHub Copilot Pro is a $10 a month coding plan. You cancel it in your GitHub settings.
- Click your profile picture, then Settings.
- In the Access part of the sidebar, click Billing & licensing, then Licensing. On the older layout it's Billing and licensing, then Plans and usage.
- In the GitHub Copilot section, open Manage subscription and click Cancel subscription.
- Choose Cancel Copilot Pro.
GitHub's docs say "You can cancel your Copilot plan at any time." You keep Pro until the billing cycle ends, then drop to Copilot Free. Two cases have no cancel button: verified students, teachers and open source maintainers on free access, and anyone covered by a company seat. A company seat cancels a personal Pro plan on its own.
What should you use after Copilot Pro?
Pick by where you used it. Office or chat? If Copilot did your work inside Word, Excel and Outlook, Microsoft 365 Premium is the swap Microsoft itself names. If you mostly chatted, the free Copilot app may be enough, and our Copilot vs ChatGPT comparison covers what it does well.
If you want more than one model family in one chat, Whizi Starter has ChatGPT Luna, Claude Haiku and Whizi AI for $15.99 a month. It doesn't run inside Word or Outlook and has no cloud storage. That's where Premium wins. The Copilot alternatives page sorts the other options by how you work.
- Match the amount on your statement to the right Copilot plan before you look for a button
- Sign in to account.microsoft.com/services with the account that bought the plan
- Cancel App Store and Google Play purchases in the store, not on the Microsoft site
- Cancel within 30 days of a charge if you want that charge refunded
- Download OneDrive files over 5 GB before cancelling Microsoft 365 Personal
Frequently asked questions
Does Copilot Pro still work after August 1, 2026?
Microsoft set August 1, 2026 as the end of support and hasn't published what happened to plans still active then. Your subscriptions page is the answer: an end date or a Turn on recurring billing link means no more charges.
Does cancelling Copilot Pro cancel Microsoft 365?
No. They're separate subscriptions with separate Manage buttons on the same page. Cancel Copilot Pro and your Microsoft 365 plan keeps renewing as before.
Can I remove Copilot from Microsoft 365 and pay less?
Yes, but only by changing plan. Start a cancel on the Microsoft 365 entry and pick a plan with fewer features, such as Basic at $1.99 a month. The Enable Copilot box in Word hides Copilot without changing the price.
Is Copilot Pro the same as GitHub Copilot Pro?
No. Microsoft Copilot Pro was a $20 consumer plan billed through your Microsoft account. GitHub Copilot Pro is a $10 coding plan you cancel in GitHub settings under Billing & licensing.
